The wingnuts were out in force yesterday denouncing that Washington Post/ABC News poll showing strong public support for the public option.

But as Keith Olbermann pointed out last night, there was a lot more data in the poll that should really have them clutching their pearls and fainting:

OLBERMANN: When anti-government protesters targeted President Obama and other Democratic leaders on April 15, the party took a hit. When town halls raged and the Tea Bag crowd hit Washington, the party staggered further. Now, the Tea Bag guys are on the move again. But in our third story tonight, signs that the party getting hurt by the anti-government Tea Bag people is the Republican party.

This week's "Washington Post"/ABC poll found 51 percent of Americans say that in next year's Congressional vote, faced with the generic Democrat versus the generic Republican, they'll vote for the Democrat; 39 percent will vote for the Republican. Only 19 percent have at least a good amount of confidence in Congressional Republicans to make the right decisions, far lower than Democrats or the president, for that matter.

And the number of Americans calling themselves Republicans has fallen to 20 percent -- 20, the lowest since 1983. A closer look shows that number has fallen from 25 percent just since mid-August. That's not a five percent loss for Republicans. Dropping from 25 percent to 20 percent is a loss of a fifth. Meaning since the height of town hall, Palin, Beck, death panel palooza, one out of five Republicans has stopped being Republican.

Republicans stopped at 25 percent back in March too, nine days after Tea Bag nations. Republicans were down to 21 percent. Naturally, Republicans are trying again. That's right, Tea Party Express II launches this weekend, coming to 38 cities, according to its press release, 37 on their website. Oh, well.

Previous Tea Parties so successful, they now have to hold them in such venues as Wichita's Lawrence Piedmont Stadium (ph) parking lot, Fallon (ph) Nevada's old Walmart's parking lot, a high school auditorium in Tri-Cities in Washington, Bozeman, Montana's Heritage Christian School gymnasium, and in Amarillo, Texas, John Stiff Memorial Park, picnic area number four. Seriously, picnic area number four. Don't interrupt the outing in area number three, please.

A dozen cities have no venue listed at all. According to the tour's Facebook page, "192 people are planning to attend these rallies."

In its own press release, a spokesman says about its new video, the web video promoting the tour, quote, "the tone of the ad is upbeat and positive." The name of the upbeat, positive ad is, "Countdown to Judgment Day."

And here's what upbeat and positive sounds like to these people.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you had enough of the out-of-control spending, bailouts, higher taxes, a spiraling national debt and big-government liberalism, then we invite you to join the Tea Party Express rally nearest you. We'll send a message to the politicians. Come election day, we're going to hand you a pink slip and take our country back.

Of course, it was simpler for Sean Hannity to just be in denial, since the poll made a liar out of him the day before when he tried to claim all the polls showed the public hated the public option. So he went on his show last night and said this:

Hannity: The business of this White House is division. And the White House's war against Fox News Channel is the latest evidence that it will throw its principles by the wayside to ensure that everybody falls in line with their agenda. And with the exception of Fox News, the other networks, they're receiving gold stars on their White House report cards.

And the latest case in point is the Washington Post/ABC News poll that shows that 57 percent of Americans support a government health-care takeover, and only 40 percent oppose it.

Now, a closer look at that poll explains why. Now, get this: They polled 13 percent more Democrats than Republicans! That explains a few things!

Of course, if Sean Hannity worked for a real news organization, he would likely know -- or have somebody around to explain to him before committing idiocies like this -- that polls use what they call "sampling" to get accurate results. In this case, they sampled more Democrats than Republicans for a very simple reason: The latest party-identification polling shows a 13-percent difference between Americans who call themselves Democrats and those who (shudderingly) admit to being Republican.

But then, Hannity doesn't work for a real news organization. So of course this kind of propagandistic crap is what we get polluting our teevees. Which, anymore, is the only thing the shrinking ranks of the rabid right have going for them still.

or may not label themselves as, but in what they believe in. And that has not changed a bit.

They may have PR issues, but make no mistake... all those conservatives who just found their "independent" streak recently, just in time to pass the buck, will no doubt vote republican when push comes to shove.

We're just witnessing what a lot of people knew for a long time knew: they are nothing but a bunch of chicken sh*ts.

They dug themselves into such a nice hole with the first servings of tea parties that they figured, why not just keep digging.

So now that the insane and somewhat pitiful tea bagger express crew have patched up the tires, put some bondo on the dents and tied the exhaust pipe back on with a wire, they are ready to roll that old sweetheart bus to an empty parking lot near you. Party on, Dudes!

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

All that matters is the media coverage. Will the media step up and call these events what they are...narrow minded single issue meetings by an out of touch minority slice of the public.

I think we have a tiny bit of the pot calling the kettle black here.

Obviously Fox doesn't have a "news" wing... They are blatant propagandists for the Neocons.

But I don't feel one can get any REAL news from MSNBC, CNBC, CNN either!

I have to dig deep into books and the internet to find out what is REALLY going on in the world!

I'm not hearing about the booming heroin trade out of Afghanistan from Rachel Maddow, are you? I'm not hearing anything about what's happening with investigations into the U.S. role in war crimes and torture from Keith Olbermann, are you? Where are the hard-hitting pieces against the Wall Street criminals that Wolf should be telling us?

If I'm lucky I'll get an occasional good piece of news reporting from PBS...like "The Warning".

If I want real news stories I need to read Glenn Greenwald, or Chris Hedges or go to the BBC or Al Jezeera for Chrissakes!

And when is the last time you heard ANYONE on MSNBC, CNBC or CNN criticize Israel? What do you hear from them regarding war crimes investigations concerning Israel's bombing in Gaza?

You get my drift....

So when you mention that there is no news coming out of FoxNews....be honest, okay? There's not much news coming out of any other major media outlets in this country either.

Most of what K.O. does is damage control with Fox... If I want to know what Beck or O'Reilly or Hannity or Limbaugh are up to all I need to do is watch "Countdown"!!!

Once the Republican party finishes eating itself maybe we can have a real 3rd party...or I guess that would be a 2nd party, but really we need 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc, etc, parties for this thing to really be representative of, by and for the people.

Maybe the dems can be a new commonsense conservative party (they act right wing enough of the time anyway. And we can finally get some really liberal parties in the mix. Maybe even a democratic socialist party.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

oh really's picture

...but I don't know anyone who is getting happier with Democrats as time passes. Both parties are horribly broken. The Democratic Party could be fixed with new and better elected officials, which would probably also require better voters...fat chance of that. The Republican Party is beyond hope. They need an entirely new philosophy AND all new candidates AND all new voters. In other words, a new party bottom to top.

In short, don't bet on the USA.

Mike in Milwaukee's picture

This could be indicative that a fifth of them are batshit crazy and headed for an even more right wing group.

ahaque's picture

It is not surprising that only 20% Americans want to identify themselves with the Republican Party. The party is out of touch and with the American public. Unfortunately, it has reduced itself to an extreme right wing party, anti Blacks, anti Latino and anti any reasonable thinking person. This is a shame because a fair democratic system requires at least two strong parties.

Polls show that 65% Americans are in favor of a Public Health care option. Republicans have gone hoarse screaming socialized medicine. It is now obvious that the angry town hall protesters against Health care reform were a put up job financed by insurance companies and supported by Republicans. It didn't work, did it, if 65% still prefer a public option.

In Canada, health care is totally public. Every man, woman and child is covered by provincial (state) government health care insurance plans. All expenses whether a GP or a specialist consultation, surgery, hospitalization is 100% covered. No co-pay, no deductibles and no extra cost to public. We do not pay separate insurance premiums as health care is covered through our taxes. Regardless of John McCain's ignorant rants about Canada's health care system, we probably have the best health care system in the world. At no time do any Government official have to approve any treatment, the Doctors make these decisions that they consider best for their patients. And yet Canada spends only 10% of its GDP on Health care compared to 16% in the US.

With 47 million uninsured, with patients having to get prior treatment approvals from insurance companies and insured paying part of major medical costs, it is quite obvious that a major chunk of that 16% is going to fill the coffers of insurance companies.

It is time the US had a public health care option to offer some real competition to insurance companies.

Heh...Reagan's mantra turned upside down. The worst thing a person needs to hear..."I'm a Republican, and I'm here to help."

"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."

El.Kabong's picture

uh, sean,

Assuming a standard distribution of self identifying Republicans, for every 100 surveyed there are:

20 Republicans (20% self identify as republican)
22 or 23 Democrats (13% more dems than republicans)
57 or 58 'others'

Now, please, someone explain how those 2 or 3 dems explain a 57% to 40% advantage.

Bainbridge22's picture

That 13% is percentage points, not %people. The Dem number is 33%. See the poll article, last section.

teddy's picture

It does ignore the rather more obvious question of why Sean thinks equal numbers of self-described republicans and democrats should be polled...

But even in the worst case scenario where everyone tows the party line, then the independents, who according to the numbers make up the majority of those polled, are still greatly in favor of the govt plan.

It's cute that Sean can't do math.

It's even cuter that he assumes his audience can't either.

This is the 'Grand Old Party'...'The Party of Lincoln'...they have been around for well over a century! These people are not clueless by any stretch of the imagination. Yet they continue this self-destructive behavior like they are WANT to commit political suicide. This has been puzzlement for a very long time and I gotta say it's makes me wonder wtf they're up to because you can't trust these people. It makes me all the more suspicious of them. Maybe they believe the world will really and truly end in 2012 and it doesn't matter anymore???

Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime

Blue Lensman's picture

They a) assume Obama will fail and therefore, b) many many voters will be disenchanted with him and all dems, so c) as long as they were screaming an opposing viewpoint (continually), they'll be in position to say, "we told you so, now come back home to the GOP so we can take care of you the right way". In other words, for the party of "No" it's all politics, all of the time.

Andy K's picture

...the GOP used to be more liberal. Not liberal in the sense that the word is used now- as a position on the left/right, two dimensional political spectrum- but in the sense that they used to be able to roll with the punches. The GOP had a bigger tent, and didn't define themselves using concrete ideologies.

That all changed in the '70s, when they embraced Nixon's Southern Strategy, and shortly after that the Moral Majority social conservatives. They entrenched. Now they're getting buried. *sounds of world's smallest violin playing a sad tune*

Hieronymus Braintree's picture

As a general rule, political parties grow smaller not because their enemies outfox them but because they go insane. The Republicans are in melt-down mode and nothing will stop them until their sutuation has become so continually disatrous that enough of them finally realize that things just aren't working and need to change.

This happened to our side. I remember the days of PC when, the liberal/left faithful was having itself a nice little war on middle America and straight white males. Feminists were looking for any reason to act victimized including an entirely fictional Satanic International conpiracy in which they were bizzarely allied with Fundamentalist Christians. (If you don't believe me, google satanic ritual abuse and january 1993 Ms. magazine to get a taste.)Then there was the Tawana Brawley hoax where anyone who expressed proper skepticism was accused of being a racist who secretly supported her supposed assailants. Andrea Dworkin was stereotyping men as sexual preditors to the cheers of her fellow feminists. When working stiffs who previously supported the party accellerated their already alarming abandoment, liberals denounced them for being stupid. (I also remember my fellow liberals mocking this new radio guy, Rush Limbaugh as some go-nowhere ass****. Boy, were they right.)

The Republicans are worse then the Democrats. Democrats merely humored these banana heads. They didn't openly encourage them. Therefore, the ongoing disaster for the Republicans should last a good deal longer and be considerably more damaging. I encourage everyone to enjoy the spectacle. Just don't think you're really quite all that different.

StillSickOfIt's picture

I'm not going to attack any party here, just analyze the progression of political ideas over the last 20 years.

We start in a soup of Republican positivism in 1989. Rebounding from the 3 trillion dollars Reagan spent, the American people are gravitating towards G.B. I. There is no reason for this other than Ronald Reagan has just spent 20 times more money in 8 years than FDR did in 16. This has liberated the markets and fueled a new industrial defense complex that will rival the rest of the world combined.

G.W. I wins because he is VP to Reagan, despite all the laws he broke and people he had killed. This milk toast republican tries to create an endless war with Iraq, but doesn't have the neo-con guts to follow through. As a country we should be grateful he had twice the IQ of his son.

Clinton then completely revamps the government. Stream lining it into a money making machine. Everything a repig would espouse, but never create in fear of not paying off the 1% of the best contributers.

GW II then buys/steals an election twice. America sits idly by while democracy is thrown under the bus, then the constitution, then the Geneva Convention. We then become a rouge state, too powerful to fail.

No surprise in 2008 the Dem wins. The country is sick of neo-con sluts. But the Dems can smell money at the door and aren't willing to make the real shift they have been selling.

Health care gets sold under the table. Don't ask don't tell is shelved for future administrations. Real tax reform and corporate policing is completely forgotten.

We now live in a country where the Dems are the right wing "sane" party and the repigs are a party looking for a rubber room. Where do the people get a say? When did democracy get bought and paid for? Where did the bait and switch happen? Somewhere in the last 8 years the greedy fuckers switched places with the insane greedy fuckers and started supporting the party of change. The only people who are winning are part of the greedy fucker party.

The "change" is not a change at all, but a subtle lessening of abuse.

"Yes we can" had turned into "well, maybe we could if we had spine".

This is BS. I'm not sure why any of you don't see that you have been sold a bill of goods. There is no hope. There are no dream of the future; unless your dreams are to lose your job and health care to live under a bridge and watch your children die of easily treatable diseases.
