Alan Colmes leaving "Hannity & Colmes"

Now who will Sean Hannity walk all over?!
FOX News Channel's (FNC) Alan Colmes will relinquish his role as co-host of Hannity & Colmes at the end of the year.
In announcing his decision, Colmes said, "I approached Bill Shine (FNC's Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years."
Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com's The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program.
In all seriousness, this is a sad development. Alan Colmes is a good guy, even if he did get overshadowed by the boorish Hannity, and was one of the only effective liberal voices in all of FOXland. Like Nicole, I never watched too much H&C due to blood pressure issues, but the show will be much worse off without him. Best of luck, Alan.

Have you ever listened to this guy on the radio? He sounds fantastic when Hannity is nowhere to be heard. He really has alot of talent for brokering a discussion, and if he gets another show, and invites a good cross section of liberals and conservatives on at the same time, you could have some really good stuff. Just keep the clowns from FUX away.

I've only seen him in clips, and read a few interview transcripts. He seems bright and talented, but there is a price to pay for selling out and he has paid it.

Alan was a tool. His only job was to put up weak arguments in order to be shot down.

Actually, he didnt play that role, it's just the show execs. and the constant shrieking of Insanity made it seem that way, especially to the casual observer.
I couldnt stand Hannity and rarely could stomach more than 5 minutes of this program but Colmes was much more than a liberal doormat, even if seems to some he was.
playing part of the H&C 'double-act' does not make Colmes a tool. Fox News were never going to allow him the leeway he required to be on top of the right-wing argument. As long as he sat beside the lantern-jawed knucklehead, he was going to suffer. Sometimes you have to do that to 'put food on your family'.
Having heard some of Colmes' independent stuff, he is an eloquent & educated man. I wish him luck on his future ventures.
I remember before H&C, Colmes was the liberal counterpoint to Pat Buchanan on his radio show and was frequently an effective foil. I know a lot of liberals dislike Colmes simply for being the liberal window treatment for Fox's unconvincing claims of "Fair and Balanced" and consorting with the enemy as it were. The network's format typically worked against him, but I've observed that his constant debate with the neanderthal right has made him a more effective spokesman for the left than many liberal talking heads.

I hardly ever watched H&C because Hannity is such a caustic ass, and he causes my blood pressure to rise. Alan may be very knowledgeable, but he was no liberal equivalent to Hannity's right wing crap. He let Hannity stomp all over him.
I'm glad he has left and am happy for him.....I only hope this hurts Hannity because he is truly an ass.
If Hannity chooses to keep his show and pick a replacement for Alan, I would recommend Bob Beckel. At least Bob's got the balls to fight Hannity.....and I think he truly despises the guy.

hannity had the gall to say that colmes was a good debate partner - as if hannity would know anything about debating. I suspect hannity will be less effective as a stand alone, without a stage prop liberal to give an air of legitimacy to his arguments.

I listen to Colmes on the radio at night while I'm dropping off to dreamland and I really enjoy him. He is smart. Since he is on a Fox Talk radio program he gets a lot of right wing idiots and I mean real stupid people, and he puts them down so well they don't even realize it. I'm sorry but I like Alan Colmes' Radio show. I could never watch enough of Hannity & Colmes to have any opinion of him there but I sure got an opinion of Hannity. He is less than a disgusting turd.

I've always considered Alan as an actor, getting paid to act the part in which he was cast, on H&C. Too bad Clannity doesn't see himself as one.

AC was never a "liberal balance" to Hannity - he was neither very liberal or an effective "balance." His job was to perpetuate the stereotype of the weak, wimpy, vaguely effeminate (is he gay? French maybe?) liberal to accentuate the "manly man" that is Sean Hannity.
I never heard the radio show other commenters have mentioned, but I don't doubt he did fine. He did have his rare moments on FOX, but any motivated liberal with half a brain could have seriously embarrassed Hannity on many occasions. Colmes never really did.

Hannity has Sarah Palin signed before the end of the year. The two of them can palpitate all over each other... and their loyal listeners can masterbate to the sounds of their palpitations. Then they will all "let not their hearts be troubled" in knowing that their "conservatism in exile" is safe and sound during the eons of future liberalism through which they must suffer through.
Sean Hannity is nothing more than a SELF-INFLICTED WOUND on the Republican Party. I HOPE he gets Palin. They deserve each other.

Alan did rationalize this to (I think even, John Amato) that if he wasn't Hanity's counterpart, who else would be? Kristen Powers? Seriously, Alan did actually did stifle some people like Karl Rove and Gangrich - in other words he had his moments. But, remember this is Fox Noise, it's an alternate universe where it's okay to fuck up the people for the benefit of the Republican party. Alan did truly bring some balance to the the fake 'Fair and Balance' meme that Fox constantely tries to shove down our throats.......

I never found Colmes to be effective on that show because he was always so out numbered and when he had a chance to bring in some kind
of liberal point of view, he was really, really bad at it.

If they really wanted to be "fair and balanced," they'd pair up Hannity with someone who could make him squeal like a pig, like Chuck D or Ed Shultz. Let's have him go head-to-head with a veteran.

You know, I think Colmes was ok. He worked in very inhospitable conditions-(HnC always seemed to be stacked against anything remotely progressive/liberal), even when there was supposed to be someone functioning as a liberal spokesperson, etc, Hannity made sure to have a frothing rightie also on the bill-so Colmes would do his best to defend the progressive viewpoint even when it was often 3 against 2-amid interruptions and shouting over him, he tried.
He's probably getting tired of the crap. I couldn't do what he has done night after night-without strangling Hannity!

Alan Colmes failed for years to stand up to Sean Hannity's lies and bullshit. Fighting back that Nazi bullshitter Hannity would have made Colmes a liberal hero, but he failed to successfully convey the progressive message. Rebuking Hannity's lies should have been as easy as fishing with dynamite.
Colmes succeeded in what he did, which was to make liberals look useless. Am I the only one who noticed how he would choke in the middle of a question and stop any further follow-through of any number of guests? It is so obvious he was being told to stop.

If anyone actually believes Hannity won't get ratings on his own they're either stupid or ignorant. Hannity's radio show commands over 13 million listeners weekly, he's number two on the charts to Rush,and Colmes isn't even on the list for his talk radio show. Hannity was the only reason people watched H&C. Whats with this elite liberal media site where everyone rips republicans,and whats the matter with all you liberals anyway, you have the house, the senate and the white house can't you guys stop complaining arleady??
