McCain key foreign policy advisor and former Secretary of State Larry Eagleburger appeared on NPR yesterday and offered this surprising little bit of straight talk about Sarah Palin.

NPR: "Are you entirely comfortable with Sarah Palin as the Vice President of the United States? That she would be ready to take over in a crisis if she should, e called up to do so."

Eagleburger: "That's a very good question. I'm being facetious here. Look, I don't.. Of course not. I don't think at the moment she's prepared to take over the reigns of the presidency."

You gotta applaud the guy for at least being honest. That's some pretty devastating stuff.

When did the Republicans lose sight of the old adage: honesty is the best policy? Glad to see some of them are making up for their past mistakes.

... that St. Raygun's former chief of staff, Ken Duberstein, has endorsed Obama.

Love it!

let's see who gets pushed under the train first..McCain or Palin.

you grind up the national symbolic animal?

I do not recall him raising a similar objection to the Chimp, who was by any account no better qualified than the Sarah-cooter to govern the Country.

I'm not saying she IS or would be qualified, in any but the absolute, literal Constitutional sense.

But after GWB, the argument of competence seems curiously moot...

...sounds tasty!! LOL

But,seriously, why would a guy who worked for Kissinger and GHWB badmouth Junior???

Oh yeah, Eagleburger ran his mouth off. Then they "re-educated" him and put him back on Fox to apologize for telling the truth. Poor bastard.

Nobody is - but of course some are loathe to admit it. Country First - of course!

Eagleburger tried to take it back today. He's more like hamburger:

That's not the sound of the nail going into the coffin, it's the sound of footsteps walking away from the grave.

unless she actually decides to understand and follow it.

"ABC News' Steven Portnoy reports: In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama."

She is ignorant to the point of being dangerous. She's also a great fundraiser for Obama - just sent another $25.

Wow... really? She said that about the 1st amendment?

Wow... just wow...

Good on you for sending in the $25. I'm hoping to do some telephoning between now and Tuesday night. (If you're reading this, and have something to do with Darcy Burner's campaign, email me.)

At times like these, I wish that I was the one asking the questions. For example, "What about Mary Ellen Emmons' first amendment rights?"

UPDATE: Secretary Eagleburger appeared on Fox News today to recant his statements from yesterday when he said “of course” Palin’s not ready to be Vice President. “I made a serious mistake yesterday,” he said. “I wasn’t thinking when I said it. … I was just plain stupid, and if I have given the flim flam artist Barack Obama some success with this, I am deeply apologetic. I did not intend it.” Watch it:

it is always someone's fault...

I guess Obama did force him at gunpoint to say that. Eh?

Funny, how making a truthful statement is viewed by conservatives as "making a serious mistake."

I'm posing this to myself as well as to everyone else:

If Obama had picked a complete twit for his VeeP, someone so obviously unqualified, but McCain had picked someone unquestionably qualified, how would it affect our votes?

I'm just wondering. I want to say that I would have the intellectual honesty to vote at least for a third party candidate. I think I would. But I'm wondering whether my fear of a McCain Administration might give me pause.

Regardless of who either candidate picked as running mates, McCain's presidency would have been a third Bush term.

dumbstruck:

Regardless of who either candidate picked as running mates, McCain's presidency would have been a third Bush term.

Interesting. If that's the case, then you can't (at least not consistently) condemn those who would vote for McCain despite their admission that Sarah Palin is dangerously unqualified if they honestly despise everything Obama stands for.

I dunno. It would seem to weaken the argument that people should withhold their vote for McCain just because he picked a dangerous nitwit for VeeP.

Do you think anyone is actually voting for McCain...or are they just voting party lines?

I really don't see what McCain as an individual has to offer. He's like GWB, he's a pawn of his party.

There is no one on the face of the planet that McCain could have picked that would possibly make me vote for him - except possibly me.

Rangerk8:

That wasn't the question.

Imagine having Sarah Palin as president during the Cuban Missile Crisis. That wink ain't gonna stop those submarines from bringing in the nukes sweetheart.

Arnie, the Soviets coerced Castro to let them install nuclear missiles in Cuba BECAUSE THE UNITED STATES HAS STRONG-ARMED TURKEY INTO ALLOWING THE US MILITARY TO INSTALL ICBMs on Turkish soil aimed at key Soviet cities and industrial centres MONTHS PREVIOUSLY. In plain English, the Soviets were reacting to a nuclear threat by the US to their sovereign nation. The Kennedy's were war-mongers and the Soviets were acting in self-defense. Read some Bertrand Russell on what happened. He wanted to nominate Krushchev for the Nobel Peace Prize because Kruschev agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba. Ain't reality a bitch?? And fuck the US pop culture/propoganda system for turning history on its head.

The russians are PISSED that the US (mostly) is trying to hem russia around with NATO members whose claims to North Atlantic connections are risible at best.

The russians are saying: fuck around in Georgia, or Azerbajan, or the Ukraine, and look what it gets ya: Another Castro, only this one's got about 20 percent of all the oil YOU use...

but you don't have to tell me anything about reality being a bitch. I know about 9/11, gulf of tonkin, pearl harbor, the fed, etc and so forth. I just haven't come across (or looked into further) much about the cuban missile crisis. Thanks for educating me. Just try not to be such a dick next time. Now back to the topic....Can you imagine Sarah Palin in a cuban missile type situation if it had played out like they told us it played out? Better?

serious question. If the Kennedy's were war-mongers it certainly wouldn't be anyone from the military industrail complex.

"You gotta applaud the guy for at least being honest". Hmm . . if it took this dinosaur this long to figure out what was patently obvious to an intelligent 9 year-old, then OK. Otherwise, he's just a senile old dolt who has experienced a fleeting moment of lucidity.

Said he was 'annoyed' by the 'gotcha journalism' and that his 'first amendment rights were destroyed'

Let's not forget here - this is the presidency of the united states we're speaking about and not some game show hostess spot, folks!

Your damn right this woman is not qualified or prepared for this job. In fact, she is THE least qualified and prepared vice presidential candidate EVER in the history of this country.

It shows us one thing: JOHN MC CAIN CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO HAVE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS WORKING FOR HIM.

It's also not Palin's fault that she's unqualified and a total "puppet" without any first-hand knowledge of anyting to do with this country....she was overly excited to jump in which points out her delusional behavior.

But the main criticism goes to John McCain totally in selecting someone so pathetically unqualified as a running mate.

McCain cannot be trusted on any issue after what we've seen with his Palin pick.

Mark my words: We will see a new phenomenon in this election and it will be forever called THE PALIN EFFECT. For the very first time in our history, the bottom of the ticket tanked the top! We'll hand her that - she'll be known through history as the moron who toppled McCain's chances for the presidency.

This is unbelievable. McCain himself has publicly acknowledged that he may lose his home state of Arizona.

Talk about defending one's home turf?

When this is all over, some will say Bush was the problem. Some will blame the economic meltdown.

But the truth is McCain has run a horrible, inept, clusterf*ck of a campaign and deserves to lose.

Why are we surprised he managed to run his campaign that way?

Is like those people who are now shocked, shocked I tell you when a life long failure (Boosh) turned out to be such a horrible president.

Bush was the biggest part of the problem and the rubberstamp congress and senate shared a large part. The media carries the rest of the responsibility because of their complcity in allowing the corporations to take over our government.

fa·ce·tious adj. — Playfully jocular; humorous: facetious remarks.

So, he tells the truth by stating in advance that he's only kidding.

Or maybe not. I can't really tell what he means with that interjection, "I'm being facetious here."

This is amazing! Remember Reagan's creed? "Thou shall not speak ill of any Republican." I guess they tossed that out the friggin window!

I remember Bush the 1st and him hating each other, and they went at it during the 80 primaries. Heck, wasn't the kid who shot Raygun the son of a close family friend of Bush?

This is just a controlled slip, I am sure they are trying to put Palin on notice. Since she is clearly using this campaign to cement a "real" run in 2012 (by real for Palin, she means her as the presidential nominee).

There is no honor among thieves, remember that.

... the woefully incurious and ignorant Caribou Barbie has every right to spout inanities, mistruths, lies and other garbage ...

... and the media have every right to criticize, question and call her on all of it. Sorry, Moosegirl, that's how it goes.

She's dangerously stupid. A clear and present threat to representative democracy.

The Taliban in high heels, a low-cut dress and lipstick.

He had none to start with, despite the (more or less successful) efforts of the SCUM to manufacture them for him, retroactively.

No one who could countenance George Fucking W Bush as dog-catcher has got any business stipulating to the qualifications of ANYone else...

"take over the reins" of the presidency, not the "reigns". "Reigns" doesn't even make sense. "Reins" control horses. Control is what "reins" means. "Reigns" is the plural of the term of a king. "Take over the 'reigns'" is nonsense. I'm not usually a usage paign in the neck, but this one is driving me nuts and you are the worst offender. STOPPIT.

Of course, now he's apologizing for telling the truth (something Republicans would seldom have to do even if they did apologize).

What could Larry do? He's stupid enough to endorse McCain, why shouldn't he go along with Palin?

What's really hilarious is that Eagleberger is one of the 5 chowderhead Secretaries of State McCain claimed were endorsing him that he had difficulty rememembering!

McCain not only has shot himself in the foot, but even his supporters are making his foot look like Swiss cheese. This is truly the campaign that can't shoot straight, even in a circular firing squad pattern....
