Administration Assures Abortion Rights Backers on Sotomayor
By Susie Madrak Friday May 29, 2009 1:00pmAnd of course, now the Republicans will accuse Obama of imposing a litmus test, since anything he does is evil:
The White House scrambled yesterday to assuage worries from liberal groups about Judge Sonia Sotomayor's scant record on abortion rights, delivering strong but vague assurances that the Supreme Court nominee agrees with President Obama's belief in constitutional protections for a woman's right to the procedure.
Facing concerns about the issue from supporters rather than detractors, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama did not ask Sotomayor specifically about abortion rights during their interview. But Gibbs indicated that the White House is nonetheless sure she agrees with the constitutional underpinnings of Roe v. Wade, which 36 years ago provided abortion rights nationwide.
"In their discussions, they talked about the theory of constitutional interpretation, generally, including her views on unenumerated rights in the Constitution and the theory of settled law," Gibbs said. "He left very comfortable with her interpretation of the Constitution being similar to that of his."

Social conservative rage is like candy to me
"Social conservative rage is like candy to me"
Its delicious.
Good point though, let me clarify: Impotent social conservative rage is like candy to me. I can't get enough of that.
I find their wailing and gnashing of teeth as pleasurable to the ear as the works of Nobuo Uematsu.
It's not like the repugs would want to restrict the ability of Sotomayor to make a decision based on her own experience, knowledge and beliefs!
The republicans still control the supreme court...
And you can no longer believe what Obama or his administration's personal say..
Have you been paying any attention to Obama back tracking on his promises..
I personally am pi... off with the continue of the war in Iraq... his endorsement of Bush's illegal spying ... back tracking on one of the main issues of getting American jobs back in this country RENEGOTIATING THE FREE TRADE BILL... Not obeying his constitutional duties by interfering in the prosecution of Bush , Cheney and others involved in the war crimes and other crimes to our citizens and country for the past 8 years..
Where is the difference between Obama's refusal to uphold our laws and Pelosi for the last 2 plus years saying impeachment of Bush and Cheney were off the table??
Obama to me is now talking with a fork tongue , he is saying one thing yet he does the opposite..
I see Obama and his administration as a continuation of Bush/Cheney's administration..
If Bush or Cheney were in office taking the actions Obama is , we would be still yelling Impeachment..
I'll happily provide an anonymous quote to anyone who wants one that Newt Gingrich sleeps with farm animals. Politico.com can put it in one of their "articles". That makes it a legitimate topic of discussion in Washington DC. And soon we'll have Newt Gingrich on "Meet the Press", being asked why it IS that he sleeps with farm animals.
I mean, that'd only be fair, right, "liberal media"? Your opponents get to start baseless rumors that you then recycle into coverage?
How about something really dicey - like Mr. Family Values had an affair and made his wife sign divorce papers while she was just recovering from cancer surgery.
Naaah, that shit is way over the top. Nobody would believe that.
I wish there would never be another abortion, ever.
But even if this country was knee deep in contraceptives, women
must have the right to choose. And A fat, drunk, old, white,
hypocritical, adulterous, impotent, disgraced former congressman has no
business talking about the issue. None. Ever.
Hi all, I know this is way off topic, but I saw this ad on the right side of this webpage and it seems you can go to freedomworks.org and show your support for "socialized medicine" I already went there, and highly recommend it. If you can spare a couple of minutes.
http://www.freedomworks.org/stop-tax-increase...
I've been visiting and posting at Crooks and liars for over 5 years, and from one post you call me a troll?
What other comment of mine would make you think that?
I clicked on a google ad on the side of this page, it took me to a site where they're asking if you support "socialized medicine", I posted a reply saying that I don't mind the taxes if they're used to fix the health care system.
Since this site allows anyone to post, not just 'registered members' I invited everyone here to visit, that's all.
If you don't feel like going that's cool too.
But troll? seriously? That's pretty childish.
I'd impose my own litmus test. Keeping religion out of government.
Obama is NOT strong on state church separation issues, nor (and only as far as the few rulings have indicated) is Sotomayor. This is bad...granted it would have been worse with another republican president. Still, I am not happy. Remember one more relgionist on SCOTUS and we'll see a reversal of the past 60 years of progress regarding church separation issues.
pro-life side to state what the penalty should be for taking the morning after pill. Death penalty? Life? $100 fine?
And, if a pregnant woman is caught with a morning after pill, should the state commit her to a secure facility for baby production and then execute her after delivery? Or some lesser penalty?
getting our periods. Women lose potential lives every day that way.
I have a copy of The Handmaid's Tale staring back at me from my bookshelf right now. I think I should finally read it...
Will never be overturned. Never never never never never never never.
I wouldna thought a president could kidnap foreign nationals, hold them for years while torturing them for evidence to back up the lies they used to start an illegal war that was their response to the largest terrorist attack on American soil that they dropped the ball in preventing, then used the whole mess to argue they kept America safe, and basically admit all that with the end result being the media and all law enforcement agencies getting bogged down in the argument over whether torture was effective or not.
feel comfortable saying that with certainty. I feel that it's still necesary to be vigilant about rights of choice.
Absolutely...if the last 15 years tell us anything it's that
The Money Power Party and it's two factions the Democrats and
Republicans will do anything to marginalize the rights of
working men and women no matter where they live
Conservative radio host says he hopes Sotomayor menstruation doesn't affect judgment
http://rawstory.com/blog/2009/05/conservative...
This may be TMI but I'm already nauseated from my moontime, but to hear this garbage from the Republicans' favorite domestic terrorist just makes me feel even sicker.
Keep at it you classless shitheads in the GOP!
that judges don't necessarily support the positions of the presidents who nominate them. See Souter, David. Judge Sotomayer generally does seem to follow precedent closely, but I doubt we can predict her leanings. I'm hopeful, though.
This should make the conservatives happy. They don't want activist judges who overturn legal decisions. Sotomayor's desire to maintain Roe V. Wade means she isn't an activist judge. But I'm being sarcastic, I don't actually expect conservatives to be honest.
How very sad and disturbing that so many of us still do not understand that it is never okay to intentionally kill an innocent human being. Any college textbook in embryology makes clear that life begins at conception. At 3 weeks post-conception, an unborn child has a beating heart. At 6 weeks she has measurable brain waves. Most all abortions occur after one or both of these milestones because the woman doesn't even know she's pregnant yet.
"From the moment a baby is conceived, it bears the indelible stamp of a separate distinct personality, an individual different from all other individuals." Ultrasound pioneer, Sir William Liley, M.D. 1967
"After fertilization has taken place a new human being has come into existence. This is no longer a matter of taste or opinion. Each individual has a very neat beginning, at conception." Dr. Jerome Lejeune, genetics professor at the University of Descartes, Paris. He discovered the Down syndrome chromosome.
"It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception." Professor M. Matthews-Roth, Harvard University Medical School.
"By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception." Professor Hymie Gordon, Mayo Clinic.
We all know that the "Main Stream Media" abandoned all pretense at objectivity long ago and news reporting has suffered as a result. So, now we want to go down that same road with Supreme Court justices? Are you kidding me? The whole point of being a judge is to put aside one's subjective feelings and to rule based on THE FACTS, THE LAW and THE CONSTITUTION. Of course, as humans, we often fail at that (and we should be held to account if we do!). But to actually CELEBRATE the notion that one will be bringing a "FEMALE LATINA POINT OF VIEW" to the bench suggests a very big problem.
