Anti-Abortion Group Announces Drive To Outlaw Birth Control Pill in Florida

We always knew it would come to this. It's never really about abortion, it's about sex - and punishing the people who think they can act like sluts and get away with it instead of feeling God's wrath!
TALLAHASSEE -- A nationwide anti-abortion group launched an effort in Florida Friday to outlaw all abortions and certain types of birth control, including oral contraceptives and the morning-after pill.
The religion-infused movement, called "Personhood Florida," would define conception in Florida's constitution at the "biological beginnings," supporters said -- when the sperm meets the egg. The group filed its amendment today but the exact ballot language is still being worked out, said Secretary of State Spokeswoman Jennifer Krell-Davis.
The amendment seeks to outlaw all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. Also criminalized: the morning-after pill and oral contraceptives taken by women, known as the pill. "There are some (birth control) methods that kill a child," said Pat McEwan, who is leading the Personhood Florida group.
The amendment faces extremely long odds. First, supporters must gather 676,811 signatures to make the ballot -- by Feb. 1, to go before voters in 2010.
And Florida has a 60-percent threshold for constitutional amendments to become law, a very difficult hurdle even for less radical ideas. In Colorado, the only state where the "personhood" amendment has appeared on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly rejected the idea by an almost three-to-one margin.
Even if adopted by voters, the amendment runs counter to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court opinion that held the U.S. Constitution grants women the basic right to an abortion.
Supporters say they're pushing the personhood amendment not only in Florida, but in a dozen other states.

I suggest everyone call their local Dominos Pizza and local Curves for women's health club and tell them to get these antisex conservatives to stop their anti birthcontrol action or face loss of your business and therefore your money.
In fact tell your local Dominos Pizza owner and your local Curves for women's health club owner that you refuse to do business with them until their CEOs get congress to pass the women's freedom of choice act and also gets congress to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour.

I am plus-size, and I do work out, but I chose to sign up with my commmunity center's fitness club instead of Curves, which was my other option. I will have to call Curves and tell them I would rather invest in my community than a company would like to take away my choice of when to get pregnant!

My sister belongs to Curves, but I don't want to sound like an idiot telling her something without being able to point her to a reliable source to back me up. No offense intended, but if I tell her "my internet friend maximus7 told me" she'll probably give me her "Murder, She Wrote" head shake of condescension.

As is typical of the MSM, the story isn't very accurate, and it has a long correction at the top (of course they never bother to do that when they smear liberals with BS stories). One of the groups the CEO gave money to tries to talk women out of abortions; the other two, which got the bulk of the money, don't talk about it but also aren't "militant anti-abortion groups" as the article first said. It's all well and good to support companies that have better policies, but if you start boycotting every one that has a CEO with different political views, you'll have very few choices.
Also, the founder of Domino's is a hard-core Catholic right winger worthy of a boycott. However, I don't know if he makes much money off it any more; he sold most of his stock in it a few years ago for $1 billion and is working off of that, so even if the company tanked it wouldn't affect him much. But they're a big corporate chain whose pizza sucks anyway, you shouldn't eat there just on principle.

I work for Domino's, and it's worth noting that the founder you speak of hasn't owned the company in more than 10 years and has absolutely no say in operations anymore whatsoever. To say his beliefs are the beliefs of the company today is way off base. He doesn't own any part of the company at all.

I'd think that Domino's would have realized by now that it isn't losing market share because of the product alone- I mean, really, the product is no worse than Pizza Hut's or Papa John's, though they're all pretty crappy when compared to most mom and pop pizza shops. And while the video of former Domino's employees play-acting that they're wiping boogers and farting on sub sandwiches doesn't help, the big problem Domino's has is that they play partisan politics, and people out here know it. It might be fairly silent, but Domino's is being boycotted because of its politics, especially in the younger demographic.
I used to manage a store in Everett, WA for Straw Hat Pizza in 1980 and 81 and a store that went independent in Bellevue, WA in 1982.
Dominos' employees would order pizza from us in both locations because they could not stand thier own product.

They probably have someone in their family or knows someone who actually had an abortion. I taught school for over 30 years in the South, and some of the white "Christian" girls who got pregnant got married, separated, and divorced in less than two years, and some had abortions but were never allowed to speak about it. What they don't realize is that many women from most racial/ethnic groups have abortions for personal reasons. Some of these republicans can yell really loud about the sanctity of life, but ask them to adopt/foster one of these babies saved from abortion, and all you'll hear are *crickets*. This makes a lot more sense. It's not about abortion. Never has been. It's just about sex; about forcing your morality and your religion on others.
As long as they were railing about abortion and killing "babies" and all that, they could count on a certain level of sympathy from moderates. But go after birth control and tell people they can't have sex, and the whole house of cards tumbles. I'd get every Republican politician on record as to whether they are opposed to birth control.

When religious fanatics fight against choice, or against marriage equity, the majority of voters think, "Oh that doesn't have anything to do with me, because I'm not gay and I'm not going to need an abortion. So if they say God is against those things, they must be right." On the whole, people aren't usually all that prone to thinking ahead about where the slippery slope is going to get them in the end.
But now that the fanatics are going after contraception and divorce, both of which are firmly embraced by mainstream Americans, people are going to finally wake up about the threat posed by these religious fanatics. Once they trying to get into YOUR own bedroom with THEIR own brand of religion, it becomes an entirely different matter.

There are plenty of women who are anti-abortion. I won't dispute the sexist component here, but prevalence is surely a factor: fewer people have abortions, and then only once or twice in their life*, so to many people it can be somewhat hypothetical. On the other hand, most adults use and depend on birth control, many on a weekly or even daily basis. It's easy to "give up" other people's right to an abortion, but how many people are going to give up sex without the risk of pregnancy?
*OK, I'm totally guessing at the statistics here; you could come back and tell me that the average American woman has 4.3 abortions in her life, and I couldn't really prove you wrong without research. :)
