Best Wishes To Chelsea and Marc On Their Wedding Day
Admit it. You feel like you know her.
Despite protective parents who worked hard to keep her out of the public spotlight, we still remember watching Chelsea Clinton grow up. Maybe that's why some of us still feel a little protective of her, too. When Rush Limbaugh held up a picture of her at 13 and called her "the White House dog," we were furious at his cruelty.
When Bill and Hillary's marriage was on the rocks, I think all of us felt for the young girl in the middle:
By all accounts a smart, well-mannered girl, she seems to have grown up into a wonderful young woman. I don't know about you, but I was impressed at how easily she moved into the public eye for her mother's presidential campaign -- and then moved right back into her private life.
It can't be easy, being the only child of two such powerful personalities. But Chelsea has pulled it off with considerable grace, and I hope you'll join me in wishing her only the best on her wedding day.
(P.S. Because this is C&L, and some commenters are always negative, I'll point out that the rumors about this being a $3 million wedding are untrue. Feel better now?)
I am political because I am concerned about issues, not because I like the Clintons, even Chelsea. Their lives, aside from their political impact, mean no more to me than any other rich person's life.
I am not lining up to get NPR a seat at the White House press room either. A real journalist would not give a shit. I.F. Stone taught us this long ago. NPR is just the best of the bourgeois press, not a decent source of information.
Let's not be cultural liberals, attached to certain institutions or persons as if they were our sports team.

Chelsea has her own type of challenge in having two high powered ambitious parents who are very concerned with their careers. The wedding is probably slightly under $1 million according to the latest CNN gossip. Who cares. Send the money to Bill's Haiti relief. Which of course means, you can't offend out corporate sponsors with the truth. At which point I ended my donations to VPR and notified them why. So while I would vote for Amy Goodman to get Helen's seat, I would not vote for NPR (or FAUX). I would vote for Aljazeer to get it. Need some variety in the WH press corpse.

I'm a year younger than Chelsea, so I still remember the interest in knowing that there was a little girl in the White House about my age. Now she is getting married...we're getting old! :P

I sign this, and wish Chelsea every happiness. By all accounts- personal and public- from those who know her, she seems to be a smart, personable, hard-working young lady. Anyone who's met her seems to say so. I try and think of how painful it must have been for her when the press was busy torturing her dad. She's risen above and beyond, and I wish her well.

remember when Flush Dimbulb made fun of her, and it happened several times.
One time my wife and I were having a quite dinner at a Mexican Restaurant in Chicago when this loud mouth prick next to us started ranting about how Chelsea was sooooo ugly, I was ready to say something to the old asshole when the owner walked over and gave him that STFU look. His wife explained that: "oh, he listens to that Rush Limbaugh too much", and the owner wished them a pleasant evening then walked around to our table and others thanking us for coming to his restaurant. The owner then sent the violinist around to prick & spouse and other tables to return to a more pleasant decorum.
Flush Dimbulb continued to regurgitate on and on about Chelsea, and I kept thinking that he should be forced to eat crow when she turns out to be a pretty girl.
BTW, Chelsea was named after a Joni Mitchell song, "Chelsea Morning", which was a favorite of her parents........not that it would matter to Flush Dimbulb.

It's an incredibly optimistic thing when someone gets married. You see failure all around you. My own parents' marriage failed spectacularly, miserably and for such a prolonged period of time you would think that my siblings and I would be completely gun shy.
And yet, one of the absolutely best decisions I made was marrying my husband. It hasn't always been easy, and it hasn't always been fun. But I still marvel at how much I continue to grow in love with him.
I wish that Chelsea and Mark beat the odds and find themselves growing in love with each other for decades to come.

Back in 1994, I had a high school function which took me to DC. I met Chelsea Clinton then - mind you after many attacks from Rush. I was surprised how she wasn't ugly; then again, teenagers of similar age and all so I probably saw her in a different light. I also went and spoke with her a few times at one of the dances they had there that year. Unlike women before and since, she was actually quite cordial even in telling me she wasn't interested. The Secret Service... well they weren't as cordial.

during the Viet Nam war, so he refused to work on war projects (two sons draft eligible) and got put on Apollo and space projects. He worked two or three jobs all his life to sustain the family, was a Navy vet at the end of WWII and now lives in quiet retirement in Canada. He walked away from his life long job at almost 70 and never looked back. The company tried for several years to screw him around to get him to retire, but he put up with it until he got offered a decent retirement package. He's happy to be living out of the country. Everything I needed to know about decency I learned from him.

It's not like the Clinton's don't have money, between the several books Bill and Hillary have written.
I've always found it to be the strangest damn thing how some people (and I've noticed conservative pundits, who are ridiculously rich themselves, doing this) seem to think that it's un-American or un-'regular people' to spend large amounts of money on things.
An example is Bill O'Reilly interviewing Howard Stern. Like him or not, Stern is a very successful man who did it the All-American way...he started at the bottom and worked his way up. So check the look on Stern's face (the interview's on YouTube) when O'Reilly takes him to task for spending his money. 'You have a house in the HAMPTONS, you eat at NOBU.'
A few days later, on the Stern show, they were talking about the interview and they found out that O'Reilly has a large house with a fully staffed cleaning and landscaping crew.
Seriously though...isn't it the American dream to have the means to have nice things and go to nice places? Cause now it seems to be viewed as 'elitist', which has rapidly become the most abused word in political punditry.

This is the version of the American dream that has reduced college to job training, reduced success to cars and clothes, reduced wit to reciting sitcom lines. Chelsea Clinton isn't successful. Success is working hard and achieving goals, not being born into a rich family and marrying a bankster.
