Former CIA Official: Iran Nuke Document Was Forged
You would think that a country that's so very dependent on the U.S. for economic subsidies would be hesitant to pull stunts like this, wouldn't you? And yet, that doesn't seem to be the case:
WASHINGTON, Dec 28 (IPS) - U.S. intelligence has concluded that the document published recently by the Times of London, which purportedly describes an Iranian plan to do experiments on what the newspaper described as a "neutron initiator" for an atomic weapon, is a fabrication, according to a former Central Intelligence Agency official.
Philip Giraldi, who was a CIA counterterrorism official from 1976 to 1992, told IPS that intelligence sources say that the United States had nothing to do with forging the document, and that Israel is the primary suspect. The sources do not rule out a British role in the fabrication, however.
The Times of London story published Dec. 14 did not identify the source of the document. But it quoted "an Asian intelligence source" - a term some news media have used for Israeli intelligence officials - as confirming that his government believes Iran was working on a neutron initiator as recently as 2007.
The story of the purported Iranian document prompted a new round of expressions of U.S. and European support for tougher sanctions against Iran and reminders of Israel's threats to attack Iranian nuclear programme targets if diplomacy fails.

Why wouldn't Israel do something like this? I thought they were often rewarded, by US, for oppressing people and stirring up false accusations.
Israel is well known to possess over 200 nuclear weapons with the missiles to deliver them.
They REFUSE any U.N. inspections and REFUSE to be signatories to The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
This is a classic case of "the pot calling the kettle black".
They are STILL committing war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and they have rejected/ignored The Goldstone Report as has the U.S.
Now they are continuing the building of MORE illegal settlements in occupied East Jerusalem.
They are belligerent war criminals who enjoy the support of the United States.

It is surreal to even hear a discussion among teevee "experts" on the Iranian "nuclear problem" when no one in the room acknowledges Israel's massive offensive nuclear arsenal or the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Israel's nuclear program is the source of an asymmetry in the region that is the driving force behind a fear in Iran (and formerly Iraq under Saddam Hussein) that caused them to adopt a policy of strategic ambiguity with respect to their own deterrent capabilities. It is nonsensical to even discuss non-proliferation of WMDs in the region when the biggest illegal payload is sitting in Israel pointed at Iran and other countries. The hypocracy is not lost on the Iranian leadership.
Iran is a sigantory to the NPT and the treaty requires that they be supplied with equipment and fuel for a civil nuclear program under the carrot and stick approach of the treaty. The US and our experts on the teevee are (and have been) playing a dangerous game of brinksmenship and miscalculation with respect to Iran by failing to properly acknowledge the critical distinction under the NPT between a civil versus a military nuclear program. Israel is well aware of our blind stupidity and is waiting for the chance to get our green light (which is required to traverse over Iraqi air space) to take out the reactors in Qom and Natanz.
The reason that we do not discuss the NPT is that the US, a signatory, has been in constant violation of the treaty because we have been secretly sending nuclear technology to Israel for years. The second reason we don't make the distinction clear is because the war machine and the neo-conservatives are sitting and lying in wait for a collosal miscalculation to get the war ball rolling. I guess this trial balloon failed. The fireworks should be more interesting next time.
A guy who's been out of the intelligence game for eighteen years declares a document to be a forgery (on what basis no one says) and he speculates it could be Israel or maybe the British who did it but by the time it gets here it is definitely an Israeli plot. From a technical point of view this much is true; an initiator is not some high tech device. Initiator design is about the only thing that hasn't to some degree been declassified but the simplest proposed design is a spherical lump of polonium, a rich neutron source, encased in a beryllium shield with built in asymmetries to allow mixing during the implosion. It would take exactly one RaLa test to confirm functionality of a proposed design.

The credible source on these documents being a forgery is somebody who has been out of the global intelligence field for 18 years. He of course has this information from “reliable sources.” Hasn’t this site often criticized people for reporting “facts” with nothing better to quote than “reliable sources?”
But for arguments sake, let’s say it is true and the documents have been forged. Where does this article credibly conclude that Israel is the source of the deception? How often does this site tare into right-wing pundits for broadcasting conclusions without having solid and well researched sources (as people purporting to be reporting news ought to do)? And yet the posting for this story is phrased to say that such a conclusion has been reached beyond all doubt…it is fact. That is simply not true. I have always felt that this website was better than that, and it makes me ashamed of how easily this site doesn’t live up to the standards that it has so much fun in mocking the rest of the media for not having.

Rupert Murdoch doesn't have standards. Many other articles cover this by current officials and they've known about this and suspected a forgery for over a year.

I immediately drew the conclusion the commenter was a concern troll, just based on that tired old "you liberals" crappola. Seriously, this is a blog with a liberal standpoint and there's nothing "wrong" with that. It's one of the big reasons I'm here myself.
