Go Home

Steve Clemons reacts to a close look inside the Obama White House, written by Financial Times Washington bureau chief Edward Luce. Go read the whole thing, Steven's comments are enlightening:

At a crucial stage in the Democratic primaries in late 2007, Barack Obama rejuvenated his campaign with a barnstorming speech, in which he ended on a promise of what his victory would produce: "A nation healed. A world repaired. An America that believes again."

Just over a year into his tenure, America's 44th president governs a bitterly divided nation, a world increasingly hard to manage and an America that seems more disillusioned than ever with Washington's ways. What went wrong?

Pundits, Democratic lawmakers and opinion pollsters offer a smorgasbord of reasons - from Mr Obama's decision to devote his first year in office to healthcare reform, to the president's inability to convince voters he can "feel their [economic] pain", to the apparent ungovernability of today's Washington. All may indeed have contributed to the quandary in which Mr Obama finds himself. But those around him have a more specific diagnosis - and one that is striking in its uniformity. The Obama White House is geared for campaigning rather than governing, they say.

[...] An outside adviser adds: “I don’t understand how the president could launch healthcare reform and an Arab-Israeli peace process – two goals that have eluded US presidents for generations – without having done better scenario planning. Either would be historic. But to launch them at the same time?”

Again, close allies of the president attribute the problem to the campaign-like nucleus around Mr Obama in which all things are possible. “There is this sense after you have won such an amazing victory, when you have proved conventional wisdom wrong again and again, that you can simply do the same thing in government,” says one. “Of course, they are different skills. To be successful, presidents need to separate the stream of advice they get on policy from the stream of advice they get on politics. That still isn’t happening.”

(This reinforces what I recently wrote about Obama's lack of executive skills. Seems like I'm not the only person who noticed.)

Clemons calls the piece a "vital" and "brave" article, noting that most of the insider media isn't mentioning it at all:

But one thing essential to understand is that the kind of policy that smart strategists -- including by people like National Security Adviser Jim Jones, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other advisers like Denis McDonough, Tom Donilon, James Steinberg, William Burns, (previously Gregory Craig) -- would be putting forward is getting twisted either in the rough-and-tumble of a a team of rivals operation that is not working, or is being distorted by the Chicago political gang's tactical advice that is seducing Obama towards a course that has not only violated deals he made with those who voted him into office but which is failing to hit any of the major strategic targets by which the administration will be historically measured.

President Obama needs to take stock quickly. Read the Luce piece. Be honest about what is happening. Read Plouffe's smart book again. Send Rahm Emanuel back to the House in a senior role. Make Valerie Jarrett an important Ambassador. Keep Axelrod -- but balance him with someone like Plouffe, and get back to putting good policy before short term politics.

Set up a Team B with diverse political and national security observers like Tom Daschle, John Podesta, Brent Scowcroft, Arianna Huffington, Fareed Zakaria, Katrina vanden Heuvel, John Harris, James Fallows, Chuck Hagel, Strobe Talbott, James Baker, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and others to give you a no-nonsense picture of what is going on.

And take action to fix the dysfunction of your office.

Otherwise, the Obama brand will be totally bust in the very near term.

just throw a few ideas out there and then compromise, compromise, send mixed message, re-compromise, talk tough a little, joke around, compromise, say one thing, then the opposite...
let the chips fall where they might.

presidency, and not to actually DO anything while there.

The line was with the Colts but look who won...Obama could not win with repubs anyway --now the whinners are second guessing a President that beat the best[funding and appointed insiders from the grassroots to the DNC] political team in recent history-the clintons- as an African American underdog--Then turned on point and beat the 'warroir' mccain and 'betty boop'!

He may not be a screamer dem but he does not give up on what he feels the people need! Congress has rolled over making a majority a laughing stock..and losing it with nothing done..How is that Obamas fault! Do not give in to the republican BS meme!

I tend to agree, Congress is more to blame than Obama. Dems just don't seem to goose-step as well as Republitards.

The Administration has been quite effective at putting the arm on progressives when it wants to. The problem isn't that it's poor at governing, the problem is that it's governing from the Right.

Iraq and Afghanistan were funded with supplementals without a hitch. The corporate welfare gravy train has continued without slowing. Defense spending is still sacrosanct. The Establishment Agenda is just fine.

There's just that annoying contrast between rhetoric and actions . . . .

Corruption favors the wealthy.

It's more like if you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one. Obama needs to step it up a notch and quit playing softball in a major league game. The GOP, even in its weakened state, is eating him alive.

Clinton was a perpetual campaigner as well. But it didn't stop him from getting things done. In fact, Clinton knew how to work his popularity as an effective tool in overcoming opposition. Obama seems to be easily bullied.

Of course, Obama sure hasn't helped his current campaign image by abandoning much of his original platform that got him into office. His base is not as keen on him as they once were for which the GOP is more than willing to take advantage. Obama is shaping up to be a one-termer. I think many independent voters like myself are not happy with Obama's lack of leadership and that he's shifted his position to 'Bush Lite' in an effort to placate the right wing.

fiver, explain when and how Obama put "the arms on progressives."

I recently attended an Organizing For America meeting at a local New York Democratic headquarters after the disaster in Massachusetts.

One of the biggest gripes we had is that the White House was not listening to the grassroots that elected him. It's beginning to look like Obama and his advisors, primarily Rahm Emmanuel, are more interested in keeping Obama's image untarnished by staying above any involvement in getting health care passed.

They seem oblivious of the fact that getting SOMETHING done rather than NOTHING would benefit the party.

This administration needs to get their act together, you won, now govern. As much as I hated Junior and his cronies, they at least read the tea leaves and took what was, at best, a minor mandate and shoved their agenda down our throats, Obama and his group are still trying to be voted most popular. You won, you have a majority in Congress, so something with it. As a moderate liberal, I am fed up with you.
Do the job we elected you to do; health care, close Gitmo, end DADT, get out of Iraq and re-look at Afghanistan, and if you do what you said and don't get re-elected, you left with your head held high.
What's the point of doing nothing for the 1st four years, so you can be re-elected for 4 more years, do something in your first term, stand on your record and hope for the best.

I am so unimpressed by the man I voted for now. All my excitement, the sense of being on the brink of something great, are gone.

The Luce article is excellent.

Obama's in trouble. Let's see if he's as smart as we all thought and rescues his presidency.

I doubt if any of his inner circle will draw attention to the article - it's going to have to be someone that's looking out for the country's and Obama's best interest - NOT their own.

Maybe Michelle will see it.

FlopSweat and Farce

“But the shocked and injured tone with which this move has been greeted in some quarters seems entirely misplaced. Many of the writers seem to be operating on the assumption -- or under the delusion -- that Obama actually had some kind of political-economic-social agenda that he wanted to enact as president, and that he is now "failing" to enact it, "squandering" his opportunity. There still seems to be a belief that he ran for president because he wanted to do something with all that power.

But Obama is not "failing"; he is doing exactly what he set out to do: be the president. That's it. That's all he wanted to do. And he's doing it. The panic now emanating from the White House is not that of a man watching a chance to realize his deeply held ideals for a better world slipping away from him; it's just the flopsweat of a guy trying to stay perched on top of the greasy pole for another term.”

“Obama, on the other hand, stands for nothing; thus nothing he tries to do will stand. He was already hollowed out when he came into office, with a "brand" not an agenda, not a program -- and, as becomes increasingly apparent all the time, not a clue.”

I hope this guy is wrong, but I'm not ready to say I believe he's wrong.

He left it to the Congress, and didn't aggressively move it along. That Saturday Night Live clip about the do-nothing Obama, was funny, because there was a grain of truth. After a year, if I hear any more of this "bipartisanship", I'm going to puke. It takes two to tango, and the Republicans have clearly indicated that Obama should count them out.

horses. Can you tell me what has changed since the new administration has taken over? Please?

joannew's picture

"What's changed"--compare the capabilities of George Bush and Barak Obama. Who commands more respect abroad? Who drove the economy into the ditch and who has helped to reverse its downward course? Would you rather have Vice President Biden or Vice President Cheney? Do you think the present Pres. and Vice Pres. are working to undermine the Constitution like the previous ones did? Would you rather have Supreme Court justices like Sotomayor or like Alioto and Scalia? Shall I go on? Women workers are now protected against discrimination. Millions of people have benefited directly and indirectly from the stimulus money. Whose regulatory agencies do you trust to keep your food safe and your consumer goods and cars? Who can you trust when there's an emergency--compare Bush's handling of Katrina and Obama's of Haiti.

You'd have to be as uninformed and as shallow as Sarah Palin to believe nothing has changed.

joannew's picture

I think this criticism of Obama is way over the top. I don't accept Edward Luce as infallible--check out the many critical reader comments on Amazon on his book on India. As for Obama lacking executive skills, I can't think of anything further from the truth. His swift, coordinated and comprehensive response to the emergency in Haiti is just one example.

Fluff and pacifier BS.

I didn't believe in Obama's promise of change in the way the white house is always run regardless of party as much as I HOPED he could be different. I think he sincerely meant to be different. But it is very hard to be elected and not to begin the next campaign before you leave the victory celebration. Every Pres needs very good advisors and these people are all geared to extending their gig for as long as possible. Regardless of party there is a political machine you have to work with in order to get anything done and the machine doesn't like outsiders. The machine likes the status quo. But Obama should remember that he was elected in spite of the machine by many people who wanted a pres who would show a backbone and make some REAL changes. These same people would vote for him again if he made the attempt to make changes. If he could be seen going in there and saying for instance "In this country we DO NOT torture and we live up to our treaties and will investigate those suspected of war crimes no matter how high" but when you have joined the exalted club its hard to go against another club member and why give up one iota of power that some one else no matter how corrupt achieved for the exalted club. But I say to you President Obama that I (a middle aged southern white woman one time republican) believed in you and EVEN trying to make real change, sucessfull or not would get my vote in 2012. So often politicians become blinded to reality and see what they desire as possible, But they, the republicans and even the Blue Dogs, will Never Compromise! See the reality not the desire. They have had long enough to try to compromise. Just remember the Bush years. The republicans believe compromise is "Give me everything I want exactly the way I want it. thats how we compromise"
I wish Obama's deired legacy was not to be the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT but THE NEXT FDR, THE NEW HOPE.

If you are a liar you believe everyone else lies. If you are a thief you believe everyone else steals. If you are a republican you believe everyone else is evil.

seazen's picture

then maybe Obama meant it when he said that he wanted to be President of ALL the people and, in fact, is listening to everyone as he wrestles with a veritable mountain of complex issues (all of which he seems to have a handle on).

As someone who considers himself an "independent progressive", I haver always been turned off by most of the conservative/right TV bloviators and blogs because they all seemed to be echo chambers where people came to bitch. I am getting the sad feeling that a lot of those on the left are falling into the same trap where "progressives" are afraid to disagree with other "progressives" for fear of being turned on by the those who have picked up a convenient mantra of dissatisfaction.

I thought progressives were willing to listen and to join in efforts to actually embrace change - on a continuing basis - to seek a better America. Given the immensity of the changes ahead, we all need to be involved and we must at least acknowledge that real, fundamental change in this country (just look at Congress today) is going to be a long, difficult process.

I am reading an awful lot of arm-chair quarterbacks that have already decided that in 12 months they know better about what should be done or should have been done than this President. Listening to him myself, I am not so certain that he isn't way ahead of most of us in understanding, and committing himself to, the long road. In trying to alter a broken system, there is no instant gratification.
