Limbaugh: Jackson 'Flourished' Under Reagan, 'Languished' Under Clinton and 'Died' Under Obama. What A Moron.

While fans the world over mourn the passing of the King of Pop, the King of Talk, Rush Limbaugh, put the death of Michael Jackson this way: He "flourished under Reagan," "languished under Clinton/Bush, and died under Obama." Over on MSNBC, both David Shuster and Chuck Todd poked Limbaugh for his unsavory take on the tragedy, with Todd quipping, "It's always Reagan, right?"
Meanwhile, El Rushbo's pals over at Fox News knew exactly how to interpret the wall-to-wall coverage of Jackson's death. An actual Fox News chyron alleged a "cover-up" because the media were devoting more coverage to Jackson than cap-and-trade legislation. Lord, the fun one could have using this very rationale to pick apart the stories Fox chooses to cover. I guess when you're a hammer, everything is a ... wild conspiracy designed to frighten your audience and fan the flames of their paranoia.

Maybe Rush is on to something . . . . Bob Herbert has an article today on how Jackson is emblematic of "the era of extreme immaturity and grotesque irresponsibility that was already well under way in America" during the Reagan years:

Looking at some of the petulant, entitled and somewhat child like behaviour of a lot of baby boomers (their inability to compromise regarding their assumed "living standards" i.e. they wanted to own a lot of crap) seems to indicate there are some serious developmental issues among sectors of the American population regarding their ability to reach maturity.

What’s worse is that most of his shameless lies are easily disproven, when faced with this fact he ignores it, claims that he never said what we have him on tape saying, or claims that he was taken out of context. The point is he must think all of the people around him are idiots to make his lies so transparent, that alone does not suggest a level of high intelligence.
I myself have never been able to figure out if the bastard really believes the things he says or if he knows that he is lying to his listeners. At this point I think it’s a little of both, because the things he is saying constantly now is so monumentally idiotic, there is no way an intelligent man could possibly believe the dumb things he is saying, nor would an intelligent man expect to be taken seriously knowingly saying the things he is saying now. He may be trying to hold on to whatever listeners he has left, but that would suggest that he is giving up on attracting new listeners, his ego is too big for that and probably drives his stupidity.

Actually, Michael Jackson's fortunes pretty much exactly parallel those of the Republican party. Think about it:
- Considered mainstream through the 60's and 70's.
- Achieved greatest popularity in the early 80's under Reagan despite early signs of weirdness.
- Increasingly unstable under Bush I and Clinton, but continued to be relevant, have minor successes, and draw fans.
- Finally went completely batshit insane under Bush II; most of the fans are remembering the past days of the 80's and trying to ignore what they see now.
- Died under Obama.
Jackson was establishing a name for himself long before Reagan. In fact, his biggest hit before Thriller was in the Carter years! If anything, the Reaganites(and Tipper Gore) would've tried to ban his music if he wasn't popular with celebrities, too. They certainly tried to do that to any other black artists and/or metal bands popular with kids, mostly because of how they dressed.
Maybe someone can convince Rush that this is the way to Superstar Heaven and that he ought to be thinking about going down the same road. He's already got the drug thing on his side...
