GLOBALWARMING_bfcb9.png

Graph via Paul Krugman, who points us to this important story:

It was the hottest April on record in the NASA dataset. More significantly, following fast on the heels of the hottest March and hottest Jan-Feb-March on record, it’s also the hottest Jan-Feb-March-April on record [click on figure to enlarge].

The record temperatures we’re seeing now are especially impressive because we’ve been in “the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century.” It now appears to be over. It’s just hard to stop the march of manmade global warming, well, other than by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, that is.

Most significantly, NASA’s March prediction has come true: “It is nearly certain that a new record 12-month global temperature will be set in 2010.″

Software engineer (and former machinist mate in the US Navy) Timothy Chase put together a spreadsheet using the data from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (click here). In NASA’s dataset, the 12-month running average temperature record was actually just barely set in March — and then easily set in April.

Actually, NASA first made its prediction back in January 2009:

Given our expectation of the next El Niño beginning in 2009 or 2010, it still seems likely that a new global temperature record will be set within the next 1-2 years, despite the moderate negative effect of the reduced solar irradiance.”

Of course, there never was any global cooling — see Must-read AP story: Statisticians reject global cooling; Caldeira — “To talk about global cooling at the end of the hottest decade the planet has experienced in many thousands of years is ridiculous.”

In fact, the 12-month record we just beat was set in … 2007!

Don't believe in global warming, no problem. Had we aggressively pursued domestically produced alternative fuels years ago we might be in much better shape today in a number of ways. We would have created new business, new good paying jobs here at home, have a high demand exportable good, and we would have quit giving our good money to oil rich terrorist states. Terrorists would not be able to afford a plane flight over to the US and we would not need to meddle in the Mideast hardly at all. Also we would breathe cleaner air which would help reduce serious health risks such as cancer. Large cities could actually see a complete reduction in smog, that insidious brown cloud hovering over cities day after day. So forget the global warming aspect of it, there is NO reason to not get off fossil fuels once and for all.

I saw one once when a bunch of teenagers drove by in a car.

skycypher's picture

it's not man made climate change or global warming that is the cause according to HOPI indian prophesy:

HOPI PROPHECY OF END TIME
(The Coming of Split-Time)

In Hopi prophecy it is spoken in a mouth to ear tradition that 'many pahana (Caucasians) will disappear in Time. He will lock his doors and windows and leave his cities empty and without caretaker. The streets will be deserted, the wind will blow and nobody will be in the pahana streets to hear the wind. If there is a field of Corn, one ear of Corn will remain.'

In scripture it is written:

'…And the land hath been defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed laws, They have changed a statute, They have made void a covenant age-during. Therefore a curse hath consumed the land, And the inhabitants are become desolate, Therefore consumed have been inhabitants of the land, And few men have been left…'

A statute (Law) will have been changed, Time, and those that travel into Time to escape the Great Purification to come will have broken their covenant age-during with God.

We are covenanted, 'contracted,' to remain in the 'Genesis' time-frame (genetic time-frame) that was especially established for us by God when He/She created us. God’s purpose in locking us into a genetic time-frame on Earth is wonderful, and its end is perfection (perfected, crowning life). We are locked into the genetic time-frame that we may evolve to become angelic beingsl but soon the door to another time-frame will be unlocked and you will be faced with a choice: progression or stagnation. Evolution need not be a point of contention for those who believe in the Bible: God created man on the sixth day, and on the sixth day man was still a primal creature. As time progressed, so did man. Man's evolution is locked into the forward progression of time that allows life, death, and evolution. Progress is not found in the pastl on the contrary, the future is only found by never returning to the past. Be like Lot, don't look back-- look forward.

Land and Life are One, ‘Tutskwa I’qatsi.’ We have always been with this Land we know as Earth, in all our lifetimes. For we were created from this Land. Within the cycle of life and death we return to our home planet as She makes Her journey in nature’s cycles closer to the Sun. Mankind will be faced with a temptation, and people’s ignorance or fear of death may lead them astray. Temptation will be presented in the form of time travel and prolonging one’s life in this present incomplete form. Thus, we will be tempted to escape the natural event approaching upon our Earth (the true cause of ‘global warming’ and other weather and geo-disturbances) that takes us to the heavenly Fifth World/Morning Star orbit.

As always, some will choose wisely and some will not. On December 26, 2004, the Earth experienced a strong earthquake/contraction. There is a very natural reason for what is taking place with the increase in weather changes upon our home planet. In Hopi it is called The Great Purification known as ‘Nohu Na’uyi’yta,’ "The Secret of the Hidden Egg,’ the birth of the so-called ‘Mystery Egg’ hidden deep within the heart of the Earth. Our Mother Earth is in a very real sense in the throes of Her birth pains, in labor to give birth to Her Core-Heart, as She has done six times during prior Purification cycles. If we remain immovable from Her once more, we will evolve to our perfected, crowning life.

As has been asked of us: ‘Who has ears to hear?’ ”

global warming deniers seem to be multiplying even in the face of all the science on the other side. Perhaps if they all put on their tin foil hats they would reflect enough sunlight back into space to start the ice age they seem to expect. Only hope I can see.

Much warmer-than-average winter, then in April we were in the 70s and 80s- 25 degrees above average.

It's been back to normal temps for May, though.

But, of course, the NASA data is compiled globally, not regionally.

Evet's picture

It's really cold inside my fridge. Therefore it's entirely cold all over the whole world and universe, too! Because I can't be bothered to understand climate! Because I'm a complete moron!

Andy K's picture

It kept the jet stream away from us. No Alberta Clippers bringing sub-zero temps whipping across the Great Lakes. We usually get a few weeks in the dead of winter when we see daytime temps in the single digits above zero, with a few days where we don't get above zero, but this winter...twenties.

And with very little snow. The '08-'09 snowfall totals set a record high. This winter- barely any.

Evet's picture

smited and protected ya from the evil ice.

Andy K's picture

Doesn't push the jet stream up to the Arctic Circle as would happen in a non-El Nino year. So instead of the Upper Midwest getting bombarded by frigid air from northern Alaska and northwestern Canada, regions further south (and further west, like WA, OR and northern California) get blasted by slightly warmer- but still cold- air from southern Alaska and the northern Pacific.

Think of it this way: The Polar Jet Stream is a conveyor belt that usually pulls the cold air from the Arctic Circle, down through Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan through the Dakotas and Minnesota, through the Great Lakes and New England before exiting into the North Atlantic. This year that conveyor belt shifted a few hundred miles to the south. And what you got was mild compared to what we up here normally get. A bit warmer, and because you've got nothing that will cause anything close to the "lake effect", less snowfall.

the American people will not want to address global
climate integration in a comprehensive manner.

Almost 40 years ago, in 1972 the "Club Of Rome" published "Limits To Growth" and concluded that to avoid all-out catastrophe in the 21st century it was mandatory to dramatically cut both industrial output and population growth immediately.

The US did neither and has done neither since.

US population growth is the so-called "elephant in the room" ..

In the next 30 years US population is predicted to swell by 27%. Wherever you now see 4 people, in 30 years there will be slightly more than 5.

In the next 30 years China's population will grow IN RAW NUMBERS by just as much as the US, but then China's population will actually begin to decline, whereas the US population will continue to grow.

It's bad enough that we MUST change the lifestyle of the 310 million in the US today. In 30 years that number will be closer to 400 million and GROWING.

Magnetism is not as well understood as it should be (or that fact is not published because it is an excellent form of propulsion), and according to Einsteins theory of relativity, the only thing that can effect magnetism in a body of mass is another body of mass coming closer. So the question is this. Since the planets surrounding the sun have been in an alignment very tight together, and which alignment is so rare it only happens every 2,000 years, doesn't it stand to reason that the alignment of the planets, coalescing their mass property has become the attracting mass required to effect the magnetic energy of the sun? And when they come to the end of the convergence and enter the more normal state of circulating around the sun in more spread out orbits, won't the mass attraction diminish and the sun spots become more normalized?

I am sickened and shocked actually that we don't have physicists capable of noticing this effect and publishing it to counter this story.

Our political leaders aren't the ONLY ones with crummy educations these days. And tell me why some better educated scientist from another nation would seek to help America these days by answering questions of this nature? Would that be to increase her power to bring armies of retribution to their own nations if they don't allow American corporations to lend, build, and live on the usury of their nation by force?

The only education anyone has sought since the Powell Memo is that of the monetary shark.

There is not enough magnetic force among the total planetary system to affect the sunspots and gravitation is essentially driven by the single largest central mass in the system, that being the Sun. So your hypothesis, though it is quite effective as a vehicle for scientific name-dropping and verbose enough to be a source of confusion is essentially a large pixel-spill. Gravitational effect, even among moving planetary masses is essentially linear and thus the vector components likely cancel each other out, even acounting for velocity and direction.

I myself and me are quite amused at that extensive tome you produced and am quite happy that posters on this blog are willing to admit utter confusion as to the intent of your paragraphs.

Your political leaders are corporate lackeys, true. Since the Powell Memo, I will say that little of referential associative significance connected to said event has occurred.

There is a very natural process within our solar system as with all solar systems in which God’s creations evolve to higher life. This process is a natural forward progression which takes place from Age to Age as our Earth has moved one step closer to the Sun known in Hopi as the Sacred Path of Migration.

The increase in weather events upon our Earth signal the next step of evolution is approaching and is directly related to where a Moon comes from. Prior to this Holy Event, the day will come when time travel will be presented to the world as a ‘great new discovery’ and people will be tempted to use this knowledge to abandon our Earth thinking that this is wonderful new knowledge or that they are ‘saving themselves’. However, this is not new knowledge and it is knowledge that is forbidden to us at our present stage of evolution. We have one more step to go with our Earth as we approach our final step of evolving with Her as She takes Her next position to the Morning Star.

It is natural to be born and it is natural to die, through the cycle of life and death we evolve forward. Many people fear death and will fear what is taking place upon our Earth. Instead of understanding that this is very natural and a natural process of evolving with our Earth to higher life, they may fear what they witness upon our home planet and think She is destructing. She is not going to destruct, She is going to evolve. Everything in Nature and all those that remain with Her will evolve in unison as has happened six times before to bring us to this stage of development and third orbit from the Sun.

It is spoken in Hopi that :

..."Many pahana will disappear in Time. He will lock his doors and windows and leave his cities empty and without caretaker. The streets will be deserted, the wind will blow and nobody will be in the streets of pahana to hear the wind. If there is a field of Corn, one ear of Corn will remain."

Time is to be honored as we presently know it, by a clock by a calendar. Know that as the increase in weather changes continue and society is presented with the ’new discovery of time travel’ know that the Holy Event is near and when fear is placed in the hearts of mankind and told that our beloved home planet is going to destruct, know that people are being misled.

"We have always been with this Land, in all our lifetimes, for we were created from this Land and within the cycle of life and death we return to our home planet as She makes Her journey closer to the Sun. Mankind will be faced with a temptation and people’s ignorance or fear of death may lead them astray. Temptation will be presented in the form of time travel and prolonging ones life in this present form in attempts to escape the natural Event approaching upon our Earth. As always, some will choose wisely and some will not. On December 26, 2004, the Earth experienced a strong earthquake. There is a very natural reason for what is taking place with the increase in weather changes upon our home planet. In Hopi it is called The Great Purification known as Nohu Na’uyi’yta "The Secret of the Mystery Egg".

I became a believer in global warming when I visited the Columbia Icefield visitor center in Banff National Park a few years ago. The Columbia Icefield is a huge glacier that straddles the Continental Divide in the Canadian Rockies. Its waters flow into the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

There's a display there of atmospheric temperatures extending back thousands of years, derived from dissolved atmospheric gasses sampled from ice cores drilled thousands of feet into the glacier. The data shows patterns of warming and cooling going back millenia, including ice ages. Then, in the last 100 years or so, average temperatures go way up in a steep spike.

When you walk out of the building, facing part of the glacier across the highway, signposts show how the glacier has receded, more than a mile in 120 years. All the glaciers in the Rockies are receding, as are all glaciers in North America and almost every single glacier in the world.

When you see it with your own eyes, the reality of global warming is undeniable.

Yellowbird's picture

I am a believer in man made global warming too.

And it angers me that some people think that they have the right to endanger the entire planet to line their own pockets. They are threatening the survival of our OWN species and haven't that right.

CoIntelPro.PronktasticlyAgainst.SCLM.E-Voting.Incumbents's picture

what is going on in the GoM is an extinction event for many species. the oxygen depletion from the natural gas is going to be dwarfed by the ultimately corrosive effect of it's final byproducts.

skycypher's picture

Many people intuitively sense that we are living in an important
time. Some people have received dreams or visions portending
major events that lie on the near horizon. It is becoming very
certain that something is causing a change of climate, and
an escalation of severe weather and geological disturbances
(earthquake and volcanic activity) which many scientists atttribute
to “global warming” due to greenhouse gases. However, this view
of “global warming” cannot explain the increases in the number
and severity of the geological disturbances occurring in the world.
Something yet undiscovered is happening deep within our Earth,
at Her Core-Heart. Our Earth is literally in labor to birth Her
inner Core-Egg through Her birth-canal emerging in Antarctica,
in the Weddell Sea. Th is “hidden” Core is sometimes referred to
as “The Hidden Egg,” or “Mystery Egg,” the birthing of our Earth
Mother’s Core-Egg at the end of Purification Time (a prominent
period to watch during our Earth’s birth pains is late August
through September).

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and
earthquakes in various places. But all these things are the
beginning of birth pains (or “birth pangs”). (Mt. 24: 7-8,
Mk. 13:8 WEB)

Following the ejection-birth of Her Core-Egg, our Earth
will move out of its present orbit (as will the other worlds of our
system), and be instated in the crowning place of our solar system:
the place of the Fifth World, Heaven-- the orbit of the Morning
Star. Th ose of us who hold fast to the Earth, enduring through
the end of this last Purification guided by faith, humility, and
love, will inherit the paradise that our Earth will then become.

Global warming is real, but not for the reasons that have been put forth thus far. Some scientists have noted that greenhouse gases cannot adequately explain what is occurring; but no other theory has yet been announced to the public.

Something unknown to most scientists, but known to many indigenous peoples, is happening deep within the heart of the Earth, which is the true cause of the changes being noted-- including the increasing number and intensity of earthquake and volcanic activity which cannot be explained by the greenhouse effect.

Our Earth Mother is in labor to birth Her Core-Egg as She has done in previous Purification cycles (also occurring in the other worlds of our system). As explained in Earth Mother our Womb of Life:

"...As earlier discussed, our Earth Mother is now in labor to birth Her Core. The cradle of the changes in the world’s climate is the Weddell Sea in West Antarctica. The Weddell Sea is the Earth’s yoni (birth canal), the point where Her Core will come out. So understandably there is a lot of activity going on under the Weddell Sea floor as the Earth’s time to give birth draws nearer.

The heat produced by the Earth’s inner laboring rises to the surface through Her birth canal into the Antarctic where the atmosphere and ocean currents there are altered. This is the true cause of global warming, not greenhouse gases which cannot adequately explain the rising earthquake and volcanic activity in the world.

The global warming and other Earth changes would be occurring even if we were not an industrial, fossil fuel driven culture. Science does not always correctly distinguish between environmental changes which are caused by nature, and those which are caused by man. The warming which is melting the ice shelves in West Antarctica is one case of mistaken identity.

The world climate is very sensitive to the extent of the winter sea ice which normally increases during winter. Sea ice insulates the ocean from the atmosphere, stabilizes the surface water, and maintains a balanced Antarctic atmosphere. A balanced Antarctic atmosphere is important to a balanced world atmosphere. Lately, the Antarctic atmosphere has been increasingly agitated. Higher than normal (and climbing) ocean temperatures (emanating from the Core) and rapidly melting ice is disturbing the atmosphere.

Less sea ice results in reduced reflection and insulation; this has a direct effect on the Antarctic atmosphere, causing local weather changes which impact on the world’s climate. In other words, the sea ice pack stabilizes ocean conditions, and stable ocean conditions maintain a stable world atmosphere. Previously, stable polar conditions exerted a balancing influence over the Earth’s climate. Now, with the heat rising from the Core, increasing temperatures in the Antarctic translate into large fluctuations in world temperatures, as well as typhoons, hurricanes, and tornadoes.

Presently, the amount of heat lost to the Antarctic atmosphere is significant. The greatest consistent rise in temperature in the Southern Hemisphere is taking place in the vicinity of the Weddell Sea where the meteorological records of the British Antarctic Survey, Faraday Research Station, show a rise in mean annual air temperature of 2.5 °C. Though this figure may appear small, in terms of the affect on sea ice and the atmosphere it is great.

The mystery of the changing world climate is not really a mystery, and man is not to be blamed. A butterfly is flapping its wings in Antarctica.

Between now and the birth of the Core the weather will become more unpredictable as our Earth’s birth pains intensify. There will be more earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and severe storms, as our Earth Mother nears the time to birth Her Egg, as well as secondary effects from the geological upheavals, the warming of the oceans and permafrost, and changes in solar energy output during this period..."

The turmoil ahead is best put in perspective by understanding that this cycle is natural, and has occurred in our system before. Each cycle progresses the life upon our worlds, which for us will be our final step from Homo sapiens to what the Q'ero call Homo luminous. My native father liked the term that psychiatrist Carl Jung used: Homo maximus, greatest man. This is the destiny awaiting those who hold fast to our Mother Earth, rejecting all overtures to abandon Her, which will soon be put forth.

If we will trust in our Earth Mother one more time, we will receive Her greatest reward.

Why can global warming deniers insult the integrity of scientists and dismiss Al Gore as someone who's fat while to suspect their motives as something other than earnest truth-seeking is considered taboo? I say what they're actually denying is a future in which they'll have to drive less. Oh no! Heaven help us all! Without their cars Americans are as helpless as newborns, one gasoline-powered vehicle for each "independent" member of the family. But who's worried anyway! Talk to a conservative long enough and you'll hear some ridiculous fantasy or another about the future. Jesus will come riding in on a dinosaur to take them up in the Rapture, leaving the rest of us to cope with a poisoned planet. Space aliens from an advanced civilization will rescue us -- why they'd bother visiting here at all is never questioned. An incredible new (and cheap!) source of energy -- the element energerium perhaps, mined from the dark side of the moon -- will keep everybody happy and secure in their family tanks. Drill baby, drill! What do spills and pollution matter, since cold fusion and something called "hydrogen" are just around the corner? Let's call a Tea Party Convention and repeal the laws of physics too, the ones that say you can't get energy from nothing -- after all, science is just an elitist debating society. What do all those liberals on the big government tit know about anything? ...By the way, sorry guys, the Rapture already happened in 1953, but since everybody "taken up" was poor and so few of them were white, nobody noticed.

He or they come back, and get pissed about the mess we've made. Violence ensues.

I have several friends who are devoutly republican and believe, respectively, in each scenario you mentioned. One thinks Jesus will come riding in (sans dinosaur) and save us all at the last minute and the other is hoping that aliens will come and give us all this neat technology that will power our cars and cure our ills.
These people went to he same school as me, grew up under the same enlightened times of TV, with PBS, Carl Sagan, Nova, hell even Bill Nye the science guy. How did they get so screwed up? Oh yeah, and the scary thing is they vote! Republican!
I can't argue with them anymore. I don't have the energy. All I can say is, If we're wrong the worst thing that happens is we get a cleaner planet with better water and air. If they're wrong our planet no longer sustains human life. I'd rather err on the side of caution.

It sure as hell isn't temperature. A graph without units is utterly meaningless.

the difference, in hundredths of a degree centigrade, from the average over 1951-80:

So it is temperature, in a way: the difference between the average for the base period 1951-1980, in units Centigrade.

So it's gone up about a whole degree C, which really sucks when it doesn't go back down!

so much more impressive without that particular piece of information. Do a regression analysis and that looks like about 0.6 degrees per half century.

Humans had better develop the ability to address this and other pressing global issues or we are going to be in serious trouble.

We have got to get a lot smarter and fast. I don't think we have what it takes and have little hope of having these issues solved. Only solace is that the haves who, for the most part, have created this mess will suffer along with the have nots.

To get a lot smarter we have to clear the dead Republican wood. they are all just pretty much stupid or wigged out.

My Dad was having his car washed in the summer of 53 in Terre Haute when the black guy who was wiping down his wheels just plain disappeared from his drive.

I'm thinking they are lying. Because it was freezing this winter and it has been cold all spring.

They are not above lying and I have heard great controversy regarding 'Climategate'.

In 1896 Arrhenius completed a laborious numerical computation which suggested that cutting the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by half could lower the temperature in Europe some 4-5°C (roughly 7-9°F) — that is, to an ice age level. But this idea could only answer the riddle of the ice ages if such large changes in atmospheric composition really were possible. For that question Arrhenius turned to a colleague, Arvid Högbom. It happened that Högbom had compiled estimates for how carbon dioxide cycles through natural geochemical processes, including emission from volcanoes, uptake by the oceans, and so forth. Along the way he had come up with a strange, almost incredible new idea.

It had occurred to Högbom to calculate the amounts of CO2 emitted by factories and other industrial sources. Surprisingly, he found that human activities were adding CO2 to the atmosphere at a rate roughly comparable to the natural geochemical processes that emitted or absorbed the gas. As another scientist would put it a decade later, we were "evaporating" our coal mines into the air. The added gas was not much compared with the volume of CO2 already in the atmosphere — the CO2 released from the burning of coal in the year 1896 would raise the level by scarcely a thousandth part. But the additions might matter if they continued long enough...Arrhenius made a calculation for doubling the CO2 in the atmosphere, and estimated it would raise the Earth's temperature some 5-6°C.

Arrhenius did not see that as a problem. He figured that if industry continued to burn fuel at the current (1896) rate, it would take perhaps three thousand years for the CO2 level to rise so high.
