Those Crazy Conspiracy Theorists

Krugman points out the media complicity in treating these morons as credible:

So Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and Karl Rove all claim that the financial crisis was a liberal conspiracy, generated either by evil mastermind Chuck Schumer or by wily journalists.

Why does such stuff flourish? Probably because there is no punishment for it — as long as you’re on the right, and I mean right, side. Let Michael Moore point out, entirely correctly, the close ties between the Saudis and the Bush family, and he’s blasted as a crazy conspiracy theorist. On the other hand, let Donald Luskin suggest, in 2004, that George Soros is planning to engineer a financial crisis to defeat Bush, and he gets to publish front-page articles in the Washington Post Outlook section declaring that there isn’t a recession.

Fuck that, it's a full-blown Depression that can only be ameliorated by ending The Long War!

Why does such stuff flourish?

Hmmm

You are writing about it. So I'm thinking that is making it flourish.

Bob Roberts's picture

only to mock them and their adherents does not cause such theories to flourish. It's only when conspiracy theories are treated seriously and given a serious platform that they become mainstream and acceptable.

C&L does useful work in shining lights on the MSM's disparate treatment of conspiracy theories depending on the ideology of the theorist.

wisedup's picture

I agree with Bob Roberts. The more they sling the bull and C&L and others exposes it for what it is, IS the truth shining thru. I have a dying out rightwinger friend. He has quietly seen how stupid these people have been. He now doesn't quote Limp,O'liely etc. and is now nice to talk with. True that we are all sick of it,but there is a lot of catching up for America. The MSM's republican water bucket has a hole in it,and it's getting bigger.

If democrats had that much power and moxy, we'd be watching President Pelosi turn over the reins of power to Obama.

Personal Failure's picture

we're also capable of defeating religion and making all children gay.

Personal Failure's picture

Rush Limbaugh regularly calls this the "Obama Recession" because Obama's 3% tax increase is what is actually causing businesses to lay people off and fail. The fact that the recession started at least a year before Obama ever mentioned that is irrelevant.

Oh, and it was Clinton, not Bush, who deregulated everything and caused the housing bubble. The only thing that happened during Bush's tenure was job growth, economic growth and the lowest deathrate from terrorism in the US!

cognitive dissonance, anyone?

Leadership's picture

Clinton IS guilty of deregulation. And war crimes.

Among other things. I am guilty of hating Clinton just 3% less than

Cheney. All are part of an overclass that rules this world and you

aren't part of the process. Obama has joined this overclass and will

rule in a manner that is best for the overclass. We are not involved.

Limbaugh and company is the ring announcer at a pro wrestling match.

It's not what he says, it's how he says it.

Bob Roberts's picture

How the fuck is President Clinton guilty of war crimes?

If you seriously think Clinton is just 3% better than Cheney, then you deserve Cheney.

William Jefferson Clinton started out with almost nothing. He was not born a member of any overclass. He became President through his own efforts. Something similar can be said of Barack Hussain Obama. (Unlike either Bush).

Or is your point simply that anyone who gets to a position of authority is automatically part of an overclass and won't have your best interests at heart? If so, get used to it. That's how human nature works.

Yup

Since those heady few days after the election of Obama, I've been warning (on this site and others) that the right-wingers are not going to go away, that, in fact, they are only going to become emboldened with each passing day. This latest horseshit spewing from the mouth of Limbaugh is proof-positive that what I said was correct.

While it is obvious that these fuckers are insane, it is also true that the more audacious the lie, the more likely it is to be believed. Refer back to German history circa 1930's if you have any doubt about that. Why is it any different now? Why? It isn't.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: We underestimate these scumbags at our own peril. This goes for Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Ingraham, Medved, Beck, and a whole host of other demonstrably unbalanced radio and tv pundits. They cannot and must not be allowed one scintilla of credibility. Every remark must be immediately and thoroughly discredited - loudly and without mercy.

These fuckers are spoiling for a fight. Let's bring it to them. They started it. It's up to us to finish it.

trank's picture

rove and oreilly couldnt do shit without limbaugh and the talk radio monopoly to do the groundwork.

for 20 years, since reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine, GOP media operatives and overpaid talking heads have been riding the limbaugh/talk radio bandwagon and picking from their prechewed assortment of GOP-coordinated lies, distortions, and exaggerations.

the media double standards, the denial and hypocrisy, and the sabotage it does to our democracy would not be possible without the talk radio monopoly with its coordinated uncontested repetition to enable it. when these idiots go on national TV and repeat the GOP talking points they read in the morning or last week, they know they've already been pounded into the earholes of tens of millions of americans across the country and many of them are watching at that very moment just to hear them be repeated once again, with images.

until progressives/liberals/dems/americans realize the crucial part the talk radio monopoly plays as myth maker and political correctness cop real democracy and bipartisanship is impossible- to talk and strategize like it is is just plain naive.

now is a great example. mike connell goes down in an 'accidental' plane crash and the tradmedia has nothing on it, but obama was blogo's best friend and caused the recession.

This was going to happen sooner or later and perhaps it's for the best. People are finally waking up to the fact that the bailouts are only for those who know how to play the system as long as your well connected, have no use for the rule of law, are guaranteed your golden parachutes while the unclean masses ( or what's left of the middle class ) celebrate the holidays with spam and Mountain Dew.
Have read through the entire site yet, but sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction. Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Now Greece is burning and all hell is breaking out in Russia, China, France, Denmark and Spain. Shut It Down

Stop the Bail-Outs

No more BailOuts! No BailOut for the Banks! We have been ripped off of our own resources, jobs and taxes. WE HAVE PLENTY of natural resources in our country OIL, TECHNOLOGY, AGRICULTURE to give Americans the money and jobs WE NEED.

The Bankers and CEO's are worried about keeping their own excessive life-styles.

NO BAILOUT!! Stand Up and demand JUSTICE.

We MUST demand Accountability: Immediately 'fire' the executives of all the failed companies, as done in the UK, and abrogate their severance packages.

America has been burglarized, in broad daylight. Will anyone be held accountable?

Accountability on the part of those who took the companies down:

a) resignations of all upper management

b) the immediate return of executive compensation packages

c) full public disclosure by members of Congress of assets held, with possible conflicts

d) a ban on political campaign contributions from officers of corporations

e) a requirement that 2008 cycle candidates return political contributions to share holders of contributing corporations.

Congress has borrowed TRILLIONS of dollars, on top of our already outrageous debt, to hand out tax rebates, to save Fannie, to save Freddie, to save AIG.

Stand Up and demand JUSTICE!

Enough is enough! WE WILL NO LONGER STAND BY WHILE YOU LOOT OUR COUNTRY!

Demonstrating at McCain's and Kyl's offices etc.

But I don't think that we've ever had more than 600, and most of the time just a hundred.

We would need demonstrations like I attended in the 60's - 70's where thousands closed down city centers.

Good luck with that.

The take home message is that the right has been organized and disciplined in pushing their message to the point that the main stream media assume it must have credibility, simply because it's been repeated so often.

I am optimistic that if we stop whining and push our message, like folks like Krugman are, progressives will soon be able to have the same effect on the media, Rupert Murdoch not withstanding.

(The Economist recently mentioned in passing that Rupert is becoming more liberal!)

wouldn't become irrelevant.

the mainstream media doesn't assume the rightwing has credibility.

the msm leans far right b/c the msm IS part of the rightwing. corporate owned and controlled, and ideologically in bed with the right.

no matter what progressives do, the msm--as it exists today--will NEVER adopt a progressive outlook.

it is not about pushing the message--as the conversation relates to the media--it is about challenging media conglomeration, corporate-controlled media, advertising-based news broadcasts, etc. until that changes, nothing will change, imo.

Why does "Liberal Mastermind" seem like an oxymoron to me? I am not suggesting Liberals are stupid, but let's face facts. I mean, he could say the truth that:
1.) The national debt nearly doubled under Bush
2.) They fought the war on terrorism where the enemy wasn't and left stagnant the front where the enemy was, squandering $600B.
3.) The GOP opposed regulations on Wall Street. Their last Presidential candidate was calling himself "Mr. Deregulator".
4.) The GOP has opposed reforming health care to make it cost competitive with our competitors, putting our industries that provide health care to their employees at a disadvantage.

But, if Limbaugh says things like that, he isn't going to help his cause. Hence the parallel reality continues.

For all of the denials, corporate media is the heart of the wingnut sound machine. Despite being wrong on everything, literally everything, we still get the same schmucks hosing down the public with the same conservative talking points on every broadcast and cable 'news' program and print publication. Journalistic accountability? please. More like journalistic co-conspirators.

And please if I hear any more of this post-partisan bullshit, I'm gonna puke. Conservatives do not compromise and expecting that they will, if we sacrifice just a little more of our principles, is the same masochistic, co-dependent thinking that's resulted in the ruin of America.

It is pointless to listen to those idiots.
