Go Home

While new unemployment claims rise again and Americans are losing their homes because they can't find work - work that doesn't exist, Republicans obstruct the passage of extended unemployment benefits by adding "poison pill" amendments aimed at ACORN and at providing yet another tax cut.

We won't forget. And we won't let you forget.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of first-time filers for unemployment insurance rose last week, snapping two weeks of significant declines, according to a government report issued Thursday.

There were 531,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended Oct. 17, up 11,000 from an upwardly revised 520,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said in a weekly report. The week included the Columbus Day holiday.

A consensus estimate of economists surveyed by Briefing.com expected 515,000 new claims.

"[The initial claims figure] is somewhat surprising," wrote Jim Baird analyst at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in a research note. "Excess slack in the system and employers' hesitance to ramp up hiring appear likely to weigh on the labor markets for some time."

[...] The government said 5,923,000 people filed continuing claims in the week ended Oct. 10, the most recent data available. That was down 98,000 from the preceding week's ongoing claims, and would -- if not revised -- mark the first time since late March that continuing claims were below 6 million.

But the slide in continuing claims may signal that more filers are falling off those rolls and into extended benefits.

Continuing claims reflect people filing each week after their initial claim until the end of their standard benefits, which usually last 26 weeks. The figures do not include those who have moved to state or federal extensions, nor people who have exhausted their benefits.

Yesterday 30 people had been reporting to the authorities in Sweden that they experienced such severe side effects that they felt the need to contact a hospital. Today the number is 140. The swedish newspaper Expressen is the only one in Sweden reporting on these cases and as usual this is most likely only the tip of a rather large iceberg. UPDATE: According to Dagens Nyheter, the number of reported side effects are now a few hours later 190.

Even though it appears that you might be a little off topic, an English translation of the Swedish website you provided in the link above, might be very helpful for us to understand what the heck your talking about.

Anyway...

I agree with Handypants that the GOP are shooting themselves in the foot with this one, but unfortunately they are taking innocent people down with them...

I've never seen change without a fire

Politics before people. It's American Politics. Two party politics works as well as Capitalism. It's simple. Each politician (Congress, Senate, President) gets a one time six year term. After that, you're done, you cannot run again. Take away some of the perks like public health care for life to weed out the leeches. That and a nonpartisan ethics board that is permitted to shoot lobbyist as they hand someone their business card.

AND HEALTH CARE FOR ALL!

health care for all... except ex politicians!

That's one of the perks we have to take away. That's probably why most of them run anymore.

I think its a great idea to take away the perks of out representatives while they are failing the citizenry. First we need some real campaign finance reform and then we need to start cutting their pay until they start serving the people who elected them.

Take back the money Wall Street spent on bonuses, and give it to the unemployed! Too simple? I don't think so, you crooked and greedy bastards.

Very soon being a Republican will be equated with wife beating, child molestation, pawning Grandma's only television, mugging a blind person, lifting valuables from the hospital rooms of terminally ill comatose cancer patients....

hooker frequenting, public bathroom toe tapping, Appalachian hiking, cheating on your spouse, bribe taking, war profiteering, war mongering, dereliction of duty, violating oaths of office, using your office for personal gain, lying, hypocritical behavior. Oh, yeah. And thinking businessman Jesus sanctions all you do, regardless of what it is because you think you are chosen. I agree that you are chosen. The question is what are you chosen for? Might not be what you are anticipating.

They may wait till it gets colder, or maybe they best do it, now, or maybe they wait till summer? I think in January.

More people are probably screwed out of the unemployment system from all kinds of other reasons. Some dork weed wrote some where a resturant in Newville fired a guy for stealing 20 and has done this many times now over the past few years, I bet he even keeps winning the UC claims against his cases. These people out here are very criminal. Also very republicam, I can but you cant. When I do it it is OK, But when you do it not OK.

That person didn't mention the name of the returant.

I saw almost 30 people working at Lowes tonight!

business I am going into, along with the hibachi heater/cook stoves that I intend to sell with the boxes. Anyone interested in buying a franchise?

Lol, that sounds very unwater proof. You may have a good idea but no land? 2 UC checks from average people prolly pay for some sort of long term cardboard box with a little ruber roofing and some duck tape.....Spray paint Obamaville on the sides?????Hehehe....

You can add your own personal touches to those you sell. It won't be like McDonald's where everything has to be exactly the same. I believe in freedom of expression.

nice. When the cops tell you to move along, just fold up and go. Toss it right into your shopping cart and off to new horizons. It will be a thing of beauty.

get some small exaust sytem clamps for a car use the hand truck stucture to assemble a nice wire rack from wall mart on the inside, maybe even a kraco radio and a small solar cell. 1 Led bulb. Cool shit.

Neoatg - you're spot on with that. They don't want folks working, having health insurance, or *gasp* creating unions. Much preferable that folks stay broke and angry, spending the day with basic cable and AM radios where their minions and flying monkeys fanatically endeavor to saturate despondent minds with the farcical concept that the oligarchs were not responsible for their unemployment in the first place. It's quite the deft strategy - you'd almost have to diagram it. But for them, it's innate.

The entire focus of the GOP over the last 30 years, was to destroy the american worker. Now that the mission has been accomplished, why would they give a rats ass?

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

voters were too busy with their own lives to closely follow Congress.
The internet tubes have changed everything.
We need to target offenders like this and those who voted against Franken's contractor rape amendment and make sure their votes are common knowledge come election time.
Stick it right back in their faces with tv ads targeting the less informed television audience.

I am not worried as you see once the Health Care bill passes this party of Obstruction becomes the party of Irrelevance. They are to Stupid to see the will of the people and are condemning themselves to a 40-50 years of exile and I will be one that will SH*T and PISS on them when they whine and lie about the opposition.

You MORONS on the right have been played and your to STUPID to realize it. HAHAHAHA!

My prediction? They will pay for this.

Re-Thugs are classically obtuse when it comes to what is important to the American people. Remember Newty shutting down the federal government? This is much the same type of thing, on a smaller scale.
