Randall Terry

I suspect this move will make him more enemies than friends, since so many people watch the Super Bowl with their kids. Via Raw Story:

People in 40 cities across the country may be subjected to a graphic anti-abortion ad while watching the Super Bowl in February.

The ads are the brainchild of anti-abortion crusader Randall Terry, who founded Operation Rescue. The ads claim abortion is mass murder and show what is purported to be images of aborted fetuses.

He mounted a Democratic primary challenge against President Barack Obama to take advantage of a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) loophole that prevents campaign ads from being censored.

FCC-licensed TV stations can reject ads based on graphic content, but they are required by law to run the ads of federal candidates within the 45-day window of any primary election or caucus in a given state.

But the ads will only run in local markets. NBC is not required by law to air the ads.

Terry plans to air the ads in the 40 cities where he will be on the ballot against Obama in Democratic primaries or caucuses. He has already purchased air time for at least one ad.

Randall Terry's announcement that he will challenge Barack Obama in the Democratic primaries isn't being taken seriously, but to me, it's dangerous.

Here's an example of why:

“America has never truly debated child killing, because America has never truly seen child killing,” insisted Terry. “We will use FEC and FCC laws for federal candidates to bring America face to face with this massacre of the innocents.”

It's not the threat of using FEC and FCC laws. It's the "massacre of the innocents" language. This is a perfect example of how to stir up people who are already disturbed and incite them to violence.

In a different time and place, it wouldn't be quite so disturbing. But in today's world, we have Fox News and a myriad of print/internet outlets willing to pretend Terry is a serious contender. All he wants is the platform, and challenging the president in Democratic primaries gives that to him.

“Will I defeat Mr. Obama? I’m not delusional,” said Terry. “But while I may not defeat him, I can expose the genocide Obama promotes in America and around the world.

Terry added that his campaign had two goals which were creating “a crisis of conscience for Americans regarding the slaughter of the unborn and thereby hasten the end of legalized child killing” and attacking “President Obama’s agenda starting with child killing, but also including our battle against socialism, our enslavement to debt, and more.

Fighting words. Fire in a crowded room. Was there no lesson learned from the assassination of Dr. Tiller?

Just to make sure he gets as much attention as possible, he's planning to make his formal announcement in front of the Holocaust museum. No symbolism there, none at all.

I'm certain Terry will actually get some assistance from the Catholic Church and Southern Baptists, which means that the 2012 campaign just got more dangerous for the president. But Fox News will surely be more profitable, so there's that.

Here's a sample of Randall Terry quotes from the past. I'm sure we'll get some really great ones in 2012, too.

"I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over you... I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good... Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called by God, to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism."

"When I, or people like me, are running the country, you’d better flee, because we will find you, we will try you and we will execute you." ["reportedly said of doctors who perform abortions"]

Many of you may remember Randall Terry from his insane media appearances all through the Terry Schiavo affair back in 2005. He's from the lunatic fringe that tries to get rich off of the pro-life movement so he goes out of his way to act like a freak, but for John Boehner to meet with his crew is very telling indeed.

Right Wing Watch:

It is no secret that Randall Terry is an attention-seeking right-wing zealot, always on the lookout for ways to get his name in the press.

From burning effigies of Nancy Pelosi or Lindsey Graham to destroying Korans and protesting outside the school attended by President Obama's daughters, Terry is constantly working to draw attention to his cause ... mainly as a means to draw attention to himself.

And all of that self-aggrandizement occasionally pays off, as it helps Terry to secure meetings with incoming Speaker of the House John Boehner's Chief of Staff, as he revealed when he included this photo in a recent email alert:

And Terry apparently issued some big demands for Boehner and the Republicans now that they have taken control of the House - the complete end of abortion in America:

We must demand that Republicans who won the House of Representatives hasten the end of legalized child killing in America. Their victory could be a strong step forward for the babies, but it also might be yet another set back after 50,000,000 dead babies.

We must not delude ourselves! The landslide the Republicans enjoyed in the House of Reps was a repudiation of President Obama’s overall agenda; it was about the economy, about jobs, corporate bailouts, the debt, and about his health care bill.

Yet we already see pro-life fundraising letters and petitions heralding this GOP victory as an automatic victory for the babies’ lives. This is simply not true!

...

When the Republicans are in power, pro-life groups and leaders become way too “polite.” We lose our edge; we don’t hold them accountable; we settle for trite phrases and broken promises as long as they will meet with us for 10 minutes, and we can take our picture with them, or they come to one of our meetings and receive some useless award.

I beg you to carefully consider my words; look at this situation with prophetic insight. Unless the Republicans do something concrete to save babies from murder, then they are collaborators with child killers, and we must treat them as such.

We have Pro-Life DEMANDS for Mr. Boehner & House GOP

We Must Play Hard Ball: They Must Fear Pro-Lifers!

Let us not forget that he also wanted Dr. Tiller to be tried and executed:

Well, you had to figure this was coming:

The Justice Department on Friday opened an investigation into the killing of Kansas abortion provider George Tiller to see whether the accused gunman had accomplices.

The department will investigate possible federal crimes in connection with Dr. Tiller's slaying at his church on Sunday in Wichita. State prosecutors have already ruled out seeking the death penalty against the accused gunman, but federal prosecutors did not rule out doing so as they announced their own investigation.

"The Department of Justice will work tirelessly to determine the full involvement of any and all actors in this horrible crime," said Loretta King, head of the department's civil rights division.

Anyone who played a role in the killing, she said, will be prosecuted "to the full extent of federal law."

The sound of sphincters clenching from people like Randall Terry and Cheryl Sullenger could be heard for miles and miles.

You can read the text of the DOJ release here.

Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry, the most prominent anti-abortion activist in the country, appeared at the National Press Club today to defend his statement that slain Kansas physician Dr. George Tiller got what he deserved. People For the American Way was there with a camera.

Terry stunned his press club audience when he tried to deflect blame for the killing, which he referred to as a “setback for us on some levels”:

Terry: The point that must be emphasized over, and over, and over again: pro-life leaders and the pro-life movement are not responsible for George Tiller's death. George Tiller was a mass-murder and, horrifically, he reaped what he sowed.

Q: So who is responsible ... Terry: The man who shot him is responsible ...

Q: "... because that makes it sound like you were saying that he [Tiller] is responsible. Terry: The man who shot him is responsible.

Q: What did you mean by "he reaped what he sowed"?

Terry: He was a mass-murder. He sowed death. And then he reaped death in a horrifying way.

But here’s perhaps the most telling, and twisted, part of the whole spectacle. Terry, after referring to Tiller’s murder as a “teaching moment for what child-killing is really all about” and wrapping up the press conference, basically asked the crowd if someone wanted to buy him lunch:

Thank you for coming, unless there’s any other questions. [Off-Camera] And I truly am sorry that we had to meet under these circumstances. I like Guinness for those of you who want to have a beer somewhere. I prefer my chicken wings really hot and a little crispy.

The Far Right on the Assassination of Dr. George Tiller

grt04c_e2e54_0.jpg

Dr. George Tiller of Women's Health Care Services clinic in Wichita, Kansas was gunned down outside his church yesterday. Tiller had long been a top target of the anti-abortion movement because he performed medically necessary late-term abortions.

He faced down decades of harassment, threats and vandalism and went back to work after being shot in both arms by a radical “pro-life” activist in 1993. Just last month his clinic was severely damaged by vandals. Tiller probably suffered more than anyone else in recent decades to defend reproductive rights.

After news of the shooting broke, his antagonists came out to dance on his grave: Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, led protests against George Tiller's late-term abortion clinic in Wichita in 1991. Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue states,

"George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller's killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder.

"Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God. We must continue to expose them in our communities and peacefully protest them at their offices and homes, and yes, even their churches."

Other radical “pro-lifers” took to Twitter to gloat:

UPDATE... Doctor George Tiller was aborted today in his 204th trimester - aren't paybacks a bitch - Punch

oh HAPPY DAY! Tiller the baby killer is DEAD! - Samantha Pelch

George Tiller the baby killer was shot dead this morning. God bless the gunmen who hopefully won't be caught. - readnwatchchris, Creedmor. NC

And Frank Pavone of the so-called Priests for Life tried to muddy the waters and deflect blame for the killing:

I am saddened to hear of the killing of George Tiller. At this point, we do not know the motives of this act, or who is behind it, whether an angry post-abortive man or woman, or a misguided activist, or an enemy within the abortion industry, or a political enemy frustrated with the way Tiller has escaped prosecution. We should not jump to conclusions or rush to judgment.

Let us all remember that this tragedy comes just one month after O’Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh, and gang went ballistic over a Homeland Security report concerning the potential for violence by right-wing extremists.

(h/t Scarce for video)

Following the brutal slaying of Dr. George Tiller, Operation Rescue released this statement:

“We are shocked at this morning’s disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ.”

And now the group's leader, Randall Terry has released this Rally the troops video to all anti-choice advocates. In the above video he calls President Obama and pro-choice politicians child killers, and proclaims Dr. Tiller to be a mass murderer, who "reaped what he sowed," but voices regrets that the slain doctor wasn't able to "get things right with his maker" and that it was unfortunate that he didn't get a "trial of a jury of his peers and to have a proper execution."

This is one sick, twisted individual. To deny that hateful propaganda like this could incite someone to violence, is just plain dilusional.

Sean Hannity loves his analogies. First he opens his segment last night with an analogy comparing the Obama administration to the evil anti-Catholic plotters who are the chief villains of the new Tom Hanks movie, Angels and Demons. All this in the context of Obama's appearance at Notre Dame's commencement this weekend.

Then his guest, Randall Terry -- the man who brought us the Terri Schiavo fiasco -- comes on and tries some analogies of his own. First he compares the Obama appearance to Pope Benedict appearing before Planned Parenthood. Then, at the end of the segment, he goes one better -- Obama's like Hitler:

Can you imagine somebody saying, 'Let's have one of the leaders of Germany come in -- we don't really like what he did with that Jewish thing, but they build great roads, and they gave people hope, and they helped rebuild the economy.' It's crazy.

Yes, it's crazy indeed.

Mike's Blog Round Up

Good morning, scamps and scoundrels. I’m your round-up guest host for the week, Melissa McEwan, otherwise known as Shakespeare’s Sister (that’s a Smiths’ and Woolf reference, not an egregious bit of braggadocio, cheeky gits!), the bare-knuckled proprietress of Shakesville—a group blog absolutely chock-a-block with shameless purveyors of libertine feminism and the radical gay agenda. Buckle up; off we go…

Egalia over at Tennessee Guerilla Women knows she not the only dummy who expected the Dems to act like an opposition party.

The Heretik helpfully suggests they could try actually opposing something.

Peter at Right Wing Watch finds that professional a**hole Randall Terry is heartbroken by Pat Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani and his "hypocritical and seductive evil."

Amy at Incertus puts on her science geek cap to take a look at what brains are saying about the candidates.

Eric Hopp raises his voice once again in support of universal healthcare, in the wake of the news that the US is among the worst in the world for infant deaths.

Dave Neiwert provides space for Trefayne to take a stroll down Memory Lane and spend some time with Ron Paul's Congressional record.

Amanda finds one more reason for people in the Reality-Based Community to avoid seeing Bee Movie, if anyone still needed one.

And over at WIMN's Voices, the lovely Echidne takes a look at the alarming allegation that feminism killed the Neanderthals. We're so powerful, evidently, we can retroactively kill entire species! Mwah ha ha ha!

That’s all for today. Seeya tomorrow! If you’ve got any hot tips, email me at shakespeares_sister at comcast dot net.

O'Reilly and Malkin team up on Cindy Sheehan

Last night O'Reilly jumped onto Drudge's (the Eggman) bandwagon and started the assualt on Cindy.

Think Progress:

Bill: I think Mrs. Sheehan bears some responsibility for this [publicity] and also for the responsibility for the other American families who lost sons and daughters in Iraq who feel this kind of behavior borders on treasonous.

icon Download | play -(it's a big file so I compressed it a bit)

Michelle: I can’t imagine that Casey Sheehan would approve of such behavior

You gotta love it when Michelle puts words into Cindy's fallen son's mouth. You know Michelle we would all certainly love to ask Casey how he feels. Weren't you leading the charge on the Terri Schiavo case? Seems Randall Terry is your kinda guy. I guess he doesn't count as a nut in your book. I never did hear you apologize to Michael Schiavo.

As for the Michael Moore connection, I'm doing a little research on that now.

Newshounds has much more on the segment. "The Vacaville newspaper Tuesday dredged up its original story on the Sheehans and noted how the Drudge Report misused it. Referring to Sheehan's quote about the "gift of happiness" Bush gave them, Tuesday's story
in The Reporter said that, "Drudge included that quote in his Monday morning report, but didn't explain that it referred to sharing time with her family, not the president. O'Reilly repeated the misrepresentation."

The Rude One has his opinion about Cindy: "So often symbols of protest are created by the power of the opposition. Right now, Bush is making Cindy Sheehan into a more powerful figure than he could ever imagine."
