Yankees' Brendan Ryan Has New Back Injury, Scratched From Red Sox Game

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Brendan Ryan's back is keeping him out of yet another Yankees game. But the injury isn't where you'd think.

Ryan's suffering from upper-back spasms, according to the team. An lower-back injury, which Ryan said appeared to be his lumbar muscles, had kept him out the last 16 games.

Ryan was scheduled to start at shortstop for Thursday night's game against the Red Sox. Dean Anna took his place.

About a half-hour before the team's announcement, Girardi told reporters he expected Ryan to play about five innings.
