Donald Trump wasn’t sure just how YUUGE a flip flop he wants to do on immigration. Or he wasn't sure just how much he wanted to admit he's planning a YUUGE flip flop. So he polled Fox News’ Hannity show audience to help him figure it out. Seriously.
It started with host Sean Hannity asking whether maybe Donald Trump will reneg on his pledge to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants.
But, of course, Hannity wouldn’t phrase it any way that might make his beloved Trump look bad. So Hannity said delicately, “I think this is gonna be a big issue and that is, OK, you’re not a criminal alien, you committed no crimes but you didn’t respect our laws and sovereignty. You also seem to be indicating there might be something other than they have to go back.”
“We have to follow the laws of our country,” Trump said, as the audience cheered.
“That means they go back,” Hannity prodded.
That’s when Trump at least acted as if he’d have the audience figure it out for him.
From the Media Matters transcript, with my emphases:
TRUMP: We have to follow the laws. Now, can we be, and I’ll ask the audience, you have somebody who’s terrific, who’s been here—
HANNITY: 20 years.
TRUMP: Right, long time. Long court proceeding, long everything, okay? In other words, to get them out. Can we go through a process, or do you think they have to get out? Tell me. I mean, I don’t know. You tell me.
HANNITY: Well let me—let’s do a poll.
TRUMP: I’d like to know, I’d like to know.
HANNITY: How many think they should go through a process that maybe give ‘em a chance? Clap, we gotta hear you.
As it turned out, they couldn’t determine the winner so they did it again. That time, “Who doesn’t want them thrown out?” won.
“We are going to come up with a decision very soon,” Trump promised.
It’s obvious to me, a flip-flop is on the way.
