September 8, 2016

It was on this day, September 8th, in 1970 that the Jackson 5 released their 3rd album. Conveniently titled Third Album, the record spawned two hit singles. The first, I'll Be There, went to number one and this one, Mama's Pearl, reached number 5.

The songwriting team the Corporation had originally titled the song "Guess Who's Making Whoopie (With Your Girlfriend)" but the band's producer Deke Richards balked at the idea and had some lyrics and title changed to preserve the group's youthful, innocent image.

Please Note: The Music Club is also remembering Prince Buster, Jamaica's first international superstar, tonight in this post. Rest in peace and music, Prince Buster.
