Attorney General Merrick Garland held a short press conference today to discuss the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida residence.
Since the search was conducted, right-wing lawmakers and their media sycophants have been screaming bloody murder, claiming it was done for political purposes by a deep state conspiracy (with no proof) and attacking the entire FBI as political operatives out to get the ex-president.
"Just now the Justice Department has filed a motion in the southern district of Florida to unseal a search warrant and property receipt relating to a court-approved search that the FBI conducted earlier this week," Garland announced. "That search was a premises located in Florida belonging to the former president. The department did not make any public statements on the day of the search. The former president publicly confirmed the search that evening, as is his right."
"Copies of both the warrant and the FBI property receipt were provided on the day of the search to the former president's counsel, who was on site during the search. The search warrant was authorized by a federal court upon the required finding of probable cause," Garland stated.
Garland is calling Trump's bluff.
On Wednesday, NBC news tweeted out Trump's response to calls for him to make the warrant public: “No, we’re not releasing a copy of the warrant.”
The NY Post is using the NBC report to also say the Trump team will not make the contents public.
Trump was fine announcing that his home had been searched, but balks at the release of the warrant and receipt. It's almost like he is trying to scapegoat the DOJ to get ahead of the devastating contents of the warrant and receipt.
If the FBI acted recklessly and for political gain, why wouldn't Trump release the contents of the search warrant?
My guess is that it shines a bright light on the evidence a judge used to authorize the search of Mar-A-Lago. It destroys the QAnon narrative of a 'Deep State' attack against the Orange Julius by pedophiles.
The truth is not something that helps Trump or the MAGA cult.
Keeping them angry and foaming at the mouth does.
Now Garland has called their bluff. Will Trump object to unsealing the warrant and receipt?
Here's something else interesting: The Motion to Unseal is signed by Jay I. Bratt, Counterintelligence and Export Control Chief. That suggests that this DOJ search was specifically a counterintelligence operation.
Trump has until 3:00 PM Friday, August 12th to object. Will he?
