Kansas Republicans don’t worry about their constituents going hungry, only that they might get a few scraps of food they didn't earn!

The starve-the-seniors-bill made it out of the Republican-controlled Kansas state legislature on Thursday, in time for those Christians to celebrate Good Friday and Easter. Just what Jesus would have wanted, I’m sure.

The Kansas City Star has the deets on the GOP’s sustained efforts to make it harder for Americans to live:

The approval of the legislation, HB 2094, capped a two-year drive by Republicans to bolster work rules for government assistance, after lawmakers in 2022 raised work requirements on most able-bodied adults over [Democratic Gov. Laura] Kelly’s veto. This year’s bill expands those requirements to able-bodied adults ages 50 to 59 without children as a condition of aid from the Supplemental Food Assistance Program, once called food stamps.

The bill mandates older adults receiving food assistance must work at least 30 hours a week or join an employment and training program, similar to existing rules for younger recipients.

In fact, most adults receiving food assistance already work but in unstable jobs, often with low pay and inconsistent hours, the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found. “SNAP participation among non-disabled adults is often short term, but those who receive SNAP for longer periods still work most of the time,” the CBPP reported. Those who are “consistently out of work often face barriers to work or have caretaking responsibilities.” Most cited caretaking responsibilities or health conditions as the reasons.

The Republicans have designs on younger adults and kids, too. The new legislation also requires the Kansas Department for Children and Families to review a parent’s eligibility for childcare subsidies at regular intervals, The Kansas Star reported.

Gov. Kelly will probably veto the bill, The Star said, but it passed with almost veto-proof majorities in both chambers.

With their lust for more guns, less health insurance and forced births, it’s almost like Republicans like making more Americans die.
