Ever vigilant, Texas authorities have now outlawed backpacks for preschoolers and they will only be allowed to bring needed school items in a clear plastic baggie. And no, I'm not making this shit up.

The father of a child who was found with a handgun in their backpack at a San Antonio Pre-K was arrested by the San Antonio Police Department on Tuesday night, August 15, according to SAPD Sergeant Washington Moscoso.

Police arrested 35-year-old Pete Robles and charged him with a felony offense of child endangerment. The child was taking into the care of Child Protective Services. Investigation into the incident is ongoing and there could be additional charges and arrests made, according to Moscoso.

"This incident underscores the important collaboration between the school faculty and law enforcement personnel. Swift action was taken to address the situation and make an arrest. There are no current threats to the safety of the school or its students. To provide further assurance, SAPD will maintain an increased uniformed presence at the school for the foreseeable future," SAPD Chief William McManus said.

Mindful of the need to protect children and staff, Texas authorities leapt into action by banning backpacks.

"Effective immediately, we are pausing the use of backpacks in our schools," she said in the email sent to parents. "We know that young children sometimes bring items from home without understanding whether the item is potentially dangerous. This temporary restriction on the use of backpacks will allow us time to determine how best to proceed in the long term."

Starting on Wednesday, August 16, students will only be allowed to bring needed school items in a clear plastic baggie.
