More MAGAts are willing to sacrifice themselves on the foot of Trump's indictment altar. Good luck with that. They're going to end up finding themselves on the wrong side of the f**cked around and found out game if they're serious about any of this.
Here's MSNBC's Vaughn Hillyard interviewing Trump supporters in New Hampshire this week and the response two of them gave to what they'd do if Trump is convicted of any of the charges he's facing:
WOMAN: That's Nazi Germany Hitler. You can't silence your political opponents because you don't agree with them. […] Joe Biden should be in prison for his bribes.
MAN: The vote was stolen. I believe it, in my heart. […] Remember they blew up one of the election quarters where they kept all the dominion machines. Why'd that blow up?
HILLARD: If Donald Trump were to be found guilty by a jury, where do you see this going?
WOMAN: A civil war. Civil war. […] Divide it up, because we can't live together, obviously.
MAN: If he wants me to protect him, I'm going to go in there. I'm going to let him know that I'll do it.
Hillyard told the hosts of Morning Joe he was worried this was going to lead to some sort of "event." Well, we had one later that very day when a Utah man was shot and killed during an FBI raid on his home for threats against President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris, and several officials involved in prosecuting former President Donald Trump.
This is nothing new for Trump supporters who have been threatening civil war for some time now, as we saw after the FBI raid in Florida last year.
It hasn't happened yet and I tend to agree with Robert Reich who said it's never going to happen: There will be no civil war over Trump. Here’s why:
Once again, Trump is demanding that Americans choose sides. But in his deranged mind, this “final battle” is not just against his normal cast of ill-defined villains. It is between those who glorify him and those who detest him.It will be a final battle over … himself. [...]
Violence is possible, but there will be no civil war.
Nations don’t go to war over whether they like or hate specific leaders. They go to war over the ideologies, religions, racism, social classes or economic policies these leaders represent.
But Trump represents nothing other than his own grievance with a system that refused him a second term and is now beginning to hold him accountable for violating the law.
In addition, the guardrails that protected American democracy after the 2020 election – the courts, state election officials, the military, and the justice department – are stronger than before Trump tested them the first time.
Many of those who stormed the Capitol have been tried and convicted. Election-denying candidates were largely defeated in the 2022 midterms. The courts have adamantly backed federal prosecutors.
There's a lot of tough talk out there, but most of it is bluster. Sadly, all it takes is one idiot to follow through on the threats for someone to end up being hurt or killed, which we know is what Trump is hoping for. George Conway weighed in on this during Joy Reid's show Wednesday, and he's right about Trump's culpability.
