On July 23, former NFL quarterback and CBS football analyst Tony Romo got pinched for drunken driving under the influence after he refused to do a blood test.
After the incident, Romo went on Instagram and claimed ownership of the incident. He said that he had suffered back injuries during his playing days, which led to an addiction to pain medication. He also said that he ended up switching addictions from the pain meds to alcohol.
However, on September 1, Romo pleaded no contest. Not exactly taking ownership, but at least he didn't try to deny it. And because drinking in Wisconsin is considered an official pastime, Romo was sentenced to a $748 fine, lost his license for six months, and has to install ignition interlock systems in all his cars for one year from the time he gets his license back.
Probably the most painful consequence is that CBS Sports suspended him "until further notice." Another Wisconsinite, JJ Watts, will be taking his place in the announcers' booth.
While I didn't care for Romo as a player and even less as an announcer, I do sincerely wish him luck in his recovery efforts.
