In Wisconsin, Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany agreed to only one debate with his opponent, Democrat David Crowley. Tiffany said one debate would be enough to tell voters what they needed to know. That debate happened Thursday night.
One question captures how the debate went. The moderators pointed out that Tiffany had voted to overturn the 2020 election and asked him why. His answer was so mind-bogglingly stupid that it even stunned the moderators. First, he rambled on about socialism for a minute before saying he voted to overturn the election because of "Zuckerbucks," referring to a grant that Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and his wife, Priscilla Chan, gave to states to help them run the election during the COVID pandemic.
“One of the reasons that I did that is... 'Zuckerbucks,'” Tiffany said, using a term coined by critics of the money.
Tiffany accused Zuckerberg of trying to "privatize" our elections, saying that much of the money went to Democratic-leaning "blue cities," rather than spreading it throughout the state.
One of the moderators, Matt Smith, asked him again whether he said he voted to overturn the election because of the Zuckerbucks. Tiffany doubled down and pointed out that years later, voters approved a referendum to amend the state constitution to outlaw outside money in elections.
Tiffany's answer has more than a few problems.
In 2020, federal election officials agreed unanimously that the Zuckerberg grants were perfectly legal.
Secondly, by Tiffany's own admission, the referendum regarding outside money wasn't voted on until years later, so that is a moot point.
Thirdly, and this is the big one, the moderators asked Tiffany why he voted to overturn the 2020 elections. Tiffany immediately used the Zuckerbucks excuse and blamed an election clerk in Dane County who made a decision he disagreed with. Stunned by Tiffany's inane response, the moderators didn't notice that Tiffany started talking solely about Wisconsin. The Democrat Crowley also missed it and jumped on Tiffany's election denialism and said that made him untrustworthy.
But the thing is, Tiffany never voted to decertify Wisconsin's election. He signed off on a lawsuit in a Texas court challenging Wisconsin's election results, as well as those of three other states. He said he would vote to decertify Wisconsin's election. But he never actually voted to do it. Congress voted only to decertify Pennsylvania's and Arizona's election results, but it never voted on Wisconsin.
In the past six years, Tiffany has also given different reasons for why he wanted to decertify the election, but one thing has stayed consistent all that time. He's always been Trump's little bitch and has done whatever Trump wants him to do. That alone should disqualify him from holding any office.
