Up with Chris Hayes, January 28, 2012, h/t Heather at VideoCafe

Actually, there's one scheduled guest on the list that won't actually be showing up: Rick Santorum. It was announced late last night that Santorum's three year old daughter, Bella, who was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and not expected to live a year, has been admitted into the hospital. There's nothing snarky about this: I hope that Bella Santorum gets better soon. I can say this because I'm an empathetic person and know there is little more painful than seeing your child ill and being unable to do anything. But there's a serious lack of empathy in today's political discussions, and frankly, I blame Republicans. The glorification of the wealthy, the veneration of selfishness, the disdain of societal responsibilities, it all sounds like an Ayn Rand heaven, but it makes for a damn poor country. I'll be participating on panel with my friend Nicole Sandler and others on Jacob Dean's "Filter Free Radio" this Monday at 7pm Eastern, and we'll be discussing women and politics. I feel like we could be in much better shape as a country if we could focus on empathy and other feminine qualities. But until then, we get to suffer the rich, pasty white men of the Republican Party, since that's basically all that ever gets booked on Sundays.
