This Week with George Stephanopoulos marks the passings of nine service members:
US Army CPT Aaron D Istre, 37, Vinton, LA
US Army SGT Daniel J Brown, 27, Jerome, ID
US Army SGT William R Wilson III, 27, Getzville, NY
US Marines Sgt Joseph D’Augustine, 29, Waldwick, NJ
US Air Force Capt. Francis D Imlay, 31, Vacaville, CA
US Army PFC Johnathon F Davis, 20, Griffin, GA
US Marines Cpl Roberto Cazarez, 24, Harbor City, CA
US Army SPC David W Taylor, 20, Dixon, KY
As well as a special recognition of US Army SGT Dennis P Weichel Jr, 29, Providence, RI
I generally offer up the list of fallen service members without comment, but with all due respect to Sgt Weichel's family, while his sacrifice was heroic (note that the gender of the child he saved is different in the two linked stories) and by no means undeserving of the accolades given to him, it feels a little manipulative of ABC to give him this special recognition. I suspect it has as much to do with the bad press Sgt. Bales' actions have caused for our continuing presence in Afghanistan. To date, 2,943 allied service members have been killed in Afghanistan.
Other notable names who lost their lives this week include feminist and poet Adrienne Rich, bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs, author Harry Crews and runner Micah True.
