I would like to end my day thinking of Lady Bird Johnson. I loved this woman because she knew that beauty was food for the soul. When I heard of her illness I seemed to know that her time was short and I grieved as if she were a family member. She will always be remembered as one of the greatest First Ladies of our country.
Good night dear woman. May the beauty you brought to this country continue to inspire future generations.

U.S. intel warns al-Qaida has rebuilt

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded al-Qaida has rebuilt its operating capability to a level not seen since just before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, The Associated Press has learned.

The conclusion suggests that the network that launched the most devastating terror attack on the United States has been able to regroup along the Afghan-Pakistani border despite nearly six years of bombings, war and other tactics aimed at crippling it.

Still, numerous government officials say they know of no specific, credible threat of a new attack on U.S. soil.

In George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Two Minutes Hate (alternatively two minute hate) is a daily period in which Party members of the society of Oceania must watch a film depicting The Party's enemies (notably Emmanuel Goldstein (or Bin Laden) and his followers) and express their hatred for them and the principles of democracy.

With each day, the Bush presidency more and more resembles the disgraced tenure of Richard Nixon. This past week alone brought dubious assertions of executive privilege, new revelations of domestic surveillance and civil rights violations, similarly dismal poll ratings and even a presidential pardon. And now, it seems, the disturbing Nixon-Bush parallels extend to the revisionist history of their presidential libraries.

For the disturbing look at history repeating, see:

My friend works at the Federal Building in Los Angeles and he says that over the last couple weeks the Navy has been practicing extraction drills from the rooftops of buildings. It is chilling to think about this, but it makes me think of those last moments in Saigon when they were pulling the last people out before the South "fell." Maybe the Navy has even less faith in the "surge" than Congress does.

Ebert should stick with his day job. That wasn't very good.

Matthews loves this, and so does MSNBC. Matthews' ratings are miniscule when you consider how many people COULD be watching, yet he get tons of publicity when he does something like invite Coulter on the show. You know Roger Ebert wasn't watching Chris Matthews' show when Coulter was on, like most of the rest of us weren't watching. He saw it on then net, like everyone else did. MSNBC undoubtedly gets some money for that clip. Matthews didn't do what he did for the audience that was going to be watching the actual broadcast, he did it for the millions more who would watch it online. Same with Michael Moore on Wolf Blitzer's show. Moore knew he would get more publicity for his movie if he Played a confrontational role and the video went online.

Everyone learned from Jon Stewart. His appearance on Crossfire was seen by few people when it aired on CNN, but set it the net on fire and was viewed millions of times online and generated a huge buzz. It's all about the viral video these days.

Lady Bird Johnson made me a gardener. When I was growing up, people planted a few marigolds and called it a garden. When Lady Bird started the highway program, people across the country realized they could plant native flowers, trees and bushes which would brighten up their lives. I started seeing flowers planted in towns along Main Streets and along highway dividers. When I saw a previously dull Main Street sporting colorful flowerboxes, I decided to make some flowerboxes of my own and place them on my urban fire escape. People in the neighborhood told me they could see my 'garden' from their apartment windows and they appreciated it. Then I bought a house. My front porch flowerboxes expanded to windowboxes, then to small patches of land laboriously dug out by moi. Today I enjoy honeybees, bumblebees, hummingbirds, butterflies and beautiful songbirds which are attracted to my plants. My yard is green (bird poop makes good fertilizer) and I listen to the sound of birds even in the winter, since I've planted native plants which have berries and seedheads in autumn and winter to feed birds when food is scarce elsewhere.

I never would have done any of these things if Ladybird Johnson hadn't worked so tirelessly to sway highway departments and businesses to introduce Americans to the beauty of their nation's flora.

Hmmm... wait a second.... I guess this means I have Ladybird Johnson to blame for my arthritis ;)

Wow wren, that was sweet. I just bought my first house a few years ago. I'm in the hanging baskets and giant clay pots on the porch stage. The roses that were here when I moved in have me cafuddled...as do the fruit trees, how do you treat cherry trees for that weird rusty crud without killing bees, birds and yourself? And I must say, there's a nice little patch of yard that's crying out for veggies... emmm, eggplant...roasted with garlic and balsamic vinegar.

“The Bush administration made plans for war and for Iraq’s oil before the 9/11 attacks, sparking a policy battle between neo-cons and Big Oil,” reported Greg Palast back in March, 2005. “The industry-favored plan was pushed aside by a secret plan, drafted just before the invasion in 2003, which called for the sell-off of all of Iraq’s oil fields…. The sell-off was given the green light in a secret meeting in London headed by Mr. Chalabi shortly after the US entered Baghdad, according to Robert Ebel. Mr. Ebel, a former Energy and CIA oil analyst, now a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, told Newsnight he flew to the London meeting at the request of the State Department.”

2 things:
1) Ebert just posted the transcription. Didn't he have anything to say on the subject?

2) There's a special place in hell for people like ann coulter. I really really really look forward to her being able to get checked in.

If that conversation actually did take place, it's the most vile thing I have heard of being put on TV.

Is he masochist with a thing for smelly she-males or is he completely devoid of any integrity as a man? Perhaps both.

LBJ was a war criminal.

Claudia Taylor Bird was a fine person, the plain daughter of a man rich enough to get Lyndon out of W. Texas.

He betrayed her constantly.

"In later years, when more details of her husband's sexual affairs emerged, she would sometimes be asked about them. She finally evolved a stock reply: 'Lyndon loved people,' she would say. 'It would be unnatural for him to withhold love from half the people.' And the reply was always delivered with a smile." (Caro, Master of the Senate, p. 654)

The most famous longterm affair was with Helen Gahagan Douglas, about whom was said: "She was ten of the twelve most beautiful women in America."

However, his sexual exploits are moot to his illegitimacy as a President. The war in Vietnam, and Korea, made his sponsor Brown (of Brown & Root) A TON OF MONEY.

LBJ, Dick Cheney...same kind of sponsored war criminal.

Vietnam, Iraq, same kind of profiteering on the deaths of millions of innocent people. This CANNOT be decocted with some conscience-salving Great Society effort to produce ANY forgiveness for his crimes, or the current crony conspirators. LBJ was no better than Bush, the same sort of mass-murderer.

Fairwell, Ladybird. You were a First Lady, unlike Barbara or Laura Bush. As the wives of hateful men, you alone made America Beautiful.

mo_dems @ 19,

Thank you for that link! To watch an actual, candid interview with the Oval Office Orangutan is quite unsettling.

It seemed clear to me that the reason Bush was so insistent that he not be interrupted was that he had several stock paragraphs memorized, used them whether they answered the question or not, and even an appropriately interjected follow-up threatened to derail him altogether. He's a petulant little boy king with a developmentally stunted brain seriously ill-equipped even to ponder the global arena in his charge.

Sure, we all know that already, but to see this kind of an interview, conducted by a non-American journalist for a non-American television station reveals it acutely and painfully. I would recommend that everyone watch it.

Peter Gaffney's picture

Ebert's heart is in the right place (figuratively-speaking; the actual whereabouts of the physical organ is a subject I leave to his cardiologists), but as parodies go this one didn't strike me as all that funny or spot-on. I miss aspects of Coulter's M.O. like the way she'll totally misrepresent her critics to make it look like it's her right to free speech they're attacking (Elizabeth Edwards: "Please stop making vicious personal slurs" -- Coulter: "Elizabeth Edwards wants me to stop writing entirely... No, I won't do it!") or the impunity with which she offers her revisionist history ("During the entire 2004 election neither the New York Times, nor the Washington Post, nor Time, nor Newsweek printed a single article critical of John Kerry!").

In fairness to Ebert, though, this may simply be a case of the original being too outrageous for the parodist to exaggerate -- how could anyone top the tastelessness, the vulgarity, the sheer meanness of Coulter's bit about Edwards' "Ask me about the tragic death of my son" bumper stickers (not to mention the brilliance of her defense: "That was three years ago" -- no one could argue with that!)?

As for Chris Matthews' bizarre half-teasing, half-fawning treatment of Coulter -- I found it simply mystifying. One minute he'd be heaping praise on her intelligence and writing skill (imagine celebrating the wit of someone whose most famous recent jibes have involved calling people fags and homos); the next he'd half-heartedly go on the offensive, trying to elicit some admission, the purported significance of which he never got around to explaining. "I just wanted to hear you say that," he'd conclude before changing the subject or tossing to commercial. And then there was the way he kept declaring "She sells books," as if that trumped any negative criticism. (It just occurred to me what Matthews' Coulter interview reminded me of, in a very indirect sort of way -- Tom Snyder interviewing Charlie Manson.)

Karen,

I don't disagree with you. Bush is a horrible speaker and gives terrible personal interviews, but this journalist was rude in her continuous interruptions. Sure, he gave his usual pat answers, but the questions she asked him were the usual pat questions too. Even Bill Clinton, arguably one of the best speakers of our generation, would've been frustrated by an interviewer like that who kept interrupting him in the same manner. By the third or fourth interruption by this lazy, I wouldn't have been surprised if W had blown up on her like Clinton did in the Chris Wallace interview last summer.
Almost inexcusable on her part, highly disrespectful, and embarrassing to the country of Ireland, even if she does hate the guy.

Eva Braun didn't fuel the Nazi's but she fucked the boss and kept a smile on his face while he sacrificed American GIs and German soldiers.

She knew her husband had a hand in the assassination of Kennedy and its cover-up in stacked Warren Commission. While Johnson didn't pull the triggers, he helped put the chess pieces into position. Not to mention the cover-up of the USS Liberty incident, and the 58,000 Americans killed in Vietnam (and nearly 3 million Vietnamese) on a manufactured false-flag in the Gulf of Tonkin.

I say good riddance. Those flowers you planted Lady Bird, were splattered with blood.

The general consensus that I share with what seems like many others at this point is that the Navy's sending the super old and super famous Enterprise to join the others off the coast of Iran is troubling. The carrier was due for decommissioning so when many others are available for the same mission I'm sure you can see the possibilities, shudder the thought. Shrub wants to expand into Iran in the worst way and so it is not a stretch to picture the carrier being used like another Pentagon or WTC, as though it was another 9-11. I hope this is not the case, however it all seems odd in all ways to me. Does that suspicion hold water with any of you?

http://www.tomflocco.com/Docs/63/BushJfkBookDepo.htm

41 had his hand into the Bay of Pigs, Operation Northwoods, Oliver North, etc.

honesty's picture

Ah what I forgot to add was the important part. JFK would not authorize Operation Northwoods that the Joint Chiefs insisted on and this is thought to be the reason and it was Shrub 41 in the CIA who was there before JFK and long after.

Karen @ 41:

mo_dems @ 19,

I think I've seen this interview before, it isn't recent. But speaking as someone who is more used to a European interview style and completely appalled by the slugfests that pose as interviews that I've seen on other links posted on-line, Ms Coleman was not any more rude, disrespectful or aggressive than the vast majority of other UK (and Irish) interviewers with UK (and Irish) politicians. For any politician to assume they should be allowed to control an interview to the extent that Bush obviously demanded is high disrespectful and embarrassing, both to the journalists and their viewers - it then stops being an 'interview' and becomes nothing more than a speech with someone else obediently supplying the subject headings.

I doubt seriously that anyone as articulate and skilled at handling interviews as Clinton would have had to resort to the hamfisted manner in which Bush bludgeoned Ms Coleman into silence and submission - the mark of a real politician is how well he handles real questions, being asked by real people, not pre-approved questions asked by sycophantic toadies. If Bush can't handle a soft-spoken Irishwoman like Ms Coleman, he'd have no chance at all handling a Jeremy Paxman type interview - something I'd love to see Clinton take on. Now that would be good tellie!

Have you guys seen this? Bush interviewed in Ireland.

The clip on this appears to be broken, so I found it on YouTube, but the commentary about what happened to this journalist is well worth reading. So, first go to mo dem's link and read, then go here, and watch. If you can stand it. This man is evil incarnate. You can see it here. God, this makes me hate him even more.

I thought it was a real transcript too for a moment.

dennis's picture

Nonny,
Her attitude was "I don't like your answers, I've heard that before, so I'm going to interrupt you, you piece of shit. What, don't like it, here I'll do it again till I get the answer I want. Just who do you think you are Mr. President?".

In my book, that's rude. Not as rude as Annie Liebovitz telling the Queen of England to take off her crown for a photoshoot, but rude nonetheless.

Sad to see the "other" LBJ go. I happen to live near Lady Bird Johnson Grove, a beautiful and aptly-dedicated place that every out-of-town visitor gets taken to. I'll probably take a trip up in her honor now.

I found some nice large VR panoramas of the place, for those who don't live quite so close:

Thanks for the nice reminder, for I too visited the LBJ Grove in the Redwood Forest last year when
making a trip along the West Coast. But, not to out-do you, I reside in Austin and within 2 miles of
my home is Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Gardens and Park...It too is an outstanding flora park; the land being dedicated/given to our City by Ms. Johnson and a wonderful place to go and remember her
in a gorgeous and beautiful surrounding.

But my father (who died way back in 1984) felt that Johnson really had something to do with the murder of Kennedy. And I know he did not like Johnson in any way. What are some of the reasons people think that this is the case?

Kennedy was shot in texas, Johnson's home state.

Texas also turns out to be the home state of the elder boosh. Who knew?

When GAY Republican pedofile Mark Foley was caught with his "pants down" like Vitter, the GOP "Ministry of Propaganda" said, "Mark, hands off the 'talking to GOD strategy...YOU'RE GAY, so you have to use the GOP/alcohol rehab strategy." Gay Republicans are not allowed to use the "talking to GOD" strategy...they must employ the "alcohol rehab" excuse.

Pete, he has painted a script (fictitious) where she plays the coy, demur vixen, while spewing offensive speech, at anything anybody asked of her. This included her own mother. The picture it paints is one of someone being really hateful while their body language says "Is it lunch time yet?" It is hard to believe she really cares or believes anything she is saying. He was booked into Brevard County Jail in Sharpes. The charge is a second-degree misdemeanor, according to police. He posted the $500 bond and was released just before 10 p.m. from the Brevard County Jail in Sharpes."

Speaking as someone who tries not to make sense, I think what ann said makes no sense. And neither does our economy. Our unemployment reports don't count those who are out of unemployment insurance, although they still could be without a job. They don't count the illegal population, but whenever an illegal gets a new job it's counted as a job hire. Their presence depress wages for those on the lower end of the scale and raise housing costs. The reports also count temporary hires who face all kinds of humiliation, and no health benefits. Most jobs don't offer health benefits, and they have been told by courts that they don't always have to pay into their employees pension funds. Mainstreet businesses are being killed by the Wallstreet competitors, who once they dominate can and will charge what they want, and pay what they want without the Invisible Hand of the Economy saying, "Wait a minute." The reports cite our economic strength but don't factor in the cost of war and rebuilding. They're spread out over several reports such as Wallstreet and durable goods, farm and no farm hiring.Technically we're not in inflation since that comes from moves of Federal Reserves and their adjustments to the prime lending rate. However, the cost of living continues to go up with the cost of fuel. Additionally, we're facing a possible S/L crisis due to over-emphasis of sub-prime lending loans.

ann's always flipping her hair so much like a brain dead 15 year old Valley Girl, I hope she gets whiplash.

A dispute over a backyard wall in Whatcom County has reached all the way to the White House, with President Bush firing International Boundary Commissioner Dennis Schornack over his handling of the matter.

But on Wednesday Schornack rejected his dismissal by the commander-in-chief.

In a strongly worded letter to Bush, Schornack said the International Boundary Commission (IBC) is an independent, international organization outside the U.S. government's jurisdiction. Schornack wrote that according to the 1908 treaty that created the IBC, a vacancy can only be created by "the death, resignation or other disability" of a commissioner.

Nobel laureate calls for removal of Bush

Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams came from Ireland to Texas to declare that President Bush should be impeached.

"Right now, I could kill George Bush," she said at the Adam's Mark Hotel and Conference Center in Dallas.

Peace activists, very likely still seething at Ann Coulter's satirical remarks toward John Edwards, cheer wildly and give this woman a standing ovation for a death threat on the President of the United States.

Oh the irony. No doubt she's just elevated herself to hero status from the left.

I understand that they have these things prepared beforehand... but it just seemed ghoulish how quickly this polished, edited piece was onscreen.
