giuliani2.jpgbilde.jpg Via Telegram.com:

Republican presidential candidate Rudolph W. Giuliani has close ties to a Catholic priest accused of sexually molesting boys and who also was the lawyer for a now-closed Whitinsville counseling house for troubled priests that has been described as the center of a pedophile sex ring.

Monsignor Alan J. Placa, who works for Mr. Giuliani's consulting firm, Giuliani Partners, was legal adviser in the 1980s to the House of Affirmation, where priests accused of sexual abuse were sent for psychotherapy and other counseling services. The center closed in 1987 amid a financial scandal.

Monsignor Placa, who while an active priest arranged the annulment of Mr. Giuliani's first marriage, baptized his two children and officiated at the funeral of his mother, is a childhood friend of Mr. Giuliani and they both attended Manhattanville College.

He was stripped of his duties as a priest, but not defrocked, after Newsday, a Long Island newspaper, published a story in 2002 about young men who alleged that Monsignor Placa abused them in the 1970s. He has been on administrative leave since and has worked for Mr. Giuliani for the past five years. Read on...

God, I never though I'd find a candidate worse than Bush until I saw the republican presidential hopefuls. They are all insane, grossly incompetent, or both. The only person with half a mind on that side is Ron Paul but he's pretty extreme.

Heehee. Sums up Rudy.

But the right is so desperate to remain in control in the White House they'd elect a serial killer as long as he's an actor or a pseudo-hero. They are the party of values.

Giuliani shouldn't be blamed for the crimes of one of his friends. Don't get me wrong, I think Giuliani is an idiot and a liar, but that doesn't mean he should be blamed for the faults of one of his friends. It's the same kind of shit Republicans pulled against Clinton. The fact that Clinton got a blowjob from an intern has nothing to do with how great of a president he was. Likewise, the fact that Giuliani has a friend with serious faults doesn't have any bearing on how crappy of a candidate he is.

You're saying he should denounce his friend to get "the respect of the american people an heave himself up the political ladder"? Basically, you want him to ditch a childhood friend just so he can get enough votes to win an election. I don't want a president who pulls shit like that just to move up in the polls. The thing with Rudy is there is no there there. He was lucky enough to be the mayor when 9-11 happened but that does not make him Presidential material. He was no good before and what has he done since? Made speeches. That’s it.
Get over him. He could be likeable to a lot of people but his judgment sucks. Look where he places the headquarters for the whatever. In the World Trade Center. That was stupid. And the radio thing? Fair enough. Heck, Paul Shanley (one of the major perv priests, he was at the founding of NAMBLA) worked at one Church-related charity my own grandparents had financially supported. That doesn't mean my grandparents had "close ties" with molesters.

There's more than enough legitimate stuff to hang Rudy by. Read Kevin Baker's cover story in the current Harper's.

This is a "touchy" one. I am no friend of Rudy but if this simply boils down to being loyal to a friend...even I would have to respect that. So many are quick to judge and few are given to loving their enemies or being loyal to their friends. For now, on this one, I will give Rudy the benefit of the doubt. Rudy's behavior might be honorable here...I respect friendships...we all have had friends who have made mistakes. Usually everyone abandons them...except the few true friends. A friend in need is a friend indeed! I say withhold judgment…honor may be the proper response.

You don't choose your uncle. Now if you choose your uncle to be a friend, when you know he treats other living beings in particularly heinous ways-it IS on you.
People that live a lie with no concern for the feelings of others aren't 'friends' They can't be. So if you know someone like this, and you had no idea, because they lied, lived a lie-sought out work that would give them cover and protection-they are sociopaths-and they don't have friends..

When you find out your 'friend' for decades hid this from you (lying by omission), you leave them. Just like you did with your uncle. Why? You might have been their friend, but they were, and never will be, your friend. They're incapable. It's a sociopath's trait.

I've got a question: This scumbag was apparently relieved of his priestly duties by was not defrocked, which means he's still a priest, no? So this money he rakes in, presumably legal fees, since he's a lawyer, from working for Giuliani and Accomplices - uh, I mean Partners, is tax free, since he's still a member of the Church. That's a sweet deal, he's got. Maybe I've misread the article, but perhaps someone could comment on my observation.

More about this meddlesome priest from the Village Voice

No Wafer for Rudy
Giuliani campaigns as a Catholic, but he's on the outs with God
by Wayne Barrett
June 26th, 2007 5:24 PM

---snip---
Twenty-five years ago, Giuliani, 38, the youngest associate attorney general in Justice Department history, was assiduously strategizing with his closest friend, Monsignor Alan Placa, about ways to annul his first marriage. He'd already divorced his wife, Regina Peruggi. But the politically ambitious Giuliani, who almost never went to Mass, was nonetheless determined to get the church to bless the dissolution of his 14-year marriage.

Placa had actually dated Peruggi himself in high school and was a seminarian when he served as best man at Giuliani's 1968 wedding. Now, in 1982, the well-connected monsignor with a law degree had come up with a way to cancel it. Since Peruggi and Giuliani were second cousins, Placa concluded, they were supposed to have obtained a dispensation from the church before marrying. Their failure to get one was grounds for a retroactive annulment.

This was ironic, because it was Placa himself who had advised the couple before the wedding that they didn't need a dispensation. At least that was the recollection of Giuliani's mother Helen in a taped interview. Helen says that Peruggi was offended by the annulment, and adds that her former daughter-in-law "went to diocesan headquarters to fight it."

By all indications, the Catholic Church under Pope Benedict XVI is going to playing a much more aggressive role in politics in the U.S. and around the world. Benedict's denial of communion to pro-choice politicians, his reinvigoration of pre-Vatican II rites and his inflammatory critique of Islam suggest Americans will be seeing a much higher, more muscular - and more conservative - profile from the Church. But as the news of the $660 million settlement in the Los Angeles clergy sex abuse scandal suggests, the Church in the United States would do well to look within and focus on repentance, not politics.

For the details, see:
"Repentance Not Politics: After the L.A. Archdiocese Settlement."

Save the Emo-Cons! Save the Emo-Cons! Call to Action! Save the Emo-Cons!

"Liberals hate conservatives! Liberals hate America! Liberals Hate Whorporate America!"

Do you honestly think you're convincing anyone that you're the victims of bigotry with that rubbish? Here's your reality check, observer. Rational hate of obsolete, irrational conservative policies (and no, you are not an magical, automatic default, so get over yourself) promotes change. So let's be honest, all you're really after is keeping society from becoming a place where you don't get to be a parasite anymore.

Here's your tip: You're finished. Get over it.

Another piece in the puzzle as to why Rudy like to play "big girl" and wear dresses perhaps?

freejack's picture

To those defending Giuliani ‘choice of friends’ and ragging on C&L for posting this:

Get a fuckin grip on reality.

Giuliani made Kerick Commissioner of the NYPD.
Giuliani hired Alan Placa after the Catholic church kicked his perv ass to the curb.

If Giuliani were elected president who’s he gonna make Secretary of State?

Who’s he gonna put in charge over at DOD?

This is VERY relevant!!

moktar's picture

I wouldn't be suprised if it ever turned out that Guiliani was involved in something similar after learning about the franklin coverup. Senators/politicians/scum are worst than fucking caligula.

more like Ghouliani!

Rudy is a scumbag - in his personal life and his professional life. The post just shines a light on one of the MANY facets of Rudy being a scumbag... a successful scumbag, but scum none the less...

Paul's picture

Why would it not surprise me to learn that Rudy was into ritualistic child abuse?

TDoff's picture

Geez, Rudy's locked up with the Mafia and the Catholic Pedophiles.

If he just joined the Crazy-Christian-Evangelical-Fundamentalist-Rapture-Freaks, and converted to NeoCon-Zionist Judaism, he'd have the election wrapped up.

Now THAT'D be a family-value administration.

Are there any major white criminals on the East coast Ghouliani doesn't have close personal ties with. This man must be stopped.

BaScOmBe's picture

And here it is I thought he was just a liar, racist, criminal-coddler, wife-abuser, war-monger, fear-monger, hypocrite and republiscum.

Boy! Was I wrong!

Rudy was the priests favorite love interest.

Echoing earlier comments, this doesn't seem to be particularly valid.

Bringing up stuff regarding Vitter is completely justified, considering his
"family values"-jargon and the fact that he was personally responsible for his own actions. He deserves any scorn coming his way.

Rudy deserves scorn for his policies, his poor judgement before and after 9/11, but not for this sort of thing. This is the sort of crappy partisan "reporting" that I see heralded on sights like Huffington Post (and regularly on Fox News.) I expect more from C&L.

Sorry! I disagree!

Rudy looks more like Gollum!

Hey, i hate child molesting priests about as much as i hate Giuliani - but we can't start going after people because of crap like this. First, it's a logical fallacy to judge someone by who they know. Second, everybody knows a lot of douchebags, it's not like our side doesn't have it's share of people with questionable moral character. Lastly, we are supposed to be the side with some sense - and, as a student of criminology, we need to allow people BACK in our society after committing a crime, we need to allow them to reform and become productive members of society - and that INCLUDES molester priests. We're supposed to be the party and people with compassion and the intelligence to look beyond flaws and emotions and act with logic, not attack someone based on their friends.

Besides, there are a lot of reasons to hate that snaggle-toothed douche without falling prey to logical fallacy - off the top of my head, how about his mishandling of September 11th? I wish someone would ask him why if he is such a great leader, the NYPD salaries were a joke while he was mayor, and are STILL among the lowest in the nation.

emi's right it was Manhattan College not Manhattanville. Sloppy journalism. BTW: Manhattan College is where Father Bruce Ritter founder of Covenant House in NYC and known pederast enconsed is favorite boys.

Manhattan had quite the reputation in the 70s, 80s and 90s

Andrew's picture

You are missing the point, Giuliani supporters. Giuliani stands by this priest 100%, even though 4 children came forward detailing how they were abused by Placa during their childhood; yet Rudy continues to deny that Placa every did anything wrong.
Placa works for Giuliani Partners, inc.
Why?
Giuliani got rid of Kerik as soon as allegations against him surfaced. Why keep Placa? Oh yeah, I forgot. Placa helped Giuliani annul his marriage to his cousin Regina Peruggi. It all makes sense now.

Andrew's picture

One reader argued that because Placa has not been convicted, he's innocent. Wrong. The reason why he cant be convicted is because the statute of limitations expired, meaning that even if Placa is proven to have molested these kids, it happend so long ago that the law keeps him from being locked up. The Suffolk District Attorney had overwhelming evidence against him, including hte testimony of four adults who were close to Placa during their childhood.
Giuliani has no morals.

Cufford's picture

I agree. This kind of cheap, sleezy, guilty-by-association, tabloid style hit piece is fitting of what they do on the Right, and I hate to see it from our side.

Now if Rudy had been caught participating in anything, that would be a different story. Otherwise this is a bottom-feeding kind of stuff.

Dave's picture

Placa was Dean of Students at St Pius X while Sean Hannity was a student there.

And you'd think that Fixed Noise would make use of his inside knowledge...

C'mon, Rudy has so many REAL things to be criticized for, why the FAUX NEWS piece? Seriously. Real news please.

And not a bad one of the perv priest. He looks like he's just seen the new altar boy.

Kinny's picture

I agree with M-dog, Guliani is a opertunist asshole, but he's not condoning child molestation. If our goal is to change the quality of the media spin cycle, we need to stay away stretchy smears.
The left has a real opertunity to pull some folks from the middle who are tired of the right wing continuing to lower the bar for our political discourse, and this kinda shit is not going to help the cause.

I think Giuliani went to Manhattan College, not Manhanville.

He did go to Manhattan College, but I guess even they don't want him anymore!
