Yes folks---as 9/11 approaches, expect more and more of these odious op-eds to be written.

Funny how he fails to point out that America was unified until we were lied to repeatedly by this administration which used charlatans as witnesses.  And all the war hawks in our media propped up as much terror as they could articulate so that the country feared a nuclear attack by Saddam more than life itself and we just had no choice but to invade a country that never attacked us. The right wing blogs try to perpetuate this fear every chance they get and like Malkin, they get upset when a bridge collapses in Minesota and the government quickly rules out terrorism....And so it goes...

America's fabric is pulling apart like a cheap sweater.

What would sew us back together?

Another 9/11 attack.

The Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Rushmore. Chicago's Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia subway system. The U.S. is a target-rich environment for al Qaeda.

Is there any doubt they are planning to hit us again?

If it is to be, then let it be. It will take another attack on the homeland to quell the chattering of chipmunks and to restore America's righteous rage and singular purpose to prevail.

He misses the unity Osama's attack instilled in our land and what better way to regain those warm and fuzzy jingoistic feelings highlighted by American flags being sold at twenty bucks a pop on street corners like Hollywood Star maps so we could hoist them on our cars. Those were the days. I wonder if Stu will volunteer to be the first person killed in an attack so that in his mind his death will serve the purpose he so longs for...stubyko@phillynews.com (be gentle) I'm sure Will Bunch can't be thrilled right now...(h/t Brady)

Dear Stu,

You have a column in a Philadelphia paper, and you are capable of writing "A bastard so sick of how splintered we are politically - thanks mainly to our ineptitude in Iraq - that we have forgotten who the enemy is" without some kind of sentence-construction alarm going off?

Do you think Americans are perhaps sick of the war because it was based on false pretenses, fought with Katrina-like incompetence, and has in fact made us far less safe than we were before we eliminated Iran's arch-enemy and supplied Al Qaeda with a new breeding ground, complete with a large percentage of the Earth's remaining oil and a major population of Jews within easy driving distance?

No, of course you don't think that. You're the guy who forgot what the first half of a sentence said by the time you'd gotten to the second half. You've long since forgotten anything that happened before breakfast.

Stay well. I teach ESL, by the way, if you would like to contact me about rates.

Hell, he offered suggestions to the terrorists: "The Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Rushmore. Chicago’s Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia subway system."

Considering Al Qaeda has been traditionally fixated on New York City and D.C., I would say this prick is actually trying to help the terrorists find a good target.

Byko writes: "It is not Bush and it is not Hillary and it is not Daily Kos or Bill O'Reilly or Giuliani or Barack. It is global terrorists who use Islam to justify their hideous sins, including blowing up women and children." Never noting that it is the Bush Admin who use the fear of such terrorist acts to divide Americans - and the rest of the world for that matter - into a "with us or with the terrorist" simplistic dichotomy. Byko asks, "What will sew us back together?" Another 9/11 we don't need. We need better leadership.

I've been saying for a while that Bush has nobody to blame but himself for Americans losing patience with his war. It was a foreseeable outcome to starting a war based on complete horseshit. In other words, Bush himself is the primary cause of American disillusionment.

Joe O.'s picture

I read this to mean: "We need another 9/11 so Bush can regain his mojo." Sorry Stu, but I think another 9/11 type of attack might just backfire on the Bush Administration at this point. People are so cynical of Bush due to his constant lies regarding the war on terror that the first thought in their minds (and mine for that matter) will be that his Administration deliberately set it up or participated in the attack in order to rally the American people behind him.

On the other hand, those that still believe in the Bush Administration will also doubt Bush's leadership as another 9/11 style attack on the United States would remove the one pillar that continues to keep their support.  If another attack where to occur Bush can no longer say that his foreign policies (I.E. we have to fight them over there) or domestic policies (I.E. illegal wiretapping) had any effect what so ever.  In other words, Bush's supporters will see him as even more incompetent than before.

Stu Bykofsky

I just read your editorial where you fantasize about terrorists attacking America and suggest a few targets for them to hit and other helpful advice.

Your grammar and sentence structure sucks. You should have at least have finished High School.

But beyond that, you are giving aid and comfort to our enemies. You are conspiring with terrorists. Perhaps you are a member of Al Queada? Are you?

In olden days, such talk would've had you marched to the gallows and hanged until dead. These days we ship traitors like you off to Guantanamo and torture them endlessly for fun. Though I don't believe that anyone deserves a lifetime of torture, our administration seems to think that people like qualify.

You should be careful what you write. During Vietnam, one of the events that is little mentioned, is that returning soldiers started sniping at people who were cheerleading the war. They killed a few people, shot up some congressional limos, wounded some congressional aids and were never caught.

As this war rages on, don't make yourself a target for some veteran who has lost everything and is looking for someone to take it on.

Your public fantasies about slaughtering Americans, could very well get you in hot water with unstable patriotic Americans. You should think twice before publically announcing that you are siding with enemies of America.

If one is muslim and utters the words: "I hope there is an attack on the US brought by Allah so Americans shut the fuck up." That would get him canned in jail faster than a College Republican sprinting away from an enlistment form.

Yet, a conservative mouthpiece can say: "I hope there is an attack on the US so that everyone just shuts the fuck up and does as they are told." And no one will lift a finger against him.

I fact a liberal mouth piece could say: "I hope there is an attack on the US so that Americans can be made aware of the incompetence of this administration and the catastrophic failures that have made us mode vulnerable." And you would not hear the end of it on FAUX news calling for the public execution for such a traitor to the crown... err I mean the country.

From end to end of the blast-crested streets
Of civilized man like a freshly-filed talon to flesh;
And the screeching recoils against the red sky
And the plagued ocean smolders.
Terror’s depth is roused
By lies and the spineless realm
Of authority
Pointing eastward with a westward hand.

We, insensible spectator, stand open-mouthed
To the eagle’s rasp upon our human face;
And the snap of the shudder, too slow,
Find terror rooted shoulder to shoulder,
Glossy eyed, draped in ruin,
Panting to soar heavenward
And spatter the face of God.
.....We can no more this

Thankfully, we are united against the pathetically stupid Bush and chronically evil Cheney and the Republicans who can't stop licking their Tony Lamas. I JUST TALKED to Stu on the phone - personally, him and me. His first argument was this question to me "Was Pearl Harbor good for America or not?" My answer was no...his retort was that if Pearl Harbor never happened then an isolationist US would have never entered WWII. The non-logic of that was starting to scramble my brain. He asked if I thought the US would have entered WWII? Yes was my answer and then I had to put a stop to this WWII bullshit line of defense and call him out for wishing another terrorist attack wherein he started whining about "If a terrorist attack is inevitable" in the US again, then unfortunately it may as well be used to unite the country. My reply to this was that YES the attack on 9/11/01 united the coutnry but it was the ineptitude and of the administration and their response and consequent screw-ups and raping of the constitution that divided the country (and very civily so he wouldn't hang up) I told him that he was 100% wrong for wishing for an attack and to use the energy to help remove this administration. He said he wrote what he wrote to start a discussion and I said there are other ways to do that without wishing for innocent people to be killed. He thanked me for being civil and daid he had to go because his "phone was rining off the hook" and I said, no shit...other people aren't going to be so civil. You are in for a world of it.

Jay's picture

Aside from the tinfoil hat brigade that seems to have reared their ugly head once more...(Blackwater? Please...) It seems to me that this is a guy who wrote a column trying to focus on why it takes a tragedy such as 9/11 to unite people in this country. His style of writing can in no way be misinterpreted as good taste, but he does have a few good points. For instance this country does have a fast food mentality, i.e. if you cant win a war in 6 weeks, then what good are you? (Personal note to Stu, the Gulf War 1 didn't take 100 hrs. The ground invasion did from crossing the border to cease fire. The air war went on for 6 weeks prior to the ground invasion...and most of us were still in the desert for 6 months prior).

Give the guy a break. Could he have expressed his POV better, yes..., but I don't think anyone with half a brain is suggesting he actually wants another "9/11".

(P.S. to Stu...lay of the Cubs and Wrigley Field. We Cubs fans have enough problems as it is without you throwing that out there..... :-) )

The last stages of the smash and grab looting of America are in progress. Why had Dick Cheney put so much of his financial holdings overseas?

Because Dubai is fucking nuts! The city is booming like crazy and is already home to the only 7 star hotel in the world. Future plans: the world's largest mall, the world's tallest skyscraper, and an amusement park that will easily dwarf Disney World ten times over. Why are they doing this? Because the Prince of UAE isn't stupid: he knows that when the oil in his country runs out, there will be nothing left for the country to offer except tourism.

And I bet you that Cheney has a one way ticket to Dubai scheduled to leave on 01/21/09.

The Arab Financial system isn't under the new homeland security financial watch system. Homeland security can't search or freeze their accounts.

The Caribbean banking system has been undermined by the war on terror, and Dubai is now the safe place to put ill gotten assets. If Osama Bin Laden is still alive, I'd bet he has a penthouse suite in that 7 Star Hotel.

You should think twice before publicly announcing that you are siding with enemies of America.

Well, here's what I wrote to ol' Stu:

Stu,

"Sick bastard". You hit the nail right on the head. Hard to tell if
you're being purposefully controversial, or if you really believe what
you're writing. Let's assume the latter:

If you think an attack on this country would be a good thing, would
serve in any way at this point to unify it, you're a) a traitor
to the nation and b) seriously, criminally deluded.

You're advocating an attack on the United States. Because it might change
the political landscape. Of course, it wouldn't, but you think 'what the
hell - another attack on this country would be JUST the thing right now'.

Righteous rage? You're grossly overstating the threat posed by
terrorists, and you're pining for the death of Americans. For political
gain.

People who stoke fear for political advantage are terrorists. That's the
definition of 'terrorist'.

*YOU* are the enemy. The threat we face from idiots like you far
outweighs anything we suffered on 9/11, or might suffer in the future.

You say 'We knew who the enemy was shortly after 9/11.'. Well, if that's
the case, why'd we attack Iraq? A nation that by the President's own
admission had nothing to do with 9/11?

People believe Iraq was a mistake because it's quite clear now that we
were lied in to it.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You're not a patriot; rather, the
opposite.

It's pretty sad that he thinks the only way we can get something good to happen here is by first having a few thousand people die in a violent attack. Are we really that lost as a nation that we can only be united by a common hatred? Why can't we do things, like get national health care, for the common good because it is the right thing to do without anyone having to be martyred first?

bizona's picture

Here's my letter to Stu....

Mr. Bykofsky,

With all due respect, your column from yesterday has to be one of the dumbest articles with the most twisted logic I've ever read. You would prefer to have a country blindly united by "righteous rage" at the "hideous sins" of women and children being blown up than have to see and hear people debating politics and issues? That is truly the product of a very sick individual. I'll give you credit, though....at least you can admit it, as you do in the second line of your column.

As far as Iraq goes, Americans may not be against it because they are "anti-war," but most who are against it are not against it because it has gone on too long. That is a pretty simplistic assumption. I would argue most are against it because they are anti-unnecessary-war, as should any decent human being be. As it has become clearer to most Americans that we were misled into Iraq by an administration bent on attacking Iraq by any means possible, they have realized this war was not necessary and, as a result, has caused a lot of unnecessary suffering, both for the members and families of the US military and Iraqis in general. To now wish for more death and destruction in the US just to quiet and stifle verbal debate and bickering is nothing short of crazy. It's one thing to believe or know it will probably eventually happen, but quite another to wish for it.

The truth is, no matter how united this country has ever been, there has always been political disagreement and debate. Furthermore, democracy - true democracy - does not and cannot exist without it. I will take what you label "endless sideshow squabbles" any time over the horror we all witnessed on Spetmber 11, 2001.

I was sickened to hear his arguments as to why our nation needs another 9/11. And his evident pride in calling for thousands of innocent Americans to be slaughtered for political purposes.

Can I assume that this is your paper's position on the matter, that you wish aid and abet terrorists in the destruction of America? Do you think his advice to terrorists as to what targets to hit, is something you want to stand behind?

President Goerge Bush built Guantanamo Bay so that people like Stu who work with terrorists can be tortured endlessly for the rest of our lives. I don't believe in torture, but we live in a time where our nation does. If Stu keeps this up, he may soon find himself in a government institution, screaming for mercy while guards laugh and torture him for weeks on end.

Do him a favor, fire him before he goes so far that the CIA sees the need to rendition him along with some of his fellow employees.

And please help us put an end to the madness this country is declining into. You paper's calls for a terror attack on the US and you support of people who fantasize about the slaughter of thousands of innocent Americans, is not making this country a safer place.

People who get a thrill on such things as the slaughter of other human beings as Stu clearly does, needs psychiatric attention. Please, don't encourage this sick and demented behavior.

It's akin to screaming fire in a movie theater when there is no fire. How do these people who should be more responsible sound so irresponsible get a voice for the world to hear? It's so wonder why politicians opine so much about terror. They may very well be inviting it because they talk about it sooo much. Shut about terror already and let us solve our squawbles through conversational discourse. We are "not" so divided as a country that we can't be reasoned with if we believe we are reasonable. I say more talk of catastrophe, will only serve to erode the trust we have in ourselves and our fellow man.
