The poll is weighted a little funny putting the independents level with the democrats and republicans. Nothing against independents, obviously because I am one, but im sure they aren't in equal numbers in the poll.
Nonetheless, it is still clear opposition that needs the be a resounding call to repeal the wiretapping legislation.
Well no kidding!!! Let's wiretap the politicians and make all conversations public knowledge, starting with Georgie Bu$h, (pr)Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzales I don't remember, I don't recall, and KKKarl Rove...
While I strongly disapprove of Bush wiretapping the phone calls and emails of Americans without a search warrant from a judge, this poll is hardly impartial. I wouldn't put any stock in a poll done by Democrats.com as much as I would a Republican or any other overtly partisan organization.
To be cynical, many of the people in this poll will oppose domestic surveillance one moment ... and then they will roll over and support the Bush Administation labels it "terrorist surveillance". Too many are unable to see through the B.S. and rhetorical smokescreens. And they conclude -- wrongly -- that so long as the wiretapping and surveillance are aimed at "terrorists" and "foreign" phone calls/e-mail traffic, that they are not under surveillance as well.
And THAT disconnect is the reason why the polling numbers differ from actual voting patterns. And this is probably the reason why the Democrats are so weak-kneed in fighting the Bush Administration on these issues. Not that this is any excuse for the Democrat's grotesque and craven cave-in last week on FISA ...
For all of their supposed disenchantment with the President, the American electorate remains relatively trusting and easily manipulated, as well as short on critical thinking skills. The poor quality of the media coverage of these issues doesn't help.
This wiretapping leaves open to spying at just about anyone this government chooses. People will become more weary having conversation with their Lawyers over the phone. People risk exposing their personal credit card numbers, social security, private passwords, etc.
They have the ability to spy on political opponents, politicians, activist, etc. The wiretappers will be able at-will listen to any of our intimate conversations with anyone we have an intimate relationship with.
This is an expanded version of wiretapping that has nothing to do with fighting terrorism. The government must identify the terrorist first before wiretapping is justifiable within the guidelines of the law any expansive methods should be pre-aproved by FISA.
Won’t change a thing, you Americans are stuck with it forever.
Exactly.
Not only does this not matter, but I can almost be 100% sure that, come January 2009, with a Democrat in the White House and Democrats controlling both houses of Congress, the laws allowing this will not be rolled back.
Won’t change a thing, you Americans are stuck with it forever.

Fair point, but keep in mind that Republicans -- already a paranoid bunch -- may suddenly see the light when it's a Democratic administration ordering the wiretaps. I think there will then be enough opposition to scale back the worst excesses.
While I strongly disapprove of Bush wiretapping the phone calls and emails of Americans without a search warrant from a judge, this poll is hardly impartial. I wouldn't put any stock in a poll done by Democrats.com as much as I would a Republican or any other overtly partisan organization.
I followed the link to the site of the organization who performed the polling. I was hoping to find out how many households they called, what the response rates were, how they identified themselves, what area of the country the calls were to and the phrasing with which the framed in order to ascertain the quality of the data collected.
All of these factors can strongly affect the veracity of the poll. I was hoping that it was a well made, well conducted poll. I could not find out the specifics I wanted but was heartened by the fact that it was an organization outside of democrats.com chosen to conduct it. That lends crediblity to the results.
Cool, if only our "leadership" (and I'm talking about the Dems) cared what the public thinks. Sure would be nice to have our "leadership" on our side. Meanwhile "liberal" is still considered a pejorative, and congress has lower ratings than Bush.
And if anyone wondered why Congress has an approval rating of about 22%. This should be a lesson to all of the Congresscritters as to why they should not do anything the Shrub wants.
It's interesting to see such strong opposition from democratic voters to big government while gop voters seem to support big brotherism. But the GOP is trying to tell me is that the democrats are fascists and hate our freedoms. Go figure.
As a former member of the republicans, let me say that I'm embarrassed by that poll. I'm so glad I dropped out of the GOP. What a bunch of fucking sheep they've become.
What makes me really angry about this is that the Republican numbers would look a LOT more like the Democrats' numbers if we had a Democrat in office right now. Shouldn't they be freaking out that the government is too involved, too intrusive?
I hope the Democratic senators and represenatatives whose removal from office I will be supporting through upcoming election cycles read this poll result and understand why they are being shown the door. their betrayal is unforgivable.

With every poll something becomes more clear; Republicans are anti-American. Republicans oppose everything that is either good for the nation or approved by the majority.
The poll question is pretty slanted. That being said, who the hell are the people who approve? I can only assume they didn't get Civics 101. You know, then whole "Bill Of Rights" thing. Anyone? Anyone? Is this thing on?
Funny how those that wave the flag with the blindest fervor understand the least about our country, our laws, our rights.

Pseudo-funny story on this point. I recently had an argument with a guy about international law, the international criminal court, and arms deals. He said we should break any such agreements we signed in the past with impunity. I asked him how he'd balance that against the fact that such treaties and entities created by treaties carry the force of United States law. He asked me where I got that from. I said the Constitution. He said, and I quote, "Well, I don't know which Constitution you've been reading."
By pigs, I assume you mean both wings of the corporate party in Congress. You are correct. Dems and republicans alike will illegaly benefit from this breech of the gift our forefathers' intended as a promise to our citizens for political gain. This unconstitutional legislation was never truly intended to "fight terror". Its that arrogant mindset that tells them how they are all trust worthy, all above the law, all knowing in whats best. This is why they become so corrupt. They don't think they can be. Its time we realize that the corp. controlled media and the people we “elect”, with very few exceptions, are conspiring to seal our fascist fate. There was/is a reason that at the time this country was founded many state legislatures outlawed merchants interfering with the “peoples legislature” – that is - it was illegal for business to employ lobbyists.
Its also time for me to reconsider my support for gun controls, as it’s looking like they may be our only hope for reclaiming our government of – by – and FOR the people. The first step down the road to fascism was the extension of CIVIL rights to corporations, now we see those very same rights being pulled from under our feet. Corporations have the right to free speech in cigarette and alcohol advertising while citizens are herded into “free speech zones”.
Seriously! When was the last time you heard that legislation was being passed that wasn’t written by and for the benefit of some corporate interest or another? While only benefiting the public though some “trickle down” or “a rising tide lifts all boats” BS? We saw how that rising tide lifted all boats in New Orleans after Katrina.
The sad part is, thanks to limited ballet access and money, we’re stuck the Dems and Repugs who continue to play us for fools.
what i think makes all of bush's overreaching power grabs so bad isn't the fact he does them, but that the Dems always end up bending over and letting him take them.
why? they want this stuff too, so they put up the token fight long enough for the news to move on, then quietly bend over so they can take advantage of this crap next time they win.
it's all just a game to these people, but they're secretly on the same side.

Polls? Why consult polls to determine what the American public believe?
Simply ask Chris Matthews or Joe Klein.
What they personally believe is surely what the majority of American people believe as well.
They don't care about polls. Polls? We don't need no stinkin' polls!
And the Bushies are thinking, 'Who cares?'
Won't change a thing, you Americans are stuck with it forever.
What the fuck does Bush care? He's not running again.
Shouldn't Ind/Somewhat Approve be just 9%?
