George Bush's nominee for Surgeon General has drawn a lot of heat for among other things, his crack-pot anti-gay views as a leader in the United Methodist affiliate of the Institute on Religion and Democracy. But a new report may finally sink his already controversial nomination in a sea of conflicts of interest that have marked his career.

Dr. James Holsinger has also been a longtime leader of the Confessing Movement in the United Methodist Church. The Confessing Movement is a rightwing "renewal group" affiliated with the Washington, DC-based Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD), whose purpose for a generation has been to divide and disrupt the historic churchs of mainline protestantism in the interests of advancing neoconservatism and the religious right.

Holsinger was elected to the highest court in the Methodist Church a time when the IRD-affiliated church "renewal" groups had launched efforts to use church judicial systems to enforce their notions of orthodoxy, particularly on matters related to homosexuality.

Now, an investigation Rev. Andrew J. Weaver, Ph.D. and Lawrence H. McGaughey, Esq., and published at Media Transparency, shows that Holsinger used the sale of a United Methodist Church-owned hospital in Kentucky, as a cash cow for his personal ambitions. It took years of litigation by the church to find out what had happened to its money, only to learn that Holsinger had diverted millions to endow professorships at the Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky where he served as Chancellor and fundraiser-in-chief. Another shepherd shears his sheep.

Looks like we've found our next Tearoom Bust.

From now on, we should assume that anyone in politics or religion with crack-pot gay views

is gay.

So let me get this straight, he stole money from a church? What will those in the Bush administration do next steal candy from babies?

you mean he is a corrupt republican? Why...that is almost unheard of...
this must be some kind of mistake!............BWWWWWAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

BIG Surprise? Another holier-than-thou, gay-bashing POS gets hoist by his own petard.

It's been quite a week ain't it folks. This usually quiet week before the return of Congress has been chock full of juice.
I'll bet the GOP members of Congress would like still another month off.

FOX has been saying it was shameful how the Dems have been so quiet about the Craig business, making remarks about how dems "condone" Bathroom trysting. When actually the Democrats are doing ok just sitting back and letting the GOP implode on itself.

Does bush know ANYONE that is not a crook or an incompetent ass?

Cheating, Corruption, criminality and immorality is the standard Rethug. sworn oath on the bible.

Cut Mr. Snow some slack. Maybe his health insurance policies sucks as much as mine does and all his cancer treatments are being denied coverage. It'd hate for the guy to fall victim to the stuff only us common folk are supposed to suffer from.

Frankly I don't care about their proclivities, that is as long as they don't continue to spout anti-gay rhetoric, or steal from the gullible supports.

I guess that doesn't say much for the senate.

I may not agree with their stances on many issues, but at the end of the day, they aren't involved in any of this garbage. The Democrats aren't making a fuss of Craig's arrest because his sexual orientation is not the issue (besides, if there was a morals clause for being elected to Congress/Senate, the lot of 'em would be out on their kiesters) ... but the utter stupidity of pleading guilty to a charge he was innocent of 'in the hopes it would go away'. It's called a fundamental misunderstanding of how our courts work, but he was probably afraid some 'activist judge' would sentence him to a lead role in La Cage Aux Folles or something.

As for this idiot, anybody who says 'gay can be cured through prayer' should be rejected on the spot. It's just another flimsy excuse to cover non-existant morals. Oh, you sinned? Say a prayer. Committed adultery (Hi, Congressman Vitter! How's the wife?)? Say a prayer.

I don't dispute the power of prayer, nor forgiveness ... but it's supposed to be an exercise in honesty, not deceit.

That's Bush for you... notice Bush only hires criminals, liars and scumbags, oh and republicans - same thing.

i think it may be because in republican circles, there seems to be an air of if "you stick with us, you will be rewarded or rich", and with that i think it must bread an air of entitlement, or envy, greed etc. In short, i think republicans really care about nothing but themselves, and their polices are a reflection of that; taxes, security, energy, gun control, fox news, even social polices on abortion, school prayer, i think are infantile projection of that. Infantile be key word. Never is social well being ever really taken into account. its all about "help me and screw my neighbor, and especially screw him if he is liberal, black, Hispanic, gay, different than me in my beliefs or lives in state where people like that our from. If your gay, i might be gay, I want to pray in school, you must too". And when one looks at response to where money was spent after Katrina and 9/11 helps prove my point. And as rethugs have said for decades, "if you dont love it (it being any policy they are for), leave it".
Funny, how reverse is never true or said to them by liberals. End of rant.

There are a few things that may tie in together here. Whether or not the Greek style man/boy club actually exists in DC as rumored - and whether or not former runnaways like Jeff Gannon are actually a product of such rumored DC cultural events (as was also rumored). Would the exploited in this circle then be funneled into public service on behalf of the party? This theoretical - if true - might explain part of the problem.

The wingnuts are trying to split all the mainline churches over the issue of acceptance of gay people and seize sizable amounts of their property in the process. They've already done it to the Episcopal Church. The schismatics are now following a lunatic Nigerian bishop who wants to imprison gays in his own country. The chutzpah of the Methodist schismatics of calling themselves the "confessing movement" goes beyond hubris. The Confessing Church was the portion of the Protestant Church in Germany that resisted Hitler. I'm so glad that this posturing thief got caught with his hand in the till. I hope this gets wide press coverage and I hope he goes to prison for embezzlement.

I wonder how he is able to find these theocratic nazis in the first place. There is NO mainstream republican that would have been a better candidate? I think shrub is actually a anarchist trying to bring down the govt by loading with escapees from some assylum.

The Institute on Religion and Democracy is basically evil.

They try to force churchs to change to suit outsiders.

Bush's nominee = Bush's crony
Bush's crony = incompetent, corrupt, closet gay
OR TWO OR ALL THREE of the above.

I can no longer resist the mantra:
Worst. Administration. Ever.

I once took a class in communications given by a psychiatrist that was also a reserve Admiral. His belief was that ambition was a clear sign of mental illness. For anyone to give up a happy life with friends and family, leisure time, and a stress free lifestyle to pursue fame or power was not natural. I'd have to say that Craig has conflicts that induce mental illness, but Cheney is a poster child of that.

I'd guess Bush also organic brain damage from alcohol and drug abuse, illustrated by Wernicke's aphasia, explaining his often rambling speech pattern.

Just another crime of a thug of the crime family...when will the American people stand up and say enough? When do we drag these worthless bastards from our White House and string them up? They hate America and they hate our form of government.

It's worse than that - they try to permanently splinter the various protestant denominations in order to control their assets and also their social agenda of helping the indigent and poor - which IRD perceives as being too "liberal" - all part of an overall Reconstructionist agenda to try to infiltrate the education system in general and the colleges in particular. This also includes their goal to control government, and the courts.

They aim to destroy a perceived liberal "agenda" in schools, government and religion - all of it. It's very insidious and is funded by people like Ahmanson and Scaife.

All in a day's work of destroying America forever.

It's not so much that they only know dishonest, self-serving crooks. It's that they need people who are crooks to do the things that they need to have done. You'd have a hard time finding a non- war criminal politician who would have supported to the invasion of Iraq or decided to award so many vital reconstruction contracts to foreign countries instead of to Iraqis so they just go for the criminal.

Gee, what a surprise. Stick a fork in him too, he's done. Will our country ever survive the chronic dishonesty of our leaders and persons in power?

Two things come to mind:
1) The RNC picks the ones with skeletans in the closet - kind of like the KGB would go after agents who have something to hide. That gives them total control over them.
2) When the republican party decided to scoop up the evangelicals by claiming to be the 'family values' party, many of these men were already in Congress. I would imagine the republican leadership warned them that to avoid suspicion they should loudly and often proclaim how much they 'hate' homosexuals, pedophiles, etc.
