Was O'Reilly serious when he said this? Was he responding to a racist who said something like: "Dinning at a black establishment must have been pretty hairy, huh Bill?"
I mean, he didn't just say this because he was sitting there in the restaurant thinking: "I've got to mention on my show about how well-behaved black people can be." Did he?

I once went to a restaurant in a white suburb frequented by Republicans and you know, it was really almost normal. Not one of the guys tried to hit on other guys, or on kids at the next table or anything, nobody bribed anyone, you didn't hear one person there sexually harrasing his coworkers, I didn't hear anyone say "Shut Up!" every few seconds, I mean they were really civil. I was amazed!

To look down on someone because of their race is wrong, of course... judge an individual by their thoughts and actions, not by their appearance. But to deny that these people have had different life experiences because of their race doesn't do anyone any favors. To achieve true equality, we must see and acknowledge the inequalities, and you can't do that without taking race into account in some fashion - you can try, but you'll never get the whole picture.

The entry makes it sound like he's comparing black behavior to white behavior.
He's saying that when you are with people instead of listening to media depictions of their lives, you see how opposite they are.
Is this still racist? In a way, yes. While he's not saying he's surprised that black Americans are civilized people, he appears to be relating the story as a man who is normally a stranger to black Americans. This is the kind of racism that we have now in America: Blacks and whites are strangers to each other, so we can't help but make stories of our encounters sound a little alien.
By the way, we have the same isolation from each other as southern Christians and north-eastern liberals. Christians and Jews not knowing many Muslims, etc.
So we make assumptions based on isolation and strangeness.

Well, at the risk of having everyone jump on me, I do think it's worth listening to the whole clip. Perhaps if Bill had a sense of humor and could have made his point with sarcasm (no one tried to kill me with a samurai, for instance) instead of couching it in the I'm-a-white-guy-and-rarely-interact-in-an-all-black-environment like he did, it would have been more palatable. Perhaps it's just that it's Bill and so it's hard to separate the message from the messenger. In context, however, I have to say that it is less egregious than it appears to be at first.

Man do I disagree. The clearest way to show what I mean is satire, I think. (I tried above, but more pointedly:

Does this make it clear?? It doesn't really matter what you think his intent was, what he wanted to say and what he ends up saying can be two different things. He reveals himself to be an insulting racist in the way he puts it. Just because he then adds "there's no difference!" afterwards doesn't change much, in my mind. It's "subtle" to some here, I guess, but however you classify it on the subtlety scale, it's racism for sure.
Why is this asshat still on the air? His ratings are in freefall because of crap like this! Down some 74%.

After listening to the entire clip, I think the more offensive and racist comments were made before Bill even began discussing the restaurant. He said something about some black people "starting to think for themselves." Starting to? I found that far more offensive than the rest of what he said, which I think has been taken out of context to some degree.
I guess it would be presumptuous to offer apologies on behalf of white men everywhere.
