Bill Maher to the GOP: Stop the Scaremongering on Iran!

After he goes through his new rules, Bill Maher takes aim at the nonsensical and uniformed statements and ads from the GOP presidential candidates about Iran...

Maher:  ... At the Republican debate last week, Mike Huckabee said Islamofascism is the greatest threat we ever faced. Really?  More than the Nazis and the Russians and the Redcoats?

Close...if he had said Christianofascism he would have been absolutely correct.

Bill Maher? Isn't he the guy who refuses to consider that neo-conservative BS may have actually started with the "official" story about 911 ?

It's the American people's fault now.

This war continues because the American people allow it. The pass the buck to the Democrats who hold no accountability unless they say something "bad" about the President.

If only about 24% support the war, why is there still a war? Where is your democracy? Show me. Show me the democracy. Show me how most people opposed the war have to endure it either way because they can't stop it.

The facts are out there. Global warming is a threat and the war is a failure. So why?

This only happens if the American people allow it. If the people can't be the ones to decide if there should be war or not, then were is your democracy?

More accurately it's their responsibility to do something about it now, they have a rouge administration, time to feed the tree of liberty.

What he said about fear is true, most of it is made up, spun and focused ..... they should make watching V for Vendetta compulsory ........

"V for Vendetta" ... ah, yes. I love to watch that show and fantasize. Anyone who hasn't read Maher's book, "When You Ride Alone You Ride with Bin Laden" should check it out.

That was actually a fairly amusing little rant

Because he deserves it. I'm not sure if Tancredo has Lou Dobb's disease or if Lou Dobbs has Tom Tancredo's disease, but I wish they would find a cure and quick. They're both nutjobs. The more I hear either talk the more it makes me wish they'd just add another star to the flag for the new state of Mexico.

I actually disagree with Bill on this one... I do think that, while not a strong case indeed, the idea that neo-conservative, military industrial complex, CIA or whatnot, might be involved, albeit logistically, does deserve consideration, or at least be respected...

That said I think your post is a lot more nutcasey that uncle joe mccarthy's. Cheers :)

Here's an interesting little bit of research on the objective threat of terrorism to the U.S...something I like to show people like Huckabee who like to tell everyone that we should be shitting our pants all the time over "islamofascism," whatever the hell that is:

Those are cute words, but unfortunately, the American people have already failed. How do I know this? Because it doesn't go much lower than where we are now and this all happened because the American people allowed it.

The American people won't do squat. They're lazy and don't care about a war far, far away.

They'll just continue to vote for Democrats and whine about them not doing anything.

To date, since Democrats have been given the Congress and House, the war has actually escalated and have given Bush more spy power.

Your words are empty because Americans won't do anything. Zip. Nada. All they do is go to a voting booth and hope and pray someone does the right thing. That's not how you keep a democracy, if you even want to call it that anymore.

As a legitimate question. If they did it as sure as hell would not tell anyone. And if not... Well. If you look at the record of the Bush administration it is quite possible that they have not had a competent investigation. If you look at their record you'd probably conclude that they simply went as far as their objectives would lead them, not necessarily the quest for truth.

LibertyLust @ 22:

Aren't there like, a dozen third parties? I'm afraid what we really need is probably not going to happen ... not until shit goes waaaayyy bad. And I don't think the ruling class will let that happen. I think they'll keep tossing us just enough American Idol and cheap comfort food to keep us drooling on the couch.

What's he appealing to, the GOP's reasonable side? Their sense of decency? That's so naive as to be cute. We must appeal to each other. Don't be afraid. Don't watch Fox or CNN or the networks. Get news from real news sources. Fight to preserve what's left of your rights. Reject Hillary. Support a candidate who cares as much about your rights as you do.

Regarding Bill Maher's position on the topic that lead to the ejections from his audience last week:

Do I think Cheney was morally capable of pulling off that topic? Yes. Do I think he did? No. Do I think that all of the objective, physical evidence supports that? Absolutely. Do I think once it happened it was very hard for him to contain his glee while he called his broker and his cabal of contractor friends? Absolutely. Do I believe Richard Clarke when he says Cheney looked him in the face and told him to find a way to make Iraq culpable. Absolutely.

Human to Billo #2 - I guess that's why your pick Killer Hillary voted for more War. Oh, and get a Physics lesson or 2.
Peace.

And the morons are out in force tonight.

Put your dicks away boys, those tiny things don't impress anyone.

Come on, you guys. I've seen girls scouts have better fights than this.

Absolutely correct. All the morons that put their faith in Democrats are out in full force tonight.

The greatest threat we face is, was, and always will be, the Republican Party.

Wow, so that is how DFH fight.

Anyhoo, they will declare mission accomplished again before the election:

Yup. That's America in a nutshell. My own personal conspracy theory is, Anna Nicole was a minion of Karl Rove,, and when she died (mysteriously-- great touch Karl) they needed a Britney meltdown to satisfy the mob (and keep them from taking any interest in Washington), so they poisoned her water supply, making her go berserk. I'm sure there are "other agents" queued up, in case Britney unexpectedly goes off the rails. Have some more nachos and pass the salsa, would ya?

Screw Maher.

As for other conspiracy theories, I would agree, whatever "truth" there is, we'll never see, hear, or otherwise get any access to. And I can't say I'm satisfied with everything this administration "feeds us", about a whole lot of things. The Democrats haven't "fed us" any differently either. 'Nuff said??

Please post a link to the comment to the person who said that false flag incidents, like the ones you reference, have never happened. After you do that, we'll address the rest.

There will always be believers and disbelievers. 44 years after Kennedy's assination, and people still have doubts that Oswald was the lone gunmen. But perhaps that is what the controllers really crave. Just leave a tiny amount of doubt in everyones mind, and then let the people fight amongst themselves while we movers and shakers go about ruling the world.

sorry... (again) I posted before I read the comments.

Holy crap, Wess. If you'd read the threads, we addressed that about 2 hours ago. Don't apologize for being petty. Apologize for being late and repetitive.

Remember, kids, no costume = no candy.

Islamo-fascism may be the greatest threat to the United States only because we have Mitt Romney, Rudy Giulanni and the like running around trying to scare the crap out of us so the Republican's can continue to build their police state.

As usual Bill Maher nails it -- I couldn't help but chuckle when Wes Clark chimed in "here, here" on the "I think we can hold Charleston" remark and the other reactions -- especially Andrew Sullivan's near doubling over with laughter, made the whole segment that much more enjoyable.

Ah, hell. My post to Wess would have been much funnier had he not so quickly caught himself. Damnit.

Well, both Wes Clark and Valerie P. Wilson agree that Iran is malevolent, and is seeking to build a nuclear bomb--I know that's not popular here, but it is true...Both do say, however, that diplomacy, not bombs, is the best approach toward that theocracy.

No we don't. We need to wrestle power from the neocons, prosecute them for their crimes, and otherwise beat down the scum ("values voters") who allowed the last seven years to take place......when we have dismantled their propaganda machine (Do you think that Hillary has any love for talk radio?), gerrymandered the congressional districts.....etc, THEN, we can try and get our progressive social issues handled.....otherwise, we are just playing into their hands, as we smugly stand on our principles voting for Greens or whatever........the world can't take another 4 years of a corrupt delusional ignorance, and if we need to wait 4 years or more to get a true progressive platform into place, so be it.

Disasters aren't any better if you know what caused them. The disaster already occurred. Knowing the reason only helps prevent the same happening again.

But right now we need to deal with a fool who has confused what's good for his family and what's good for the nation.

This is a good point. During Valerie Wilson's press junket to promote her book, hardly anyone was commenting on the fact that she was saying that. Unfortunately, diplomacy doesn't make private contractors any money. So what they have said will be cherry-picked and used against them if anything at all.

[I have every right. You are the one who has overstepped the bounds here. My complaint was made. Are you able to comply? If not, I'll make it so every comment you make needs a monitor's approval-Sitemonitor]

I Like Bill Maher, but he is completely right in this video and completely wrong. His video, taken as an entire idea, is totally and utterly contradictory. He is not alone though. Here's why:

He is very angry that there are certain people in Washington who are using scare tactics (because they are afraid themselves) on such things as Islamofascism, terrorism in general, and nuclear weapons proliferation.

He is implying that using fear and talking about fears is not a good thing for this country. Of course he is right about this.

BUT, instead of saying what he should have said, that is, that Bush and other politicians as leaders should talk about things like encouraging this country on scientific progress, encouraging this country on family, encouraging this country on education, encouraging this country on entrepaneurship, encouraging this country on entertainment, encouraging this country on the values of individual freedom (including from government itself), instead of doing this which would be the most helpful thing a government can do, he instead says that

"No, we should not be afraid of Islamofascism which doesn't pose a threat, we SHOULD be VERY afraid of global warming."

Why is that nobody here in these comments even mentioned that Maher is advocating using ANOTHER scare tactic? He says don't frighten people, but he says that our skin is going to fall off if we don't socialize the world's economy immediately!!

I mean, is this not a contradiction? If some people don't want to be told to be scared of something, why do those same people scare others? It's almost as if this country has turned into one giant scared nation, scared not of one thing, but a combination of things. Why are people so afraid of something? Why can't everyone be calm and not afraid and deal with things rationally?

On the one side people say we should be afraid of global warming because nobody is doing anything about it, namely Bush is not doing anything to stop it. So, these people are afraid that the Earth is going to turn into a fireball, but they are not afraid of Islamofascism.

Bush and his people on the other hand are afraid of Islamofascism, but not global warming.

So, if this nation is comprised of two groups of people, (usually left and right, but not always), one group is afraid of one thing, and the other group is afraid of another thing, that means that by law of addition there is nobody afraid of NOTHING.

In other words, there is hardly anybody around that isn't afraid at all. It's also VERY sad that those who ARE not afraid, are almost immediately told by whoever that they are crazy and that they SHOULD be afraid of either Islamofascism or global warming. But what good would it do for these last remaining people to then become afraid as well?

Since when do people have to be afraid of something in order to do something about it? How have we as Americans ever come to this crazy conclusion? Why do we have to be afraid? I'm not afraid of either Islamofascism or global warming. But I can bet anyone here that some of you will probably tell me I SHOULD be afraid. Think about this and think about how you think, I don't think this nation is healthy if everyone WANTS to be afraid. We don;t have to be if we don't want to be.

Considered thoughtful comments.

That is what this site needs more of. considered thoughtful comments...

Has it occurred to you that having seen a child sitting in the middle of the railroad tracks with an express train building speed rushing toward it that aside from rushing into the train's path to slow it down for a nano second that the next best thing might be to tell the kid to get out of the way?

Has it occurred to you that having seen a child sitting in the middle of the railroad tracks with an express train building speed rushing toward it that aside from rushing into the train's path to slow it down for a nano second that the next best thing might be to tell the kid to get out of the way?

I don't think the "best thing" to do is to rush into the train's path. I think that's what you should do if all else fails. Telling the kid to move out of the way is probably the best thing to do. If they can't hear you then maybe tackling that kid like a football player out of the way might work too.

Let me ask you this:

Why is there a kid on the train tracks anyway? Why isn't there a bird singing in the tree?

There is no bird singing in the tree because the tree was burned in the fire that swept through the valley due to the drought that was caused by global warming.

Oh, i forgot. The people in charge of the policies that would curb global warmng are the "child" sitting on the railroad tracks. The scientists are the ones screaming for the child to get off the tracks. You are the guy in the Hummer between the scientists and the child on the tracks blasting the stereo.

Oh ya, I forgot something too.

Those people "in charge" that could curb global warming. How is that they would be smart enough to know what to do? Why do you think that you or I aren't smart enough to know how to deal with it as we see fit? The best way is for everyone to act in the best way they can, there is no way that we can control the world like that, unless we are living like a "rat in a cage".

Your taste in Humor aside, Socialism is not imprionment. But then you would not know that because you haven't a clue what it is.

So let me get this straight. Apparently the people who brought us Global Warming due to their policies of greed can no longer deny Global Warming exists and can no longer deny our policies have created it. So instead of figuring out that they had better find a solution they have come up with a "new and improved" form of propaganda that says any action to curb Global Warming is an act of "Socialism" which will take away our "freedoms" (you know, the freedom to drink either Coke or Pepsi).

How ingenious is that?

I yes I do. Socialism MUST be imprisonment because whoever is in charge has no incentive to provide people with better products and services. People's standard of living will deteriorate so badly over time until there is a revolution, just like in Soviet Russia. Socialism cannot work because it presumes that there can only exist a select few people who are capable of making wise decisions for everyone else. These people will enforce this monopoly of knowledge with tyranny, they must, or else people will usurp them for making their lives so terrible.

Socialism is actually slavery and THAT should be avoided at all costs.

Please don't presume to know what I think, I thought you were cool until your last comment.

Thank you for making my point. You do not know what Socialism is. It was never practiced in the Soviet Union. However it is practiced in most European Countries. There is no "group" that "brought us global warming". I won't get into the evidence of global warming because it is not only off topic, but fear mongering anyway. Of course I know what Socialism is. I studied it. But I don't want to argue because you are afraid and afraid people are insufferable.

Socialism is when the government owns the means of production of a country. This occurred in Soviet Russia, thus they were socialist. I cannot believe someone on this blog thinks they were not. My comment about Coke or Pepsi makes total sense if you think about it. (Please feel "free" to do so.) We are given limited choices by corporations and parties but they want us to have the illusion of freedom. Let me ask yo, are you feeling free to vote for a third party candidate next year?

Wag @ 111:

As someone who also studied Soviet history, I must back xoites on this one. The Leninist/Stalinists had a totalitarian system. They used Marxist theory as an excuse to get power. Right about then, the goals of true socialism went straight out the window.

"Socialism is when the government owns the means of production of a country. This occurred in Soviet Russia, thus they were socialist."

That is only half of the equation and is a capitalist view of Socialism. The other half of Socialism is the shared wealth of that production. The Soviet Union never practiced that and therefore were never Socialist.

If you're 51 years old, then you should know better. You are supposed to be looked up to because of your years of experience.

You are assuming that it is going to get "bad". How can you say that? Because of what some scare tactic scientists say who MUST be shrill in order to get funding by government? There are lots of rational scientists who say its bullocks. If you are so concerned with the future and your kids and their kids etc, then the least you can do is respect their choices if they are rational.

And your comment about Coke and Pepsi DOESN'T make sense, even after I thought about it for a second time. You say we are given limited choices? Are you a crazy 51 year old? How many options for beverages are there in this world? There are thousands and thousands. If you drink one different drink every single day for the rest of your life (same for me), you (I) would have something different everyday.

Have you even BEEN to a grocery store lately?

Wow...

If you think there is a limit somehow "forced" on you, you obviously haven't any idea how goods are created. They don't fall off trees like your generation like to say all the time. They must be made. There is no conspiracy that is limiting the types of goods for sale. If something is lacking, it will be created, if business wants to make money. They don't survive if they stagnate. Everyone knows that!

A more explicit definition of Socialism might be when a country controls the resources its country naturally creates and the means to create wealth from those resorces and refuses to sell either the resources or the refineries to Exxon-Mobil.

Been to Walmart lately? It is where everyone who used to have a grocery store of their own works now. Walmart offer really cheap goods for ok prices.

Definition right there for you...

It's written right there...exactly like I said.

Hey, smarty pants. I think there is a point to be made that Merriam-Webster would naturally include the definition of the now-bastardized definition of the word. They also refer to Marxist theory, which was in no way what the Soviets intended on doing. Do you honestly think a four line dictionary definition of such a complex issue is the way to go?

You're obviously no dummy. But given the way you're hell bent on educating everyone to the absolute truth that only you possess, suggests that you are about 20 years old. I envy you. I'm not as old as that old fart xoites, but I'm older than you.

Anyway, who the hell ever suggested that Marx was a sound theory. I think it was me who said the Soviets used Marxist theory to build a movement, then pretty much bastardized it. Maybe I misunderstand, but when you say:

That is NOT socialism. “Shared wealth” is what socialists SAY when they want to turn a country socialist. But the end result is NEVER shared wealth. It cannot be “shared”, for who determines the proportions? The state obviously.

aren't you confirming that the Soviets weren't socialists?

Sorry that I'm laggin behind here ...

What part of "no academic status" don't you get?

Wag @ 138:

Janet @ 134:

Piers Corbyn has no academic status and his role in such programmes is to promote his own weather prediction business. He has steadfastly refused to ever subject his climatological theories to any form of external review or scrutiny.

LOL LOL LOL

That's because he uses his science to outpredict all the wanker scientists paid by government in terms of weather prediction.

If he were to release his superior methods, he would be out of a job. You see, he HAS to keep it secret because he doesn't believe that CO2 is causing global warming. His knowledge of this fact has enabled him to outsmart the other idiots.

The fact that the paid off scientists don't like him just proves my point MORE in fact. That he is not brainwashed. He is an independent scientist who uses real science, not hokey science.

If he were to release his supior methods?

Does your tin foil hat come in different colors? I have a friend who is looking for one in a silvery bronze motif.

I meant a credible scientist that is not paid by the oil or coal industry.

Name a scientist. OK.

Dr Piers Corbyn.

"If you’re 51 years old, then you should know better. You are supposed to be looked up to because of your years of experience."

No, you either have a rational argument or you don't. Age has nothing to do with it.

Janet @ 141:

What part of "no academic status" don't you get?

The part I don't get is how you googled Piers Corbyn, looked at the 5th hit down, copied and pasted what this guy "George Marshall" has written on his personal blog, and then race back here, give me what somebody else wrote, and then you presume to have rebuked what I said.

The only thing you have proven is you inability to think for yourself.

BURN!

You've got to get up pretty early to get anything past this guy. He's got BillO-like reflexes. Don't bring your spin in here ... wag will knock that shit right back where it came from.

Oh, you're back!

Here's where xoites calls me out:

For the record ... I'm not truly convinced that mankind has had as much impact on climate change as some may think. I think it might be part of a self-regulating ecosystem that has been doing this since the birth of the planet. Yeah, we're probably impacting it a little ... but there are many who would have you believe (not necessarilly here) that humans caused climate change. That's not true, of course.

In any event, taking steps to reduce the human footprint on the environment is a good thing. Not only will it slow any impact we may be having, it is a great way to stimulate the economy by introducing new technologies, hence new opportunities for jobs.
