LA Weekly: "[Ray Bradbury's] fear in 1953 that television would kill books has, he says, been partially confirmed by television’s effect on substance in the news."
And Barry Bonds has been indicted...

And very good news: the International Monetary Fund has read their email and is finally moving ahead with debt relief for Liberia.

And don't forget there's a Democratic Debate Open Thread going on tonight, too.

RCMP = Real Cops Murder People!

Not sure if this was covered in last night's open thread, but a new video surfaced yesterday showing the October 14th murder of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport at the hands of four RCMP officers.

Regardless of anyone taking issue with the term 'murder' in this incident, there are a few unarguable facts surrounding this case, not the least of which were the bald-faced lies told to the media and the public about what had occurred. The RCMP insisted Dziekanski, who had cleared security areas to be where he was (therefore could not have had a weapon), was assaulting the officers prior to being shocked. Although agitated after 10 hours in Customs (given no food or water) after a 10+ hour flight from Poland (his first ever flight), clearly this video shows Dziekanski responding as well as he could to the orders of the 4 RCMP officers, even though he spoke no English. He presented no danger to the officers, but they shocked him multiple times within 25 seconds of arriving at the scene, once clearly while he was down and restrained.

Another lie we heard from the RCMP was the use of pepper spray was not a viable alternative because the area was too crowded. Again, as seen in the video, this is completely false. The 4 RCMP and Dziekanski were the only ones in the room.

Finally, and what is probably most troublesome to me, is the fact that not one of those first-aid trained officers even attempted to revive Dziekanski, even though one of them had called 'code blue'. It also took on-site paramedics over 10 minutes to respond, when they should have been there in 2 minutes, leading to questions of whether the officers bothered to even call the paramedics.

Warning - if you're going to watch the video, keep in mind you're watching the death of someone. I realize many will find it far too disturbing, but some of us need to bare witness to this abusive act of authority.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepared to debate the renewal of FISA revisions made in August, President Bush and his Republican allies in Congress are endorsing a unique double-standard when it comes to immunity for telecommunications firms. Within the United States, they argue, service providers such as AT&T and Verizon must cooperate with U.S. government demands for access to Americans' electronic communications and should be immune from citizens' lawsuits. But in China and elsewhere, as Republican reaction to this week's Yahoo saga suggests, not so much.

For the details, see:
"FISA, Yahoo and the GOP Double-Standard on Telecom Immunity."

OK, you hate sports. Fine. Not everyone agrees with you.

1. Barry Bonds is an African-American hero and the Bush administration is determined to take him down. They have not gone after the Caucasian slugger Mark McGwire, for whom rumors have been floated longer than for Bonds.

2. Do we trust the Gonzalez appointees? They would have been fired if this did not have the approval of Bush, even though when he was owner of the Texas Rangers, the whole steroids thing started. Sammy Sosa and Jose Canseco passed through the Rangers roster and have not been investigated, as far as we know.

3. The publicity for this case came from illegally leaked Grand Jury testimony.

What happened to Marion Jones, and now Barry Bonds, is a travesty of the highest order.

All drug testing in all Professional Sports needs to be ended, now.

Either that, or set up parallel sports leagues where drug testing is not done, or required, and let the market decide what the spectating public wants to see.

What I find absolutely amazing is that the vast majority of talking heads, on both the TV news and sports channels, who now have the pitchforks and torches out for Mr. Bonds for screwing with the "holy sanctity and purity" of The Game ,are the very same people that will not bat an eye when it comes to having a little work done to improve their appearance, or will get regular Botox shots.

Or, if presented with the idea of doing in utero fiddling with their kid to select their eye color, intelligence, musical ability, score a 1600 on their SATs, or, whatever, they will not hesitate a second to make sure that their progeny has an edge in life.

Ethics my ass.

It's more like rankest of hypocrisy.

I totally agree. We should shoot athletes full of cocaine before races so that their run faster for our amusement. Great idea! And if you get hurt, why stop to heal -- just take MORE COCAINE! Seems to work for horses (except for that 4 year life-span thing).

Hell, it worked great to get more work out of black dockworkers in the Jim Crow era, why not return to that? It's not like forcing cocaine onto an entire class of labor had any repercussions down the line or anything...

Of course, their hearts may explode... that's OK though. It just opens MORE opportunities for other athletes! Like the little kids... we could even have endorsed products for them, like 'Lil Snorts™, small tubes of cocaine just for child athletes! Now they can be like their heroes! Has anyone locked L.T. into a contract yet? You should get on that...

The best part of all is there are so MANY drugs that we haven't even tried yet! Does taking PCP, Meth, and LSD together make you run faster? Who cares... let's just load up the next batch of meat at Olympics and see what happens! I'll be so proud... until one of them pulls down their pants and eats the throat out of a baby instead of running, anyway... still it's WAY better than just having to sell colored sugar-water to fat diabetic kids as a "sports-drink".

I'm glad you spotted this opportunity...

The only significant difference between the Democrat and the Republican presidential candidates is that the Republicans have a couple of fringe CrazyChristianEvangelicalFundamentalistBornAgainRapture freaks who claim to get their guidance directly from some other-worldly creature (and we sure as hell know the insane stupidity that can get us into in a president).

Other than that, once elected, it will be as hard to tell the difference between a Hillary and a Rudy, for example, as between a 'dum' and a 'dee'. They will both be corrupt, pander to the same corporate, monied, and religious interests, compromise the principles on which this country was founded, and use the fear of 'terrorism' to pass their policies.

And none will dare challenge, at extreme peril to their financial furures and media reputations, the primary reason for 'terrorism' in the middle east: the blind, unquestioning support of Israel and it's depredations against the indigenous peoples of the area.

We need to do away with the current two party system, or, at the very least, add to it with a significant, robust third party. There is slim hope in the rising of 'Independent' voter registrations across the country, people who reject both the Dems and The Reps, or are at least will to consider rejecting them if (when) something better comes along.

And isn't it hard to believe that we are a 'Great Nation', when the best we can do in politics is something as corrupt as the Dems and the Reps?

While Bush and Cheney are allowed to keep playing their murderous, despicable games undisturbed? (And who can guess what freaky substances they may be on?)

Re: Your comments above.

Number one, I'm not advocating shooting anybody full of cocaine, for my, or anyone else's amusement.

Besides that, given the nature of that particular drug, cocaine, I don't believe it would be the first one any athlete would reach for to get an edge over their competition, in any sport.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

What I am talking about is bringing honesty and transparency into Professional Sports, because with what we have now, with this system of banning performance enhancing drugs, is anything but honest and transparent.

And harmful to the health of the athletes that are using these drugs.

Harmful, because they have, and will continue to use these drugs, in an unregulated and un-monitored manner.

Of course there is no way of knowing, but perhaps the recent tragedy of that Pro Wrestler, who was taking steroids to maintain his position at the top of his chosen field, who murdered his wife and son, in a case that's acknowledged to be unchecked 'roid rage', could have been completely avoided, if his use of steroids could have been overseen by a team of medical professionals, instead of using those drugs in an underground manner.

And that's just one case.

Yes, there are major health risks in using performance enhancing drugs, but isn't that the deal Pro Athletes sign up for when they pursue their sports careers? Just playing at that level, without using drugs, already carries with it a plethora of physical risks, and adding the use of these drugs hardly diminishes the pre-existing physical dangers that are inherent in a sports career.

Eliminate the drug testing, but make it mandatory for those that are using these drugs do it in an informed manner, with regulation and monitoring.

You're certainly not going to stop athletes, in this money driven culture of ours, to stop using performance enhancing drugs. Not when the difference for them is that an athlete who is performing at their natural peak can get signed for $2 million a year, and with the use of these drugs, they can command a $20 million a year sports contract.

If they want to use the drugs fine, let them, and have them sign a waiver with their health insurance companies that if health problems arise for them done the road, then they'll have to pay more for their health care.

Now, as far as preserving the innocence of the children go, and having their sports role models set a life example for them goes, well, what do you prefer?

Lying to the kids instead?

Is that a better strategy?

By that I mean, how do reconcile telling children:

"Performance enhancing drugs = bad, bad, bad"

And then turn around and pump 6 million American kids a day, every day, full of a form of amphetamine, known as Ritalin, so that they will perform better in school?

Don't know about you, but I find that pair of statements just as baffling, and confusing, as when a parent smacks their kid and tells them to "never hit anybody smaller than you."

Kids are real good at spotting contradictions, and tend not trust those who present them with conflicting statements.

Now, I'd like you to imagine that a drug comes to market, with little or no side-effects, that vastly improves human memory.

Would you want the guy that prepares your taxes to not take it? Or your attorney that's representing you in a capital crime case in which you've been falsely accused? Or your kid that is studying for his SATs, because that would give them an "unfair" advantage?

Do you know reasonable person that wouldn't want that kind of chemical support with so much at stake?

Again, I find it amazing that the ones in the media that are now dog-piling on Barry Bonds are the same ones that have had plastic surgery to improve their appearance, (Greta van Sustern you have a call on the White Courtesy Telephone), or are botoxed to the max.

It'd be funny if it didn't feel like 21st Century Version of the Salem Witch Trials. Freaking Puritans never left American culture, and I wish they would.

Supposedly, the indictment is based on documents taken from BALCO Labs, which shows a positive result for anabolic steroids.

I'm wondering how that negates Bonds' statement that he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs. It would have to be established that he had grounds for a reasonable belief that this is what Conte/Anderson were offering, and that he was actually informed of the results.

And the 'It's All Because of Steroids' angle reduces a home run to a 'Ugh! Me Caveman, Hit Ball!' stunt, instead of a complex interaction involving the pitch, timing, hand-eye coordination, and so on.

But if Barry gets the maximum sentence, I'd like to know why Scooter ain't warming a cell ...

Glen Beck is calling 911 truthers terrorist. Whitehouse will not do proper investigation and even lee hamiliton call the commission report a whitewash. Why are people who want to know the truth being branded as lunitics when we feel everything that has taken down this country started that day of Sept 11.

Actually TV is making me read more. Right now I'm reading at the same time The Phantom Detective, Capt. Underpants, The Lone Ranger and Beowulf.

The best way to make Russert look better is smear KY jelly on the camera lens.

And then shove the camera up his ass?

I knew someone would get it.

I'll clinch my cheeks.

I always heard they Vaselined up the lens to film the Doris Day show when she was on.

I knew someone would get it.

If you really wanna be sick, check out Bush ("phony") crying on Veteran's Day, over at YouTube. If you try to post a comment, the nazis at YouTube won't post it unless it's as nauseating as the ones you'll find there now. Grab a sack to be sick in, and click here:

GOP Warns the DNC of Backlash

Who is the GOP pointing to who will "lead this backlash" against the DNC? that's the problem with the GOP nonsense. Next time the GOP claims that there is going to be a "backlash" against the DNC, ask the GOP to identify -- by demographic -- who that group is. It doesn't exist. If the DNC dares to stand up to the President and GOP:

- DNC Membership are not going to switch sides, and support the GOP.

- GOP Membership is not going to leave teh DNC to support the GOP.

There is no "other group" that is going to "newly oppose" the DNC if the DNC dares to stand up to the President or GOP.

Fundamentally, when is the GOP giving "campaign advice" -- that the DNC is listening to -- to the DNC?

Here's the reality: GOP Reminders to the DNC of a "Blacklash" Are Illusions

GOP Leadership Problem's picture

The "non committed voters" are non-committed because they do not want to side with losers. if the DNC caves, that's losing; as long as the GOP continues to bungle it operations in Iraq, and the DNC refuses to throw this problem at the GOP -- where it belongs -- the non-committed are not inclined to support either the GOP or DNC.

I do both. Whatever. Besides, don't tell me you bought into the Young Republican hooey (Real Men Don't Eat Quiche). It was the 80's; they were laying the ground work.

"1. Barry Bonds is an African-American hero and the Bush administration is determined to take him down. They have not gone after the Caucasian slugger Mark McGwire, for whom rumors have been floated longer than for Bonds."

McGuire did not break the most sacred record in baseball/sports. Plus, when you go after someone in a situation like this, you go after the top dog, not a lesser guy.

Black people, especially those with money and standing, really need to lay low, under this administration.

They are making a habit of going after blacks in this country, just for the fun of it
