Wapo Thinks the Way to "Understand" Hillary is Through Her Pantsuits
By bluegal Sunday Dec 09, 2007 4:15pm
This so-called "journalism" is really beyond belief. Under the heading "Understanding the leading Presidential Candidates" The Washington Post allows Robin Givhan free rein to talk about "how many pantsuits does Hillary Clinton have in her closet" and "does she ever wear them in the same combination more than once?".
But Ms. Givhan really goes overboard (I am not. making. this. up.) when she refers to the hues within the wardrobe and refers to "Clinton-the-human-color-wheel."
Taylor Marsh says it better than I could:
Time to call your editor, Robin, the first female to have a prayer at the presidency is obviously above your pay grade. Read more...

Maybe she should put on a cowboy outfit and wander around pressers pruning the chaff from flower arrangements. If they're gonna poke fun at her clothes anyway ...
What did she have to say about the other candidates clothing? If she did have something to say about the others clothes, I wouldn't care about that either.
Fortunately this writer understands what is at stake in this race. (snark)
I am not a Hillary fan but I don't give a flying f**k how many pantsuits she has and in how many colors. I guess she could wear the same one all the time like Ann Coulter and her black dress.
When you look at the republican field of crooks and liars it's laughable that this is all they can come up with.
Haircuts and pantsuits vs fraud, corruption etc ect etc
Well given the continued horror story's that continue to poor out of this administration, it acctually made me smile to think about color wheels for a moment
I'm sure they'll follow this up with a nice article asking how many pairs of magical underwear are in Romney's closet.
I think she should put on a flight suit, stuff it with a sock or two...they would luv her then.
Richard @ 6:
LOL I was just thinking that.
I bet bush and cheney would look great in orange pant suits :)
Never fear, the Washington Post's Perry Bacon is currently on the job writing a front page article about how he's heard rumors on the internets(sic) and right wing talk radio that Hillary Clinton wears a burka.
Richard @ 6:
Dang it! That's sooooo much better than a cowboy outfit. Apparently my ability to think deeply about costumes is befuddled.
NOTE:
It's free rein, not "free reign."
That one always drives me up the wall.
And while we're at it, here's another one:
It's shoo-in, not "shoe-in."
oh thanks fixing it now. -- BG
Will the MSM start talking about Rudy's dresses?
If this woman wants to do some serious reporting, she should try to discover how many ties John Edwards has and how much each cost. ;)
Then I want to know how many sweaters Mitt Romney owns. ;)
That should keep her busy and out of the way until after the election.
Finrod @ 1:
She'll need to carry a chain saw like bush to cut the brush. ;)
Perhaps Senator Clinton shoud wear Barbara Bush pearls and an apron. Geesh!
pantsuits, hips, haircuts, headbands, thighs...wtf as usual.
why doesn't anyone wonder why allll alllll of the male candidates and all males serving in public office look like clones?
the nation of the free individual maverick who speaks only for himself--looks like a gozillian others who say the same thing?
does this 'reporter' think the brotherhood is threatened?
the status quo?
girl reporter, if you want the frat way, why the hell aren't you in your husband's kitchen wearing a frilly dress, high-heels and a pearl necklace while you cook for your hubby? he won't care about your pantsuit. put down the silly career idear and get out of your pantsuit and into the bedroom and or kitchen of your better half.
I think I have seen Rudy wear more dresses than I have seen Hillary wear.
I'm not a big fan of pant suits, but I don't care if Hillary wants to wear pj's on the campaign trail. I'm more concerned about what the candidates will do if elected than I am about their fashion style.
TM @ 11:
We have had "free rain" for most of the day. It's wet out there.
Gekke @ 8:
OMG.....I think I just split a gut!
I met the Clintons (Bill, Hillary, Chelsea) when they arrived to be part of our Christmas eve service at our Church. First, it is really creepy when the Secret Service show up. They look and act just like they do in the movies. Second, I thought the whole family was much better looking in person. Third, they exuded a soft radiant glow about them. Bill in the center of a crowd stood out like a beacon. Wow.
This and her pantsuits - HC has my vote.
I was never a big fan of the Clintons but I'm pulling for Hillary because she can win. I don't buy the Rovian spin that Hillary's nomination would be a dream come true for the Rethugs. Take my word for it, they are scared shitless of Hillary as the nominee, because they have thrown everything they have at her, almost all lies and innuendo, but she's still standing, and they know that she can kick their asses. If any Rethug were given the same treatment as Hillary - or any Dem for that matter - they would have probably committed suicide by now. They have nothing to throw at her anymore. . Think about it - what are they going to use, Whitewater? Bill's penis? A failed health care plan, when the Rethugs don't even want to THINK about universal healthcare? Iraq? Yeah, I can see the Republican Party running against Hillary on their Iraq policies! YUM! And if there is one thing that Clinton can do that other candidates can't is to pull divergent groups together among Dem voters in order to sink the Republican Party. But the main reason I would like to see Hillary win is so she can exact absolute revenge against all the right-wingers who have persecuted her over the past 16+ years. We may not be able to get a Fairness Doctrine for the media now, but with Hillary and a Dem Congress it could happen, because Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, Savage and the rest could never survive if they had to give equal time. And I wonder how the Washington Post will react when they are put in the back of the White House press room because Clinton is tired of being asked questions about her cleavage, cackles and pantsuits?
Dom @ 21:
I'm with you on the scared repugs, Dom, but HC is a corporatist and won't be giving the country the medicine it needs.
Rudy dresses like two-bit harlot and this is what's reported? I've never gave a damn about her clothes. I bet this is a topic on Spitball.
She is the fashion editor for god's sake. What do you expect her to talk about?
TM @ 11:
Irregardless, wee ale no the pointe off the massage.
;-)
ANGRY? DISGUSTED?
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

Agnes Najmi @ 24:
Is she the political fashion editor?
I think I have seen Rudy wear more dresses than I have seen Hillary wear.
To be fair, he really has the legs for them.
But THE important question is: Does she look presidential?
f the Mussolini-esque Mr. Blackwells
Hey, give her a break...ya gotta cover those "cankles" somehow
Agnes Najmi @ 24:
talk about paris hilton and the other shallow half wits at fashion shows. Or talk about the fashion choices of ALL of the presidential candidates.
Nothing like a "journalist" who asks in the first paragraph "how many pantsuits does Hillary Clinton have in her closet?" and then fails to answer the question.
BTW, how many dresses does Rudy have in his closet? Nine hundred eleven.
Thanks for the comments Dom (#21). I love it she drives the right wing crazy and I hope she wins. The Financial Times just had a front page spread on her commenting on DOHA (international trade) with a half page photo. How many Republicans have even heard of Doha. Bush? Not likely. And I liked the article - someone has to wear the pants.
How 'bout doing something about all this CRAP!!! JOIN --> www.StopBigMedia.com
Dont care about the outrage. That pantsuit is a crime against humanity. Is she blind?
A. I can't stand Madam Clinton and won't vote for her. Period. But...
B. This business of judging candidates based on their clothing is shallow, meaningless, and annoying (remember MoDodo and Howard Dean's sweater?). But...
C. At least that kind of superficial style commentary IS what Givhan is paid to do. MoDodo--not so much. She's supposed to be doing political commentary. I thought.
Hate both clintons but this is poor journalism.
What is your take on how to fix the water problem we are having?
Dom @ 21:
F*ck that. God, I couldn't care less about "Clinton revenge". Do you think there might just be more important things to deal with?? Well?
That kind of f*cked up thinking drives me over the f*cking edge. Let's move on shall we??
Oh, and to ask a question that will most certainly be asked by the Very Important and Serious Journamalists of the Very Important and Serious Washington Post: does global warming make my ass look big?
Johnny2Bad @ 40:
Its almost bad as "if Hillary's the nominee , I'm voting republican." We still have better choices!
And, yes, I do believe revenge is appropriate. I want revenge for the rape of my country over the past 7 years, especially against a rabid and biased corporate press that ws and is in many ways mainly responsible for enabling an incompetent moron and his congressional lackeys to destroy our nation. To put it bluntly, I want fucking blood.
Who cares what Paris Hilton wears. and who cares what Rudy, Mitt or the rest of them wears.
Robin Givhan is a FASHION writer, who writes articles for the STYLE section. Please people, lighten up.
That is one butt ugly pantsuit.
Dom @ 21:
thank god now we dont need primaries its been decided!
Gekke @ 8:
Agreed! Maybe with the accessory-de-jour, the black hood.
fiver @ 33:
Awesome Rudy comment. I agree, though, I'm still left wondering how many she has.
Real political kat @ 46:
Totally agree. I would not want to have a beer with her if she was wearing that.
Obama bringing in Oprah now defines Obama for what he himself thinks about his elect-ability. Its obvious Obama does not have the self confidence to believe in his own motto to get elected to win on his own merit. It surprises me; no more like confounds me that Obama severely, rebuked the “Baby Boomers”. Obama said they are the problem with America today and we can’t wait till we are rid of them.” Lol, now he wants their vote, yikes. What real time hypocrisy we are watching is truly the very reason why we are in such a stupid situation in politics. One wonders if Hillary will use that political snit in an ad. To be sure the Neo-Nuts will lash out she is unfair in a negative champagne to Obama, when seriously folks Obama insulted and wiped out in a most deplorable way a whole voting bock he needs. The dunder heads in this political analysis is amazing.
I’m glad Hillary just brought in her mother, daughter, and Bill. It was humbling, but watching the hoopla across the Media the sensational talk that Hillary is sunk only forged what solidly is expected for all channels from Hannity to Limbaugh, and the nay sayers in this blog, Obama is surging and Hillary is sunk.
It’s very amusing to witness the Gay critics approach to this so called momentum because of the Mainstream Media star Oprah. Bet your ballot Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and a host of Black leadership are on sidelines not feeling too good about her support coming out now. Or, even though she said she is doing this grandstanding on her own, is Oprah really a Mainstream Media tool where we are all witness to the most manipulated black billionaire in America. Was she convinced by the media that is part of her IMUS contract to create controversy, to do it or loose that fat pay check?
Whats really funny is CNN has a pole out were Obama wants a vote as whether Oprah should be his Vice President. WOW. If Oprah picks up your mortgage I think she will win on that platform.
I think Hillary has a better plan than this approach.
I am so grateful that Hillary's PIE (Pantsuit Intelligence Estimate) has finally been brought to light.
The real question is how many dresses Rudy has in his closet and does he ever wear them in the same combination more than once?
Psssssssst!! Hillary!.....show some skin girl!! Get Dr. Phil as yer vice Preznit!! Good God this election is turning into a big farce, like the last two Bush terms.
I hate Hillary with a passion, but I couldn't care less about what she wears. If she looked hot like Vikki Blows then I'd want to see her in different outfits, but she's a cold fish and so what she wears is not important. That is not to say I do not appreciate any media outlet that attacks her or trivializes her.
We are coming to the end soon and Obama is within striking range. I have given up on Edwards because of poll numbers and just want him to drop out and pledge for his voters to vote for Obama. This way we can wipe out Hillary and perhaps have a Obama/Edwards ticket. It is war now. Let's beat the bitch.
joze46 @ 49:
maby we could all get a new car from opreeee!!!!!!
id like a blue one!
i don't ever watch oprah, but she can turn a nothing book into a bestseller
i think these rallies might be able to push obama up past clinton
and think about it obama has oprah and all hillary has got is ....
her corrupt self her corrupt cheating husband and their ugly kid
8 years in office and what do the workers got? NAFTA and no jobs
8 years in office and what change in health care? nothing
8 years in office and what change in the drug war? more people in jail for weed
constant scandal and an illegal war against Serbia
enough with the damn clinton royal family already
momma allways said life was like a box of chocklets you never know what your going to get!
To be fair, she'd probably get less of this crap if she stuck with respectable black, navy blue and charcoal instead. I know she shouldn't have to change how she dresses to get the media to focus on anything vaguely important, but somehow it seems like the only way we'll get them to shut the hell up about her stupid pantsuits.
or was that a box of chickens!
Aw look another idiot posting about Givhan writing about Clinton's dress. Here's guessing you're completely unfamiliar with Givhan. She won a Pulitzer. She's written about numerous powerful folks' dress (remember the column about the now chief justice?).
Yes, a black woman hired by a black man can write things that are relevant, that matter, and that are recognized as the best criticism in the press. Not without extreme sniping, apparently.
Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but this outpouring of naivete marks those ignorant of how politics works. Image doesn't matter. Please. Latte, anyone?
When are all these macho journalists going to stop treating the only woman in a completely sexist way? If this is the best men have to offer, maybe we do need a woman in the WH.
Robin
Your mean comments on Hillary beckons me to vote for heer.
Dom @ 21:
Dom @ 43:
With an attitude like that, it's a shocker you're against the republicans. There is corruption on both sides of the aisle, and it's no victory at all if all you care about is "your side" winning. Wake up and calm down. Your rage isn't getting you to see clearly, it's making you lose sight of why we have a president anyway.
What? Is there no other news story out there?
How about the CIA destroying evidence on torture? Or the NIE Lie Report on Iran? Come on, even you righties must object to the non-issue that THIS story is.
All I can say about this piece of nothing news, is ...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
you have to assume that the candidates have staff that handles their costuming.
Did none of you look at that picture closely? Fer cryin' out loud. She is wearing a hospital smock, probably given to her for her appearance. If you look closely, it is obvious that she is making an appearance at a hospital. I expect this type of impulsive, short sightedness from a fashion reporter, just to get a rise out of the readership, but we are supposed to be more thorough and observant in our reading and logic.
Click on the picture, and you'll see what I mean.
budda @ 56:
Oprah can turn a fake autobiography into a bestseller & then act all offended when it blows up in her face.
Oprah can turn a fake engagement to another rich celebrity into a neverending fake engagement.
Oprah can insult all US school children as being "unworthy of her largesse" & open a school in a foreign country where, grandly overseen from a great distance, child abuse suddenly starts happening.
Oprah can get corporate sponsors to donate cars & other expensive stuff, none of which costs her mega-bottomline a dime, to hand out to greedy schmucks in her audience who stupidly think she's being personally "generous."
So much for the MSM's week-long sanctification of Oprah the multi-millionaire celebrity talk show host & King-maker wannabe. 29,000 in an 80,000 stadium on a warm sunny day to see Oprah. Not the candidate but a TV talk show celebrity.
If Obama doesn't think he can win an elective office on his own merit & plans without St. Oprah & her well-known corporate millions, he should realize he's not the only one who thinks that way.
Strong-arming potential audience members into padding his mailing & volunteer lists before they were allowed to see a TV celebrity also doesn't make his candidacy look very viable on its own.
If only Obama could've sent Oprah to vote for him on the nonbinding Iran resolution while he chose instead to practice for the NH debate. Such an "important vote" & he has no record to speak of, reminiscent of his days in the Illinois legislature. Vote present or don't vote at all. When asked for your legislative records, claim you didn't keep any or they were lost or your dog ate them (then remember to backdate your dog purchase). Luckily for him with his record, he has Oprah & her corporate millions to distract from all the really important things.
Bay dialog writes in her most recent book that Hillary can't make decisions because of her many hairdos. She asserted on TV that most middle aged women have landed on a hairdo that they like and this is her contribution to the dialog about who will be the next leader of the free world. Go figure.
u guys need to lighten up. robin givhan is wapo's fashion journalist- in fact she's considered one of the best in any national paper. she's done tongue in cheek spots like this before with major socio-political happenings like Jack Abramoff's ill-fitting suits, Scooter's attire during his trial among other things. but mainly she does just fashion week and occasionally columns. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/03/25/LI200503...
in fact it looks like she's doing a fashion dossier on each of the candidates. john edwards is getting skewered today. yes it's shallow. yes it's inconsequential. but it's not meant to be a serious piece anyways. just wanted to give a little perspective
tyree @ 54:
whose leadership is al sharpton and jesse jackson? they're only relevant to the media. in the eloquent words of jay z on his most excellent new album American Gangster,
And if Al Sharpton is speaking for me
Somebody get him the word and tell him i don't approve
Tell him i'll remove the curses
If you tell me our schools gon' be perfect
When Jena 6 don't exist
Tell him THAT's when i'll stop saying bitch---BIIITCH!
Remember, for Givhan and her ilk, pantsuits (like $400 haircuts) are IMPORTANT. Unlike all that confusing stuff about foreign policy and healthcare, pantsuits are something she really understands. To her, image is what counts, and the way to judge a candidate is how they go about creating an image.
I can picture her tossing and turning at night, fretting over whether she needs to buy more pantsuits since if Clinton gets elected then they may become the fashion standard -- and whether or not she should plan on mixing and matching or does she need to pair up the tops and bottoms. Important matters.
pissed off patricia @ 13:
Who cares if Laua is never seen in a dress, or Hillary wears pantsuits. This woman needs to report something we can can get our teeth in.
Kucinich's wife has her thighs up Hillary.
Do they ever make fun of how many identical, dark suits a male politician keeps in his closet? No?
Didn't think so.
I wonder if clinton ever wares a dress always in pants suits dresses like a male.
wapo thinks like a good german newspaper.
The NORMALIZATION of a CANDIDATE.
Hillary hails from privilege…. She intellectually understands the needs of disenfranchised, struggling Americans, but she has no natural bond with the soul of ordinary men and women — she’s really never had to get her hands dirty day-to-day — never been on hard times. She can imagine it: but never been there.
Hillary’s establishment elitism was recently demonstrated on the campaign trail when she stopped for lunch at a diner, hustled a photo-op off the old waitress — a working granny on hard times — got the press she needed, and waltzed off without leaving a tip… NPR reported the faux pas. It’s good of her to stop down across the tracks once in awhile — slummin’ — can’t stay too long.
Hillary really has no idea what it’s like in the trenches; desperate campaign handlers are pullin’ all the tricks to find image-magic touching the hearts and minds of salt-of-the-earth voters.
She’s trotted-out in fashions designed by alienated upper-crust Democrats — the same method and means they tried with Lord Fauntleroy-Gore: different doos, casual costumes, and feel good down-home family snapshots — Madison Ave. makeover artists dressin’ her up, and dressin’ her down as class-occasions may require — revision upon revision, fooling no one but Hillary. Al Gore lost the Presidency not because of the Supreme Court decision, but because American voters rejected the advertisement — he was not one of us — ordinary Americans don’t like being patronized: déjà vu.
Hillary’s a Wellesley woman. Wellesley is a first-class liberal arts college for intellectually predisposed women — a select brand who generally shoo-in with the fortunate family genre. You won’t find many WalMart cashiers and diner waitresses who were educated at Wellesley.
She got her political break by design — Party connections. NY Senator Pat Moynihan (D) stepped aside into retirement, Hillary stepped foward. It was a gimme — she didn’t work for it.
And when her credentials and/or politics are challenged by other candidates and/or the media, she pouts, gets huffy as if treated unfairly — like a spoiled little girl… then valiant Willy jumps in to defend her honor - fighting her battles….Zzzzzz.
MORE THAN ANYTHING, Hillary wants to be the first woman President… some voters don’t see any reason why she needs to be the first woman President.
Mob speculators promise: with Hillary we get a two-fer. If Bill goes down with another heart attack, she could end up all alone leading America. What then?!!
The question: Is Hillary qualified to lead the country at this time in history?
The answer: Nobody ever gave Barack Obama nothin’…. He is the American story, he worked for it — what you see is what you get.
