Did Chris Matthews Offer To Campaign For Hillary Clinton In PA?

Chris Matthews talked with Hillary Clinton's campaign chair, Terry McAuliffe, on today's Hardball about her victories in yesterday's primaries and the future of the campaign. Matthews is from Pennsylvania and he's all fired up about the upcoming primary in his home state -- but I think he may have gone just a bit too far in his enthusiasm.

In this clip Matthews and McAuliffe discuss the issue of Senator Clinton's tax returns and whether or not she will release them before the Pennsylvania primary next month and things suddenly take a strange turn:

Matthews: "I just want to do a town meeting in Pennsylvania at the college of Senator Clinton's choice."

McAuliffe: "We should do that."

Matthews: "It would be great. Big university."

McAuliffe: "I agree with you."

Matthews: "I won't name them now cause they'll get mad at us if we don't do them, but there are so many great schools in.. [snip] Don't forget Scranton where Hillary Clinton spent all her summers. ...Maybe the University of Scranton, a big Jesuit school."

McAuliffe: "We should do that..."

Does that sound like Matthews is offering to campaign for Senator Clinton in Pennsylvania to you?

Something tells me if he was saying the same thing for Obama this post would not be here..

Tweety's brother is the Republican county chair in Montgomery County, PA, which is the Philadelphia suburbs.

Hillary Clinton. Chris Matthews new hard on!

Why does C&L's like to give so much attention to this twit?

Tweety and street corners, that sounds promising for fund raising.

Not really. But he does sound like a dick.

no

no

Sounds like he wants to sponsor the town meeting? I was a little flabbergasted.

C&L hasn't endorsed a candidate. If Matthews had offered the same to Obama we would have reported it the same way.

have they put something new in aftershave ?

Wow, working the refs really works with Matthews doesn't it? Who knew he was so easy.

So much for Obama's pillows getting fluffed huh? Wow, a little criticism of the media's unfairness towards Hillary and the game turns around 180 degrees. Now they want to campaign for her.

Hillary, are you comfortable? Can I get you anything?

No it doesn't sound like he's wanting to campaign for her. Sounds like he wants to be part of the story, though. I'm sure he'd be just as happy being there and asking her inane questions to make her look bad. Or maybe just to ask inane questions because that's all he can do.

Tweety's McCain manlove ! caution its sickening.

Campaigning for ANYONE is going to tough for Matthews since his head is so far up McCain's ass.

Does this sound like Tweety wants to campaign for Hillary. Um.....yes.

Not only is Tweety a phony, but he constantly spouts out inaccuracies. Tonight he gushed at McAuliffe, another phony, and said "you guys win all the Tuesday races and Obama wins weekends." Was Wisconsin a weekend primary? Virginia? Maryland? Iowa? I don't know how Olbermann can sit next to this idiot for 3+ hours.

Is that why he gets the feeling up his leg listening to Obama? Get real.

Terry McAuliffe is that loser dinosaur who goes on Hugh Hewitt's talk sho
and makes a stupid fool of himself. He must know where the bones are
buried because he keeps popping back up again.

I have no idea. That "conversation" was so scattered, fragmented, and disarticulated that I could barely tell what language he was trying to speak. Seems awfully important to him that he be buddies with his interview subject - much more important that actually interviewing him.

As far as the offer, it sounded like an offer to cover a town hall meeting in PA, rather than to sponsor one. But then again, I'm inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt. I even believed Hillary once or twice.

Lefties are always bitching when Tweety gets on Hillary's case. Now you're bitching when (you perceive) he's willing to campaign for her. WTF? --- I saw the bit with McAuliffe. I'm not a Tweety fan but my take was, simply, he wants her on his show. --- BTW, I love it when Olbermann looks askance at the stuff Matthews says.

And yet supposed Dems STILL want to vote for her. Wow.

The whole thing was creepy - I give him credit for trying some tough questions but he couldn't constrain his mancrush on McAulliffe and kept getting diverted, just as tough follow up questions were due. For instance, the clip followed the tax return question - the follow up is "but you haven't released even previous years' taxes which you could do very quickly." Instead he gets all mancrushy...

You should have seen the look on Olbermann's face when Tweets declared
McCain the next president. He looked totally disgusted in the knowledge

"No."

Hey Chris... come to Kutztown University. We will all be waiting for you. Look for the sign that says Kutztown Democratic Club. That's where you'll find us. We had a big welcoming party for George W Bush back in 2004. We can have one for you, too. We'll even make sure that there is some C & W on jukebox.

Perhaps because he's one of the more egregious nutjobs on the air. Look at the title of this blog. We really should add nutjobs.

And we don't cover him as much as the blog Sweet Jesus I hate Chris Matthews.

BTW Tweety, about that town hall meeting. Is that like a televised debate where you just don't invite the other candidate?

bill has been collecting $$ big time in the past 7 years. vote for hillary and watch her cover up the bush crimes like bill did.

A quick look at the blogs confirmed for me that they're STILL reviewing the caucusing that went on in Texas. I must say, I find all this endless, open talk about Texans caucusing themselves to be highly inapproriate on these progressive blogs I love so dearly. Thoughts of Texans caucusing and whooping it up, shoutin' "EVERTHING'S bigger in Texas! Yee-hawww!!!!" while performing umentionable electoral acts to each other is something I find quite unsettling (and even illegal?) for a public blog. Heck, even Karl Rove pretended to adhere to the penal codes, while actually spewing his own form of heated, sticky contemp all over them like some sort of volcanic ejaculate. I'm no prude and know I'm not alone in this opinion: I solicited the thoughts of my good friends Jack Hoff and Mike Hunt, and they readily agreed that caucusing, like wide-stanced toe tapping, is something that's best done behind closed restroom doors, in private (airports), and I'll pay no heed whatsoever to self-serving hoots of "Don't mess with Texas...caucusing!" Euphemise it however you want, even down to "weapons of mass-caucusing program related activities" or "Islamo-caucist extremism," but it's still just one big steaming pile of machaca to me that shouldn't be aired in pubic.

bleve @ 4:

wondering the same thing here.

As a resident of PA and a senior looking ahead to my graduation from Pitt in a month I think a town hall meeting at a university would be an excellent and enjoyable idea - an audience with viewpoints and concerns that differ extrodinarly from the typical electorate. I also have to say I am completely pumped that we have a say here on the 22nd of April. I hope each candidate makes it to one of the many campuses here in Pittsburgh - we just had Rove on the 4th of March we should at least host Clinton and/or Obama.

Just curious. Has anyone been over to Americablog tonight. John is deleting and editing comments left and right of anyone who disagrees with him about Clinton. It's gotten really ugly. I've had 3 posts (no profanity) deleted. Hell, I'm not either a Clinton or Obama supporter, but it's like Russiablog over there tonight.

Why not Ed Schultz campaigns for Obama every day on WCPT AM 820?

Yet, Barack Obama supporters will not admit they have been had. Since Hillary Clinton announced she would be running for president, Chris Matthews has been all over her. He devoted 90% of almost every show to bashing her. He enlisted the whole MSNBC staff to join in. He saved Obama untold money that would otherwise be used to attack Clinton. You would think Obama was his man. He is not. John McCain is.

That tells me one thing. He campaigned for Obama because he felt Obama would be an easier target to beat in the general election. That is a fact so obvious a blind man could see it. In fact, check out much of the so-called Obama supporters on MSNBC; I am sure you will find they are reporting news in favor of McCain.

I argued when it was happening, and I will argue now: The news media should not be influencing the elections in the way they have. They have no right to try and manipulate dynamics that would lead to any Party's defeat. The media should not be picking our presidents. If they have a presidential favorite, they should be made to state that up front. Instead, the use a form of passive support or indirect approach.

I too was taken back by Clinton's choice of words when she chose McCain over Obama. That really bothered me. I am not sure where I stand. I am a lot more sure I am not at all happy with the current right-wing media dynamics. I have never scene it as manipulating as it is today.

He's, like, on ecstasy and in love with everything he sees.

This clip is misleading. As I remember the next part of the conversation, Matthews said Clinton and Obama - get them both there and let the students ask both of them questions.

Matthews is a toad but this post is misleading.

Between the spitting and the screaming I cannot watch him. Yet, like a roadside accident, I find myself flipping over there every once in awhile just to see this fool pontificate and reference old movie clips while attempting to make some obscure point that is lost for the rest of us. The man is a total ass and yet he is pulling down some big bucks to sit there and look stupid. I wonder if he and his family know that throughout the blogasphere he is known as "Tweety"? Ha!!!

Steve Charb @ 44:

He's, like, on ecstasy and in love with everything he sees.

Ehh, I just get the impression he's in love with himself. Matthews seems to regard himself as a special member of an American aristocracy -- the simultaneous player and referee. He gets to hob nob with all the big politicos, see if he can catch them saying something he doesn't like, and opine ad nauseam as though anyone really cares what he has to say. And he gets to do it all on TV. He thinks of himself as A-list, salivates over his invitation to the A-list party, and then wants everyone to watch him hold himself out as better than his hosts.

Was he offering to campaign for Clinton? I don't think so. I think he just thinks he's such a popular guy that he's somehow entitled to host a town hall meeting with Clinton. He probably thinks the same thing of himself for McCain and Obama. And Bush. And all the world's leaders and celebrities.

He's a petulant little clown, and ought to be yanked off television yesterday.

Tweety does those "College Tour" shows with the candidates, on a campus of their choice ... but he did them before the primaries started. This smacks of never having gotten Hillary on the show, and "better late than never" exuberance about a big "get", finally ... except not only is it TOO LATE to do it now, but a case of real favoritism --or in his personal case, a 180-degree turn making two wrongs/no right. He should have set the context for all those who don't know ... but then again that wold be context. It DID come off sounding bizarrely weird to throw a rally for a candidate.

We in Pennsylvania are embarrassed enough that Tweety is from here. Please stop reminding us.

I also turned off Stephanie Miller....Randi HATES Hillary....Thom is the MAN!

Is this kinda like an endorsement? Are news anchors (and I use the term loosely) allowed to do this? I know he has done the college thing before with McCain and others, but this sounds like campaigning to me.

If Clinton loses the nomination, Chris Matthews will have such an orgasm that he'll blow the top off of both heads. Anyone who describes Bush as being noble is mentally ill. I've suspected that he is schizophrenic, because he has brief moments when he regresses back to his liberal days. He keeps pushing the lie that Hillary was being evasive on 60 Minutes about Obama's religion. He's also the prick that started the notion of the Bradley effect in the New Hampshire primary and prodded Robinson to run with it. He's a goddamn race baiter first class.

Oh, come on. He doesn't want to CAMPAIGN for her. He wants to ask her idiotic questions to play "gotcha" and make her look bad.

Tweety HATES Hillary. He had a graphic showing her with Devil's horns, fer cryin' out loud.

Chris Matthews probably means doing a "Hardball" episode in which he sits on-stage with a candidate and asks questions of the candidate and then lets the audience ask questions.

He's done it with other candidates.

I thought this was the guy that famously said (about Hillary) "I hate her. I hate everything she stands for."

Nope. Sorry. Not seeing it.

No. Some sort of sabotage, probably. Even that whore Matthews couldn't turn on a dime like that.

This will be the band wagon Matthews will jump on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQFtRxubRyA

More of Matthews braggadocio! He wants important people to think he has some influence in his home state. You should also hear him pine about how he has always wanted to be a senator. His ratings are consistently one of the lowest on cable. He has been mad to apologize for unseemly remarks. This guy is so out-of-touch he thinks he's a mover and a shaker! He also thinks he's a genius.

Does that sound like Matthews is offering to campaign for Senator Clinton in Pennsylvania to you?

I don't know how in the name of all that's good and decent you came to that conclusion. It was an offer for one of those hardball college meetings that Matthews does.

WHy, why, why does this moron still have a show?

Sorry, I can't draw the same conclusion from Tweety's offer as C & L. You never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde will show up at the town hall meeting.

greg @ 45:

Wrong. Matthews never once mentioned Obama being a part of the town meeting he wanted to hold. I watched that segment all the way through, there was no mention of both candidates attending this town meeting.

No, it was an offer to hold an exclusive town meeting for one candidate. There was no such offer for Obama. Matthews was out of bounds here. Had he made the same offer to Obama we would have reported it the exact same way.

Again, this is wrong. I just watched the segment again and at no time does Matthews refer to Obama being a part of the town meeting. "...it would be great - yea - get both of them up here and let the students ask them questions..." -- does not exist anywhere in the segment. Besides, even if Matthews had mentioned Obama's name in there, do you really think that he would agree to appear at the college of Clinton's choice where the crowd would clearly be stacked against him? Would Clinton do the same? Of course not, that would be ridiculous. If Matthews had suggested anywhere in the segment that they hold town meetings for BOTH candidates, I wouldn't have written this post and again, if he had made the same exclusive offer to Obama this story would have been reported in the exact same way.

Tweety wants to pretend to be Hillary's Pa?

Tweety HATES Hillary. He had a graphic showing her with Devil's horns, fer cryin' out loud.

Bingo! He only wants his Hillary's total attention on HIM at an event totally of his own making. That way, he can uninterruptedly ask his patented spittle-encrusted Gotcha Q's like "Panties or thongs? LOOK AT ME, HILLARY, AND ANSWER THE QUESTION!" and "Is that Chinese clapping you do or what's that all about?" Didn't get any such impression that he wanted to campaign for her. The rest of his insane babbling had to do with his neverending quest to win an Inside Roman Catholic Education trivia contest.

Tweety is a misogynist creep who has spent the better part of the year trashing Hillary so, NO he does not want to campaign for her. He was just kissing up to another man-love McAuliffe. I've now lost just about all the respect I had for his partner in this now, Keith Olberman. They both along with Rachael Maddow have their lips planted firmly on Obama's backside. The bias there has driven me away from MSNBC.

Yeah, it'll be even weirder when he tries to move the event to Massachusetts.

I've read many post here that brings up Clinton and her "endorsement" of McCain which MSNBC is also spinning. It's obvious that critical thinking skills are sorely lacking in our pundits but also in the voting public. What she is saying is that Obama will have a hard time against McCain because he is perceived as a moderate maverick with a lot of experience. She is correct there and I agree that Obama would probably have a tougher time than she would in defeating McCain. This is something else, just like the race-baiting that Tweety, Olberman, Maddow and Robinson are spinning daily. Do any of these losers want to campaign for Hillary - that would be a resounding NO> They want to crush her.

It's no longer called Americablog -Because America deserves the Truth.

It's now called Obamablog - Because America deserves Freeperville Left.

John Aravosis has gone round the bend and should be expecting the guys in white coats before long.

Give me a break. It's about ratings. He's trying to book a show that will draw viewers. He'll offer the same thing to Obama and McCain. The debate was MSNBCs biggest draw.

not to fear, tweety won't campaign for hillary unless she shaves her legs and pits for a year or so, gains 100 pounds in the face and belly, slaps on some aqua velva, sticks a stogy in her pie hole and starts mumbling incoherently at tweety. he needs to fall in love again.

This whole statement about Nafta is nott even true,,, soon your going to say when Obama live on the news telling reporters No one in his campaign meet with Canadians leader,,,than a few days later ,Obama back tracked,, ya they met but it not what was said,,,,, If Obama don’t know what his own top guys,,, he not going to be much of a leader, No one made Obama lied on tv,,, that all Obama,,, plain and simple,,, can’t blame Hilary,, for that,,, that why I am switching my Vote for Hilary…..

He can not win a big state no matter what anyone say He can not get elected with out winning a big state, and because he lied about Nafta, No matter how you cut it,, He lied on video that now one from his campaign meet with the canadians,, but ti was true, show you how barack going to run the show, and because of his wife
Michelle Obama is hurting Barack Campaign she need to get off the campaign trail,,, Really she look like Mike tyson with Hair for god sakes.

Barack is not going to win the presidency,,
He can not even win 1 big state,,, Everyone is caught up in this Barack Obama magic show, the democrats just gave this campaign away to the republicans, Barack will never see the white House only if he takes a tour,,, The Obama campaign
think if Hilary gone he will pick up the other half of the Democratic votes,,, that is where he is wrong,,,He will only pick up a third of Hilary votes, the there 2/3 well half of them are going to act like obama voter if obama don’t win they are not going to vote ,,, 1/3 of Hilary voter will not vote,,and the other third is like me I voted for Hilary
I am voting for Experience, which is Hilary,, if Hilary is pushed out ,, My vote like tens of thousands are going to vote for McCain,,, If Obama get Hilary to be her vice president,, Obama will still lose, but if Hilary win she will take the presidency Obama can be vice president,, so he can get On the job training ,,,, this is the only way its going to work,,, American people are so dumb,, thinking Obama got a shot, even tho he has not won a single big state it going to matter,, Even the Media is finally see that..
Who has more experience, well in order
1 Hilary
2 McCain,
3 Ron Paul
4 Barack
That sums it up right there, Hilary in this for the long haul She is fighting Barack , McCain & the Media and she still doing good,, She has half the democratic votes, LOL
Now that is funny,,,,, Do the math,,,

You guys are dense sometimes. He wants to Sponsor a Hardball College Tour show, like they always do, not campaign for her.

Tweety's weird ad all but, I mean really...
