Mitt Romney declared last night that he would jump at the chance to be vice president if Republican John McCain offered the number two slot.
"I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included," Romney said on Fox News Channel.

From what little we have here, it sounds more like the guy was trying to put the spotlight on him, when there hasn't been any focus on his being even a possibility. He can't even speak simply about it; he says

There are little pieces all around that suggest McCain might choose Romney. The two biggest are, firstly, that Romney dropped out very prematurely and very politically, saying that to do so would be the best move he could make to save the country from terrorism. It was the most calculating demise of any candidate I have ever seen. Secondly, McCain has Romney's name placed very prominently under his own on the JohnMcCain.com website. See the delegate counter? Alphabetically, Mitt Romney comes after Mike Huckabee whether by first name or last name, and Romney got fewer delegates than Huckabee. The placement of items likes this on a website are not done without thought. I would scrub the others' names as soon as I got the nomination unless I wanted to make it look like both my former opponent and I (seemingly) beat the next closest one. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe he just hates Huckabee more than Romney.
It is not up to McCain anymore. McCain will do as he's told
and Romney will be his running mate period. Romney will be
the defacto president if McCain is elected.

The most interesting part of that linked story are the comments from conservatives about who the best VP choice would be. None of them, as far as I can tell, came right out and said, "Eh, we're pretty well screwed for VPs just like we were for Presidential material." But the people they do think are qualified are some icky and scary people.
I'm really gonna enjoy this. With all these crazies vying for VP, no matter who McImGettinTooOldForThisShit picks, there's gonna be a bunch of repugs that are really pissed off.

The most important reason that I don't think he will choose Romney is that he doesn't need to. There's lots of perfectly lovely, proven, knee-jerk conservatives to choose from. Remember, Mitt has been conservative, moderate and a slightly liberal republican.....and that's just over the past 6 month.
