McCain says "it's tough, it's tough in some respects" to be proud of America
By Nicole Belle Saturday Jun 14, 2008 8:30amJumpin' Jehoshaphat, this man redefines the term "being confused." He just nicely obliterated the right wing's chances to smear Michelle Obama with that whole "she's proud for the first time" stupidity. Wasn't that nice of him?
The Politico: (h/t Jed Report)
So a man finally got a question into McCain and he had a very different sort of question.
The questioner noted that he had been educated at Princeton and Harvard and made more than $300,000 a year.
"How can I be proud of my country?" he asked.
Get it — he was mocking Michelle Obama and her statement earlier this year that her husband had for the first time in her life made her proud of her country.
Well, McCain either missed the joke or decided to ignore it and answer the question literally. I think it was the former because the individual asking the question had a thick accent that sounded to be either Indian or Pakistani, perhaps suggesting to McCain a recent immigrant grappling with America's image abroad.
"I'll admit to you that it's tough, it's tough in some respects," McCain said, seeming to lend credence to Michelle Obama's observation.
McCain said America needed to be "more humble, more inclusive."
He observed that one of the ways to be proud of the country was to look at our history — and the sacrifices U.S. troops have made abroad.
McCain let his questioner follow up and the individual repeated, but didn't clarify, his line.
In closing, McCain said he was proud of America in part "because of you and what you've been able to achieve and accomplish."

sweet Jebus...if we lose to this man in the fall, I am moving to Canada.
Wow! This guy never ceases to amaze me. Seems like every time he opens his mouth, he steps on his d*#k. I'll bet his handlers are p***ed.
So he didn't give a snide or politicized answer, and we're badmouthing him for being "confused"? Seems petty.
For the senile shell-of-a-man, McGrampa, it's tough, it's tough in some respects to just remember his own name.
The only way Obama can possibly lose to McCain is a successful swiftboating campaign. They are focusing on the fact that the Obama's are actually somewhat engaged in the black American experience, instead of rejecting it outright like a Clarence Thomas or Colin Powell. McCain could piss his pants on stage and it won't matter if they can raise enough anxiety about Obama's scary blackness.
METHINKS this is a bit of a reach! Although one has to continue to question a candidate who is so CLUELESS about much of what is out there on all levels...and, yet, our MSM continues to push the idea of the race being "tight"...now I thought two BUSH administrations answered this question for me ...BUT, are "Merkins" really that STUPID!!!??????
it amazes me that this is the best the right can put forth. Seems every day he has some sort of flub. And like post number 1, if McCain does win, Canada is looking pretty sweet. Maybe we can get a package deal on travel.
Wow. Proud cuz when it comes to killing, second to none. Yup. That'll make ya wave the flag. McCain=retarded.
Will bil o'reilly be threatening to get up a lynching party?
These days it is downright impossible.
Grandpa McCain of 2008 is a duplicate of another Grandpa B.Dole of 1996.
That's the best what Republicans are able to offer, and between them is GWB.
You're welcome to come to Canada, but will you be able to get your brains around public healthcare??
Even when they stock the room with ringers and lob Gannon style softballs at him he still gets confused. Why didn't his handlers just script an answer for him?
Assassin @ 3:
I would agree...if this were the only case where this idiot didn't know what was going on or who was involved in what...This guy doesn't just mix up the non-crucial things like he said in the above post, but he also gets Sunni and Shia mixed up, he don't know who Iran might be training and he doesn't know the difference between our occupation of Iraq and the Marshal Plan that kept us in Germany and Japan for so many years. This guy doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. And he military service record doesn't make up for the fact that he doesn't know his facts.
Hussein Bookworm @ 12:
P...ub...lic...heath...care? I'm not familiar with that term...you mean the government want to ensure that the citizens of their country are healthy and have access to a doctor when they need it? Sounds like a communist plot to me! If you don't have to pay thousands of dollars a year and then wait hours to see a doctor, is it really medicine?
Assassin @ 3:
The man wants to be leader of the mightiest military on the globe. Do you really want a confused, unstable, obviously unintellectual as Prez again?
Assassin @ 3:
Agreed. McCain gave what I think is an honest answer while at the same time giving the left the gift a defense for Mrs. Obama. What's to be indignant about?
ConcernedCanuck @ 16:
There are very good reasons not to elect McCain. Your examples above are a lot of them and then there are his policy stances.
But his answer to this question wasn't a reason not to elect him. It's not even something to hold against him. He said it's hard sometimes to be proud of America.
I'm not proud of America at the moment (but more so than I've been since Bush got elected). I want to be proud of America which is one very good reason to elect a leader we are proud of. McCain is just too weak to be president. He won't stand by any of his convictions - even the ones I don't agree with. He caved to Bush in 2000 and then sucked up to him after that.
Anybody with even an ounce of self-respect would behave very differently toward Bush than McCain has. If he doesn't respect himself do you think he respects us?
So him saying it's tough to be proud of America sometimes is dead on.
He doesn't attack MO and they scream..if he had they would scream. It's not about right or wrong, it's not about facts vs fiction with these Obamatons. It's defend the Messiah no matter what, even if he's not being attacked. I can't wait to see what they do when he is indicted and arrested for being a criminal.
Those you see following the Obamessiah are not Democrats, though the species may try to look similar. They are in fact nothing but JACKASSES!

McDole is headed for the trash heap of history.
I've always had this sneaky suspicion that Mac is doing his thing in revenge for 2000 and getting back at Bushco and Rove.
Hussein Bookworm @ 12:
Yes, indeed. It's one of the main reasons for coming!
on the other hand, it could just be a senior moment and McCain's amateur campaign team.

Its very complicated, taxes pay for the health service, administration and hospitals, meds, operations, etc,
and its free at point of sale, everybody is covered.
And guess which advanced industrial nation is the only one without a NHS system ?
hint begins with an A.
CafeenMan @ 17:
Exactly. McCain had to sell himself to the neocons and religious right and corporate interests-- and every once in a while he actually shows up.
Next story.
Dahgrostab'ph-r-i @ 15:
Medicine and hospitals for the wealthy, folk remedies and aspirin and other pretend OTC meds for the poor.
Wow...some actual "straight talk" from McCain. BTW, I think that the reason some are looking at Obama "like the messiah" is that they have suffered through BushII, Slick Willie, Bush I, Ronnie "trickle down" Reagan, the hapless Carter, Ford, Nixon the Nazi....I suggest that they are not jackasses, but hungry for a real leader.
POdVet @ 19:
The sad truth is that many voters, likely most voters, care more about whether or not the guy they'll vote for is "more like me" as opposed to the voters' concern about the candidates's stance on the issues. The large number of voters identifying with John McCain is really a frightening thought. He is obviously dumber than dirt.

Huh ! When you really look at history, there isn't much to be proud. And, as a matter of facts, it's the same for every country in the world.
History, anyway, rightly or wrongly, is mainly made of individuals having done something "historic". And, objectively, being proud of your country just because you happen to have the same citizenship of some, or a bunch, of historic people doesn't seem particularly clever, nor more clever than being proud of your country because, well, it is your country. After all, what it is, if not being proud of the accomplishments of others, and taking some of their glory to glorify oneself ?
People will uderstand that I don't see why Michelle Obama should be proud of the US because she has been to Princeton and makes 300,000 a year. She has all the reasons to be proud of herself : it's a personal success (she can be thankful to the US to have allowed it). Now, being "really proud" of her country now, because her husband has come where he is, is perfectly justifiable, since it wouldn't have happened some years ago, and he came where he is now with the help of millions of people.

Anybody who hasnt been there or really looked hard at what is offered, go check out Wallyworlds (and other pharmacies) area for symptom covering meds.
Its radical the difference between say the UKs average pharmacy and what is sold in the US to sick customers,
here in the US people are suffering (from lack of real health care) and buying half assed pretend painkillers and other balms to avoid treatment or because they are not covered by their insurance.
Its a lucrative market for the OTC (over the counter) 'med' suppliers.
This is such an incredibly ignorant argument to begin with. I liken it to family members, whether they be children, parents, spouse, etc. Most of the time you're proud of them, but sometimes they do things you're not so proud of. And even when they do things you're not proud of, you still love them. It's the same with my country, I'm generally proud of America because we have done a lot of great things. We were founded on great principles. Lately, however, I haven't been so proud, and even before that we've done some things that were less than decent. The last 7+ years have been a disaster. I'm particularly embarrassed by the Shrub. After all, name one thing he hasn't made worse or screwed up from the get go.
POdVet @ 19:
I think you've missed the point of this post.
There are many on the right who would like to attack Michelle Obama because of her "finally proud of america" bit. But now McCain is helping her out by what he's saying. So, for the those on the right, it's like "Damn! Can't he even stay on message? We're trying to help!" So that makes it kinda funny for those of us watching, because he's shooting their efforts in the foot. Hardly a matter of defense.
Spicegal @ 33:
Oil corporation profits? Munitions corporate profits?
It is tough being proud of a country that has become modern day vikings. Hopefully the attacks on Michelle Obama will now stop.
He can get by with this statement because he's a conservative white male, she can't because black Democrat.
He can get by with this statement because he’s a conservative white male, she can’t because she's a black Democrat.

Leopards cant change their spots, nor can Republicans change their white supremacist bigoted ways.
And it doesnt help when black actors sell out (for money) for the racists in Hollywood,
that latest Eddie Murphy / Cedric film looks like just another rolling eyes (going by the trailer), black people are funny film.
Ok maybe 95% of the movie might be serious acting, but if 5% panders to the old hollywood notion of the scared black with big white rolling eyes then its not good.
Ruthless People @ 38:
...we'll never hear about this. Mainstream Traditional Corporate Media double standard.
Spicegal, #33: agreed. There's also something Orwellian about the right shrieking "unpatriotic!" every time someone is caught not wearing a flag pin or expresses something less than absolute adulation for our country and it's policies.
Now that this Bush clone has said it, let's hear the ring wing get up in arms against such a comment. But they won't... they're too busy being outraged over scarves in commercials & other idiotic things.
Del Capslock @ 41:
Its out and out fascist conformity, their blind worshiping of uniforms and flags, and the way they shriek and call every 'war is bad' dissenter out as a traitor.
It just proves they are a herd mentality type people, safe and cosy in their stupidity and willing to be led like lambs to the slaughter.
of course the manipulators and the org crime families tend to always have good reasons why them and their children dont,
have to go off and actually fight and die for their money grubbing cause, they send other peoples children off to die, generally poor peoples children.
Obama will be in good shape this fall with all of McDole's senior moments he can't help but provide for Democrats.
Dancer @ 6:
The Republicans are counting on it.
it proves it. Mccain is a traitorous terrorist working for the Vietnamese to undermine Truth, Justice and the American Way.
Ralph Kramden @ 46:
Bush43 twice is a good example, even if the elections were stolen, he got close to 50% of the stupid vote.
or to rephrase it properly, close to 50% of the vote was stupid.
Turkeys voting for Xmas, and in 2008 chickens coming home to roost etc.
Just add 'I've been proud of my country for the first time this century' and it'll be a correct statement.
But let's get him into the whitehouse first. And then let's see the promised change.
AND THEN, I'll be proud.
Until then, America can go blow itself.
McCain remains the best choice for America and Americans.

I noticed Johnny McManchurian was not wearing a flag pin, nor was the questioner. Nether was quite sure what country they were talking about without the visual cue.
McCranky does seem to shoot himself in the foot again and again with incessant flip-flopping, but the only ones who seem to be calling him on it are at MSNBC. As long as he continues the mental flatulence, it should make the job easier to reveal his ignorance. Military families are certainly being turned off more and more.
My favorite part, though, is that the questioner was being too cute in trying to inject his smear of Michelle Obama, and so his dim-witted candidate missed the point and fell into the hole that the questioner *thought* he was digging for Michelle.
I'd love to hear the post-session thoughts of the questioner on what he'd just done to John McCain's campaign.
Someone needs to counter the Republican spin that Democrats are attacking McCain on his age ("confusion") by pointing out that McCain's confusion is not age-related. He's been conflicted with special interests for years, and his flip-flopping is not a new, age-related condition.
John McCain: Consistently conflicted, consistently confused.
If the dried-up, empty husk that is John McCain gets elected it'll be IMPOSSIBLE to be proud of this country.
mccains going to be shoved under the bus at the repig national convention , and its a waste of effort bashing him, do you really think the repgs wont dump mccsnane and put in a ringer ? the one they wanted all along, stand by for a ram!

John McCain: The Gift That Keeps On Giving
Well i am ashamed of what we have let our government become.
We have been disadvantaged in the process by the hugh sums of money a few have poured into the rigging of the system.
That is what I am ashamed of about America!
John McCaint said.
“I’ll admit to you that it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects,” McCain said, seeming to lend credence to Michelle Obama’s observation.
I say,
I will agree w/ that statement 100% (we are talking about being proud of the elected/appointed government part of America right?...)
McCain also said "America needed to be “more humble, more inclusive."
I say,
Absolutely not! Americans need to un-humble ourselves and stand up for our constitution and country! ...and we need to exclude You, and other politicians like you from ever holding elected or appointed positions in American govt!
McCaint also observed that, "that one of the ways to be proud of the country was to look at our history — and the sacrifices U.S. troops have made abroad."
I say, all the troops that fought and died while protecting American freedoms over the years ...all rolled over in their graves the day that you signed the Patriot Act you sumbitch!
CafeenMan @ 17:
I'm with you guys. C&L seems to be the one a little confused here.

Apparently McCain is not the only right-winger with no appreciation of irony.
milquetoast @ 66:
on the other hand ...let me anwer to that a different way...
Yes McCaint, I agree 100%...America needs to be more humble and inclusive. ...I couldnt agree more! (we are talking about the elected/appointed part of America right?)
adam @ 67:
I think you're missing the point. C&L isn't indignant, only pointing out what a tool he is for not staying within the Repug talking points. They never, never can afford to be honest and even hint at being critical of the US and here he goes and blows it. He gets no credit for being honest this one time because he is so disingenuous the rest of the time. He just fucked up. You won't hear him repeat that it's tough to be proud. Oh no, you watch, he'll be doing a rapid 180 in the next 24 hours and then we'll know he's back on line.
Thank you McGrandpa, now, can I ask you a few questions?
I'm kind of lost here.
Did he actually said that in some areas it is difficult to be a proud American? Because then, I can nothing else but agree with this fucking asshole. I was at a fleamark this morning. I bought a Nokia belt leather case for 3 Euros, plus 1 Euro tip. The man who looked in pretty bad shape was so grateful. He couldn't stop thanking me. I asking where he come from. He replied...Iraq. Then he asked the same. My wife said I turned pale. I barely muttered the answer..."I'm American." He said: You are American? And I looked as his face with embarrassment and walked away as quick a possible. Never expected something like that would happened to me.
We have been butchering the world in the name of Democracy for a long time. It got worse in the last seven years. We have lost close to ten thousand Americans in Iraq. We account only for 4200. We have killed closed to 300.000 Iraqians. We don't even talk about it!
But...a famous TV journalist suddenly dies, and a brigade of sanctimonious dumms asses get offended because some of us didn't really like the guy. But, that's another story. What would happen if also Oreilly suddenly croaks? Probably the same shit.
Moving right along. We fucked up Iraq's infrastructure, so that some of corporations, friends of the Administration, profit on "rebuilding it." I'm still questioning $9.000.000 earmarked for a postal Zip Code planification for Iraq. Postal Zip Code planification for Iraq? WTF???
Finally, there is nothing that drives me crazy the most, than hearing these fucking politicians at the end every speech with the "God Bless America." In reality, they are talking about Halliburton, KBR, the defense industries, EXXON, Carlisle or whatever the name is. That's what they really mean!
The only thing I have to thank Bush is, that in 2000, I was able to see thru his smirk and lies, and I was able to guess where he was going to take America in the next 10 years. So, I advised my friends to invest in oil. Some of them thought I was full of it. Some followed suit. My son called it blood money. I have to agree with him. The thing is...Americans can't see further from their noses and their bibles. They don't even know what's coming next week!
The pride on America will be restored. But it's going to take a loong time, and a lot of work. I hope I'm right.

'Should have never been a damn issue in the first place, but I guess we'll take it. I'd like to see a media-time comparison of either this flap or the bitter comment, as compared to time spent on the FISA/Protect AT&T Act to be sneaked through the House next week.
Our whole system is a load of crap, but I'm proud of what we have potential to be.
garcia @ 73:
While you are over in Europe, why dont you drop by the place where they print Euros...ask em to print up an extra trillion or so we Americans can use some of that "good" money...I will pay the current exchange rate if you bring some back with you! ...I know, I'm not being very patriotic...

“How can I be proud of my country?” he asked.
Well, McCain...grappling with America’s image abroad.
“I’ll admit to you that it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects,” McCain said
The torture, the unprovoked unjustified war, the massive crony profits - We seem to support the very worst of client states...
He observed that one of the ways to be proud of the country was to look at our history — and the sacrifices U.S. troops have made abroad.
Overthrowing leaders in Iran, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti, the Bay of Pigs, the Contras, the death squads in El Salvador, nuclear proliferation to our clients, land mines, depleted uranium, Napalming villages of women and children, sanctions that kill hundreds of thousands of children...And lets not forget Granada.
We are a rogue nation, a pirate nation and it is a tough sell.
This smacks of the worst kind of BS 'gotcha' style where every word is potentially twisted and taken out of context.
This is the dem left imitating and adopting the very worst behavior of the rep right - All the while claiming some superiority...
Like our country torturing and disappearing 27,000 people and then claiming some exceptional moral high ground.
If you all on the dem left ACT like the assholes on the right - How will I be able to tell you apart?
Hello. Let me start by saying I am an Obama supporter, and will not be voting for McCain. That said:
BRAVO to John McCain for answering this question from the heart, and avoiding the slick priapism of false patriots like George W. Bush. That was a REAL answer, not a political one, from a man who has suffered on his country's behalf, for a questionable empty cause and losing war. He knows it CAN be tough.
Shame on those of you in the comments who are seeking to make political hay from it. You are the mirror image of the Limbaugh listeners who attack Michelle Obama for her comment.

Now that you bring that up!
This dollar devaluation was planned. "Some" people in the Government is totally convinced that the whole world will pour over America, a tourist influx, and that American goods will flood the world with American goods since they are so "cheap" manufactured. But, guess what! They forgot that the Homeland Security has the whole world scared shitless, long time ago. Exports? We produce nothing. Everything is manufactured in China. Right?
And I thought that Buchanan was crazy when in the Mclauhling Group he predicted, in May 2002 that the dollar, in the
seven years will go "Peso wide." I couldn't stop laughing!
Fuck! He was right! I woudn't be suprised if the Mexican peso is worth more than the dollar by 2010!
Turism? In 2004 I was in Dallas. My wife came to visit me. The plane came on time. But what about my wife? I got really uptight. She was supposed to be in that plane. And nothing. Suddenly my handy rang; I answered and this guy identified himself a security man. He asked me if I knew so and so...my wife's name. Yeah, she is my wife. What is she doing here in the States. I said she came to visit, blah, blah, blah. That went on for eight minutes.
Finally she came out crying. If I see crying. Then I cry too. I'm a pussy. Right there, I realized, it was time for me to move out. And, so, I did.
Back? I doubt it. I'll vote from here. I love my country, but...
The Dems are laughing (or maybe cringing) at the irony and the Repubs are the confused ones who don't get it.
no imagination! i weep for this country,
It is really amazing that there has been so much resistance regarding government sponsored health care. As far as other real Democracies, (unlike ours) they have single payer health care. It works very well and everyone is covered. FreeSpeech TV has a show called GritTV with Laura Flanders and she has addressed this issue. It has been revealed that 59% of doctors would support a single payer heath system but the status quo does not. Doctores are tired of all the red tape and the paper work that is required when you have to seek approval from insurance companies before treatment is rendered. Insurance companies would not be controlling the strings and we would all get quality treatment based on need rather than the ability to pay which is shameful in this country.

That, then, is our job to keep this quote alive. Don't let them get away with the obfuscations.

1) denies he meant what he said
2) states how easy it is to be proud of this great land of ours
Mark my words sheep.
Please, please, tell me there's video...
If McCain wins this fall there can be only one thing to conclude. Either the elections are fixed or Americans are more stupid than I believe most of them to be. After all, Bush got into the White House TWICE SOMEHOW. And to be honest I'm not sure which explanation I would fear most.
POdVet @ 19:
I have seen this guy's PUMA signature at some die-hard, bring down the party, to hell with America, Hillary cult sites. Some people are really part of Operation Chaos. Some are right wing "concern" trolls. I hope this time the American voters have learned from personal experience.....not to be distracted by name calling and divisive tactics. But, just in case they haven't, I have decided that my family will save two dollars for every dollar we spend. We just might have to ride out a long depression if certain people have their way.
Beam me up Scotty , please , I can't take anymore of this insanity , it's overloading my circuits !
I wish someone somewhere would finally get Michelle's quote correct. She made two important qualifications. First, she said it was the first time "in her adult life." Second, she did NOT say it was the first time she was proud. She said it was the first time she was "really proud." So, even without considering the context in which she said it, her quote was much milder than what has been constantly (mis)attributed to her (including by Nicole here). It boils down to this: before her husband's candidacy, Michelle has not been "really proud" of America in her adult life. Before it she was. Now she is. Presumably, througout her adult life she has been fairly proud of America. And, of course, she (like McCain) can be less than fully proud of America and still love it and be loyal to it and its people and ideals. It simply means she hasn't always seen a lot to be "really proud" of in the past quarter century or so. In a remotely sane and rational public sphere, Michelle would not need such a gift from McCain (or Laura Bush) for her character to remain intact.
As a Native American............enough said.
Indeed. With anyone even considering John "Insane" McCain for the presidency, it is very, very tough to be proud of America.
If anyone honestly thinks that Michelle Obama's comment was not in the least bit blowhard-y and pompous, I think I'll need to move to Canada. Dear God, when did politics become like college rivalries? I think less people should go to college, or at least ones that have sports programs. They seem to carry certain mentalities over into voting. McCain's a jackass, Obama's a jackass. Defending either one like a savior of American politics is ludicrous. Politicians are liars, especially the higher up ones. It doesn't matter which party they represent nor what color they are.
