The Debate To Nowhere.

VP Debate: Clueless Shmoe Cites Shoeless Joe, but Lou Grant Has the Ultimate Verdict!

The Debate To Nowhere.

Yup!

That book is a joke, right?

I mean... you gotta be kidding me.

The book should be titled, "Daddy's Log Cabin Republican Roommate".

Hell Palin gets more media attention then McCain and Obama combined these days.

[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daddy%27s_Roommate]It's not a joke.[url]

And Palin tried to ban it.

I thought palin was laughable, biden was on the mark
On another note is anyone watching Leno? Dennis Miller is on, I can't believe what an as***le this man is

the debate needed follow-up format. this format was
soft. Palin was very scripted. Palin avoided the questions.
Palin wasn't compelling.

Can't Republicans run somebody that doesn't have ticks, grimaces, winces, and smirks?

I'm buying a dozen copies of American Pimp and giving them to my local elementary schools for their libraries.

he was scripted before, now he's doing his own stuff. he hasn't been funny since the 80's.

I tried to watch it but couldn't. Even though the format was for 90 second responses, I can't stand more than 30 seconds of Palin's voice. I occaisionally bliped back when Joe was speaking... he seemed tired and was clearly pulling his punches. Shame, really. If Palin was a man, Biden would have evicerated him on stage but alas, no.

Too bad Hunter S. Thompson is dead, he could have written Fear and Loathing in Washington DC - and Palin could have banned that book.

I'd rather have him hold back than come out looking like a giant asshole. Look the fact is the only people who like Palin are the base because she shoots animals and hates abortion. Independents and Democrats are scared shitless of a female Dick Cheney. She does nothing to help McCain win.

I would have to go back and take another look at the debate, but I do believe that Palin made a reference to Main Street creating the problem on Wall Street.

I wonder how many Americans appreciate it, to be addressed by their VP like they are toddlers..

Hey.. middle-class Palin is a millionare!

And they had "an income last year of at least $230,000".. Damn.. Biden should've used this. He could've pointed out that even Palin would be getting a tax cut under Obama, and simutanously be able to underscore that maybe you're not quite 'Joe Sixpack' when you're making 4-5 times as much money as he is.

I'm still not quite fully in on how that maverick-team thing is supposed to work.. a 'maverick' executive branch?

I mean.. if you're the President, doesn't that make you a fairly solid member of the establishment? Who's the president supposed to rebel against?

Palin was reciting McCain almost word for word on the subject of direct talks with "evil" rulers who hate our freedoms, blah blah blah. I thought that argument was completely shot down in the first Pres. debate - guess the McCain campaign wasn't paying attention, or figured we weren't. And because she repeated McCain's talking points from the first debate, we're supposed to believe she understands what she's talking about? She even had the nerve to bring up her meeting with Henry Kissinger. Please.

I guess McCain could punch himself out if elected.

So I'm watching MSNBC. And they're coming back from commercial, into the segment with Eugene Robinson and Pat Buchanan on "Hardball". There's a crowd cheering and holding up signs. Chris Matthews starts introducing the segment, and I swear to god, two of the signs over his left shoulder say

"SHAWSHANK

and

I don't understand what those signs are doing there, but if they are meant as ironic commentaries on protest, then I cannot help but tip my hat to them. WTF!

Yes. Palin went surprisingly far in that she put the blame squarely on the loan-sharks. (as opposed to what we've been hearing from some conservative quarters) And in particular, it sounded very much as if she was casting herself as a major champion of regulation.

That can't have sat well in some Republican quarters.

My low-information friend just left. We had MSNBC on after the debate. She looked at Chris Matthews and said, "Who is that and why is he shouting?"

I said, "That's Tweety."

Her reply... "OMG, he looks just like him!"

And by the way, what happened to Troopergate?

Huh, that's in the past. Like Palin said - don't look back, now's not the time to blame, blah, blah, blah.

She lost the debate. Look at the polls. True, she was not carted of in a straight jacket, but she impressed no one.

Why is it that the right believes in the "survival of the fittest" (free markets) in the financial world, but denies it in the natural world?

Flubs:

Palin, in criticizing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's Iraq policy, said that President Bush's Iraq troop "surge" plan had worked and that U.S. troop levels in Iraq are now back at pre-surge levels. In fact, there are 152,000 troops in Iraq. There were 137,000 troops there before the surge.

Palin also said that Obama has refused to acknowledge that the surge worked, but in a Fox News interview last month, he said, "The surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated ... I've always said it's succeeded beyond our wildest dream."

Palin said, "we're getting closer and closer to victory," and "victory is within sight" because of the surge. That's far more optimistic than U.S. military commanders and analysts are. While the level of violence in Iraq is much improved, military commanders — and a report this week from the Pentagon — caution that the gains are fragile and threatened by a number of worrisome developments. Most analysts also say that, while adding the extra troops in Iraq last year helped, other changes may have had more impact. These included the decision by radical Shiite leader Muqtada al Sadr to agree to a cease-fire and a U.S. program that paid Sunni tribesman to fight Islamic extremists in their midst.

Palin incorrectly called the U.S. commanding general in Afghanistan "McClellan." The top military commander in Afghanistan is Army Gen. David McKiernan.

Palin attacked Obama, accusing him of voting 94 times to either raise or fight against tax cuts. FactCheck.org, a non-partisan watchdog Web site, called the claim "misleading." According to FactCheck, Obama voted against proposed tax cuts 23 times. He also voted 11 times for increasing taxes on families earning more than $1 million a year to help pay for Head Start school nutrition programs. Moreover, 53 of his votes were on non-binding resolutions on allowing scheduled tax cuts to expire.

Palin repeated a McCain campaign claim that Obama voted to raise taxes on Americans making as little as $42,000 a year, but that claim, too, is considered misleading. Obama voted for a non-binding resolution on budget guidelines assuming that the Bush tax cuts would expire on schedule in 2011. The resolution was not a vote to raise taxes.

Palin overstated Alaska's contribution to America's oil and natural gas needs. She said her state has "billions of barrels of oil and hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas." Natural gas is cleaner than oil or coal, but it still emits hydrocarbons when it's burned. Alaska produces 3.5 percent of all U.S. energy, 13.7 percent of U.S. oil and 2.3 percent of U.S. natural gas, according to the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration.

Palin added that Alaska is building a "nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline which is North America's largest and most expensive infrastructure project ever to flow those sources of energy into hungry markets." In fact, no building has begun, no federal pipeline approval has been issued and actual construction is years away — if it ever happens. This summer the Alaska Legislature, at Palin's request, passed a law under which the state will issue a "license" to a Canadian energy company, TransCanada Corp., and pay it up to $500 million as an incentive to attempt this enormous project, which Alaska politicians have long sought with little success. The license is not a construction contract.

Palin also put the price tag for the project at nearly $40 billion, an exaggeration. This is roughly $10 billion more than most cost estimates industry players and consultants have made to date.

Palin misspoke when she said that when she and others in the state legislature found out that Alaska had some millions of dollars investment in Sudan, they called for divestment "to make sure we weren't doing anything that would be seen as condoning the activities there in Darfur." There's no evidence, however, that Palin had any part in the divestiture legislation, and one legislator who was involved said there's been no sign of her.

Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, misspoke when he said "we kicked — along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon." Hezbollah, a radical Shiite Muslim group, is very much alive in Lebanon, part of the government there, and in fact more powerful than it's ever been. Biden may have meant to say Syria, which under intense international pressure withdrew its forces from Lebanon in 2005 after a two-decade-long presence.

it helps when the state pays all of your expenses too

well no mike...she charged the state for those too...and for her family's

It seems to me a no-brainer that the violence went down. The insurgents couldn't keep up that level of violence forever. Eventually, they had to pull back and regroup. Military campaigns work that way. You have an offensive then you regroup and resupply. The violence level could go up again at anytime. I think it is a bit premature to declare victory in Iraq; this reminds me of the aircraft carrier job well done speech.

You have a blog. You know how demanding it is.

So far, my need to be a smart-ass rabble-rouser has kept me at it (Jesuit education); and I hope I've changed at least one or two minds (my own family is proving a tough nut to crack). Frankly, I enjoy blogging, but I have a great, new respect for folks who must meet deadlines. For example, most editorial cartoonists amaze me. They must be smart, on point, AND supply artwork?!?!? On a deadline?!?!?! I work 5 days a week in ophthalmology, it's more than enough. And, boy howdy, there is a health care blog in me that I'm still working on. The stakes are so high, though, that I can't quit now. Too much is at stake. It's like prayer, it ain't much, but it's all I got.

Healthy and unhealthy cereal brands.

GNA!

The perfectly timed distractions are sheer, utterly, "perfection". Like assinations, multiple airplane hijackings, and defeating Norad so easily. Sheer brilliant magic! Watch the right hand, while the left one is doing the so-called "magic". F*** the debates. It was a joke.

Time is running out. NO BAILOUTS!
What a perfect STING.

USA Outraged? 700 Billion?

Voters are rightly furious at the proposal to spend $700,000,000,000 that the government doesn't have to bail out Wall Street bankers who created the current economic crisis in the first place.
But why then aren't we concerned about the trillions of dollars the Federal Reserve is pumping into the system? Or the trillions missing from the Pentagon? Or the quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble.

This, " Palin overstated Alaska’s contribution to America’s oil and natural gas needs. She said her state has “billions of barrels of oil and hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas.” Natural gas is cleaner than oil or coal, but it still emits hydrocarbons when it’s burned. Alaska produces 3.5 percent of all U.S. energy, 13.7 percent of U.S. oil and 2.3 percent of U.S. natural gas, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration."

Palin acts as if Alsaka's energy (oil & natural gas), only happened when she became Governor.
(she doesn't talk of the tax on the oil pumped that goes to paying every Alaskan resident a gov't check each year and how the higher oil prices cost the lower 48 states more at the pump. that increased the Alaska Gov't resident givaway).

Sort of Like when McCain talks like the Iraq War began with the Surge and nothing prior.

I noticed this as well. Biden was quite civil -- just as Obama was in the first Presedential debate. Biden's responses were measured and thoughtful, and he had the hard numbers and facts to back up most of his arguments.

Meanwhile, Palin spewed forth a verbal diarrhea of platitudes and talking points with all the smugness of a halfwit prom queen. I wish I were saying that for the sake of being snide, but her demeanor smacked of someone attempting to compensate for marked incompetence by adopting a condescending tone and a mantle of self-assurance. That, and repeating the same sentence fragment three times whether it was relevant or not. At least there wasn't a "I'll have my staff look into it, and I'll get back to ya!" moment in there.

Was Dan Quayle even this bad?

i was surprised that s palin did as well as she did.
i was very disappointed that she chose NOT TO ANSWER
more than 50% of her questions and just went off
on a rant of gop talking points.

i was very proud of joe biden. he answered all
the questions and maintained a very civil posture

No. But he didn't look this good either. She may be an air-head, but she's a damn nice lookin' air-head.
