topic.

I just happened to see this from today's Washington Post. It seems we have quite a few "lawmakers" invested in the very healthcare insurance corporations we are asking them to deep six.

Ain't gonna happen:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/...

You'd think there'd be a law against these "lawmakers" having ANY investments while they're serving in Congress??!

Question:

"why would someone think another world war is a good idea?"

Answer:

The insane profits that can be made from mass destruction.

Go read the book 'Merchants of Death' (1934) for some very insightful history of the latter 19thC and early 20thC war machine and its methods.

btw the books also covers in some detail the rise of the third reich and connections to western arms companies who armed and supported Hitler.

Theres a lot of forgotten history in this book, key players from the scandals of the early depression and the disarmament and rearmament of the 20s/30s.

Some of the facts of poison gas warfare are very interesting, details that have been twisted and reinvented by WW2 onwards 'historians' , the ratio of poison gas production is very telling. 8 to 1 on one sides favour.

read this book and understand where the 30s pacifists came from, it wasn't just ivory tower rose coloured glassed ideology, but cold calculated facts.

The human race collectively has learned nothing from WW1 or WW2 or any of the big wars.

The book's final words

"Meanwhile those interested in creating a war-less world need not be idle and await the dawn of a new day. They can support every move made for the peaceful settlement of international disputes ; they can help to reduce the exorbitant budgets of war and navy departments ; they can work for regional limitation of armaments and back all treaties which tend to avoid competition in arms ; they can oppose nationalism and chauvinism wherever they show themselves, in the press, in the schools, on the lecture platform ; they can strive to bring order into the chaotic, economic and political conditions of the world.

The skies are again overcast with lowering war clouds and the Four Horsemen are again getting ready to ride, leaving destruction, suffering and death in their path. Wars are man-made, and peace, when it comes, will also be man-made. Surely the challenge of war and of the armament maker is one that no intelligent or civilised being can evade."

PS; gotta go, Paris and Britney are on TV in a minute.

I know what you mean ferrofluid....

I've read so many books over the years, some with conflicting information. I've often wished I could just pick up a Cliff Notes version of history that is simply the truth....warts and all. But there is no such book so we just keep digging and cramming for knowledge.

Has everyone seen the book, "Addicted to War"?

And one last thing. Here are some recent links for anyone who would like to come up to speed on where the healthcare debate thang is:

Same old story, almost the same happened during WW1 according to that 'Merchants of Death' book.

It shows that political corruption for profit is the norm, we have no oversight or responsibility in Washington. Kleptomaniacs running amok.

What is most shocking is not the fraud itself, but that it was brazen and entirely without pretext. The final figures put Mousavi’s vote below thirty-five per cent, and not because of a split among reformists; they have Karroubi pulling less than one per cent of the vote. To announce a result this improbable, and to do it while locking down the Interior Ministry, sending squads of Revolutionary Guards into the streets, blacking out internet and cell phone communication and shuttering the headquarters of the rival candidates, sends a chilling message to the people of Iran—not only that the Islamic Republic does not care about their votes, but that it does not fear their wrath. Iranians, including many of the original founders and staunch supporters of the revolution, are angry, and they will demonstrate. But they will be met with organized and merciless violence.

Already, Youtube clips are streaming out of Iran, many of them showing riot police savagely beating protestors.

Mousavi and Karroubi have been placed under house arrest.

I'd like to donate something, but I'm waiting for a new debit card to replace the one that I left in one of the old-style ATMs (takes your card into the machine while performing the transaction, instead of working off the swipe) I walked away from the machine and the card became property of Brinks. (They own the ATMs, not the bank). But a big thanks to Wells Forgo Bank for keeping this fine technology installed at your Garbage Grove (CA) branch; next time I'll use one of the newer ones at Stop and Rob down the street...

Just the quickie back info, I posted in last night's open thread and the CA bailout thread about how I feel we shouldn't allow Arnold to get his filthy mits on funds and services for the poorer classes in the state. I also shared that today I got two conflicting letters from Social Security, one saying that my state benefits had been cut yet again, and another saying I would no longer be recieving benefits period. I also mentioned that it was possible I would actually be recieving more benefits from another Social Security program and that may have been why I got my current benefits terminated, but that they hadn't bothered to tell me, so I was very upset.

Well...to fill in some more information I was too upset to mention, is that my mother/caregiver and I were likely to be reciving some back funds because 10 years ago I was terminated earlier than I should have from recieving benefits from Dad's Social Security that'd been getting after he passed away.

It appears the best case scenario has happened. We checked our bank account balance this evening and we got the shock of our life because the U.S. Treasury left us a big surprise. So I believe that the money we were owed after SSA's mistake has kicked in.

Anyway, to make a long, happy story short, I still believe that we cannot leave the poor out to dry. Our politicians need to be taught the lesson, not the people who can least afford it.

with Social Security. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but basically, SS claimed that they had overpaid her for several years following my dad's death and she owed them quite a few thousand dollars. She tried to appeal, but to no avail. This is why I suggested putting the funds (I assume they did an electronic deposit to your account) into another account. With one hand they may give, with the other, take away.

If they think you owe them money they'll just reduce the amount of future checks until it's paid back. THEY can make mistakes over and over, but you will be the one who pays. Make sure you keep a record of any meetings and record the name of the person you are dealing with. If you think you are being robbed, asked to speak to their supervision and make sure you write down that name as well...make sure they see you writing it down.

"Jose quickly got the tape to defense attorney Rochelle Berliner, a former narcotics prosecutor. She couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"'I almost threw up," she said. "Because I must've prosecuted 1,500, 2,000 drug cases ... and all felonies. And I think back, Oh my God, I believed everything everyone told me. Maybe a handful of times did something not sound right to me. I don't mean to sound overly dramatic but I was like, sick.'"

-------

And all felonies? Maybe this prosecutor only handled felonies, I don't know, but, as I mentioned earlier in another thread, perhaps the time has come to reevaluate the automatic classification of any amount of some drugs as felonies. Currently, a baggie with a few granules of cocaine or speed, or one valium without a prescription, or one ecstacy tablet, or a few hits of acid will result in felony charges in (almost) all cases. Given all the other issues facing this country (why is KKKarl Rove still a free man, for example), do these types of cases really warrant the costs (of law enforcement and prosecution by DAs) to pursue? Maybe reduction to misdemeanor charges in many cases would help?

One good thing that will come out of the impending financial collapse, is that a large section of the parasites that prey on the public, will find themselves unemployed. The keenness to continue the GWO(Everything) will wane when theres no paycheck for doing it.

I suspect the various local uniformed crime gangs will go freelance, thus formalizing their current semi hidden activities.

That 'crime family' in that Texas town, raked in $3 million over two years from highway robbery from out of state minorities.

And the possibilities for arresting and imprisoning non locals into a jail/prison labor force, makes for a very lucrative profit opportunity too. Its a return to a feudal system.

fastfeat's picture

it's the general public (sheeple), used to living with a police state telling them of what they need to be vigilant, that need to be "sold" the idea. I think that Joe Q. Public could more easily digest a reduction to misdemeanor of some felonies (sold to Joe Q. as "They're still criminals. They'll still have records," than the legalization ("God forbid, those drug users are criminals. I'm not like them.") of even marijuana. I'm not saying you're not correct on principles, but as we've seen with the 'Murkin public time and time again, most think 'principles' exist for disciplining their spoiled, bratty kids smart off to their teachers or get caught smoking in the bathroom...

have proof of voter fraud? Honestly, real proof? Anyone? Besides what is written by some reporter?

But Mehran Kamrava, director of the centre for international and regional studies at Georgetown University's campus in Qatar, cautioned that the displays of support for Mousavi were not necessarily an indication of fraud.

"The Western media has been talking to people in north Tehran, who tend to vote overwhelmingly against Ahmadinejad," he told Al Jazeera.

"But let's not forget that many of the urban Iranians have priorities and proclivities that are not necessarily reflected in other areas of the main cities, and those people could easily have voted for Ahmadinejad.

"Iranian politics have proved themselves to be notoriously unpredictable and this could be one of those instances of unpredictability."

I feel sorry for the good people of Iran who may not have had their votes counted (or ignored), if that is what really occurred. Doubtful that the truth will ever be known. Welcome to the nightmare that was the past eight years here; hope you survive it.

The US hasn't had anyone in Iran in 30 years or more that would have any clue what Iranians think or feel. According to MidEastern media, he is widely popular in Iran, and only a minority opposes him at all. Compare that with US media reports. Someone is right, someone is wrong I guess.
