Rest in peace, Senator Ted.

When I was seventeen, I was a volunteer for Kennedy '80 in Erie, Pennsylvania, and I know I'm not the only blogger who cut her political teeth on that campaign. May all of us remember the good times and continue to fight the good fight.

A reminder from Senator Kennedy's US Senate website, that those wishing to leave condolences for Senator Kennedy's family can do so at TedKennedy.org.

Unlimited Corporate money in elections?!?!

Could be…

Once upon a time, corporate titans bankrolled our elections with no limits. There were no social safety nets, no real labor laws, and no voting rights for most Americans. There were the haves and have nots.

This fall, a century of modest limits on corporate influence in politics could be completely rolled back, crushing progress on health care, the environment, energy, economic recovery … on everything!

The Supreme Court on September 9 hears a case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that reopens the question of unlimited corporate money in our elections. In a stunning move, the Court will reach back and reconsider two other pivotal campaign finance cases settled long ago. The potential result? A century-old pillar of campaign finance doctrine could be swept away.

Lobbyists and lobbying firms representing seven of the top 10 TARP recipients in the financial services industry as well as four of their major trade association allies scheduled at least 70 fundraisers for members of Congress and major party committees between Election Day 2008 and the end of June. Lobbyists and PACs of major TARP recipients and their allied trade associations made $6 million in federal campaign contributions in this time period, according to contribution data reported to the secretary of the Senate.

The many sides of Ted Kennedy

Dana Cook

………

John Kenneth Galbraith, economist and diplomat. "Effective liberal legislator"

Edward Kennedy's age and youthful inexperience were, at the beginning, sadly adverse circumstances. But not always. Arising early one morning in his first campaign to shake hands with the workers arriving at a Massachusetts factory, he was greeted by a man of mature years who came rolling down the line.

He said, "Teddy, m'boy, I hear you've never done a day's work in your life."

It was the candidate's most vulnerable point; he braced himself to make a reply, but the old man didn't wait for it: “Let me tell you somethin', lad. You haven't missed a thing.

J.F.K.'s decision on his successor was better than he could ever have imagined. Edward Kennedy was elected to the Senate in 1962 and went on to become the most diversely effective liberal legislator of his time.

Ted Kennedy versus Richard Nixon on health care 35 years ago here

The two video clips on YouTube here

Amazing, Kennedy's plan was single payer, the government would bypass private insurance entirely.

Nixon's plan sounds every bit like the Senate rumblings today. A unadulterated hand-over and hand-out to the profiteers.

That will be a thing of infamy, 35 years after Ted Kennedy battled Nixon, Kenndy dies and Nixon wins.

I was never courageous enough for subversion.
While on vacation with my parents in the summer of '82 I toured the White House with a small bag of weed in the front pocket of my Levi's. My 15 years of life experience informed my decision to give Nancy Reagan the middle finger over her ridiculous Just Say No campaign.

It was a silent protest until Mom discovered my little stash. She didn't see my point and was convinced the Secret Service would hunt us down at the Marriot.

I just learned of a great conference coming up here in St. Louis on September 25th and 26th at the Frontenac Hilton….that’s on Lindbergh, just south of 40, just north of Huntleigh where I think some of the Walker family still lives (as in G.W.)….maybe one of them will be there!

http://www.howtotakebackamerica.org/

Headlining, our bestest friend, Michelle Bachmann!

Let’s all go to learn how to fast and pray in order to defeat healthcare reform!

Looks like the Huckster is going to be there as well. Our buddy Steve King from Iowa is also rumored to be there. And, in a rare treat, Muslim killer General William Boykin also is rumored to be a guest. There will be many more. Of course, our own Phyllis Schlafly, who has helped organize this great event, will be there!

Check out the workshops…..lots of them.

Some of my favorites:

How to understand Islam

How to counter the homosexual movement

How to deal with the vote fraud, the census, and ACORN (I’m betting our pal Michelle is doing this one!)

How to recognize living under Nazis and Communists

How to activate your church

And many, many more!

Seminars only, without meals, are $99 in total, if you register by September 1….not much time!

Let’s all go for a rousing good time and learn how to take our America back!

And a fine quotation, too.

I think the positives, the good that the man did- or even attempted to do, but couldn't achieve- far outweigh the negatives in his life. If the Senate had a handful more Ted Kennedys we'd live in a much better place, imo.

Here's hoping Senator Kennedy's legacy of fighting for the rights and dignity of all Americans is realized this year in the establishment of good healthcare for all. And let us use this moment to redouble our commitment to the idea that government exists for the benefit of the governed, the state exists for the benefit of the citizens and the economy exists for the benefit of the consumers. Not only because it's right, but because history has shown that any other formulation leads to disaster. Thank you, Ted Kennedy.

"Gender Equality", "Child Soldiers" and "Humanitarian Law" are Axed from Canadian Foreign Policy Language

Neo-con PM Harper's hidden agenda rears its ugly head. This is basically a step away from the ICC, "Canadian" peace-keeping, and defending women and children rights during conflict. If this scum ever gets a majority parliament, Canada will not be recognizable.

Send that link to your friends CL. Then ask War Child Canada why they're not screaming to the heavens about it.

As a Canadian I found it intriguing. Unfortunately I was dismayed to find it was utter self-serving bullshit from the foreign affairs bureaucracy arguing that they should control foreign policy and that the government should merely be responsible for it. Many of these bureaucrats were appointees from the previous Liberal government. Why is this bad you may ask? Suppose it were Bush appointees sticking around and demanding to set government policy instead of the elected government. I think you get the picture. There is a reason we have elections.

We're now 28 in connection speed. Cheney has the gall to criticize Obama for politicizing investigations. Florida's gay couple adoption ban gets appealed. The National Organization for Marriage wants to make Iowa into the next Prop. 8 state. Most of Latin America is following Mexico in liberalizing drug laws. Yeah, Bush made us so "safe" after 9/11 that even Bernanke's personal info was used in an ID theft ring. A black female pastor gets murdered in McVeigh's old stomping ground. Oz's military court was declared unconstitutional. Courtesy of This Modern World, Limp Dick Bawl argues that naming the health care bill after Ted would exploit his death, since the GOP doesn't know anything about doing that, what with that Iraq war blamed on 9/11, and all...The CDC cites the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when it comes to swine flu. Why does Obama have a torture insider to reform interrogation methods? Cali is boiling, thanks to global warming. Mission accomplished: Iraq is a toxic waste dump. Even out of office, Bush continues his attempt to steal land for his library. Blinds are recalled for accidental deaths of children. For once, it's a Japanese car which gets recalled. Another anti-stimulus article cites about 4,000 checks going to prisoners who weren't bankers. Did Bill Richardson get a free pass in a corruption investigation? The FDIC is broke. The last time that happened was when Bush I was President.

The Progressives in Missouri need to take back the state. St.Louis and St.Louis County know the right path. There are other seats of sense, Columbia and St.Genevieve, but the rest of the state needs help! The DFA and PDA need to be reborn there. When the speakers of a conference include a woman who is (to quote a prior blogger) "one soul short of human", you know that the wingnuts have come. The clip of Ted kennedy singing with a smile on his face shows that he never gave up and thought that we could and should and must do better.

Ted Kennedy was a masterful politician and an effective, aggressive reformer--he was instrumental in shaping the policies, ideology, and face of modern America. More so, as Slate argues, than any other Kennedy. And though he may have more famous achievements (immigration reform, expanding health care, civil rights for the handicapped) he was also a champion of environmental causes.
Here, we pay tribute to the less celebrated--but no less important--legacy of green achievements he left behind.

But we should have every right to know when our elected representatives are getting bamboozled by a "spontaneous" campaign that was ordered up in a corporate boardroom and delivered by people who (if the Bonner example can be extrapolated) really don't care if the truth gets in the way of their messaging.

We don't inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children - Native American proverb
If being cold means there's no such thing as global warming, does being full mean there's no such thing as world hunger?

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/A...

WASHINGTON — Georgia's Republican senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, voted against the $787 billion economic stimulus package, blasting the bill as a bloated government giveaway.

But their disdain didn't stop them from later asking Defense Secretary Robert Gates to steer $50 million in stimulus money to a constituent's bio-energy project.

Gates didn't do it, but Chambliss, Isakson and other Republican opponents of the stimulus aren't going empty-handed.

Billions of dollars worth of Defense Department stimulus money is paying for repairs and construction at military installations in areas represented by lawmakers who said "no" to the legislation, according to an analysis by The Associated Press.

The request from Chambliss and Isakson isn't the only one Gates and other top defense officials received before and after President Barack Obama signed the stimulus law in February. Their pitch stands out, though, because of the GOP's staunch opposition.

As Congress considered the legislation earlier this year, Republicans called it a partisan bill bound to make the size of government grow, not the economy. Not a single House Republican voted in favor of the bill; only three Senate Republicans did so.

Trashing the stimulus and also welcoming the money is a sore point for Democrats who say the GOP can't have it both ways. But Republicans say there's no inconsistency in opposing wasteful spending while also backing worthwhile projects.

The Pentagon is staying out of the fight. Navy Cmdr. Darryn James, a Pentagon spokesman, said political considerations were not a factor as defense officials put together the department's stimulus spending plan. The two main criteria were that projects could be started quickly to boost the economy and would also improve the quality of life for military personnel.

In statements, Chambliss and Isakson said helping their constituents is an important part of their jobs. In this case, it was Bell BioEnergy of Tifton, Ga., which is developing a process to convert waste into fuel.

Overall, Georgia is getting just over $200 million in defense stimulus money for work at installations that include the Army's Fort Stewart and Fort Gordon, and Moody Air Force Base.

Just a few days after criticizing the "staggering" cost of the stimulus, Rep. Brett Guthrie, a Republican from Kentucky, urged Gates to consider using stimulus money to renovate a military hospital at Fort Knox, a sprawling Army base located in his congressional district.

The story goes on.

I had a neat dream last night; I dreamed I was dead.

It wasn't clear at first, it was me and some members of my family entering a dark mansion. As we were turning on the lights we were talking about what we'd hope we see. The furnishings were exactly what we wanted. It was a very clean 1920's style mansion furnishings. Someone said the only thing missing was a family portrait. And almost as soon as spoken and white enameled filigreed frame picture was found on the mantle piece, that wasn't there before with a picture of someone in the family.

Then we went to eat, and found a large number of people and food laden tables and it was buffet style. I think I heard someone say we were dead, so I thought, "Screw the doctor's orders," and bit into a large chocolate, chocolate chip muffin. Everything seemed so moist. There was some grilled looking meat, which I thought looked close to overdone, but I like well done. Another person disagreed and thought it was underdone. I thought it was roast beef, they thought pork, and I thought it could even be duck. It was delicious.

On another table there looked like there was only a dab of mashed potatoes, but it made a good size mound on my plate. Everything seemed heavy with butter, but then being dead, I didn't care about cholesterol levels anymore. The gravy was delicious.

I remember bugging people with odd questions like how many beings could literally occupy the same spot simultaneously as long as they weren't in the same plane of reality? It was my version of how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.

We then saw a movie in a den explaining the place. I remember leaving saying I'd be more impressed if it had production values after the 1950's to some people's annoyance.

It turned out it wasn't heaven or hell, but a haunted house, and the resident ghosts were lonely for company. More than likely whatever we saw or ate there is what we wanted to find, not necessarily what was there in actuality.

Funny thing, there was no drinking or sex that I remember.

Even with the knowledge of his terminal illness I was unprepared for the news of his death. I gasped out loud when I read the headline and shed a tear. Some part of me believed that his tremendous life force would win out. I believed the same thing about JFK Jr. and held out hope for days that he would survive.

The Kennedy family progressed America in a way that created new expectations and bold dreams. Teddy had a messy personal life but he never went around preaching morality either. For that matter neither did his mother Rose who was deeply religious but never wore it on her sleeve.

The bill forces them to have insurance, it just doesn't give them govt. subsidies to pay for it. Which sounds good to me, if your here illegally you shouldn't get any govt. help. Except maybe for the trip back to where you came from.

THE MINSTREL BOY BY Thomas Moore

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;

"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard,
(Should) "Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's steel
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;

And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

God bless and keep you, Teddy.
