The wagon wheels are coming off on the sovereign debt crisis and we’re in the early phases of it. Some may have noticed I do a fair amount of posts on precious metals (PM’s), the reason for this is because gold and silver are the front running enemy to a fiat currency system. If you watch PM’s you can gauge the sovereign debt crisis by how much PM’s continue to go up even though HSBC and JPMorgan have gotten caught manipulating prices with heavy shorts. Fiat currency is losing despite this fact, the economy is not improving. The stimulus, bailouts, and FED have only bought time and made things worse, what comes next will be far uglier than the 08 crash.

In August of 1971 Nixon detached us from the gold standard (40% exchange to be exact) because France was emptying our vaults under the Breton Woods agreement. They believed we couldn't pay off the Vietnam War, they we're right, we didn't and still haven't. So with the stroke of a pen without Congressional approval Nixon converted our entire money system into a fiat paper system. That was only 39 years ago, until then gold was officially money.

Central banks still consider gold money because every central bank lists it as a reserve asset. India, China, and Russia are all purchasing gold. It's important to note China has been selling our fiat dollar since January of 2008.

Instead of making blind assertions why not do some research and learn about the history of money and the role gold has held in our economic system. While you're at it learn about how many times fiat currency has succeeded in surviving in the world as a money. The short answer is zero, never.

Goodnight, Frau Blücher

Peter G's picture

than you can imagine. They're some of my best customers. Gold goes up because it is one of the many places to park your money in uncertain economic times. As the world economies improve it will go down. It has very few industrial applications and those require minute quantities. Other than that it has little intrinsic value. I'm also a metallurgist and materials engineer btw and I'm pretty sure I have a solid grasp of the metals markets. You'd be much better off investing in metals that will up as the economy improves and for which there are actual uses. If you'd invested in lithium futures or neodymium both of which would have given you much better returns. Gold is for suckers right now. It is near it's peak and if any major state decided to take advantage of it's current price to lock in returns it will fall rapidly.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

ron's picture

so bad that people would only deal in gold, how would they make change? I agree 100%, if you think investing in gold will save you in hard economic times, You are as nutty as a teabag full of pecans.

VegasRage's picture

it's going to haunt you. So you think China, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia are all nutty as a teabag full of pecans huh? What I state in my posts above is not pie in the sky speculation, it's history repeating itself again. This has all happened before, this scenario has played out literally thousands of times throughout history since around 400 BC when silver was first used in Athens and was later debased with copper. Some of the other most noteworthy failures in fiat currency would be Holland with tulip bulbs in the 1600's, again in France and John Law in the 1700's.

Here learn a little history and see just some of the countries that have experienced fiat currency hyperinflation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinflation#E...

Goodnight, Frau Blücher

VegasRage's picture

as I said (and JP Morgan for that matter) gold is money, so is silver. As late as 1970 there was still 40% silver in Kennedy half dollars. Why do you suppose that was? Why do you think they replaced them with cheaper metals? Do you understand what intrinsic value is? Do you understand the dollar today is literally a liability? Do you know what debasing currency is? As I've said a number of times this contest between gold and fiat money has played out thousands of times through out history and in every case gold wins. Even in our country fiat currency has already failed twice, the first was the Continental, the second was the US Greenback dollar. Fiat currency has failed 100% of the time, the probability of success is zero.

When fiat fails gold and silver reassert themselves as money, their purchasing power go up exponentially, and a new money system replaces the failed one, and gold and silver's value fall into line with the new system. What do you suppose countries like China, India, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Russia know that you don't? Why do you think legendary investors like Warren Buffet, Jim Rogers, Marc Faber, and many more who own a lot of gold know that you don't.

Goodnight, Frau Blücher

Like I said, the stimulus hasn't worked, it's only put off the inevitable and the inevitable is about to arrive only now they are deeper in debt.

Goodbye, stimulus. Hello, state budget cuts

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Think states have made deep spending cuts? You ain't seen nothing yet. States have been struggling with huge budget gaps since 2008, but this year could be worse as federal stimulus funds wind down.

Until now, stimulus money spared governors and state lawmakers from making some of the most brutal budget cuts. But with this lifeline running out, officials are looking at making significant cutbacks to public services, particularly schools and health programs.

"The stimulus funds have staved off what could have been even deeper cuts," said Todd Haggerty, policy associate at the National Conference of State Legislatures. "You're seeing states now are coming to that point where they will have to make additional cuts or find new sources of revenue for fiscal 2011 and that will continue in fiscal 2012."

The Original Anti-War Mother's Day

In 1870 - 140 years ago - the disastrous human consequences of the American Civil War were becoming increasingly apparent, especially to the mothers of sons and the wives of husbands who had watched as these men proudly and patriotically marched off to "glorious" war a decade earlier.

Some of these women had probably (and regretfully) participated in the pre-war flag-waving fervor that war planners and profiteers cunningly elicit from the poor and working classes who will be doing the dirty work.

Everything changed, however, when the killing and maiming started and the permanent war wounded struggled back home with desperate needs for medical and mental health care. ...

Excellent historical perspective on the Original Mother's Day.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

I loved the first paragraph of this article in today's NYT Business Section:

"SOMEONE ON WALL STREET JUST MADE A KILLING."

Then, on the front page was this paragraph dealing with the "harrowing plunge in the stock market":

"But, maddenenly, the cause or the causes of the market's wild swing remained elusive, leaving what amounts to a $1 TRILLION question mark hanging over the world's largest, and most celebrated stock market".

Call me crazy, but this looks like it might have been a VERY sophisticated "inside job" to me.

That's the closest to "under God" found in our Founding Documents.

And clearly "their Creator" could be the Tao, the Great Spirit, Mother Nature, DNA, .. whatever ..

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Karen's picture

The Declaration references "Natures God," the "Creator," and "Divine Providence."

Each of these metaphysical invocations has an interesting history. Only the last can be considered a Judeo-Christian concept. The other two are all wrapped up with the founders' understandings of Natural Rights, and are decidedly not Judeo-Christian.

In fact, if I'm remembering this correctly ('sbeen a while since I really studied it) "Divine Providence" was added in the amendment process. Jefferson had not written it. When other members of the Continental Congress were worried that their plans for revolution might be in trouble if they said nothing about "relying on providence" or something to that effect, Jefferson basically rolled his eyes, and acquiesced, thinking to himself, "how silly."

If anything, the Declaration is a tribute to the religious diversity among the founders. The Christians among them (and yes, some of them were) looked at "Creator" and "Nature's God," and knew full well that Jefferson was not referring to the god of the Bible. And they were unhappy about it. But they all ultimately signed the same document, which references natural rights, natural law, an ambiguous creator force and divine providence. It is the quintessential American document.

Now if only they had left the anti-slavery portions in. :)

The word "god" does not appear once in the U.S. Constitution.

You really have to struggle and strain to make the Constitution a religious document. The closest it comes is recognizing that Sunday does not count when counting the 10 days the president has to either sign or veto legislation, and that's a big stretch.

Otherwise, you have to contort yourself into a semantic animal balloon to interpret the Constitution as religious.

That or, you know, just lie.

BTW, here's a link about the Gulf spill where now it appears BP's next "big idea" is to try to shoot a bunch of old tires and golf balls into the gusher to stop it. I wish I was kidding:

have no clue I don't know what will. Let's see the upside, it stops the leak, the downside, if it fails it could cause the leak to spill 12 times faster. With 3.5 million gallons spilled so far just imagine if it was 42 million and growing.

I hope they can come up with a better idea.

So far, BP has been trying to save the well, not trying to save the Gulf. They have to stop the leak to do either, but that doesn't mean they've been trying to stop the flow of oil. That is, they've been trying to stop the leak while keeping the well open. Capping it is not the same thing as plugging it. This sounds like they may be willing to plug it now since capping it ain't working. YAY tires and golfballs!

MountainMan23's picture

That's part of the reason it hurts.

My mom was a titanic figure politically, sometimes extremely loving, but in the end quite abusive. Then she killed herself.

Today I cried for her. A lot.

But I also can't stand the sentimentality. Above I posted an article (The Original Anti-War Mother's Day) that describes the reason behind the original Mother's Day, which has instead become highly commercialized and just about as far from the original conception as possible.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Karen's picture

Thank you, MountainMan23. I did not know the history of Mother's Day. How interesting!

Aside from the commercial nature of all our holidays, it bothers me that our culture insists that we respect our mothers. You know how many mothers should not be mothers? Do people have any idea what the statistics are for emotional and physical abuse perpetrated by mothers on children? And so many of those children, especially the emotionally abuse, are not listened to when they complain. They're just in turn abused by the authority figure to whom they go for help (teachers, ministers, friends), who generally belittle the emotional abuse, and instill shame for not respecting their mothers more.

I'm so sorry to hear of your story, MountainMan23. That is tragic. My mother was seriously emotionally abusive, and I still suffer the effects of having grown up in her house.

I do not begrudge anyone who wants to celebrate their loving, wonderful mothers. In fact, those who do great jobs as mothers should be recognized for what it is they actually do, for being a mother is perhaps the most difficult job in the world. But we should not accord respect automatically. And no one should be stigmatized for saying, "I don't celebrate Mother's Day." Anyone who does say so probably has good reason.

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

cw's picture

but I miss her. Her death was hard and still lingers as if it was just yesterday. I've learned to live with it, even on holidays like mother's day (or xmas, which was her birthday).

The part that bothers me the most is no family, no friends asked me how I was doing today or anything like that. No calls from "best" friends, not even about *the* topic, but just to say "hey..." =/

This world is a cynical, cold place.

Well, surprise surprise-- it never showed up!! And not even a phone call to her or me, nor an email to me. I imagine it will show up sometime today, with a strongly-worded apology (and no refund, of course). Fuck 'em all!

My four sons ran me outta L.A. five years ago!!!

Not literally of course, but their behavior made me throw all my things in storage, give up the lease on my house, grab my cat and a suitcase and head for the east coast!!!

They were all "adults" who refused to "grow up".

Well, all those tough love classes finally sunk in.

When I flew outta L.A. and breathed a sigh of relief that I had escaped alive, they were forced to grow up without their "enabler" around to "take care of them".

I came back this past November and all is well in Mudville now.

I received the loving support and respite I desperately needed and they all figured out what it means to be real men.

As a result of my "tough love" we had a beautiful Mother's Day yesterday where I got to love all of them and them me. PLUS I have a new grand daughter to boot!!!

In my view THE problem with the American family is that we've destroyed the extended family and replaced it with the nuclear family.

I only wish MY mom had moved away from the mess she helped create and taken a deep breath like you did. More than anything else I would like to have known here later in life when I was an adult. I hope you don't think I was suggesting that all mothers were bad or that children can do no wrong.

I don't know about "all those" mothers who are abused by their kids. I only know that "Mother's Day" should not be an automatic celebration of every female whose managed to give birth, or even to those who minimally fulfilled the obligation of housing and feeding a child. I'll celebrate "Good Motherhood Day" if society gets around to recognizing what good motherhood is, but merely being a mother does not warrant its own holiday.

I also find it rather curious that you responded to my post that way. As though I was somehow insulting you personally. Very curious.
