Beck and Goldberg team up to claim that James von Brunn was a left-winger

Last night, Glenn Beck and Jonah Goldberg tried an exercise similar to Rush Limbaugh's, in which they tried to construct a plausible argument that James von Brunn, the Holocaust Museum shooter, was actually a "figure of the left."
They ran through the same list: He hated Bush, he hated "neocons," may have targeted the neocon Weekly Standard too, and most of all, he hated Jews.
Somehow omitted: He also hated black people, and he especially hated Obama because he believed he was controlled by Jews. (See the note he left behind.) He also hated the Federal Reserve, taxes, the United Nations, the federal government generically, admired Hitler, urged the reciminalization of miscegenation laws, and promoted The Protocols of the Seven Elders of Zion as fact. He worked at one time for Willis Carto's right-wing publishing house, Noontide Press, and used to sell copies of Carto's house organ The Spotlight.
As Mark Potok put it to Keith Olbermann:
You know, the idea, though, that somehow, you know, this shooting at the Holocaust Museum was in any remote way an artifact of the left or Obama's fault somehow, you know—I mean, it's vile beyond words and just has no basis at all in fact of any kind.
Yep. "Vile beyond words" just about covers it. Especially when it comes to Jonah Goldberg.

Is there anyone more congenitally dishonest than Jonah Goldberg working in the right-wing media? Deeply, appallingly dishonest?
I mean, I really think Glenn Beck believes the amazingly dumb stuff that comes pouring out of his mouth. Bill O'Reilly is no doubt deeply cynical, but I think his ego keeps him from admitting to himself that he is in fact a bullying and manipulative propagandist. The rest of them -- Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin -- at some level actually really believe the garbage they emit.
Goldberg, on the other hand, comes across as someone who at a basic level realizes he's just playing semantics games as a way to manipulate the debate. Deeply cynical, in other words. Because you can't help read his book, Liberal Fascism without recognizing the profound dishonesty of the entire enterprise -- which is, namely, to declare that "fascism is a phenomenon of the Left". It's not as morally appalling as Holocaust denial, but it's close.
Because anyone with any respect for history, and especially the importance of the its details, and who has studied in any serious sense the historical events surrounding the rise of fascism in the 1918-30 period knows just how profoundly wrong, how meaningfully false, Goldberg's claim is.

Looking at your statistics, my original comment (which I removed) was not far from the mark. Something is wrong when nearly half a country is so self-absorbed they just don't care what is being done in their names. (But, I won't repost it, lest I offend.)
How many were disenfranchised either by legal means via past convictions, disheartened to vote due to apathy from Faux style propaganda, voter ID too costly or refused at the polling station, or outright vote rigging by crooked officials.
The full truth of vote theft and election stealing would be sickening in the extreme if it was known by some omnipresent means.
Consider its not in the majority of American's interest to have conservation gov, Repugs only see the poor as fodder or a tax base, not people with rights and aspirations.

I was just reading "The Sociopath Next Door" by Martha Stout and that sounds about right. She also points out that Asian countries have a really low percentage of people with no conscience, because they basically look at their socities as "we" instead of "me".

When you classify someone's political ideology with either "left" or "right", you're leaving so much out that you might as well just not classify it at all.
Stalin was a Communist (with a big C). The original revolution was small c communism, to overthrow the Czarist regime and build an egalitarian society. But, as men go, the leaders wanted more power and money, so it morphed into big C Communism, which is totalitarian. Nothing to do with the revolution, but a police state. (That's what "Animal Farm" is all about.)

What Beck and Goldberg are doing is what a majority of the modern right does now - they take a preconceived conclusion (in this case, von Brunn was a leftist), and they find facts to support that evidence. They ignore anything that does not support this conclusion. It's dishonest, obviously, but it's the only way these right-wingers can debate as their intelligence prevents them from doing much else.
This also shows a major problem with the way we discuss politics in this country. People aren't 2 dimensional and politics is exclusive to people. We need to realize that a person's politics is 3 dimensional and stop this left/right diatribe. For example, I have a friend who falls into the category of a libertarian for most issues I would say, but one day, we had a conversation about health care. She told me that she believed it was a right and everyone should have it. I know - it becomes difficult to try to box her in, but have a conversation with most people and you'll find that they can't be narrowed down completely into being a left-leaning or right-leaning person.
The other problem with the right is that everything is black and white to them. Abortion is infanticide to them, but ask them about all the babies who die every year because they aren't getting proper medical care as their parents can't afford it and they don't see the gray there (aka as the link between the two). They simply ask, "who's going to pay for all of it?" In the case of Beck and Goldberg here, I would ask them if they believe in the right-wing, evangelical belief in the Rapture. They wouldn't realize the point, but the Rapture is, by definition, anti-semitic. The belief that when Jesus comes back in Israel, the Jews must either denounce their beliefs or be slaughtered isn't exactly pro-Jew. This point, of course, would fly right over their heads.
Von Brunn hates many things. He's not conservative and he sure as hell isn't liberal. Due to the fact that he loved his guns, hated the government, and seemed to have believed that marriage should've been left up to the states (based on his support for miscegenation laws), it would show this guy was a right-winger... but we'd be ignoring the facts that Beck and Goldberg are using to make him seem like a left-winger.
QUICK NOTE: the statement about marriage being left up to the states comes from the right's, and apparently our current President's, belief that the federal government should not be involved in marriage and it is a state's rights issue. The fact remains, however, that interracial marriage would not have been made possible had it not been for Loving v. Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_v._Virginia) in which the law of the state of Virginia banning it was overturned by the Federal US Supreme Court. Would that also be considered a time in which the court was "legislating from the bench"?
I want to be at a convention with all these people who listen (and believe) both these guys so I can write a book and win the Nobel Prize for literature. Sure it would be like a Dick and Jane book but a prize winner.

His most common violent behavior is to use kittens as baseballs, tossing them in the air and striking them with his bat. As for Michael Moore's statement about the stupidity of the American people -- he understated the truth. I finally got a copy of "Idiot America" from the library (it's never been read before, but it has been in "processing" for seven weeks), but I don't know if I'll be able read it -- it is really painful reading about saddles on dinosaurs. Much of the stupidity in this country is rooted in religion. That doesn't mean that every religious person is stupid (or necessarily ignorant), but belief, especially fundamentalist belief, in a supernatural being seems to predispose people a) to believe other non-factual stuff and b) to have an incredibly low standard of evidence for believing.
Guys like Beck and Goldberg are simply idiots (in the case of Beck he's a self-proclaimed self-educated moron), who make such a hash of history and facts that it is often impossible to figure out what they're trying to say.

This is yet another losing battle of the republican't war on reality, because reality has a well known liberal bias, where in response to reality biting them in the ass, they attempt to re-write history and common sense to subvert it to their political whims.
Thus liberalism is responsible for all the evils of the world; they are well known commies as well as fascists. Successful liberal ideas like the New Deal are really abysmal failures that caused all sorts of problems.....many decades latter..........under republican’t presidents.
They must constantly paint all bad things as liberal and keep reminding people of the inherent goodness that is conservatism. They must keep up ideas like the Democrats being against civil rights while suppressing the fact that the Democrats who were against civil rights, went on to become republican’ts under the Southern Strategy in the 70's.

Ever since Goldberg's book was released almost every conservative I have ever had a discussion with has resorted to re-defining words to fit their idealogy. It's an evolution of the conservative tactic to "muddy the water" and make any argument come out as a wash at worst. It gives them plausible deniability if they can just twist words enough to make their point even semi-plausible to their audience. Goldberg and other conservatives know who their audience is. They know that they will swallow this garbage whole because it reinforces their beliefs, it doesn't challenge them in anyway.
It's become mainstream amongst conservatives to equate Hitler, Nazism, and Fascism in general to Liberalism and they feel no need to explain it either. The basis for this argument is the word "socialism" in National Socialist Party. That is their whole argument. It's as if Golberg and others have made this a "fact" in their minds, not to be disputed. They don't want to discuss the facets or right wing vs left wing, the fact that socialist != liberal, or that all of Europe isn't committing genocide or taking over other countries despite the fact that they are socialist. Nazi = Socialist = Liberal is good enough for them.
As someone with a background in philosophy this trend is extremely disturbing. You cannot have a logical argument without first defining words and agreeing upon those definitions. Conservatives have found their best argument yet, they just don't agree with the definitions of words anymore. They don't even attempt to be logical anymore and these illogical arguments are used as a tool to radicalize the right and stifle open discussion. I don't think Goldberg realizes how dangerous his word-games have become. You can justify anything by redefining the terms in an argument.

Having just completed a run through three states I was amazed at the stupidity of the people watching the Faux Noise network. When I questioned them about the absurdities of the comments their answer was it made them feel good even though they new it was a LIE or incorrect. At one place I was told straight up front they were catering to the WHITE older crowd who WILL NOT accept the change, So go figure blatant lies twisted truth is acceptable because only white counts, talk about a sorry state of affairs.
I was one ot 10 honor students from a class of 81 forty years ago. My home town school graduated 41 honor students out of 62 this year -- and still flunked No Child Left Behind for the second year. From what I understand, Reagan took civics out of our schools but, apparently, public education is just a joke in the U.S. today where teachers and student go through the motions and everyone gets a prize. So, sure. We've never been at war with Oceania and Hitler and the Holocaust Museum shooter were leftists. Who's left to argue?

Even if Right Wing-Nuts scream to the walls, cry their eyes out or wet their panties, it doesn't change the absolute fact that the Holocaust shooter was a Terrorist and zealot from the Right Wing nutcase fringe.
Besides Goldberg along with his nutcase mother had their brains sucked out years ago.
Sounds consistent with goldbooger's Hitler was a lefty lie. Because, he'd argue, Nazi stands for National Socialist German Worker's Party.
So of course any modern decendent of the Nazis would be a lefty too.
And as for the Klan they originated in the Democratic South, but nevermind that they went national, and since the 1940's have been generally identified with an extreme form of conservatism.
'Socialist' is how the NAZIs described themselves.
I could call myself as a Nazi or a Thug, but since I don't do NAZI or Republic things, it would not be an accurate self-assessment.
Well it's like I always say, leave it to Republicans to conveniently overlook that the Chinese Communists call themselves the People's Republic of China, and the USSR stood for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
So using goldbooger's "logic," which my point was that he was being consistent with, we could argue that Communism=republicanism.
Recently, Rush Limbaugh attributed the rampage of James W. von Brunn at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to his alleged left-wing ideological impulses.
According to Rush:
"This guy is a leftist if anything" and
"This guy's beliefs, this guy's hate stems from influence that you find on the left, not on the right."

Sure. In fact, Von Brunn was so despondent about not being able to listen to Al Franken on Air America since he ran for the Senate and that all he could listen to were Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, he decided to take it out on a black guard at the Holocaust Museum.
