Glenn Beck and his fellow wingnuts proclaim Holocaust Museum shooter not a right-winger

Glenn Beck and his fellow wingnuts -- the ones who have been whipping up hysteria among their right-wing populist followers since Obama's election and before -- essentially announced they have no intention of reflecting on their roles in today's horrifying shooting at the Holocaust Museum in D.C.
They did this by doing what they always do whenever these situations arise: First call it all an "isolated incident" committed by a "lone nutcase" who just happens to be acting out beliefs emanating from their own quadrant. Then, when that fails, blame it on the Left.
Beck offered the following rationale on his Fox News show tonight:
Beck: What they're missing is: The pot in America is boiling. And this is just yet another warning to all Americans of things to come.
Actually, Beck has this exactly right. But frankly, it's boiling because of people like Glenn Beck, ranting hysterically every night about impending apocalypses of various forms -- looming "liberal fascism," the "economic meltdown," the "New World Order," violence spilling over the Mexican border, even FEMA concentration camps.
As I tried to explain in the case of the shooting of Dr. George Tiller, when you spread far-right conspiracy theories through mainstream channels the way Beck does with such abandon, it not only validates their beliefs, it rather hyper-validates them: It tells these people -- who see the Becks and O'Reillys as part of the "liberal media" -- that things are even worse than they thought, and it often spurs them into action.
But Beck, naturally, has no intention of observing this reality. He's running as hard in the other direction as he possibly can:
Beck: This guy is a lone gunman nutjob. ... You're going to see a lot of nutjobs coming out of the woodwork now. There are two very important things that are happening here. First one: It's what I talked about two years ago, um, when I talked about the "Perfect Storm" -- I said that there is a storm formulating. And it is the economy, it is political correctness, it's corruption in Washington, it's militant Islam. It's all of these things.
I said when it comes onshore, there's going to be a "go go go" mentality. And that's what this is. There is a mentality in our enemies. Our country is now vulnerable. Those people who would like to destroy us -- our enemies like, uh, Al Qaeda. There are also enemies like white supremacists or 9/11 Truthers who would also like to destroy the country. They'll work with anybody they can.
... We are under attack in almost every shape and form in America. We need to look out for enemies foreign and domestic.
Second: There is gonna be a witchhunt, I believe, in this country, and quite possibly all around the world. For two groups. First group: Jews. It happens every time.
Second group: I think, Conservatives.
... Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security reports about right-wing extremists. You remember that came out a few weeks ago? Left-wing bloggers and some in the media have blamed conservative hosts like me or Bill O'Reilly for just stirring the pot! I'm not stirring the pot. I'm pointing out the pot is boiling and there is trouble in America. Since when -- have you ever heard of 'don't blame the messenger'?
Only when the messenger isn't also one of the people causing the phenomenon they're describing. Then it becomes celebration. And it's obvious that Beck has positively relished seeing the "boiling point" go higher and higher. Indeed, he's been doing his best to apply a white-hot flame to the pot.
Beck: This is not the work of right-wing conservatives. This is the work of someone today who is racist, crazy, or most likely, both. Common sense tells you that there are very hateful people on the Right and the Left.
Yes, but it seems that only one the Right do they do things like shoot up police officers who come to arrest them, or walk into Jewish centers of various kinds and start shooting (remember Buford Furrow?).
And there is little doubt that James W. Von Brunn was a right-winger -- a far right-winger:
Von Brunn has a long history of associations with prominent neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers. In the 1980s or early 1990s, von Brunn was employed by Noontide Press, a part of the Holocaust denying Institute of Historical Review, which was then run by Willis Carto, one of America’s most prominent anti-Semites.
Von Brunn is the author of the 1999 book, “Kill the Best Gentiles,” a racist and anti-Semitic tome that argues that whites are seeing “today on the world stage a tragedy of enormous proportions: the calculated destruction of the White Race and the incomparable culture it represents. Europe, former fortress of the West, is now over-run by hordes of non-Whites and mongrels.” A raging anti-Semite, von Brunn blames “The Jews” for the destruction of the West. The book is dedicated to prominent neo-Nazis and racists including Revilo Oliver and Wilmot Robertson.
In 2003, AP reported that von Brunn had painted a portrait of Rear Adm. John Crommelin, a raging anti-Semite who was a close associate of neo-Nazi William Pierce, whose book The Turner Diaries inspired Timothy McVeigh’s bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.
He's also a "birther." But the truly telltale aspect of his record: In 1981, he was arrested for attempting a "citizen's arrest" of Alan Greenspan at the Federal Reserve Building in D.C. and was sentenced to a prison term for it. Von Brunn claimed "sovereign citizenship" at the time, which almost certainly means he was an adherent of the white-supremacist/far-right movement called Posse Comitatus, and was acting on those beliefs.
More to the point, this is precisely the same belief system that today fuels the cottage industry in conspiracy theories -- promulgated by the likes of Ron Paul and Alex Jones -- that the Fed is part of a massive conspiracy of "international [read: Jewish] bankers" to enslave Americans and destroy the country. It's been around quite awhile, but lately it's been gaining the patina of being regurgitated for mainstream consumption on right-wing media. And in particular, on Glenn Beck's programs.
Here, for example, is the time Beck devoted an entire segment to promoting this conspiratorial view of the Fed.
And then there was the more recent hour-long segment (promoted by Neil Cavuto on Fox as well) devoted to the latest permutation in these Patriot-movement conspiracy theories -- the "Civilest War" hour promoting "state sovereignty":

Now, it's one thing to point out the radical origins of these "constitutional theories." But it's also important to understand where they want to take us -- to a radically decentralized form of government that was first suggested in the 1970s by the far-right Posse Comitatus movement.
They essentially argue for a constitutional originalism that would not only end the federal income tax, destroy all civil-rights laws, and demolish the Fed, but would also re-legalize slavery, strip women of the right to vote, and remove the principle of equal protection under the law.
Beck's not alone in trying to recast Von Brunn as just a "lone nutcase" inspired more by the left than the right. So is Michelle Malkin, who tries out the right's usual plaintive line, well-rehearsed for these situations: "[S]hooter wasn't 'left' or 'right,' just plain loony."
Um, no, actually, when you look at his record, he was indeed "Right." With a capital "R."
Malkin's main evidence that he has "left wing" associations? The fact that he's also a Troofer.
This is, of course, rich. Now, it should be noted first that there are certain zones of extremist wingnuttery that attract True Believers from both the Left and the Right. All of them are fundamentally conspiracist in their worldview. So you'll find anti-Semitic crap floating around hippie barter fairs of a nature similar to what you might find at a militia gun show. Conspiracy theorists like the Troofers attract people from both the Left and the Right.
The wingnuts have been trying frantically to make the public forget about the lethal existence of right-wing extremists ever since that Homeland Security bulletin came out -- largely because they want to cover up the fact that the distance between themselves and the real nutcases has become so short indeed.
But the violent extremists never let us forget. Sooner or later, they act on their beliefs. And that's when we start to see just how short that distance has become -- regardless of their attempts to claim the opposite.

I wish I shared your optimism. What we have now is the perfect storm of corporate owned, extreme right wing media who spew propaganda pretty much 24/7 along with a desperate, angry working and middle class.
While it's true that many of us are becoming more progressive the more we learn about the depth of corporate ownership of government, the frightening fact is that millions more--needing an outlet for their anger and something/someone to blame--easily lap up the bile spewed by the MSM.
The propagandists know this is a critical time and are pulling out all the stops to (mis)direct all that populist anger against, not just the left, but anything that is not extreme right wing.
The question is, can we somehow redirect this anger toward the true culprits--the military, industrial, media complex?

What else would you say has caused this sudden rash of killing....kill the doctor in church, shoot and kill the young military service recruiter on his job, go ape shit and shoot up the Holocaust Museum and kill people there. Spread the guns around to all the loonies, take 'em to church (in case you want to shoot the preacher), take 'em to school (in case you want to shoot the teacher), and otherwise threaten to shoot and kill anyone who stands in the way of your extreme right wing fanaticism and your impending insanity. If it weren't for Rupert Murdoch providing these instigators with so public a platform, they'd be far less influential.
The right wing in Texas passed a law to allow students to take guns to school. Right wingers believe if all students were packing weapons it would make it safer. Of course, they are idiots. I would be terrified being a teacher and looking out over my class knowing any of them could just pull their guns and start blasting away. I would be terrified to give a right wing student a low grade because he could just shoot me.
Right wingers don't read or try to understand anything. They react in knee-jerk fashions and even condemn studies and intellectuals. Study after study has shown that if a person opened fire in a classroom and other students took the law into their hands they would shoot the innocent students and never hit the assailant. They have a greater chance of even shooting themselves rather than an attacker. Even police officers who are trained and retrained would freeze or shoot the wrong person if they haven't had a refresher course within the previous 2 months.
But facts, truth and studies mean nothing to the irrational right. They mindlessly adhere to a mutant belief that if every student had guns it would make things safer. President Obama was right when he said those people 'cling to their guns & religion'.
What's next? Will right wingers push to have toddlers in day care centers carrying guns? The right wing is made up of the most ignorant, illiterate, gullible and profoundly stupid people in the world.
Maybe for a different reason, but Alan Greenspan should be arrested for what he did to our nation.

I don't say this to create any form of sympathy for the killer. I say this because the only way we will begin to heal as a nation is if we stop looking at others as against us and start trying to build bridges. We may disagree with Beck on 90% of what he says, but when he talks about Fascism coming to America, it's for many of the same reasons Naomi Klein talks about. His sole blame of Obama is misguided, but the reality is not. There is still a corporate heist going on in this country.
The racism, the bigotry and all that we must stand up against. But, we need to refrain from falling to their level of fear, contempt and anger. One side needs to work at building bridges and you know it won't be their side. So it's up to the left to stay above the fray and remind the right, "We're all in this together."

And it's not so much clamping down on speech.
ALL THE FCC HAS TO DO IS THIS:
1) Hold the commercial networks to STANDARDS, standards that were in place for years, of using OUR AIRWAVES in the public interest.
2) Break up the conglomerates. They have too much money and power. Fox is one of a handful of MONOPOLIES.
3) Same point, but create more competition. There is no LOCAL competition. Journalism has been decimated by consolidation. More competition = more real journalism.
4) Take a couple hundred million--A DROP IN THE BUCKET--and feed it to PUBLIC media. WE NEED A BALANCE OF COMMERCiAL AND PUBLIC, like most SANE nations.
All of this is within their capabilities. And nobody would squawk, except Rupert and Glenn with two Ns.
Well put, Sir! The breakup of Media (and other) Monopolies, along with Publicly Financed Elections (Oh, if ONLY it had been put in the original Constitution or Bill of Rights) would go a long long way towards returning sanity and democracy to our country.
Things will never be perfect, there will always be evil, bigotry, greed and hate, but they should NOT be the principles guiding our Government and major institutions.
The people we're talking about here aren't on broadcast stations, they're on cable stations. They're not using "our airwaves," as such. They may be bundled in to your cable package, but they're not free, you're paying for them to be beamed into your home.
A 'protecting the children' mentality takes us back to the era of the 'safe' 50s, nothing nasty can be said or seen on TV, no protest no dissent, just lots and lots of sugary TV and bland.
The polite social mores of the fifties kept segregation and other social/medical ills alive and kicking, the practitioners of evil rely on people keeping quiet for fear of retaliation.
Go back 80 odd years and you will find that in a certain European country, they also used something akin to 'protective' hate speech laws to oppress minorities both religious and political, and to close down annoying dissenting news outlets like 'the Poison Kitchen' aka the Munich Post.
Authoritarian types that tend to gravitate to and infest gov, will use scares and fear to crack down on dissent of all types.
The best and safest way to combat the evil of the 'Becks' of this world is ridicule, expose their credibility and moron stupidity to the sunlight, it will wither.
I know what kind of people watch his shows. My sister and brother are both right wingers who don't read, do research or try to look at all sides of an issue. They mindlessly lap up every drop of verbal puss dripping from Beck's mouth like thirsty, cur dogs.
My older brother and sister are both right wing fanatics. They are both racists. They are both bigots. And they both profess to be Christians. But when our family members got sick or needed help they were never around. I lost my little brother to cancer and they never once helped him during the 2 years he was sick. I took him into my home and gave him everything I could. I drove him to the hospital over a hundred times, often in the middle of the night. They did nothing.
My own family was planning on moving to Hawaii. My wife and son went ahead of me to get a house and get established. We sent all of our brand new furniture there. We spent $15,000 to move. But as soon as we found out my brother was sick my wife and son moved back immediately. We lost all of our furniture, the job my wife had and a huge amount of money.
My older sister and brother did nothing. My wife and I would make the same decision all over again because it was the right thing to do. We gave up our dream to help my little brother. But instead of getting any positive reaction from my older brother and sister, I got hatred and anger. My older brother never once even called to see if he could help my little brother. Neither did my sister. But here they were, going to their right wing church and putting on aires. My brother was making over $150,000 a year, but he didn't give a dime to help our family or to help our sick brother. Neither did my sister.
From what I have seen, they are typical of right wing 'christian' republicans. They are completely selfish. They are greedy. And they are the most profoundly hypocritical people in the world.
I also helped my dad and mom when they became sick. I gave them love, encouragement and all the physical and emotional support I could give them, but my older brother and sister did nothing. They are both considered 'successful' by their fellow right wingers. But right wingers only consider 'success' as having money. They think people like myself who sacrifice greatly for others are losers. They attack anyone who cares for others as touchy-feely. They condemn people and organizations which help other people.
My older brother is Ross and my older sister is Sandra. They are void of any empathy or concern for any other human being on earth. But they are good right wing republicans.
Because of helping my brother my family lost almost everything. We sacrificed for him and we would do it again. I am proud of what my wife, son and I did to help Jody in his final two years. My older brother and sister still go to church and profess to be 'christians' but they are just like most right wingers. They are hypocrites. They are greedy. They are selfish.
Oh yeah, and both these right wingers were 100 percent FOR going to war in Iraq. They both mindlessly supported Bush, Cheney and their gang. They always support right wingers regardless of what they do. They also both loved the Vietnam War and loved Nixon. They have lived a lifetime of absolute greed and selfishness. They are abusers and have violated other people often. My older brother is a sex abuser. Both of them routinely abuse anyone they perceive as vulnerable. But they are 'good' 'christian' right wingers...

Becks tries to distance himself from the conservative terrorists he enables and then tries to deflect attention to Al-Queda even though the terrorist attacks on America since 911 have been almost exclusively from conservative terrorists. Beck then "excuses" their actions because, you know, they have reason to be angry and kill Americans because Obama is in the White House. Beck attempts to enable the killers and distance himself at the same time from their actions. What a clever slight of hand.

Civil action to me seems to be the way to go. Basically, the idea is that of course they have every right to say what they want (or almost, but let's face it, you have to get pretty extreme in speech to get to a prosecutable crime), but they can also be held responsible to the victims of their speech.
In a way, it could be an advantage that the family closed Dr. Tiller's clinic. It actually adds to the amount of damages that could be named in a civil suit, if one is filed. (And could it possibly add to the number of people that could be named as plaintiffs in the suit? Could the people thrown out of work as a result of the closure sue for their lost income? Hmmm....)
