Foxheads wonder why 'liberal media' laugh when right-wingers claim blizzards disprove global warming
Yesterday on Fox News' News Watch program, they teased the above segment by asking the audience: "Why are the liberal media so dismissive to global warming skeptics?"
During the segment itself, host Jon Scott replayed "liberals" like Chris Matthews poking fun at various conservatives who, during the week, attempted to claim that this week's East Coast blizzards were proof that global warming is a hoax. Of course, as it so happens, that was one of the chief talking points all week long for Fox anchors.
Then Scott posed the question to Kirsten Powers:
Scott: Why is it, Kirsten, that you can't be a skeptic about global warming and do it publicly?
Powers responded with some blather about how journalists weren't skeptical enough themselves, and James "Willie Horton's Daddy" Pinkerton predictably chimed in with right-wing talking points about how global warming theory is like a religion. It took Ellis Henican to bring some sanity to the conversation, pointing out that one week of weather does not affect the science of climate, which by definition is something that occurs over many years.
We could answer Scott even more succinctly: No serious skeptic of global warming would try to argue that these storms disprove global-warming theories (as a matter of fact, they tend to confirm the existing models, as we noted previously).
The only people who would try to claim that are clowns -- partisan hacks looking to score cheap political points by promoting and playing a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of climate change.
We had some precipitation with lower than freezing temps. What a combination!
As a MD resident we've had below zero temps in the past. This year? Not even close.
Still, its hilarious to see Fox and their buddies try to wrap themselves around an idea that the planet might possibly be slightly larger than their hometown, or even our country. And then, to see that observed temps have risen sharply, faster than has happened in our known history.
Fact is, they need to be laughed at when trying their "look out the window" science to denounce honest to goodness science.
Really it hasn't anything to do with science. Their 'looking out the window' bullshit gives them weather... not climate. People too stupid enough to know the difference should all move to Alaska because they have 'nice weather' during the two days of summer they get a year.

Nothing about Vancouver having to truck in snow for the winter Olympics (or having its warmest winter yet). Nothing about parts of usually snowy Michigan not having any snow. I tried to explain why we have winter to two guys at my job. They didn't even grasp the concept of the earth tilting on it's axis as it orbits the sun. When you're that bereft of knowledge, what can you build on?

I thin k that the talking heads who were rightfully laughing at Fox News were laughing at the reason that the Fox News idiots were claiming that global warming is a hoax. Because it snowed on the east coast during February it proved that global warming was nonsense. Because these idiots claimed it was a hoax and using this as evidence they showed themselves to be clowns and who doesn't like to laugh at clowns?
We laugh because when California and several other states caught on fire for a week or more, you weren't saying "oh crap, maybe Al Gore was right!" We laugh because on the other side of the planet right now, further to our south, there's no snow and some places have droughts due to excessive heat and lack of rain. Why? Because it's summer, but you've ignored that. We laugh because we wonder, do you believe the sun is actually being switched off at night by God when it goes all dark outside?

The annual average snowfall for Baltimore is 21", and that could mean 42" in one year, and ZERO the next. It all averages out. We will probably go for the next five years with only a dusting.

The green house effect is scientific proof. We can't keep pumping tons of Co2 into the atmosphere while simultaneously deforesting the earth. It doesn't take a doctorate to figure that out. Anyone who is a daylight's drive from the Canadian border should realize that it very much can get "too cold to snow". If it's below zero, the odds of significant snow are slim. The fewer days below zero in winter, the more snow. It's a pretty simple observation. But most of America doesn't live within a comfortable drive of Canada so I'm sure FOX realizes it's good and actionable propaganda.

I will say however that I refuse to watch Fox News of my own accord, but at least last night Geraldo Rivera had the physicist Michio Kaku on his show to explain climate change to Geraldo's audience. How much good that actually did, I don't know. Most Fox News viewers are pretty dense.

Global warming is not about hot and cold. It's a term that refers to ONE of several results from carbon emissions and chemicals being pumped in the atmosphere from industry and business.
The correct term is climate change. The more this term is pushed, the more people will start seeing it for what it really is and not get side-tracked with silly arguments about "a snowball fight" when it's "suppose to" be warm.

It's a more accurate term, and helps with people who are apparently too willfully ignorant to grasp how an average increase in temperature can lead to substantially larger swings in both directions, and generally more extreme weather in all sorts of ways. Some of the professors I had in college almost 15 years ago were using this term, and I understand how its the same overall effect that causes hotter and hotter summers every year where I live (it's barely recognizable compared to when I was a kid) and more and more fierce winter storms.
Somebody should start saying to them "So, you have a job, therefore the US economy is doing fine." Or better yet, specific to the news shows, "If Obama's stimulus isn't working, then how come you have a job that pays seven figures and just got a raise?" It'd be funny to watch and see if they walk into it by saying "Well, I'm only one person, but on average across the country things are getting worse." Then you get to just nod and smile.
But you can. Please; by all means. We beg you. Display your active ignorance for all to see. With any luck, someone unsure of the facts will see how ridiculous you are and come to the light.

That one from Ian Harris, climate model programmer at CRU. There are many others like this. Do your own research. Scientists are as prone to ethical lapses as the rest of us.

Don't be so naive. There doesn't need to be a big conspiracy. People can get caught up in groupthink, and climate scientists DO have much to gain when the "fact" of global warming becomes a worldwide condition of public policy. Also, you are buying into the media perception, trumpeted by Gore and others, that every scientist agrees. This is certainly not the case. Why WAS it set only weeks before the first winter snows were due to hit in the Northern Hemisphere? Would it have ANYTHING to do with it being easier to convince the public of the Northern Hemisphere about warming if the cold of last winter was only a distant memory? In effect utilizing the warmer seasons themselves as a way to prove global warming theories to the general public.
How could the climatologists predict that the winter snows would come early this year? How could the climatologists predict that it would be a cold year this year.
Isn't it interesting that every year it was the "Warmest on record"... until the last few years, but for Copenhagen the goalposts were moved because it WASN'T the warmest on record by a measurable degree.. so it became the "Warmest Decade on Record" utilizing the unusually higher temperatures in 2000-2003 to drag the decades average up.

What do you base the claim that "this has been the coldest winter for many decades in USA" upon? I can assure you that here in the Northwest -- where we just had the warmest January on record, and they're flying in snow for the Olympics -- it has been the warmest winter for many decades. In fact, since they began recording temperatures here.
Actually, 2009 was no hotter than 2008, which was colder than 2007 which was colder than 2006 which was colder than 2005...

It's quite clear that whatever data you're presented with, you'll dismiss as part of this massive conspiracy. And it would have to be massive indeed to be as consistent across the board as we're seeing. Indeed, it seems that any kind of supporting data is just more proof of the existence of the conspiracy.

And over the last ten years Torturecorp Inc's stock has been steadily up and up and up.
If they have one day where the stock drops 10 points you're not going to sell it in a panic because the 10 point drop doesn't reverse the ten year trend of constant growth.
Anyone who has even a rudimentary understanding of statistics know that the more samples you gather the more anomalies will be uncovered. But two blizzards do not reverse the overall trend that very clearly shows global temperatures increasing. If you look at the temps, individual years may go down a little bit but the overall trend is up, up up.
Global warming is occurring whether Fox and Morons, or the oil companies washing them with money wish to admit it or not. The climate is changing around us, and even if they wish to believe that 'humans cannot possibly be the cause'* our behavior of dumping gigantic amounts of Co2 and other pollutants into the air isn't helping matters. It's making things worse.
Do volcanoes produce Co2? Absolutely. Do we produce Co2 every time we breath? Sure. But we can't control volcanoes and we can't stop breathing. We can, however, with existing technologies reduce the amount of co2 we're putting into the air via transportation, and mining and agriculture. The only reason we're not is because the monied interests that own both parties (though the Republicans are more vocal) refuse to let them. Fact is, global climate change is here and they would still make money off greener technologies but it is more profitable to them to have the cost of oil go up and up and up as a result of war and so forth. So they pull the strings of their mouthpieces and nothing ever changes.
But what these idiots fail to realize is that they need to live here too.
* And if they believe this they should be sent to observe mountaintop removal and clean supersites where bacteria has evolved to live in the toxic soup.
