Fox News wants to proclaim blizzards proof that climate change is a hoax -- nevermind those pesky scientists
We know that folks on the East Coast -- especially in New York and D.C. -- tend to think the world revolves around them, but this is ridiculous.
The Fox News anchors were having a field day yesterday, promoting their coverage of the East Coast snowstorms, mostly as a way of springboarding into their claim that the storms somehow prove that global warming is not happening -- a fixture in the Fox narrative.
Because, of course, the only part of the world that actually counts is the East Coast. Nevermind that for the planet as a whole, temperatures in 2009 were the second-warmest on record, nor that scientists are anticipating more records in the immediate years ahead.
The theme on Fox: Because it's colder in New York and D.C., it must be colder all around the rest of the world!
Eric Bolling taunted Al Gore, as did Glenn Beck, who then went on to laugh at the reports noting that in fact this is evidence of global-warming theory, claiming that we were now using an upside-down thermometer, then darkly proclaimed that this was all about the "progressive agenda", which has no use for "the truth." And on Hannity's show, he trotted out the "blizzards debunk global warming" line, and Greg Gutfeld proclaimed that this meant the demise of the "global warming industry."
Of course, we could just as easily proclaim that the record warm temperatures we're getting in Seattle are proof that global warming is real.
But here in Seattle, we understand that what happens to us locally doesn't mean the same thing is happening globally. We're not only more honest about it, we're more reality-based.
And the reality, as the New York Times explained this morning, is that the heavy snowstorms on the East Coast in fact perfectly fit into the model of climate change being predicated by scientists:
Jeff Masters, a meteorologist who writes on the Weather Underground blog, said that the recent snows do not, by themselves, demonstrate anything about the long-term trajectory of the planet. Climate is, by definition, a measure of decades and centuries, not months or years.
But Dr. Masters also said that government and academic studies had consistently predicted an increasing frequency of just these kinds of record-setting storms, because warmer air carries more moisture.
“Of course,” he wrote on his blog Wednesday as new snows produced white-out conditions in much of the Eastern half of the country, “both climate-change contrarians and climate-change scientists agree that no single weather event can be blamed on climate change.
“However,” he continued, “one can ‘load the dice’ in favor of events that used to be rare — or unheard of — if the climate is changing to a new state.”
A federal government report issued last year, intended to be the authoritative statement of known climate trends in the United States, pointed to the likelihood of more frequent snowstorms in the Northeast and less frequent snow in the South and Southeast as a result of long-term temperature and precipitation patterns. The Climate Impacts report, from the multiagency United States Global Change Research Program, also projected more intense drought in the Southwest and more powerful Gulf Coast hurricanes because of warming.
In other words, if the government scientists are correct, look for more snow.
Fox's Jane Skinner featured a report this morning discussing this Brenda Ekwurzel of the Union of Concerned Scientists, who laid out in more detail how the heavier snows are likely a product of the heavier amounts of moisture in the atmosphere from global warming.
Want to bet that this bit of reportage goes completely ignored by the "opinion" anchors?

I live along Lake Erie, this is the FIRST time in 10 years that the lake has frozen over(not quite, but almost). When I was younger (30 years ago), the lake would freeze over every year. I understand how the weather works. The warmer it is along the Great Lakes, the bigger snow storms we get, that's why it's called Lake Effect Storms. This is the same thing happening in the Mid Atlantic. The warmer the air, the more moister in the air and more energy. Hence, huge snow storms. This isn't anything close to debunking Global Warming, it only proves it more.
But the nutjobs will use this as proof that it's a farce and they already are.

...its called 'climate change' and exceptional snow storms are all part of it, along with drought and heat increasing in some regions in the summer, mixed with heavier summer downpours when it does rain.
Since most of the droughts of unseen proportions in our time(see Georgia) are in the southern states, and southern states are more conservative that conservatives would believe in climate change/global warming than the left.
But then again I'm assuming that conservatives would think for themselves and not use FOX News as their collective brain.

I live 25 miles south of the Canadian border in NY state and about 45 miles from Lake Placid.
The last time we had several inches of snow was on New Years eve.
We barely have any snow cover now.

Five years from now California will be radically different place ecologically as well as biologically given the inability to secure long-term water despite intra-state agreements and watershed reclamation projects.
Prior to the heavy rainds that we just had, the water distributions promised to the State of California from other States was just 6% of the total contracted for. Without the rains that we had, this year California would have been short of its water-contract potables by 94%.
With the heavy rains that we acquired, this year there should not be any rationing however it's a friggen crap-shoot. Next year we may have to disallow any water flowing South to the Rio Grande, violating utterly the already-violated contractual agreements we have with Mexico, and we'll do it because we'll die of thirst otherwise.

If I remember my high school Earth Science correctly, it becomes more difficult for snow to develop when the temperature is very low. Harder to reach the dew point.
So during winter months global warming raises the temperature, which makes it easier for snow to develop, until the temperature is above freezing.
If we had really bitter, bitter long cold winters, like we used to, we wouldn't be having so much snow.

..we can't let these deniers win the argument, EVER. I'm often tempted to side with a group fighting science just to be sure we see the end of their argument. I'll explain: Fishermen constantly complain scientists don't what their talking about when it comes to catch totals. I say, Let them take all the fish they want, any size they want, whenever they want. They'll be out of business in a couple years because there won't be any fish any more and then they'll cry about federal money for relief. OR the people living on the coast who want to harden their beaches. Go ahead, if you want your beach to move inland until your house is underwater, go ahead and Harden that beach bub and then when you're house is underwater, cry out for federal money to rescue you. OR the state of UTAH is considering taking back federal land through eminent domain in order to reap the billions from privatizing the resources in those areas and when they are raped and have caused landslides, pollution,
whatever, then they'll cry for federal money.
Then after years of complaining about federal spending and big government, they're won't be any federal money at all and I'll fight to be sure they don't get a dime.

These things affect all of us. The one thing you don't want to fuck up is the ocean, because that is a huge part of the entire ecosystem.
If stupid people only hurt themselves, that would be one thing. But it is quite a different thing because they hurt everyone else in the process.
Blizzards may be proof OF global warning, not the other way around. But the real shame is that a vague, unconvincing, debatable "concept" like "Global Warming" has replaced clear, obvious, facts of destruction such as pollution, deforestation, and a host of other global issues. By lumping everything under the umbrella of "contributing to global warming", environmentalism has been set back 30 years. There needs to be focus, and that can't happen for some phenomenon to which nobody can link a direct cause.
Since everything from the internal combustion engine to cattle farming has been named as something that contributes to global warming, its a lost cause. People can't even be convinced to take simple, single baby steps (like recycle), yet we're going to expect them to make changes in every aspect of their lives? Fat chance.
The science seems to be more and more questionable but not to people who hold global warming, oops, climate change, as holy as a religion. Of course we should take care of the planet! But for what purpose? So we can all be forced back into the feudal middle ages with all that clean wood burning and throwing the trash out into the street next to the sewage (after all, toilets really are a waste of water....) The Chinese are not going to embrace the ridiculous measures that are being pushed on us and the scientists are fudging their numbers.....Where is the truth in this? If its your religion you will not question it. But no one could accuse you of being well-balanced.
