Glenn Beck thinks non-citizens shouldn't be counted in the Census
Glenn Beck devoted a long rant last night to his contention that the U.S. Census Bureau shouldn't be counting what he blithely calls "illegal aliens" -- i.e., undocumented immigrants.
But his argument -- that we shouldn't be counting people who can't vote -- doesn't merely cut against the undocumented. It cuts against all immigrants -- who, by definition, are also already non-citizens.
Moreover, the Census Bureau isn't charged with accurately counting the number of citizens living within the United States -- it's charged with counting the entire population.
What Beck wants Census to do -- that is, to exclude non-citizens from its count -- is in direct violation of its charter, which is to count the population whole:
The Census Bureau does not ask about legal (migrant) status of respondents in any of its survey and census programs. As examples, in the decennial census, the American Community Survey, and Current Population Survey as there is no legislative mandate to collect this information. Given the success of Census 2000 in counting nearly every person residing in the United States, we expect that unauthorized migrants were included among people who indicated that the United States was their usual place of residence on the survey date. The foreign-born population includes naturalized U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, temporary migrants (e.g., foreign students), humanitarian migrants (e.g., refugees), and unauthorized migrants (people illegally present in the United States).
Beck would have the Census omit not just unauthorized migrants, but also lawful permanent residents, humanitarian migrants, and foreign-born residents here legally.
Of course, he's arguing for this because he believes counting the undocumented will give the eeeeevil SEIU more power in its quest for total global domination or something like that. You have to watch the video to get it all, and even then it never quite holds together, much less make sense.

Lack of documented existence also makes for the justification in changes in public policy to exclude certain population (funding) and also to more easily subjugate other portions of the population.

conservatives like to tout "common sense." so wouldn't it be common sense to count all the people who live in the country, regardless of their citizen status? if you don't have an accurate idea of who lives in our country, how can you try to solve our problems? it doesn't get more common sense than that. this is simply conservatives shutting their eyes & putting their fingers in their ears when it comes to who lives in & contributes to our society.

I've been in this country for over 22 years, 8 of which illegal. I remember perhaps (vaguely) once having someone come by and/or dropping off a census form.
Right now I'm a legal resident, not a citizen.
Who will be, who gets counted?? Who knows. Possibly, in 'dangerous' places, such as East-Oakland, people don't even GET counted because they cannot find people to go door-to-door in these neighborhoods.
The census is wrong as it is, since it doesn't even count the lesbian and gay couples.

It's rather easy: Because it's hot. I know bisexual women who would agree.
If you want math, though: Looking at girls is nice. Looking at guys is not as nice. Simple math then dictates that 2 girls is better than 1 girl, and if we presume you need 2 participants to make out, then if both participants are girls it's mathematically better than only one.
Now, there are guys with all sorts of power and control issues who really can't handle the thought of two women together if they are purely interested in each other, rather than having some phallic desire buried in there somewhere, but that's a different ball of... something.
I forgot to add that there are many thousands of straight women who like the same thing with two guys--FAR more in the circles I travel than the inverse--so you might ask them the same question. If you're not familiar with the genre, just Google up "Harry Potter fanfic" or "yaoi", and be educated.

The census counts individual people not couples--straight, lesbian, or gay.
In the Constitution, they counted slaves and some others (except the Indians) as 3/4 of a person.
And they didn't have an income tax then.

My wife immigrated here from Nicaragua 20 years ago. She has her green card and is applying for citizenship. She has worked ALL 20 years, mostly supporting her deadbeat mexican husband who remains a fat, lazy, violent, unemployed US citizen. I would stand her work ethic up against anyone. I could get any number of character references from any number of managers and MD's at our local hospital, where she has worked for the last 9 years, first as a housekeeper and now as a sterile processing technician (one of only two people out of 20 actually credentialed in her dept., though working there for less than a year). When I met her she was a single parent making 24K/yr, and still managed to keep an apartment by herself while warding off her incessantly harassing, self entitled ex. She is golden and the absolute best thing that ever happened to me.
And yet in Glenn Beck's fascist world she is nothing.

Exactly. My wife is the same--a 100% legal non-citizen US resident who works and pays taxes just like Beck's "real" Americans. Someone who's been here for a good portion of her life, chose to live here, and has never been in any way undocumented. Someone who in Beck's narrow little world "doesn't count" because she's not American enough. Or something.
It must be hard to live in a world where everything around you is so frightening.

"Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons."
Count non-citizens as slaves or "Indians not taxed"; after all, some of those pesky immigrants do come from India.

More evidence here that Beck, so patriotic he makes himself cry, has never actually read the U.S. Constitution.
The Constitution says nothing about counting only citizens. Congress is required to "enumerate" the "respective Numbers" of the states. That enumeration begins with "the Number of free Persons," then ignores Indians and counts 3/5 of everybody else (ie., slaves). Both of those last ugly parts were amended or revised later, but the critical first part ("free Persons") has never been amended.
So unless Beck thinks that non-citizens are also non-free, he needs a constitutional amendment to accomplish what he's asking for. Good luck with that.
Beck and his kind need to remember that our nation is not a flag but a parchment. He should try wrapping himself in that for a change.

I thought this guy was an independent Constitutionalist? He wants to exclude people from the Census, basically disenfranchising their existence in the country, meaning they won't be counted in when delegations are counted, meaning they would be paying taxes without being represented within their state! Didn't we go to war with our Motherland, England, over that?

In order to gain the political power they've enjoyed for decades, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.
Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the demons they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The idiom "caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. As some states have passed laws against Illegal Immigrants many have flocked to states that will harbor them like Texas and California.
When these illegals are counted the states with high immigrant counts may gain more votes in the House of Representatives. Those Illegals can't vote!
Can you see Texas having possibly more Republican Clout and offsetting the majority Democrats now have?
