In the 50s and 60s you pretty much took your doctor's word, and up until 1975, when the AMA declared there was no medical reason circumcision should be done routinely, and this was restated in 1999 and 2005.
However, studies show circumcised men have less penile disease, and their partners tend to have a healthier gyn environment as well. In fact, several large studies just showed a 60% decrease in HIV transmission in circumcised males compared to uncircumcised males, so the AMA may change its stance on circumcision. 60-75% of American males are circumcised.
That's sounding 'routine' to me.
There were several decades where women were knocked out, enemaed and awoke to a dopy swaddled newborn. But really, if you were a run of the mill WASP or Christian, telling your doctor you didn't want youer son circumcised was akin to declining cancer treatment.

When I had my baby they made all the new parents sit in a short class before we went home. Nothing major just talking about what to expect and hygene and stuff. There were two little boys born that weekend. Only one chose to have a circumcism done.

Well i remember the boys locker room in a mixed junior high school in the 50's. Most (but not all) of the white boys were circumcised. Most of the black boys (but not all) were uncut. Interestingly, there's an NYT article this morning about recommending that newborn circumcision be routine, to help prevent AIDS. It seems that even at the peak, the circumcision rate was only 80%, and lower among blacks.
Circumcision of infants is male genital mutilation.

Ok, let's assume the Whitehouse is so wussy it caves and tries to appease the teabagging birthers/deathers (TBDs).
1. Whitehouse releases statement that Obama is circumcized. An hour later during interview on Fox News a TBD guest and Brit Hume demand a picture as evidences.
2. Whitehouse releases picture. An hour later a TBD expert on Fox expresses doubt to Nancy Grace regarding photo as it doesn't seem dark enough. Nancy says she expected better. Demands photo of POTUS in full frontal nudity.
3.Whitehouse releases photo as demanded. An hour later on Hannity's show a TBD panel discusses expert's allegation that the POTUS penis has been obviously photoshopped by the same Iranian that did the picture of the infamous missle shot and making the POTUS penis appear not only circumcized but larger than...Hannity then demands that Bill O'Reilly be allowed to personally examine the POTUS penis as Bill might be into that sort of thing, but not him.
4.Whitehouse agrees to examination but Bill O demurs that since Sean brought it up, so to speak, perhaps he should do the examination. Sean argues that it would take too long. Bill O finally agrees to come to the Whitehouse with camera and ruler. To Bill O's surprize he must get in line behind Rush Limbaugh who is already there, bent over and holding his ankles as Rush assumes this is the only position allowed white males at the Obama Whitehouse...

The rightard wing has created a whole new syndrome: Male Penis Envy.
We laugh at their next silly attempt to marginalize the president but this is yet another layer in the layer after layer attack that the Republicans have become so good at.
Sure it doesn’t matter and will wash out eventually and be silly in the end … but the individual layer doesn’t matter. It never does.
