Out here in the Pacific Northwest, we're well acquainted by experience with Bill O'Reilly's utter cluelessness about the cultural and political geography and climate of our region. But last night on The O'Reilly Factor, he really reached comedic heights.

His big scoop, warranting a full Team O'Reilly Investigation, was the news that the University of Oregon in Eugene is a boiling, roiling hotbed of liberalism -- so much so that only eight people out of the 186 professors surveyed identified as Republicans.

Actually, the survey is a somewhat peculiar clumping that only includes the schools of political science, law, economics, sociology and journalism -- which have a tendency towards liberal-arts profs anyway. Excluded from the survey were profs in the business, engineering, chemistry or math fields. One assumes the numbers would look somewhat different with their inclusion. So this is what has outraged O'Reilly?

Calling it an "appalling situation," O'Reilly sicced his ambush camera teams on the hapless provost of the school while he was en route to his car in a parking garage. Then he spent the next several minutes bashing Eugene and the UofO, with the help of Portland radio host Lars Larson, who was happy to bash his fellow Oregonians.

That's because, of course, Eugene has for many years been one of those cultural meccas for the hippie/Deadhead/peace/love/understanding crowd. The UofO campus has long attracted liberals and liberal-minded people, and the cultural climate is the kind that tends not to be very attractive to conservatives.

But then, that's just the way the Northwest is; there's a diverse array of people and cultures out here, and they each have their niches. The gamut runs from Eugene to Hayden Lake.

One wonders what O'Reilly might find if he were to do a similarly selective survey of the business and engineering schools at Washington State University in Pullman, where the cultural climate runs decidedly in the other direction. Bet we won't see Jesse Watters out there anytime soon.

In other words, O'Reilly is not breaking any news here. Nor is it anything to get particularly worked up about. But it is amusing to watch O'Reilly make a complete fool of himself, anyway.

personality studies of children have shown that the most easily frightened children and the ones least able to deal with ambiguity tend to become conservative. they are the whiny kids who are afraid of everything they dont understand.

who wants to hire the whiny kid? nobody. who wants to hire the kid who is afraid of anything they dont understand? nobody. people dont change, they just get older.

...is a professor of Political Science at a California university. She told me of a colleague a couple years ago who ran into big, big trouble with the uni after she had been told to remove an anti-Bush bumpersticker from her car. Apparently, lecturers of polysci are under a mandate to remain 'neutral' at peril of losing their jobs. Every time she accepts a new course, she must swear out a oath of allegiance to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies foreign and domestic - if she doesn't sign the oath, she doesn't teach. I think I'd be offended having to declare my loyalty to the state, but she's rather philosophical about it; it's a government run business, if she wants to keep her job, she follows the government run rules.

So I rather doubt that even if all those profs are Democrats that there exists a 'hotbed' of liberalism ANYWHERE in US state universities.

-Bricked-'s picture

With my profs at SFSU, though you could tell where they sat. With the other departments like my English prof, different story, she'd openly slam Bush and the Republicans in class and even dressed like she was on her way to a funeral when Bush was "re-elected".

Pericles's picture

Bill-O is suggesting that universities start up an AFFIRMATIVE ACTION program to hire QUOTAS of REPUBLICANS.

And yes, you're left with only one of two conclusions to draw. Either universities ARE hiring the most qualified candidates, and Republicans tend to be too stupid to hire, OR the universities are just being prejudiced against Republicans. I guess we're supposed to believe they ASK faculty candidates for their political affiliations on their CV and job applications so they can go out of their way to avoid hiring the Republicans. Leave it to Bill to champion the wrong conclusion.

Universities offer a liberal arts education. Good high schools and colleges teach critical thinking skills. There is an open exchange of ideas. Scientific inquiry is used at these schools. I know that is a little too "sciency" for Bill-O and it scares the crap out of him and his ilk. Critical thinking involves looking at the facts. Liberals think for themselves. Conservatives let Bill-O and college dropout Rush Limbaugh think for them.

BTW, anyone confronted by these goons should simply repeat the name "Andrea Mackris,Andrea Mackris,Andrea Mackris!" That tape will never see the light of day?

Does BillO expect that institutions of higher education need to screen their potential teachers for political affiliation? Does he want affirmative action for Republicans?

Does BillO have any PROOF or COMPLAINTS that Republicans have been discriminated against in the hiring process? Surely, there must be a lawsuit out there already if there was a problem at the University of Oregon!

This is one of the most ridiculous segments I've seen coming from him in awhile.

I know that Billo likes to stack the deck against dissenting voices-here having Larson-one of the most obnoxious of the far right pundits, along with himself, of course, argue against the obvious: liberals just tend to be more educated and well read. Especially those prof's in the Social Sciences/Liberal Arts from which the survey was taken. But geez, could he have found a more wishy washy 'liberal."?! (Maybe that was his intent!) On this segment, Tom should have loudly proclaimed what he mentioned, and when interrupted he should have asked not to be, and continued to speak. I admire his know-how with economics, but as a pundit or speaker for the progressive side, this was dismal.

Tom Hartman is one of those "domesticated" liberals that faux uses from time to time. Heaven forbid they should bring a free range liberal in. One might just take over the conversation and actually start making sense to Billo's fans.

There is no mandate telling people where to attend college. Students attend Oregon on their own free will. When I attended college, there are very few instances where anything political came into classroom discussion outside of classes such as history, economic, and political science.

This has much more to do with O'reilly putting a plug in for Lars Larson because Larson's ratings are tanking.

Not sure I agree with you on this one. I would not support a university, which receives federal money, showing political favor in the classrooms. All teachers/students, liberals, conservatives, and all degrees in between, need to be able to support their arguments using logic. If they want to support their arguments using theology, then let them go to a non-government-funded religious institution.

Having said that, I suspect part of the issue here is that O'Liely thinks the middle of the playing field is really far right of center. Or, put another way, O'Liely is so far to the right, he is unable to judge political center.

Tyler Durden's picture

is that he is quite silent regarding the openly conservative (and in some cases fully blown reactionary) state schools elsewhere in the nation. Of which there are plenty of examples, specially around the bible belt and certain parts of the midwest.

that educated people tend to be more liberal. There are lots of studies that show that the more college a person has, the more likely they are to vote Democratic. Whenever people like Bill O'Reilly or David Horowitz bitch about "left-wing bias" in universities, notice two things:

1. They only survey faculty from liberal, elite universities in the Northeast;

and/or

2. They survey faculty from liberal arts programs, NOT business, economics, engineering, math, etc.

I currently live in western Washington because it IS liberal, and I love it that way. I grew up in right-wing SE Ohio, and I went to grad school at Louisiana State University. I can say without hesitation that LSU is NOT a "liberal" university. Not by a long shot.

This is an ongoing story...some twit who is a grad student in Journalism wrote a snarky editorial about how tragic it is that the faculty is mostly liberal. He sat in the library and checked voter regs with faculty names. Note--he didn't write a news story about it, he wrote an editorial. I wonder why. Not only does O'Reilly do crappy journalism, he does unoriginal crappy journalism. Somebody had already beat him to the punch complaining about how there are too many liberals in a liberal profession in a liberal college in a liberal town in a liberal state. No mention of the fact that the twit could have chosen to attend a different school in, oh, pretty much anyplace. Can't wait for when O'Reilly scoops the world by finding out that there are nothing but far-right humpsacks teaching at Regent Law School.

it's clear that Universities don't want a bunch of stupid idiots teaching their kids. Why is that so hard to understand Billo? Could you imagine a university with professors with the same mental capacity of a guy like you? Morons that shout down people and make idiotic assumptions about what Liberal means? I guess the faculties can look out at the real world and see republicans with big mouths stammering on and on about all kinds of crap and they can say "aren't they cute and useless" but when it comes to something serious like peoples education, they have to draw the line and keep those fools where they belong...oh wait...I forgot, they don't belong anywhere. Let's just leave them on Television. That way we can point at them and laugh at their childish antics...Oh Bill...you're so funny. Ha Ha Ha.

Radio host Lars Larson is not an Oregonian. He just works here. He lives on Mt. Rainier Drive in Vancouver, WA.

Conservatives are people who have unconsciously suppressed feelings of shame, humiliation, and anger, for not being loved and supported as children. They automatically mask their true painful identities with pretense and projection.

This is why appearances over honesty and fact is more important to conservatives as opposed to the messy sometimes less structured liberal thinking .... some learning at the higher levels depend on allowing for more open thinking in order to grasp larger more complex concepts. When normal brain function is allowed to develop from childhood open and more progressive enlightened thinking is natural ...

The opposite is true when a child's development is short circuited and crushed trying to please the parent as they are neglected and shamed for having normal childhood impulses. Conservative are basically people who have stifled brain patterns and impulses from childhood and who suffer from unresolved loss and disconnect from their true selves. The results are examples like George Bush.

O'Reilly creates a false premise and finds a guest that will attempt to state the opposite side of this false premise so he can shame them and appear to be in control and without shame. His anger reaches the boiling point the second he feels judged or viewed as not being perfect ... the way O'Reilly treats liberals is the way he was treated as a child. His parents were shut down to who he was and in effect he had to burry his feeling of that shame just to survive that neglect.

Many conservatives coming from these very successful appearing families suffer the same condition ... shame for having been shamed by the shameless ... their parents. It's a cycle that can only be broken when the individual become aware and works through it becoming aware of the very thing they try to hide ...

In a sick and very sad way Bill O'Reilly's subconscious is trying desperately to get out and tell his story ... each day he reenacts his drama of shaming and becoming the victor over the shame. Each day he reenforces his own prison and helps others to do the same.

The affliction that is the conservative shut down shaming and blaming mindset comes from a neglected childhood mostly where the parents appear to be incredibly successful. This is way so many conservatives get caught in sexual situations ... sex is the one place they can act out their issues without reveling it's real nature to themselves. It's why they always look like deer caught in the headlights every time.

You're saying it's really just an extreme form of over compensation?

Big surprise there.

I'd suspect that guys like Billy used to get bullied and beat up by girls as kids.

The reason is that there is only 8 republicans in the state that are intelligent enough to even apply for the position. LOL
these people are insane just like oliar.
republicanism is a mental illness!
This is one of the funniest clips I have ever seen. Oliar was right republicans are stupid and can't cut the mustard.

There exist conservative intellectuals, but having spent quite a lot of time in academia myself I haven't met very many.

I suspect it's because they won't work for academic pay when so much wingnut welfare is available. Being a professor means sacrificing a great deal of income, especially in math, sciences, and engineering.

He advertised the best University in the Northwest.

I wonder how many unfair colleges across America have reverse opinions dominating their faculties? As long as it's Nazism being taught, it's okay. Liberalism? Oh hell no!

This little (in stature as well as heart for he is a coward) packs a pistol under his clothes. Why? In case some MAN scares him.

He is a bloviating piece of chump change. Everyone in Oregon hates him but Murdcock keeps him around to pester us.

Maybe the students at U of O don't want to PAY a tight minded freak from the right wind nuttia?

Maybe (oh hell, there IS no "maybe").

People don't want to go to college and spend a hundred grand to be turned into right wing Nazis anymore.

Like Larson and O'Reilly.

Hate to say it, but it looks like Tom Hartmann got sandbagged on this interview, it was a set-up all the way.

First of all, why is it anybody's business what party college professors belong to? If anything, Pro-Democratic educators can recognize the need for diverse opinions more than lock-step Republicans. Perhaps as educated men and women they recocognize that the Democratic Party is more for the people, the workers, the middle class, whereas the Republicans stand for war and making illegal profits from war and whatever else they can fuck up.
