Obama's Nobel makes wingnut heads explode. So why do right-wingers hate America?
By David Neiwert Friday Oct 09, 2009 10:00am
You all remember how the wingnuts exploded in joy at the news that Chicago had been denied its bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Rather typically, our RedState pal Erick Erickson crowed:
So much for improving America’s standing in the world, Barry O. Maybe now perhaps we can hope he will mature a bit on the issues of foreign affairs. But I doubt it.
Well, now their heads are exploding at the news that President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Here's what Erickson tweeted in response:
(Via ThinkProgress.)
Then there was Fox News. As you can see from the video above, it was like Scanners on steroids on Fox & Friends this morning, with Brian Kilmeade noting that this was the third honoree whose name was not George W. Bush. (Maybe those Swedes' "pure genes" got the better of them, eh?)
Even Michael Steele and the Republican National Committee got into the act:
“The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.”
Congratulations? Perish the thought!

Meanwhile, Media Matters has compiled a handy video of the early reaction:

End the wars now or return the prize!
Obama has expanded the wars, he has not brought a single troop home.
This is specious bullshit.
By the way, I have been a Democrat all my life. Obama is Bush ll.
What a joke.
... knock it off!
But seriously, the diplomatic approach President Obama took with the Middle East made inroads for his future diplomatic actions as well as those made by future presidents (assuming they don't mess it up.) This could invariably lead to a true, lasting partnership with the Middle East and one step closer to world peace.
Although there may be a political element to it, that man from Oslo mentioned that the award would help President Obama's political strategy, you can't say that there's no reason. In fact, you could say that he's doing an amazing job considering that every single Republican and right-winger on the planet is opposing/sabotaging him.
But look at it this way: America is such an awesome country that they can overcome racial strife and elect a minority as President, who can then become a Nobel Laureate within his first term. If that isn't American Exceptionalism at work, then you're just unpatriotic.
Read the Glenn Greenwald piece here.
I love when an article decries everyone who disagrees with it. That's a sure-fire way to show you've got legitimacy. It's also an excellent debating tactic to use when you are obviously on the winning side of the argument.
"Apparently, according to the DNC, if you criticize this Prize, then you're an unpatriotic America-hater -- just like the Terrorists, because they're also criticizing the award. Karl Rove should be proud."
This would be true, except today happens to be Opposite Day!
Greenwald is talking about precisely the thing you were doing.
Because I didn't say "If you didn't think he deserved the Prize you're unpatriotic." Instead, I said "If you disagree with American Exceptionalism you're unpatriotic." That's where Karl Rove stops being proud of me.
Unlike the hundreds of blogs and media outlets out there giving all the reasons why he shouldn't get it, I was giving my own little take on why he should have gotten it to try and make it "fair and balanced". Hopefully others will do the same.
But I'll give some props to Greenwald since he's being critical for the sake of being critical (he also bothered Bush), but the style he used for this article was very crude and didn't help his case.
The more you write, the less sense you make.
Obama can veto the obscenely bloated
DefenseWar Budget headed for his desk along with war supplemental which ensures the continuation of the perpetual war we have had since the advent of the National Security Act in 1947, he can veto it, remove the troops and I will cheer his prize on.While he is at it, he can dismantle the CIA and prosecute the war criminals. For final good measure.
You're the one who submitted a bad article, I'm just playing along.
And he should prosecute the war criminals in the Bush Administration, that's something I'd cheer on too.
What, are you a war monger!
I get it now, you're a troll. Sorry everyone, he tricked me. Drinks are on me tonight.
You are the troll.
Did you even read the Greenwald article?
You said:
That is the wording of a fascist.
I disagree with the concept of American Exceptionalism completely.
Uh...
Sarcasm?
Like I said, most what Greenwald does is critical for the sake of being critical. That's a good thing, it's called journalism, but he could have made the article much better by representing some the facts correctly.
And you're free to read into whatever I say. Calling me a fascist doesn't help your argument.
.
"Obama's Nobel makes wingnut heads explode. So why do right-wingers hate America?"
I figured you'd get how I made the connection between "American Exceptionalism", liberals and patriotism. A tongue-in-cheek critique of right-wing ideology for the last 8 years. Oh well, I swung and I missed; explaining the joke is never funny.
How do you feel playing the role of the hippie protester?
.
so pay me or get off my bridge please.
I don't think he deserves this prize either... I voted for Obama, I feel like his campaign was a masterstroke of false advertising in retrospect. I think he's an outstanding politician, which isn't nec a compliment.
I want a NPP too! I plan on saving the whole world at some point so that should count for something.
snap!
(I have to laugh over here, because the alternative has just been so... well... depressing.)
So Greenwald is suggesting that anyone who disagrees with Greenwald is a Karl Rove. These categorical can get a little tricky. Where will it end?
Can't close the window for the Lexus ad. What gives?

In a year when Obama has things slated to happen like the closing of gitmo and such by all means give him a prize he deserved but not now for simply engages in sane diplomacy again.
Obama does not deserve the NPP as of right now. The only reason I can find to try to give it to him now is for not continuing to act like bush when it came to diplomacy. Which is not worthy of a prize that be like giving your new boss a million dollars because he didn't try to sell the employees organs like the old boss did. Just because Bush was one of the worse if not the worst dipomats in modern history does not mean the next guy deserves a prize for engageing in sane diplomacy.
the old boss was fixing to sell?
Alice?
that he was awarded this prize as an incentive by the world community to do exactly that?
You give awards when someone has done something great . One of the reasons the world is were it is now is because of people giveing awards, bonus, tax brakes, and such in hopes that it will be an incentive or encouragement for them to do a great service.
would seem to be somewhat at odds with reality as seen on the innumerable US awards shows. My personal favorite gala is the "Weepies" which recognizes the best performances in accepting awards at other awards shows.
It's one of the reason the world is the way it is now. The idea that you have to get something upfront before you do something great is just plan stupid.
that virtually all awards are for who or what is most popular and have nothing to do with merit.
The people who gave him the NPP seemed to explain their reasoning quite well.
This is a day ALL AMERICANS should be celebrating!
Don't begrudge our President for this...be proud, be happy!

Stupid and short sided...If we are to continue to be a World leader we must look at the World not the republican stupidity of exclusion...
We must thank the Nobel committee for recognizing that in order to move forward ---we must have the World at the table not just the those who do not have our best interest at heart but only our pocket book!

commenters on this blog as well. None of whom, by the way, ever address the two reasons the committee gave as their rationale for the award.
to a thirty second sound bite. Your expectations may be a little high.
Its funny because he's the first black person to win the nobel peace prize, ever.
EVER I SAY!
That would come as a surprise to Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and Wangari Muta Maathai.
You know i was being sarcastic, right? i understand the ralph bunche and martin luther king jr were also, at some point, black.

The world while all not totally perfect has been ahead of the curve for quite a few years. I do believe they are talking about our Country, the one that is suppose to be the Leader in the World but has been set backwards by the Buffoon and Talking Monkey bush with his Spineless, Gutless, Cowardly American TRAITOR VP cheney. Remember these two LOW LIFES working hand in hand with the RACIST NAZI CHRISTIAN (RNC) the Goofy Opposition Party (GOP) Murder Incorporated and the Right Wing Wackos of America that set this Country back 90 years. Don't forget Martin Luther King.

your talking about. Both sides hate each others guts obviously.
...think about the other side very much; only when they come flying up in my face, arms waving, calling me names and begging me to insult them so that they can immediately afterwards feign hurty feelings. THEN I hate them. The stinkin' lib in me loves their humanity, but has little patience for their recalcitrant, sniveling bullcrap.
I have been obsessing with the Angry Group, insofar as I'd like to advocate for an effective strategy to engage with them and begin the long overdue process of truly healing our nation.
Like many of those herein above, I am stunned that the Nobel Prize has been awarded to Obama. I expected someone like Mukwege to be the recipient, but that is not what has happened. OBAMA has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and that will remain the actuality whether any of us like it or not.
Thus, I would encourage all activists of all stripes to get past the need to whinge about who got this award and who should have gotten it! We activists and progressives must advocate that Obama successfully brings his hope-inspiring political promises to fruition, and that he makes decisions that facilitate our nation's long anticipated recovery.
I suspect that many who have posted herein above doubt Obama, given his actions thus far. I encourage the doubters to continue activism that shows Obama and the world that we expect our leader to make good his promises. In short, we MUST be the change we hope to see in this world!
...deserves the Nobel peace prize needs to join the armed forces and help "our president" spread his "version" of peace across the globe.

From now on, when a right-winger tells you what "America" thinks or how "America" feels, you should feel free to point out that Republicans stopped speaking for America a long time ago.
There's America, and then there's Republica. Republicans live in Republica, where it's always dark and there's no science. But lots of guns!
and a shit-ton o' jebus!
teh chicks are Hot! Republica has Michelle Malkin and Megyn (why do you hate a's) Kelly, And "America" has Rachael Maddow. And in Republica, were gonna get a new Bible without all that liberal Jesus crap. And, if we don't like something, we just bomb the shit out of it. And, of course, in Rebublica, Fox news is Reality.
lots of Fox programming, and lots of anger, and lots of hypocrisy. Is there any hope we can heal this enormous wound to our nation?! Any at all?!?!

be from all the sour grapes?
More likely they're serving frottage
It must be a great feeling working at Cluster-Fox today....EVERY employ - to the man - has a headache....I think the DNC summed it up pretty well..
"The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore - it's an embarrassing label to claim."
Didn't we chastise the Republicans for accusing Democrats who spoke out against the war of being against America? Why are we applauding the DNC for doing the same thing now that the sides have flipped?
Turning the other cheek? Not working out so well.
If we're going to take that attitude, what makes us think we're any different from the wingnuts on the other side of the aisle? How can we claim righteous indignation if we're going to do the same thing ourselves when our party is in power?
...we're right and they're wrong. That's it.
the hatred and jealousy coming from those three idiots! If Bush had won that, those same three would be throwing a damn party!
can we please acknowledge that the Corporate Megalomaniacs who have usurped our nation have worked steadily and successfully to convince these poor souls that their ideology is unimpeachable, and that the people who do not embrace their ideology are the enemy?!? These Angry Group people are our brothers and sisters, our fathers and mothers, our aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, sons, daughters, cousins, grandparents--if nothing else, they're our fellow citizens!! (Frankly, I'm impressed--and quite hopeful now--that so few of our fellow citizens have succumbed to the corporatists' propaganda!!!)
I would much rather devote my time and energy to stopping the vile usurpers! We must change whatever legislation allows them to own our airwaves and our politicians! Oh, and while we're at it, we must rid our nation of any politician who is on the corporatists' payola. We can't afford to ignore the corporatists any more, and we can't afford to keep swallowing their bipartisan red herrings. As long as we play their game--vilifying the 'Republicans' or the 'Angry Group'--they win. And, they are laughing all the way to the bank!
P. S. Impeaching Cheney and Bush is a huge first step to breaking the corporatists. Achieving single payer health care ranks right up there, too. Just look at how much energy and money they are expending to derail both these efforts!

Her response?
"I'm not superstitious, I'm a Christian."
I had to keep myself from laughing.
But it occurred to me that the best definition for superstition is that it's the non-systemic form of supernaturalism. And religion of any stripe certainly meets the criteria of supernaturalim (some Asian ones excepted).

on this topic, nobody seems to have bothered to find out the reasons the award was given, much less critique them.
He could have discovered a cure for cancer and the righties response would be the same.
What I've heard though is his work on loose nukes, before even deciding to run, got it for him.
He could walk on frakin water and wignuttia would say he couldn't swim.
This is the Nobel Peace Prize. You generally don't have to "find out the reasons the award was given, much less critique them."
It's not like we're unfamiliar with Obama's record, we've kept a running commentary.
And never did I read anyone who thought he already had a Nobel Prize coming.
There are as many on the left who relish the opportunity to attack Obama any time the name is mentioned as there are on the right.
And as they are all free to offer what they feel is a relevant point to this discussion, I feel free to point out that none address the specific rationale given by the committee in making the award.
Obama himself didn't think he had this coming.
My take on this is they gave him the award for changing the ship's course more towards peace than belligerence, with the hope he continues on that course.
I'm not sure the change in course will be effective, so while I congratulate him, I question whether he really deserved it.
Concentrate and listen for the word "attempts."

They hate us for our freedoms.
Obama did more to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize by November 5th, 2008 than all of the previous winners combined. He had just defeated the greatest threat to world peace in more than 100 years; the Republican Party.
If 60,000 more voters in Ohio had voted for John Kerry than George W. Bush in 2004, then "President" John Kerry would have deserved the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005!
In fact, Obama deserved the Nobel Prize for ECONOMICS for that November 4, 2008 defeat of the Republican Party as well.
Both of the last "legally" elected Democratic Presidents ( Gore and Obama ) both have Nobels on their mantles now. Suck on that neo tards.
Bushtard did win that Facebook poll for WORST EVER President by a landslide. More political capital for Chimpy Mc Dumbfuck.

It sure is.. Actually.. the laugh factor is only thing the wingnuts have going for them now.
Never thought of it like that. Even if we all end up in the poor house that's a major achievement we can be proud of.
And that's enough in itself.

Obama did more to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize by November 5th, 2008 than all of the previous winners combined. He had just defeated the greatest threat to world peace in more than 100 years; the Republican Party.
That is awesome. Can I borrow it?
I already quoted a Yahoo opinion article when talking to a friend this morning (not the exact wording, but the spirit is here):
(The GOP) would try to ban bacon if Obama had a BLT for breakfast.
Republican Party.
The Party will still remain, but we have witnessed the death of conservative economic, social and foreign policies.
That's it right there.
To paraphrase this morning's news coverage:
Headline: "President of the United States wins Nobel Peace Prize".
MSM: Oh, what an awful situation. How will Obama ever recover from this blow to his image? Will this high praise of his accomplishments and agenda completely undermine his legislative priorities? Can he distance himself from the "effete Europeans" while still maintaining their trust? Will Americans piss on flags in protest of their own, democratically elected commander-in-chief being awarded this tremendous honor?
Me: Whether this award (that the president did not personally seek, btw) is 100% deserved or not, the Nobel committee obviously wanted to recognize (and hopefully bring attention to all USians) the fact that a great deal of the world has developed a new respect for America solely at the hands of this one man. It makes me honored to have voted for him, and hopefully the president will use this as a mandate to enact the sweeping reforms that he has promised (as if the 2008 election weren't enough).
I also think it's time to send the MSM back to the planet they came from...
... we're just proving that some of us can de-volve as well as evolve.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap_YixOosgI
that its their damn award and they can give it to whomever they damn well please.
...and that seems to be the opinion of every living Nobel Laureate that has come out with a press release so far.
:)
"President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.”
I don't know about "job creation, fiscal responsibility or backing up rhetoric with concrete action" but I'll bet my 68 Shelby that one award he will win is the 2012 Presidential election.
... since Steele doesn't control who gets awards or not. Even Steele's own Party is getting ready to throw him to the curb.
and ignoring the real practical need$ of Americans it may not be that easy.
I am pretty sure Obama's a one-termer.
So he shoulkd definitely keep the prize, cuz he's gonna need the money. Those little girls are gonna be expensive to keep in the styole they've become accustomed to...
It's a good career move, cuz it'll raise his value as a motivational speaker...
Sure he is not liberal enough for some of us, but the man can campaign and who out there on the right can run against him.
Pawlenty? Paul? Huckabee? I think not.

...but don't think she has the stomach for another run. She'll just pile up the cash as GOP "spokes model" and of course, be endlessly entertaining for us.
no one in the GOP likes her much, I don't think.
If that's true, no one's going to nominate her.
I think the GOP is STILL Lost In The Woods, for a potential Presidential candidate, and everything else.
