Well, we knew the National Tea Party Convention this week was going to be a real festival of outrageous wingnuttery, but Tom Tancredo's speech to kick things off will already be hard to top:

Tancredo: Every year, the liberal Dems and the RINO Republicans turned up the temperature ever so slightly. It seemed after awhile that we'd all be boiled to death in a cauldron of the nanny state.

And then something really odd happened -- mostly because we do not have a civics literacy test before people can vote in this country.

[Applause]

People who cannot even spell the word "vote," or say it in English -- [applause] -- put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. Name is Barack Hussein Obama.

It's hard to say which was more disturbing: Tancredo's apparent call for reinstituting laws that, as John Byrne at Raw Story points out, were a fundamental component of Jim Crow in the post-Reconstruction South, or the massive round of applause he received for saying it. (The New York Daily News has more on the literacy tests.)

Yes, these people really are nuts. Witness, for instance, the applause Tancredo got for saying he was glad McCain lost -- because, after all, McCain was for "amnesty" too:

If McCain had been elected, the neocons would be writing flattering editorials in the Weekly Standard and the Wall Street Journal. Congressman Gutierrez and President McCain would have been posing in the Rose Garden with big smiles as they received accolades from La Raza for having finally passed an amnesty.

Of course, most of the speech was just Tancredo channeling Glenn Beck. (The boiled frog metaphor was the giveaway, along with the "committed socialist ideologue" bit. As well as lines like this:

So the race for America is on, right now. The President and his left-wing allies in Congress are going to look at every opportunity to destroy the Constitution before we have a chance to save it.

But as always with Tancredo -- as with his audience -- the real motivation comes down to defending white culture:

Some things we can deal with in just a political way -- which is, you know, by the votes we cast. Other things will require a commitment to passing on our culture -- and we really do have one, you know, it is based on Judeo-Christian principles whether people like it or they don't!

[Applause]

That's who we are! That is who we are! And if you don't like it, don't come here! And if you're here and you don't like it, go home! Go someplace else!

As the editors at Imagine 2050 observed:

It is obvious that Beck and Tancredo are trying to push the issue of immigration to the forefront of the tea party movement, something that was explicitly clear during Tancredo’s speech. The acts that followed paled in comparison to Tancredo, who definitely stole the first night spotlight of the three day event.

Indeed. If you thought the Tea Partiers went nuts at those town-hall forums on health care, wait till immigration reform is the issue. It's going to be very ugly.

Tom Tancredo, of course, will be leading the way, pitchfork in hand.

Didn't know there was going to be a quiz, did you?

"Trust no one, Mr. Mulder." - Well-Manicured Man

A socialist is a word that scares crazy people even though they haven't a clue what it means. Beck said it was bad so they just run with it from there. Tom's a little behind though, the new scary word is "progressive". I mean there is a big bad progressive hiding behind every tree, or so Glenda Beck says.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

So,

"Socialist" is the new "liberal"?

"Trust no one, Mr. Mulder." - Well-Manicured Man

I think socialist was the new liberal in the fall and winter collection. Now as spring and summer approach I believe they have made progressive the new socialist which would make it the old liberal.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

It used to be fashinoable to attack "Li-burr-uhls" because many felt a sense of retraint and decency about suggesting their fellow Americans were afflicted with diseased ideology chocked filled with "Ists." But with all this pig flu running around, you gotta wash your hands and not worry about watching your tongue.

It is either that or they worry about using the "n" word in public.

Does that mean I can be a liberal again? I really like it better than progressive.

It probably means you were never going to be counted as a REAL progressive anyway.

I'm a socialist.

I want common ownership of the means of production. essentially ownership of factories realigned along the lines of mondragon or zanon.
I want a state run public health insurance system. Guaranteed housing and income programs. How does this describe Obama

.....no, correction, how does this describe ANY elected democrat.

Pretty much content to mouth his master’s playbook. I sent him an e-mail asking where he stood on the Republican plan to balance the budget by 2050. So far no response on cutting Social Security, turning it over to Wall Street and privatizing Medicare.

Bigot red meat for bigoted bottom feeders. Nothing to see here. Hotels are allowed to make money and they can book whoever they want.

I hope the local arena and restaurants applied good business synergies by booking a tractor pull and having all you can eat barbecue buffets during the convention dates. Perhaps the local retailers decided to run a "white sale" that week".

there was a time when i supported parts of what tancredo stood for, as his argument against illegals was about attacking corporatist power

but i guess that was all a cover for his racist leanings

btw...why are these people applauding brown?

he is everything they hate

a fiscal conservative....but a cultural lib....the guy supports abortion rights and gay marriage

um, he's not a fiscal conservative.
he's deep in the pockets of wall street and the banks.
there is actually no such thing as a fiscal conservative, it's a myth perpetrated by the GOPers and eaten whole by an apathetic public who can't be bothered to actually check voting records.

walt kovacs's picture

he still isnt a "pure" wingnut

therefore, he would not be accepted by this crowd

um... one other thing... where did you come up with this strange idea that he supports gay marriage?

1. He is against gay marriage.
2. He is also against a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.
3. However, please see point #1.

the definition of 'fiscal conservative' is one who does wall st's bidding, and one who destroys economies and budgets in the process.

i think it is high time that the term 'fiscal conservative' was called out for its corporatist leanings and its failure to produce a healthy economy.

the rise of the 'fiscal conservatives' was about the same time (80s) that the american economy began to turn for the worse (rich people not included)

make no mistake it is the capitalists that these very wing nuts worship at the altar of capitalism than has allowed open borders for decades for cheap labor to enhance profits.

bet most of these religious folks dont have a clue they fail to understand we are all souls on a journey.

their savior knew no boundries when it came to helping the poor and needy.

there is religion and there is compassion and the two dont apppear to mix in america.

look close at their agenda and you will find one word that pops out selfisheness over and over and over.

they are for lack of a better word bottom feeders.

they will have a bake sale and raise 400 hundred dollars for person losing their home over medical costs and then vote against a universal health care system. then pride themselves for months and think of themselves as good christians for raising that 400 dollars.

selfishness to the core as most religious are.

the capitalists are smart very smart to keep these wing nuts in fear of socialism. it used to be communism. fear works on these folks just as selfishness works.

and it is my generation that is the worst. most old folks are racists and selfish. we are a sorry lot in our old age.

I've got a kind of morbid appreciation for their guile. They appeal to selfishness to get their minions, the teabeggers, do do their bidding. And the poor dittohead, tea-partying slobs never realize -- until it's too late, if ever -- that they hurt themselves for the benefit of the rich and powerful.

Remember "The Usual Suspects"? The gang of crooks recruited to win a share of a huge heist, only to go willingly to their own doom. Believing to the end that a great fortune awaited.

Who is Keyser Soze? . . . Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Soze. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that, poof. He's gone.

bad_robbie's picture

Were you intending to respond to a different comment?

Oddly enough, Tom Tancredo, illiterate people are still capable of reason and thought, and despite their compromised reading/writing skills, are still able to talk, listen, and convey ideas. And of course are thankfully able to not vote for corrupted little bottom-feeding shitbags who say stupid things like “we should have literacy tests before people are allowed to vote”.

Shadowgm's picture

A 'civics literacy test' ... which people like Palin and even Tancredo himself would FLUNK. (Remember, he tried to raise a stink about Rep. Keith Ellison being sworn in using the Koran, when NO HOLY TEXT IS USED AT ALL ... only in photo ops after the fact.)

That is how many voted for Tom Tancredo in that state's Republican Presidential primary.

IMO, Tom Tancredo doesn't have a leg to stand on regarding immigration because both sets of his grandparents were born in Italy. Typical RW bullshit, I got mine!

According to the 1920 census, there was only one Tancredo family living in the US. Tom's dad, Gerald, is not listed as a member of that family, and they were in Kings County, NY.

If you truly wanted to be honest about it, all American are mutts.

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all

bad_robbie's picture

Tommy wants to bring back the good old days when American politics, culture, etc. were solidly controlled by WASPs. People knew their place and didn't upset the white, Judeo-Christian culture that prevailed. He longs to keep out and send away those who would dilute our white culture with their funny names.

One may wonder if those "good old days" ever really existed except in the childhood memories of Tancredo and his friends Beck, Hannity and O'Reilly. But what is true, is at least three of those four guys wouldn't have been allowed to buy a house in my parents' neighborhood. And we're just talking 40 years ago. It was quite an event when the first family with a name ending in a vowel moved in, not to mention the first Irish.

But they've got theirs now. No need to dwell on the past. Time to "conserve" their own and make sure no one else gets a piece of the pie.

And hey, while we're at it, let's convince a bunch of undereducated and under-insured folks that the what they really need is a civic literacy test in order to vote and that decent affordable health care will be their ruination. The cognitive dissonance, it hurts so bad. Ignorance is strength!

my g-g-g. grandfather Lorenzo Trevino was born in the San Antonio area about 1827. My absolute latest ancestor to come from Mexico was my abuelito's father who came before WWI (I know because I found his draft card, evidently he was drafted). In general my Mexican ancestors are tracable to what's now the US/Mex border back to the 1520's. My British Isles ancestors were all here by 1750, and of course, my Choctaw, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Apache ancestors were here for thousands of years.

When Tanestupido opens his mouth about immigrants all I can do is wonder when he will shut his newbie mouth.

George W. Bush was a committed socialist? To the best of my knowledge he's the only person ever put into the White House by illiterates. I mean I knew he should be committed but this isn't what I was thinking.

Who needs civics now that the supreme court can decide who becomes the president? Harkening back to the 2000 presidential election.

unless Thomas is registered in Nevada. If so, we know from the results Clarence might have voted for Alan Keyes. Nobody gambled on Tommy in Nevada.

Judging by the signs I've seen at teabag events half the baggers wouldn't be allowed to vote if tested.

LOL. I love that one!

Answer: Yes.

This is nothing more than a case of “sour grapes” on Tancredo’s part. Just like the fox in the Aesop fable, Tancredo is trying to suggest that the Democratic Party victory can only mean that there’s something wrong with the American voting bloc who put Obama in the White House. Let's remember that Tancredo was a GOP candidate in the 2008 presidential election -- but the nail in his presidential coffin seems to have been his refusal to participate in a GOP debate hosted by the Spanish-speaking channel Univision in December 2007, leading to his decision to withdraw from the race only a week or two later. While he deserved some credit for standing by his principles -- unlike another GOP candidate, Mitt Romney, who did participate in the debate -- the fact nevertheless remains that he probably cost himself whatever Latino votes (if any) he might have had before then with that decision and shot himself in the foot. Sounds to me like someone's bitter...

Someone needs to remind Tancredo that in a democracy, voting is a right which the citizens of that nation are entitled to have simply as human beings —- not a privilege which people must earn and prove themselves worthy to have. Unfortunately for Tancredo, one of the drawbacks of living in a free society is that the people within that society are at liberty to make decisions without consulting anyone else. This means that they’re entitled to make decisions which you don’t like. No matter how you try to slice it, requiring the American people to measure up to a certain standard in order to cast a vote —- particularly since it raises the question of exactly whose standard should be used as the benchmark! —- inevitably makes our country that little bit less free, since those who for whatever reason fail to pass the test will indisputably be at the mercy of those who succeeded and will become a de facto group of second-class citizens without power in this country.

Also, someone should tell Tancredo that judging by several tests which have been conducted on high school students around the country as well as a test which has been posted online, the fact is that a substantial majority of the American people would probably be unable to pass the kind of civics literacy test that he’s proposing! According to AmericanCivicLiteracy.org which has a test posted online, a whopping 71.4% of 2,508 Americans who initially took their test failed to answer more than 59.9% of the questions correctly. The overall average score was a positively dismal 49%, and barely over 10% of the people tested scored 70% or better. (One especially odd result from this test was the finding that elected governmental officials actually scored an average of 44% —- five points less than the average American!) If this test —- which I’ve taken myself and which really shouldn’t be this hard for people to pass — were used as the benchmark for who is eligible to vote and who’s not, we would end up with anywhere between 51% and 90% of the American population being unable to vote and at the mercy of a minority…and that could not even remotely be considered a democracy.

Question: Where are Indiana, California, and Wyoming?
Answer: Pennsylvania. (There are places in PA with these names).

Question: Is Virginia farther west than Detroit, MI?
Answer: True. (Lee County, VA at its farthest point is technically farther west than Detroit).

Question: Can Russia actually be seen from a U.S. house?
Answer: Yes. There's a village on Little Diomede Island, Alaska, USA, that faces across a small strait (and the Intl Dateline) Big Diomede Island, a part of Russia.

So as a voter of Prez Obama's I'm confident, you racist eff, that i could take that test and pass it doing circles around you. if anyone is an ideologue, you disgrace, itd be you.

Teddy Roosevelt was called a socialist in his day because he dared to
take on the corporate interests. In order to get the most amazing places
on earth saved from the mining industries and forest companies he had
to pass the antiquities act which allowed him to skirt congress. He was also
attacked for creating the bird sanctuaries, which prevented many species from
going extinct due to the hat industry. Barack needs to use the bully pulpit
and go directly to the people to fight off these rascals. If the tea baggers of
Teddy's day had their way many species would be extinct and the Grand Canyon
would not be protected.
