(In the above video, Newt calls Obama a Nazi-Commie "threat to our way of life." But Esquire's new profile destroys him as a spokesman for Conservatives)

Newt Gingrich, like many movement Conservative figures of the last twenty years, is very skilled at debating for his beliefs. He is a black belt wordsmith of the tenth degree and has received the coveted "H2O" lapel pin from the Aqua Buddha himself. We see him on FOX News and every other news program pontificating his conservative values incessantly and to the untrained eye or casual passerby, he could appear intelligent and smart. However, we know the truth. He's a typical right wing windbag that uses those same words to lie his way to the top of the conservative food chain. Don't take my word for it, how about someone who knows him a little more intimately--like his second wife Marianne Gingrich? Marianne has the details:

But there was something strange and needy about him. "He was impressed easily by position, status, money," she says. "He grew up poor and always wanted to be somebody, to make a difference, to prove himself, you know. He has to be historic to justify his life."

His actions are all a lie--meaningless except for the great payoff from rich GOP supporters.

"There's somebody else, isn't there?"

She kind of guessed it, of course. Women usually do. But did she know the woman was in her apartment, eating off her plates, sleeping in her bed?

She called a minister they both trusted. He came over to the house the next day and worked with them the whole weekend, but Gingrich just kept saying she was a Jaguar and all he wanted was a Chevrolet. "'I can't handle a Jaguar right now.' He said that many times. 'All I want is a Chevrolet.'"

He asked her to just tolerate the affair, an offer she refused.

He'd just returned from Erie, Pennsylvania, where he'd given a speech full of high sentiments about compassion and family values.

The next night, they sat talking out on their back patio in Georgia. She said, "How do you give that speech and do what you're doing?"

"It doesn't matter what I do," he answered. "People need to hear what I have to say. There's no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn't matter what I live."

Wow. This says it all. People like Newt believe they are above it all.
How can Americans trust this man's word on any moral or policy issue? He doesn't believe he has to live by his words, but you do! Even though he has no idea or doesn't trouble himself to care how those words would hurt working class families, he's very happy doing just the opposite.

I know there's a psychological disorder somewhere in the DSM-IV that fits that one. We all knew that he served his first wife divorce papers in her hospital bed, but not these intimate details. And the one thing that this piece does tell us is that he doesn't live by the words his sermonizes to us about, nor does he believe he should. Anyway, he is a one creepy MFer.

She says she should have seen the red flags. "He asked me to marry him way too early. And he wasn't divorced yet. I should have known there was a problem."

Within weeks or months?

"Within weeks."

That's flattering.

She looks skeptical. "It's not so much a compliment to me. It tells you a little bit about him."

And he did the same thing to her eighteen years later, with Callista Bisek, the young congressional aide who became his third wife. "I know. I asked him. He'd already asked her to marry him before he asked me for a divorce. Before he even asked."

He told you that?

"Yeah, he wanted to — "

Man, is he the marrying kind or what? There is so much in this article that I could write post after post after post and never stop and I'd still be on the second page. I think we should ask Tucker Carlson how he feels about Newt now since he dubbed him the "soul" of the modern conservative movement.
Tucker Carlson anoints Newt Gingrich as 'soul of the GOP'; Fox's MacCallum compares him to Reagan

Carlson: Yeah, this is about who's going to lead the Republican Party, not simply who's going to be the chosen presidential candidate in '12. But who's gonna be the soul of the party?

And there are a bunch of different elements here. I think Sarah Palin's presence, as always, brings a lot of excitement, also a lot of drama. And so a lot of stories going into this were about whether she will arrive in the first place, or whether she'll show up, whether she'll talk. Probably not a good storyline for the GOP.

Newt Gingrich, looks to me, is emerging as, certainly the intellectual center of the Republican Party -- the smartest, most energetic guy, and I think last night, kind of, is -- part of the process is solidifying that. Newt Gingrich is, I believe, running for president, and he's certainly the guy people are looking to for ideas in the Republican Party.

Newt Gingrich for President in 2012. Why tell the truth when you can Lie to the Top?

Selfish, corrupt, hypocritical, unmoral, self righteous, greedy, hate mongering, and thoughtless.

Mormons point to marital situations like Newt's to argue that they should have the right to practice polygamy. Maybe we should have a ban on letting Newt marry anyone (and nulify his current marriage), because letting Newt marry and marry some more can lead to things like polygamy! :P

No surprise here. These guys are borderline sociopaths, and it's not surprising that he is able to rationalize his hypocrisy so easily.

Don't expect his lemming followers to give a shit about this either. They'll respect his role as a mercenary for their grand cause, regardless of the hypocrisy. Besides, he can always repent later on and all is forgiven.

Borderline my ass. Gingrich is a bona fide sociopath.

I say borderline because I doubt he has rotting corpses stacked in his basement.

Expecting them to suddenly become not stupid is insanity.

They will continue to be stupid and to listen to him when he tells them they are not stupid.

Because guess what?

They're stupid.

He, as an articulate role model of the right who is able to present a persona of success and power, gives other permission to act out and on their lowest, most ignoble and most base instincts. He gives them freedom from old expectations of society that they live up to higher ideals. He frees them from a need to struggle to be better than they are. HE convert the sin into the virtue. You want to be a bigot, even though there may have been a time that you were taught it was wrong? Uncle Newtie shows you that it's OK. Want to indulge in hate as a central theme of life and consciousness? Do it, Uncle Newt blesses your journey down that path. Do you want to always follow the path of least resistance all the days of your life? Newt grants you his permission.

Not only are they not stupid, they also are not bad, or evil or whatever, regardless they bad and evil they support, regardless the bad and evil they might do. Newt gains power by being a seducer. He accrues personal power that others cede to him by granting permission to turn to the dark side.

It is an old an proven pattern.

Paul's picture

which means he's a predator. And he's a successful predator, which means that he is an adept at creating a public persona and pretense of trustworthiness. Maintaining a pretense of trustworthiness is the most vital skill a sociopath develops, because it allows the sociopath to lure in potential victims upon whom he preys, in an almost infinite number of ways. Were he not adept at this skill, it would not serve him and sociopathy wouldn't be the successful behavior that it has been in his case. He would fail as a functioning sociopath.

He can run a charm offensive upon people who don't know him or who don't know him well. But maintaining the pretense consumes energy, the output of which he can't maintain. Eventually, the real Newt comes out and becomes known to those who end up knowing him well or being close to him, and the relationship fails. I'm sure he charmed all 3 of them at first. Eventually, each one pierced his pretense.

People like Newt do not make actual bonds with other human beings. To Newt, all others lack objective reality. The only reality is self and selfish desire. Self is the supreme and only reality he believes in. In his guts, he almost certainly doesn't believe that any other person is actually real, like he is to himself. All others are just objects in his environment to be used and manipulated as suits his whims and desires. Not being objectively in-the-guts real, all others are also of no consequence. He can use, abuse, harm discard as needed all others; it doesn't matter to him, because they don't matter. I'll bet all 3 of those women can attest to that about him. They may also have had their own issues, as in like attracting like. Water always finds its own level.

His personality is rapidly becoming the typical personality model amongst the right.

so, it works for him.

ixnay's picture

... in one hand reactionary/conservative/corporate types tend to model success in terms of how a sociopath would understand it.

Yet all those right wing politicians, CEOs, religious leaders, etc... without exception all of them operate under the notion of an inherent morality to their actions (most likely excused in their feeble minds by the pretenses of pious and religious attitudes).

The sad realization is that for the most part, the modern American society looks like the system a group of sociopaths would come up with. It is the hen house designed by foxen, too bad the chickens are so inept at figuring out all those weird features are not designed for their protection but to maximize the fox's dinner intake.

CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"

Wheels's picture

I think a good example of this is how right wingers completely missed out on the moral from the movie Wall Street. To them, "Greed is good" was the moral of the story.

Paul's picture

isn't actual morality. It's instead a convoluted contstruct of rationalizations that enable the sociopaths to do bad/evil things as a lifestyle that preserves their capacity to tell themselves that they are good people who never do anything wrong. A differentiation used to be made that divided people with social personality disorders into sociopaths or psychopaths, wherein the sociopath originally has conscience but who, through a lifetime effort of ignoring conscience and its promptings effectively kills conscience...as if they'd never had conscience in the first place. On the other hand, the psychopath never showed any evidence of ever having been born with the capacity to experience conscience. The sociopath would thus spend extraordinary amounts of energy maintaining rationalizations, while the psychopath would spend little or no energy. By these criteria, I would call Newt a sociopath and Sarah a psychopath (she's so far gone that it wouldn't ever occur to her that she has ever done anything that would need explanation). The end result, though, is that for both personality types, morality is first whatever advances the agenda of the supreme self (if it's good for me, it's righteous); beyond that, anything that can be rationalized is high morality. Morality, in other words, has zero basis in principle for these guys. It's why they can rationalize and excuse any act and every act. The only time they truly approach a condition of principle-centered moral sense is when they are experiencing moral outrage at a wrong that has been committed against their own person; however, they can go out 2 seconds later and perpetrate the same exact wrong on another person and see nothing whatever wrong with their action. Because self is the only and supreme reality for these people, their morality is also an extremely selfish thing.

That's one of the reasons why they almost always fail at long term relationships and alliances.

This would explain a lot about he and his sister's relationship. She clearly thinks the guy is a complete asshole.

Paul's picture

To hear Gingritch, who is a clinically definable sociopath (probably malignant) with accompanying narcissitic personality disorder, make pronouncements on the character of any other person is laughable. The man is amoral, lives his life without giving any evidence of having a functioning conscience, is delusionally dishonest, is a consumate and self-serving predator...just the kind person the GOPers consider a true leader. And he's criticizing Obama? That's really rich. Obama can be criticized for failures of integrity and his willingness to abandon principles on a moment's notice; these kinds of failings, which are all matters of choice, are turning him into a spectacular failure as a president, and are slowly corroding him as a human being. But "commie-nazi threat to our way of life"? That's a good one.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Newt:

From the 1995 Vanity Fair profile:

In the spring of 1977, [Anne Manning, who admitted to a relationship with Gingrich that started during his 1976 campaign] was in Washington to attend a census-bureaus workshop when Gingrich took her to dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant. He met her back at her modest hotel room. "We had oral sex," she says. "He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, "I never slept with her." Indeed, before Gingrich left that evening, she says, he threatened her: "If you ever tell anybody about this, I'll say you're lying."

I think they'd be a dream ticket. The GOPers would probably make them the candidates and not see what a disaster it would be for them, being that they are all of a like mind...

They didn't have a snowball's chance in hell either time, did they?

corporations can throw unlimited amounts of money at politicians, it doesn't matter WHAT they believe or how moral they are or are not.....if they're the corporation's pick, they're gonna get elected.

Thank you, Bush Supreme Court.....you have royally screwed this country for good.

A search on Google News for gingrich mistress puts an ad at the top of the page for the Gingrich newsletter, including the tag line: "Get straight talk on the values that make our country great...free."

You can't make this stuff up.

There is nothing about Newt Gingrich that is charming. The only thing he has going for him is that he's an old white guy and the veneer of that wears thin pretty quickly.

I cannot begin to understand why white people are so gullible when it comes to the likes of these people.

These quotes from his ex wife/wives are not in Wikipedia yet. Would be a nice thing to be able to read there.

This asshole really really thinks that the rules he says people should live by are only for the little people. Not for BIG people like him. He said it.

"It doesn't matter what I do. It doesn't matter what I live."

Does he rally think that even the Tea Baggers are going to put up with that???? What about the people who follow Sarah Palin. How could they square that? Tucker Carlson might think it is just AOK but that is because Tucker Carlson is an asshole just like Newt. Tea Baggers think Tucker Carlson is an asshole too. Go ahead Newt, spend a bunch of time and money running for something you will never catch.

... as long as the correct skin color and twang are involved.

Just a stinking, pretentious, hypocritical liar. The hell ... with ... him.

I just call it creepy. Why any woman would want that guys hands on her. Shallow as rain in a desert just like all the Republicans. Demanding that the middle class just keep giving up on dreams. Demanding that the poor live in poverty while their constituents keep getting richer. Lying to the public, putting on the media because the public wants to hear it. Boehner's no different. Pawlenty, Palin, Bachmann are no different. None of those guys are. They are destroying this country for their own gain.

(and this is only as I see it. I might be wrong--and hope I am)

...BUT, he only has to convince right-wingers--who already adore him--that he VICE(no pun intended)-presidential material. In other words, he gives someone like Mittens cover for being a Mormon because, you know, Newt's a Christian, hates liberals, is against abortion, hates Obama, is against big government...and all that other tripe that he purports to believe.

To righties of all stripes, even intelligent ones who clearly see him for what he is--a hypocrite who will increase their wealth--he's appealing in the same way Dick Cheney was, warts and all.

What WE have to do is make certain that people in the "squishy middle" don't fall for his crap, especially economically. To them, I don't think his shenanigans at the alter matter much. They're only worried about themselves and their wallets. We've got to fight him on the issues, particularly economic, and show why he's wrong.

hushpuppy's picture

Newt Gingrich, looks to me, is emerging as, certainly the intellectual center of the Republican Party...

Let's count all these Mensa members of the Republican Honor Roll Society. There's Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Michelle Malkin, Sharron Angle, George W. Bush, Rand Paul, Michelle Bachmann, James Inhofe, Bobby Jindal...and, of course, the club president, Sarah Palin.

RobertD's picture

He's eloquent--I mean, he's a liar, but he lies well and doesn't often trip over himself in doing it...just like Dick Cheney. He's composed like a psychopath.

That said, I think a debate with Joe Biden could easily be a toss-up.

Imagine I were new to C&L and came to read a different perspective on politics today. I get to the 2nd sentence of this post and read:

He is a black belt wordsmith of the tenth degree and has received the coveted "H2O" lapel pin from the Aqua Buddha himself.

As a new reader, I think to myself, "these people are nuts" and probably click away. I dont' know, just a thought, but maybe this kind of "inside joke" is better left for the comments section. I think quite a few posters fall prey to this sort of sophistry. it really is a small point I admit but I think post should endeavor to speak to potential newbies whenever possible and help spread the word of the left's point of view without looking silly. And yes, the Aqua Buddha is entertaining and so is the weird wing-nuttery of Rand Paul.

Compassionate Conservatism is a political philosophy that stresses using traditionally conservative techniques and concepts in order to improve the general welfare of society.

That’s not the case. However, it seems as though Karl was trying to suppress and continues to suppress the notion that and the fact that the man who raised him, a man who he has said he had a loving, open, honest relationship with, was, in fact, a gay man.

Karl buried his father Louie Rove in July of 2004. There was no public notice in the newspaper. And then he got on the campaign plane, and he went to eleven key swing states to help facilitate the anti-gay marriage amendment around this country, which drove turnout in the last election.

You are so right. Newt may be a serial marrier, but also believes in the Patriarchy. It is part of Mormonism and Fundamentalism in Christianity and Catholosism. He believes he makes the rules for the family, they obey, aren't entitled to disagree and they must accept his behavior. His moral code only applies to others. Patriarchs almost always believe they are exempt from the rules. That is one reason they hate big government. They don't like anyone elses rules applying to them.

formercon's picture

He always strikes me as condescending.......and his oversized head.

Newt is always given the elite (presidential) one on one interview. He is never really debated.
I want to see Newt placed in the debate dungeon with limited time for Q and A.
To have someone from an opposing view go one on one with Newt.

If Newt were as smart as he likes to think he is, Why did he step down from the House Speaker's chair?

This is the same Newt that gave a speech on squelching free speech when it came to Iraq War's critics. Suspend the first Amendment , Newt proposed. The lover of the constitution, right?

Newt the thrice married hypocrite railed at Bill Clinton but all the while he was having an affair himself. How is it that his congressional buddies never said one word? And not a peep from the press. They all just watched him be a TTonaSP. And Tim Hutchinson was having an affair at the same time also. And he was a Southern Baptist minister. They are all so disgusting.

These are the people who you'll be handing the reins of government to, if and when disaffected people vote for the party of NO. Ponder that thought, and then remember the 1990's. I'm not all that thrilled with the first half of President Obama's first term. It may be his only term. I won't work for him again in '12. What I will work for is letting as many people as I can reach know by example the kind of duplicitous, two-faced, morally bankrupt people the Party of NO has in it. I cannot imagine for one minute anyone of intelligence or integrity voting for any political organization with Lil' snooty "speaker" Newty as a member, with the possible exception of the Liar's Club.
If they make all the gains they imagine, the Party of NO will be faced with a genuine challenge, just as they were when this piece of work was House Speaker. Back then, they couldn't handle governing, and they proved it again and again. Maybe that, and only that, will rescue Democrats in 2012. I hope so, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. It'll probably be in foreclosure before then anyhow, not that anyone in the White House (at the moment anyhow) cares.

Others have called it, but here's the official DSM definition. I'd say it fits him pretty well.

301.81 NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER

Not every bad decision or stupid behavior deserves its own mental illness. Please try not to use mental illness as an insult like this. I don't remember if it's always John Amato or some other person who does it here, but I've seen mental illness used as an insult repeatedly on Crooks and Liars. It's not cute.
